British telecom major <keyword id="15492" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vodafone" source="Orion">Vodafone</keyword> has raised its stake in debt-ridden <keyword id="6584552" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vodafone-idea-limited" source="Orion">Vodafone Idea Limited</keyword> to 47.61 per cent through its subsidiary Prime Metals, a regulatory filing said on Monday. The company earlier held 44.39 per cent stake in <keyword id="1553175" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vodafone-idea" source="Orion">Vodafone Idea</keyword> Limited (VIL). "Prime Metals held 2,18,55,26,081 equity shares, representing 7.61 per cent of the equity share capital, of Vodafone Idea Limited (the "company"). <keyword id="42733" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="pml" source="Orion">PML</keyword> has acquired 570,958,646 equity shares of the company through allotment of equity shares pursuant to a preferential issue of the company," the filing said. On Thursday, Vodafone Idea had said that its board has approved the allotment of 338.3 crore equity shares at Rs 13.30 per scrip to three promoter group entities - <keyword id="777130" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="euro-pacific-securities" source="Orion">Euro Pacific Securities</keyword>, Prime Metals and <keyword id="13300460" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="oriana-investments" source="Orion">Oriana Investments</keyword> - for about Rs 4,500 crore. This includes allotment of 1,96,66,35,338 equity shares to Euro Pacific Securities (promoter), 57,09,58,646 equity shares to Prime Metals (promoter), and 84,58,64,661 equity shares to Oriana Investments (promoter group). The telecom operator in March had announced a Rs 14,500-crore fundraising plan, where promoters would inject Rs 4,500 crore. Reliance <keyword id="19906886" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jio" source="keywords">Jio</keyword>, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea increased their mobile service plan rates in the range of 10-27 % in the first week of July. Airtel and Vodafone Idea have more than doubled their entry-level mobile rates in the last 2-3 years to Rs 199 that comes with 28 days validity. State-run <keyword id="19970536" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSNL" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BSNL" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BSNL">BSNL</keyword> was the only player that added new subscribers and led the market in terms of new net customer addition, according to a monthly subscribers report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Friday. According to the report, BSNL added over 2.94 million mobile subscribers in July. Bharti Airtel lost 1.69 million mobile subscribers which was highest among its peers. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio lost 1.41 million and 758,000 mobile subscribers, respectively. Overall, the telecom subscriber base in the country declined marginally to 1,205.17 million in July from 1,205.64 million in June. North East, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Mumbai, Kolkata, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Bihar, West Bengal, UP East, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh telecom circles recorded decline in mobile customer base post the hike in mobile services rates. The wireline or the fixed line connections segment increased by about 1% to 35.56 million in July from 35.11 million in June. Reliance Jio led the fixed-line segment with addition of over 480,000 new subscribers. It was followed by Bharti Airtel which added over 136,000 new subscribers, VMIPL 12,413, Vi 11,375, Tata Teleservices 3,971 and Quadrant added 12 new fixed line customers. BSNL was the biggest loser in the segment. The state-run firm lost 134,000 fixed line customers and its sister concern lost 56,454 customers. The broadband customer base in the country increased to 946.19 million at the end of July from 940.75 million in June. Top five players accounted for 98.42% of total broadband connection in the country. Reliance Jio led the chart with 488.63 million <keyword id="23252277" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="broadband-customers" source="keywords">broadband customers</keyword>, Airtel with 284.03 million, Vodafone Idea with 126.72 million, BSNL with 29.61 million and Atria Convergence with 2.26 million. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has approved a 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) into the homegrown Idea Cellular, paving the way for its merger with Vodafone’s Indian subsidiary. The merger was first announced in March 2017. The combined entity - Vodafone Idea Limited - will become India’s largest telecom operator, by market share and subscribers, unseating <keyword id="15491" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> in the process for the first time in a decade. It will reportedly command a 37% share of the market and have over 430 million subscribers. Up until now, Idea had a FDI limit of 67.5%. The limit had to be raised to 100% in order for the merger to go through. This also includes the complete foreign ownership of Idea’s subsidiaries - Idea Cellular Infrastructure Services and Aditya Birla Telecom. Vodafone will own a 45% stake in the combined entity. Meanwhile Idea’s shareholders will take a 29% stake and Aditya Birla Group, Idea’s parent, will own 26%. The company will be run by Balesh Sharma, the current chief operating officer of Vodafone India. The Idea-Vodafone merger comes amid a wider trend towards consolidation in the telecom sector. Bharti Airtel is in the process of purchasing the Indian operations of Telenor. One last approval However, before all this can go through, DoT needs Vodafone and Idea to clear around ₹57 billion in one-time spectrum charges (OTSC). As per the mergers and acquisitions policy for the telecom sector, all spectrum dues need to be cleared ahead of a merger. The companies might be able to challenge this in court, but will still need to provide a bank guarantee to get the DoT’s approval. The merger is slated for completion within the next few months. The managing board of Idea has called for a meeting <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/idea-to-become-vodafone-idea-plans-to-raise-rs-15000-crore/articleshow/64417846.cms">later in June</a> to consider all the requirements for the merger, including the name change and a proposal to raise ₹150 billion worth of debt capital. Despite its large size, it won’t exactly be smooth sailing for the combined entity. Domestic rivals Airtel and Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> will put up a tough fight for control of India’s telecom sector, which is currently characterised by heavy price competition and loss leadership.

New funds and price hikes are the only way to save Vodafone-Idea As Vodafone Idea continues to lose subscribers, it's also running out of money. This limits the company’s ability to invest in networks and adds to subscribers’ woes who switch over to other telecom operators. “We believe this spiral can be broken only with significant ARPU increase and fund infusion,” said Edelweiss Research in its report dated October 30. According to Axis Capital, Vodafone Idea’s future depends on it. The new mega tower company In the endeavour to raise new funds, Vodafone Idea has sold off around 11.15% of its holding in Indus Towers to make way for a newly merged mega tower company. The Vodafone Group will still hold around 28.12% in the new firm. Meanwhile, <keyword id="6354287" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharti-airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword>’s stake reduces from 53.51% in Bharti Infratel to 36.7% in the combined entity. "Merger of Indus Towers Limited &amp; Bharti Infratel Limited has been completed today. The combined entity, to be renamed as Indus Towers Limited, is listed on the National Stock Exchange of India Limited &amp; BSE Limited," said Bharti Airtel in its filing with the Indian exchanges. Oaktree, Varde Partners and others offer $2 billion in funding The Oaktree-led consortium is formed of many companies, including Varde Partners. Sources told <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/oaktree-varde-said-to-offer-2-billion-funding-to-vodafone-idea">Bloomberg</a> that they have made an offer to infuse between $2 billion to $2.5 billion of capital into Vodafone Idea. But, this is only one of the many offers that the company is currently considering. Vodafone Idea is in talks with several other investors. The company has been reporting losses for nine consecutive quarters. And, since the merger of 2017, Vodafone Idea is yet to come up green in its annual reports. Vodafone Idea is the weakest of three telecom giants in India, the other two being Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. And its survival is the only thing that’s standing in the way of the Indian telecom market turning into a duopoly. Vodafone Idea soars nearly 5% on fund infusion from Indus Towers stake sale

The <keyword id="10099318" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ibm-big-data">IBM big data</keyword> platform helps businesses address the "full spectrum" of big data business challenges. BM Services implements data transformation with open technologies to propel Vodafone Idea's hybrid cloud strategy. Vodafone Idea has a need for large scale data transformation with a focus on architecture modernisation, open-source adoption and using predictive analytics for data modernisation. By partnering on this implementation, IBM is helping VIL transform the way data is optimised and delivered to partners, employees and internal systems. Fragmented, siloed data can now be streamlined for seamless data availability, the tech giant said. VIL will also be able to combine insights from the Big Data Platform and better leverage cloud native technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance revenues, reduce costs and elevate customer experiences, IBM said. Vodafone Idea inks pact with IBM to implement a big data platform

New Delhi, Dec 1 () In a first mobile tariff hike in past four years, telecom operator Vodafone Idea on Sunday announced new plans under which call and data charges will be dearer for its pre-paid customers by up to 42 per cent from December 3.
 Besides this, Vodafone Idea will also charge 6 paise per minute for every outgoing call made by customers on to the network of other operators.
 "Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), India's leading telecom service provider, today announced new tariffs/plans for its prepaid products and services. New plans will be available across India starting 00:00 hours of 3 December 2019," the company said in a statement.
 The company has announced new plans in "unlimited"category with 2 days, 28 days, 84 days, 365 days validity which on the back of the envelope calculations show are costlier by up to 41.2 per cent.
 Vodafone Idea has only revised rates of plan promising unlimited mobile and data services and also introduced some new plans.
 A company official explained all the existing plans in unlimited category will be replaced by the new plans from December 3 and new plans will be introduced or revised based on market response.
 Though the company classifies a set of plans in 'unlimited' category, these actually come with usage limit for data at a promised speed and 100 SMS per day limit.
 The highest rate of increase of 41.2 per cent has been announced by the company in annual unlimited category plan which will cost Rs 2,399 instead of 1,699 at present.
 The starting plan with data offering of 1.5 Gb per day with 84 days validity in "unlimited" category will cost around 31 per cent more at Rs 599 compared to Rs 458 at present.
 The company will raise the price of Rs 199 unlimited plan, which offers 1.5 Gb data per day, by about 25 per cent to Rs 249.
 Vodafone Idea which is reeling under massive debt of around Rs 1.17 lakh crore had earlier cited acute financial stress on the company behind the decision to raise mobile call and data charges.
 Vodafone Idea last month reported a consolidated loss of Rs 50,921 crore -- the highest ever loss posted by any Indian corporate -- for the September quarter on account of liability arising out of the Supreme Court's order in the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) case.
 The company has estimated liability of Rs 44,150 crore post the apex court order, and made provisioning of Rs 25,680 crore in the second quarter this fiscal. PRS RR MR

The contract duration will be three years, according to Nitin Bansal, Ericsson's India managing director. The Stockholm-based company is hoping to capitalize on the $27 billion market potential from its 5G network roll outs in India. As a part of the deal, Ericsson will supply radio access and transport equipment from its 5G portfolio for Vodafone Idea in eight telecom circles in India. "Consolidation of the existing deployment base (2G/3G) will be carried out to maximise the spectrum on LTE," Ericsson said. In fact, Vodafone Idea is not the only Indian network that Ericsson that tie-ups for 5G integration. In one form or another, Ericsson has contracts will all major Indian telcos including Airtel and Jio. In October last year, Reliance Jio Infocomm and Ericsson unveiled jointly developed 5G use cases which were showcased over a live 5G network in Navi Mumbai and in Delhi. Ericsson's pact with Vodafone Idea is the next step towards a $27 billion goal

New Delhi, Dec 8 () Telecom operator Reliance Jio has claimed that it is offering five times more free outgoing calls limit on other networks than an average customer requires and they are unlikely to pay for the calls.
 The Mukesh Ambani-led telecom operator added that its new plan are offering up to 25 per cent more value than that of rivals.
 Reaction from Reliance Jio came after Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea removed cap on outgoing calls limit outside their network with effect from December 6, the day Reliance Jio rolled out mobile call and data plans priced up to 40 per cent compared to previous offerings.
 "Entitlement for off-net calls in Jio's 'All in One Plans' is more than 5 times of what an average customer uses as per industry data and consequently, an average Jio customer is unlikely to have to ever pay for off net calls. We reiterate that Jio plans offer up to 25 per cent higher value than comparable plans of other operators," Reliance Jio said in a statement.
 The company is offering 1,000 minutes per month (28-day cycle) of free calling every month across all plans.
 Both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea earlier capped outgoing calls to other networks at 1,000 minutes in plan with 28-days validity, 3,000 minutes in 84-day validity and 12,000 in 365 days validity plan. Beyond this limit, customers were required to pay 6 paise per minute for outgoing calls made to other networks.
 "We heard you! And we are making the change. From tomorrow, enjoy unlimited calling to any network in India with all our unlimited plans. No conditions apply," Bharti Airtel said in a tweet on Friday.
 Vodafone Idea also made similar announcement on Twitter.
 "Here are unlimited possibilities with free unlimited calling, even to other networks," Vodafone Idea tweeted with note that the changes are effective from December 6 onward.
 Both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea have raised their mobile calls and internet plan prices by up to 50 per cent from December 3.
 Bharti Airtel increased its entry-level unlimited plan with a year-long validity by about 50 per cent to Rs 1,499 with 24 GB of data in place of Rs 998 plan with 12 GB data usage limit.
 The price of the 365-day valid plan with daily data usage limit of 1.5 GB per day now costs 41.2 per cent more at Rs 2,398 compared to Rs 1,699 plan. Vodafone Idea plans were priced about Re 1 higher compared to that of Airtel.
 Vodafone also announced three new plans -- Rs 219 with 28 days validity offering 1 GB per day, Rs 399 and Rs 449 plan with 56 days validity each, offering 1.5 Gb and 2 GB data usage, respectively.
 With removal of the limit, Airtel's new Rs 399 plans with 56 days validity became cheaper than that of Reliance Jio plan at the same price. Vodafone Idea has also added Rs 219 plan with same offering as announced by Bharti Airtel.
 The move to raise mobile services tariff follows the Supreme Court's judgment on adjusted gross revenue in October.
 Bharti Airtel has posted a staggering Rs 23,045 crore net loss for the second quarter ended September 30, due to provisioning of Rs 28,450 crore in the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling on statutory dues.
 According to government data, the liabilities in the case of Bharti Airtel add up to nearly Rs 35,586 crore, of which Rs 21,682 crore is licence fee and another Rs 13,904.01 crore is the spectrum usage charge dues (excluding the dues of Telenor and Tata Teleservices).
 The government is currently not considering any proposal on waiver of penalties and interest on outstanding licence fee based on adjusted gross revenue, or on extending the timelines for telecom companies to pay up their statutory dues. PRS HRS

Average customer unlikely to pay for outgoing calls, says Jio

New Delhi, Jan 27 () Reliance Jio became the country's largest telecom player in terms of subscribers at the cost of loss in Vodafone Idea's customer base, India Ratings and Research said in report on Monday.
Reliance Jio has become the largest telecom player with 36.9 crore mobile subscribers in November 2019, according to the data published by telecom regulator Trai this month.
Vodafone Idea reported a total mobile subscriber base of 33.62 crore and Bharti Airtel at 32.73 crore customers for November 2019.
"The increase in RJio's subscriber base is largely at the cost of reduction in the subscriber base of Vodafone Idea Limited, whose subscriber market share has declined consistently in last two years," Ind-Ra report said.
The rating agencies said the revenue market share of RJio also grew to 34.9 per cent in the second quarter of current fiscal, which is highest in the industry compared to other players.
"The average revenue per user (ARPU) reported by telecom companies (telcos) has started showing signs of recovery in the last two to three quarters. Moreover, the recent tariff hikes by telcos in the range of 25 to 35 per cent is likely to support the increase in ARPU over the next few quarters," Ind-Ra said.
The agency on Friday downgraded the rating of Rs 3,500 crore non-convertible debentures of Vodafone Idea on account of liabilities related to adjusted gross revenue dues.
The NCDs were issued by erstwhile Vodafone Mobile Services.
The credit rating firm downgraded the rating by one level to IND BBB from IND A+ and placed it in "rating watch negative" indicating chance of further lowering of its ability to pay for the debt note. PRS

New Delhi, June 9 () Telecom operator Vodafone Idea on Tuesday said it has installed protective shields at its telecom retail outlets in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) to keep customers and retailers safe amid the coronavirus pandemic. The shields prevent direct contact between the retail personnel and customers, while facilitating customer service and ensuring complete social distancing within the store premises, the company said in a statement. "With the resumption of commercial activities and opening of our stores, we are taking full care to ensure safe health of our retailers and customers in Delhi and NCR. We have installed protective shields at telecom outlets across Delhi-NCR to safely and efficiently deliver services to our customers through these outlets," Arvinder Singh Sachdeva, Operations Director at Vodafone Idea Limited said.
