In the report 'How Urban India Pays', Kearney-Amazon Pay said strong adoption of digital payments in <keyword id="21056201" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-purchases" source="keywords">online purchases</keyword> has potentially led to a permanent shift in consumer behaviours, fuelling offline adoption as well. While 90 per cent of the respondents of the survey preferred digital payments when making online purchases, affluent consumers lead the way with the highest Degree of Digital Payment Usage (DDPU), tending to use various modes of digital payment for 80 per cent of their transactions. "<keyword id="19955338" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="millennials" source="keywords">Millennials</keyword> and Gen X are leading in the adoption of all types of digital payment instruments," it said. "Men and women both use digital payments in about 72 per cent of their transactions, indicating gender parity." The research was based on an online survey of over 6,000 consumers along with more than 1,000 merchants through offline and online methods across 120 cities with representation from various regions, income groups, city categories, age brackets and genders. India has seen a surge in <keyword id="19990771" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce" source="keywords">e-commerce</keyword>, with the market valued at USD 75 billion to USD 80 billion in 2022 and expected to grow at a 21 per cent CAGR until 2030. "In line with India's digital journey, retail digital payments have grown dramatically over the past five years - from USD 300 billion in FY18 to USD 3.6 trillion in FY24. By FY30, they are likely to double to USD 7 trillion," the report said. The Unified Payments Interface (<keyword id="19900911" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="UPI" source="keywords">UPI</keyword>) has been a key driver of this growth, demonstrating a CAGR of 138 per cent in its volumes during FY18-24. Other instruments such as cards and digital wallets are also gaining in popularity, contributing 10 per cent of digital transaction value today. "With such dynamic developments, it is no wonder that India is a global frontrunner in the digital payment landscape, accounting for a stellar 46 per cent of the global digital transaction volumes in 2022," it said. Digital payments have penetrated small towns, with respondents in these areas highlighting that 65 per cent of their transactions are digital, while respondents in larger cities cited this ratio to be 75 per cent. "There is a strong correlation between a city's average DDPU and its retail potential, as measured by the Kearney India Retail Index, with the top six metros displaying both high DDPU and high retail potential," the report said. DDPU surpasses retail potential in some cities such as Lucknow, Patna, Bhopal, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Indore, Ahmedabad and Pune, which have a high DDPU nearly matching that of larger metropolitan cities despite having a lower retail potential than the top six metros. The report said co-branded credit cards are gaining momentum. "Emerging methods such as buy now, pay later (BNPL), wearable payments and voice assistant-based payments are also starting to make inroads." Digital modes of payment constitute around 69 per cent of the total transaction volumes for the Indian merchants that were surveyed. Even street vendors such as paan shops, fruit and flower sellers, food stalls, and kirana stores are joining the digital payment brigade. "Challenges for merchant adoption mirror consumer concerns, emphasizing issues of financial fraud, limited connectivity and trust," it said. The report said the next wave of growth in digital payments will be fueled by increasing penetration in segments with lower DDPU, such as consumers in lower-income groups and smaller towns, along with enhancing the value of spending via digital modes of payment in the higher DDPU segments by addressing their concerns. "All key stakeholders across the digital payments' ecosystem, including payment providers, the government, and value-added services players, will need to play a part in expanding digital payment adoption," it said. The focus areas should be empowering communities with financial education by launching target programmes to boost awareness of digital payments and new methods such as UPI Lite and UPI Lite X, especially for aspiring consumer segments, women in small towns, and street commerce merchants, to encourage higher adoption. Also, there is a need to create user-friendly consumer journeys by streamlining documentation and know-your-customer (<keyword id="19910870" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="kyc" source="keywords">KYC</keyword>) processes, optimising user interfaces, and establishing responsive customer complaint resolution mechanisms, it said adding also there is a need to enhance digital infrastructure by addressing systems and network issues and exploring innovations such as UPI Lite X for areas with limited internet. Also, the risk of fraud has to be minimised and access to credit-based payment methods expanded by using alternate data for underwriting risk, developing innovative credit products and promoting credit education for financial health. "These areas can help India overcome challenges in the digital payment ecosystem by fostering a more inclusive, secure, and user-friendly environment, thereby enhancing the adoption of digital payments among consumers and merchants in India," it added.

So what’s new? The fact that women in India are ready to play a new game in business: The game of big, scalable startups funded by private investors. 
 
Let me be clear at the outset. I do not differentiate between the different kind of women entrepreneurs. I believe any woman in business faces the same challenges and is driven by the same entrepreneurial spirit. The difference lies in the sport they choose among the vast selection in business – and that decides the rules of the game. Here’s my Hi-5 to women preparing to grow and build in this new arena. 
 
Pick the sport &amp; master the rules 
While local lifestyle businesses can be played as an individual sport – the neighbourhood boutique, the local beauty parlour, the customized jewelry designer – the startup business built on funding from venture capitalists is totally different. This is a competitive team sport. Played on a large playing field. And women in India are ready to break through the old boys’ network to make their mark here. They just need to be clear about the sport they are picking and be the best in it. Understand that this is a game of scale. This is a game where the VC enters only to exit – at a profit. These cannot be played like a lifestyle or family-based business. 
 
According to The emergence of the Millipreneurs a recent <a href="http://www.bnpparibas.com/en/news/bnp-paribas-global-entrepreneurs-report-2016">report</a> by BNP Paribas, worldwide women entrepreneurs are a little more successful today as they are more ambitious than their male counterparts. In India’s bounding startup ecosystem, women entrepreneurs could learn from this and pursue larger than life goals without fear. And to do so successfully, women must reinvent themselves and break out of the typecast accorded to them. 
 
Get off the emotional roller-coaster 
Simply put, a VC-funded business is a game played from the head, not heart. Yes, of course passion is important. But if I was to put a weightage to it, I would say building a successful business in 30% Passion and 70% hardcore numbers. 
 
I have accompanied several women startup founders to their meetings with investors and VCs. Having witnessed the discussion as a silent observer, I truly believe we undersell ourselves, and do not do justice to our potential. My tip to them: Get over the shyness! Don’t trip over your emotional story. Be a consummate professional. It takes just a few simple steps, to achieve a metamorphosis from a timid chrysalis to a self-assured butterfly who can hold her own in the colossal arena of big business. 
 
Project your confidence 
Even the most hardened male entrepreneur admits to nervousness while pitching to investors. It’s only normal. The trick is to project an image of confidence. And this can be done by doing your homework. Just as you practice pitches to win new business, you need to perfect the pitch to investors and VCs. 
 
In a KPMG <a href="http://www.kpmg-institutes.com/institutes/global-enterprise-institute/articles/2015/10/women-entrepreneurs-passion-purpose-and-perseverance.html">report</a> Women Entrepreneurs: Passion, Purpose, Perseverence, a whopping 83 percent of women entrepreneurs ranked self-confidence as a must have trait for successful leadership. Confidence goes hand in hand with risk taking, enabling the bold decisions, deemed necessary in today’s disruptive environment. 
 
Speak the language 
Big business has a certain innate and unchanging dialect. You need to master this language. 
 
No matter what your weakness, be it finance or technology or anything else, get over with it. Get comfortable with “valuation” and “share of wallet”. Lead and participate in a smooth dialogue on cash flows, income projections, budgeting, cost efficiencies, risk analysis, financial modeling and even digital transformation. Take a colleague/advisor along if necessary to these meetings. 
 
A Deloitte <a href="http://www2.deloitte.com/global/en/pages/about-deloitte/articles/women-entrepreneurs-report.html">report</a> recently pointed out that despite being more responsible borrowers, women face higher barriers in accessing capital. This disparity is the result of a complex interaction of factors, including the way private equity works, the way financial institutions operate, and the behavior of women themselves. 
 
Yes, the financial system needs to change its bias, but women themselves need to blaze through this bias by mastering the game themselves. So, test yourself, over and over again, take feedback, make the necessary changes. And at that all important meeting, lead the discussion and break the typecast! 
 
Learn to network 
Last but definitely not the least, you need to remember that to be successful at scale, you need to go beyond your own resources. Networking can get you access to knowledge, opportunities, capital, mentorship, even other startups that you can partner with in the ecosystem. Ever wonder why all the IIT and IIM graduates seem to do so well? Is it just the magic of their curriculum or their brains? Not to undermine either, the third big factor is their ready access to a core group – a strong alumni network. 
 
In India, women have traditionally been the window to the extended family or the neighbourhood community. Yet, in business, I have often met women entrepreneurs who confess that they find it difficult to network and think it is a waste of time. My advice to them is, weave that web of influence. Networking does not necessarily imply extending work-hours and neglecting your family. Be smart about it. Leverage your lunch-hour. Take small steps. But do not limit yourself by trying to go it alone. The power of a network can add exponentially to your strength. It is a necessary component of scaling up. 
 
There is heartening support for women entrepreneurs coming in from various directions today. The TiE Special Interest Group for Women Entrepreneurs, TiE Stree Shakti, <a href="http://www.nasscom.in/readying-women-entrepreneurship?fg=880017">Girls in Tech</a> programme by Nasscom, the funding of women ventures promised under <a href="http://pib.nic.in/newsite/PrintRelease.aspx?relid=134220">Standup India</a>, the special focus on women entrepreneurs at an event like <a href="http://www.lhrunwaytosuccess.in/startupexpo/">The Startup Expo</a>. And the launch of a <a href="http://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/now-a-venture-fund-for-women-entrepreneurs-115091400024_1.html">VC fund</a> focused exclusively on women entrepreneurs. While this is all adding to the momentum, there are miles to go. 
 
The battle of the woman entrepreneur in the Indian startup ecosystem is still herculean as she breaks long held perceptions, cultural biases and typecasts. But it is important that she continues to push past these to chase her dreams. I believe the success factor lies in an important shift in mindset of women themselves: We need to own our destiny. At the end of the day, only we are going to write our future.

Garmin launches new smartwatch in India at ₹20,990

Men are from Mars, women are from Venus. Are their shopping trends that diverse? A recent survey by Cashkaro.com breaks the stereotypes of <keyword id="6357762" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Online-shopping">online shopping</keyword> trends. 
 
 

	Who knew that shopping apps affect men and women differently? Fifty per cent of the total respondents don’t endorse the app-only move by some e-retailers. Not only that, Adam is more affected by app-only stores whereas it doesn’t really matter to Eve. 
	 “I think the reason is lot of people like to sit down and shop on their desktop. It makes browsing easier. 	Though we all know that mobile, electronics and fashion are the most popular categories for shopping for both the genders, women are more driven by cashbacks and coupons than men.

	Did you know that mode of payment vary from men to women too? Though Mobile Wallets like Paytm are gaining popularity with close to 20 per cent of respondents using it as their mode of payment, Adam actually prefers transactions with cards while Eve would go for cash-on-delivery first. 
	 
	 

	

	Adam and Eve also differ in their choices of categories that people are not comfortable buying online like real estate, medicines and high-end jewellery. Female are less wary to buy real estate online than men.

New Delhi, Mar 20 () Even seven years after the horrific gang rape and murder of Nirbhaya on an empty moving bus, safety remains a major concern for women who are increasingly seeking technology-based solutions to make their commute safer through dark and deserted areas.More and more women commuters are using apps and wearable gadgets, those that allow tracking by family members, to make themselves less and less vulnerable on poorly lit streets.Though the idea of being tracked may make anyone uncomfortable, the sheer benefits of these tech-based tools appear to outweigh any such concerns.Vikram Kumar, founder and CEO of Gurgaon-based Letstrack - a GPS solutions provider, said the company has seen a 50-per cent surge in sale of devices from January 2019 till date i.e. March 2020 and it has sold over two lakh devices to date since 2016. The company's customer base has surged to 5 lakh, Kumar asserted."Safety of women is a concern for sure. Every day, we hear about thousands of horrific acts being carried out across the country. This has made travelling, working and essentially every aspect of life very difficult. This is also affecting the livelihood of countless women, especially those who work night shifts," he said.Also the availability of several apps-based cab services such as Ola and Uber offer comparatively safer travel options to women, including during late night. Apart from being lighter on wallet, they allow women to board a ride closer to the starting point of their journey and get a doorstep drop.The feature that often prompts women to opt for these platforms over say, a bus, is the live tracking feature. Excerpts: Q. How challenging were the last three months for you? At IKEA, the health and safety of our customers, co-workers, suppliers and communities have been our biggest priority. Keeping this in mind, we closed our physical retail operations even before the government guidelines came out. As a business, we have had to redirect our focus to take care of our people, whether they are our coworkers, business partners or communities around us as we face this unprecedented global crisis together. It was clear that we need to understand what the future of retailing would look like, and begin to rethink the future and what innovations would be relevant in the post COVID era. We also realized, it was important to stay agile and adapt as things continue to evolve rapidly. During the lockdown, the ecommerce channel has been a big boon to consumers and businesses. With people spending a lot of time at home, home furnishing has become even more important and hence, we had to strengthen our online presence to reach many more people with home furnishing essentials they need during these times. ‘Click &amp; Collect’, a safe and contactless shopping service was launched in India in May to support our ecommerce business even better. We also launched an online personal shopper service to aid customers in their shopping journey online. In addition, remote planning and home furnishing consultancy supported our customers to plan and furnish their homes remotely. Caring for communities has been a big focus for us. To be people and planet positive is integrated in our business foundation. Globally we launched a relief fund of €26 million to support COVID-19 affected communities. How have you observed the consumer behavior changing during these last few months? The ‘home’ is always emotional. With our consumers spending all their time at home, it has acquired a whole new meaning; it is the new office, the new playground and school for children, the new restaurant and the new window to the world. While spending habits may not be the same as before, the need for home furnishing and furniture is amplified. This has given us a chance to explore innovative ways to offer products and solutions and address the consumer needs linked to home. Recent researches talk about 25-30% of consumers shopping online for the first time across categories, be it food, groceries, services, etc. A more forced-adoption of ecommerce is also leading to consumers discovering the convenience associated and the option is turning out to the preferred mode of shopping. Consumers are also more focused on their health and well-being and people are more conscious of leading an environment friendly and sustainable life at home. This will mean that brands paying attention to this trend will gain significantly. There are many needs at home today, but the economic uncertainty is not far behind. While a lot of the furniture and home furnishing solutions are moving from a want to a need, this is also the time when consumers are thinking twice about every spend. This is where affordable solutions become even more important. Being able to do more with less acquires a new meaning. Businesses that address this dimension of consumer sentiment are poised for growth. Q. What are some things that you think will never be the same, once we resume normalcy? There are many factors that will evolve in a post COVID-19 world, and one of the foremost developments is people avoiding crowded places for a while to come. We will also see an emergence of smart buying where customers will plan their shopping in advance and only purchase things that they need. With a likely decline in consumer spending in discretionary categories, value for money and affordable solutions will be a preferred option for consumers. Q. As markets open up, how are you ensuring that your consumers start trusting you? Safety of our coworkers and customers are our highest priority during these extraordinary times. Customers can order IKEA products on our website, pay online and select the ‘Click &amp; Collect service’ option when checking out. IKEA's delivery team would prepare their order for them to pick up from the Click &amp; Collect collection station in the store’s car parking area. This has added to our ecommerce capability and provided more options to customers shopping online. We reopened the Hyderabad store earlier this month with strict safety protocols in place. We limit the number of customers allowed into the store at a given time and ensure strict social distancing norms. Contactless hand sanitizer machines, indicators on the floor for social distancing, physical barriers for extra safe shopping, queue management for line-ups, separation screens around sales points, cash registers and customer service points are in place to secure a safe shopping experience. All shopping bags and trolleys are sanitized after use. And customers are subjected to temperature checks and mandatory face masks to further heighten safety. Q. How do you see the retail sector shaping up? What would its future look like? Do you think e-comm will take precedence? E-Commerce will emerge as a preferred channel for shopping for a vast majority of consumers across a wide range of categories. Physical retailing will see a reduction in shopping trips, but the trips that happen will be well planned and focused. This would also mean window shopping and impulse purchases are likely to reduce. When it comes to discretionary spends, consumers are likely to cut back on spending. A lot will depend on value for money and affordable products and solutions that retailers are able to bring together to address consumer needs. For example, a family might decide to postpone the purchase of a new sofa but might be open to updating the curtains and cushions to refresh the living room. Retailers will need to identify these pockets of opportunity and address consumers’ needs in the best possible manner across dimensions of value for money, good quality and design. Retail sale campaigns of the future could look different. Consumers might not be swayed by discounts offered as window shopping and impulse purchases are likely to decline due to the economic implications of the COVID crisis. Addressing a consumer need with value for money products and solutions might become more important than a deep discount. Q. Has the current situation made you innovate and think out of the box, in terms of how you communicate with your consumers? What does your marketing strategy look like? In tune with our vision ‘To create a better everyday life for many people’, as a brand, we always side with the many people, the common man as we know them in India. We always want to reflect empathy and togetherness with our customers, co-workers and communities. We also believe that ‘everyday life’ matters much more than the one-off excitement that could be few and far between. With that, our aim is and continues to be- to create a better life by offering a wide range of functional, well designed, affordable home furnishing solutions that can meet the needs of a diverse section of people with varying needs, wishes and dreams linked to their home. The COVID crisis is unprecedented and has required us to rethink the future and reinvent ourselves across many dimensions. When it comes to our marketing communication, we continue to side with the many people on relevant themes. During the lockdown period, we launched two campaigns that focused on people and their lives during COVID-19. Through our messages, we will always connect with people as people more than as consumers. Q. What is your media plan going to be now? Which medium will get the lion's share? As a brand, we side with the many people and hence we need to reach a very diverse audience; we will continue to focus on all the key media options ranging from out of home, TV, OTT channels, digital to print media. The media landscape has evolved significantly in the last decade with digital options taking a lead and we will look to have a good balance of digital and conventional media options. In the post COVID world, we do see people consuming entertainment at home and that is a new and interesting space to explore. Q. What are some of the key learnings from this experience? The COVID pandemic has caused a major health crisis across the world and the intensity and duration of the economic crisis that will follow is still unclear. It is important to stay agile and be quick to adapt to changing conditions that the crisis can present. Businesses in general need to use this opportunity to think of new ideas that can enable profitable growth in the future. As a home furnishing retailer, we see that the home has become even more important, but that does not mean people have the money to spend on refurnishing their homes, even though they might have an acute need to do so; this makes it even more important to find solutions that are not only easy to implement but also easy on the wallet. In addition, retailers also need to focus even more on their co-workers as they are in the lead in delivering a great customer experience, both online and in the store. Building a mindset of resilience amongst coworkers and empowering them to innovate and adapt to new ways of working is a great enabler to growth. It is only by remaining open to change, collaborating, understanding and adapting to consumer sentiments and trends, can we help create a new narrative for the future. A new narrative that will help us meet consumer need and enable the much-needed growth for our businesses.
