These contracts, which span a period of three years, are a crucial part of the company's Rs 55,000 crore capital expenditure (capex) plan. The investment will focus on expanding 4G coverage, launching 5G services, and meeting the growing demand for data in India. The debt-laden telecom operator announced the deal as it strives to regain market share in an increasingly competitive industry. Vodafone Idea has faced financial difficulties since its merger in 2018 between Vodafone Group's Indian arm and Aditya Birla Group's Idea Cellular. The Rs 30,000 crore deal with Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung is expected to provide Vodafone Idea with the necessary equipment to expand its 4G coverage from 1.03 billion to 1.2 billion people, as well as initiate the rollout of 5G services in key markets. The company confirmed that supplies under the new contract would begin arriving in the next quarter. In a statement, Vodafone Idea said that its primary goal is to enhance 4G connectivity across India while simultaneously preparing to introduce 5G technology. Birla, chairman of Aditya Birla group, which is one of the shareholders of the troubled telco VIL, was speaking at the inaugural session of India Mobile Congress. "In the coming quarters, Vodafone Idea will initiate significant investments in order to roll out 5G networks and further expand 4G coverage across the country. Moreover, the company is determined to realise the government's vision of establishing a robust supply chain in critical and emerging areas, including Open RAN (Radio Access Network)," he said. Further, Birla said this endeavour will enable innovative Indian companies to design both hardware and software for the global markets. "India's digital ecosystem stands on the brink of unprecedented growth," Birla said.

Just ahead of its mega <keyword id="20008249" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="FPO" source="keywords">FPO</keyword> opening to <keyword id="21332860" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="public-investors" source="keywords">public investors</keyword>, <keyword id="19899016" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea" source="keywords">Vodafone Idea</keyword> (<keyword id="20062540" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vil" source="keywords">VIL</keyword>) has announced closure of its anchor book allocation, raising about Rs 5,400 crore from marquee global as well as domestic investors, according to a statutory filing by the <keyword id="20132985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telco" source="keywords">telco</keyword>. This could be the third-largest anchor book after One 97 Communications and Life Insurance Corporation (LIC). One 97 Communications and LIC had raised Rs 8,235 crore and Rs 5,627 crore in the anchor round, respectively. In a notification to the exchanges on Wednesday, VIL said it has allotted 490.9 crore shares to 74 funds at Rs 11 apiece, which is also the upper end of the price band. This translated into a transaction size to Rs 5,400 crore. Of the total allocation to <keyword id="21330641" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="anchor-investors" source="keywords">anchor investors</keyword>, 79.52 crore stocks, or 16.2 per cent of the total, were allocated to five domestic mutual fund through a total of 11 schemes. Those who were allotted shares include GQG Partners Emerging Markets Equity Fund, Fidelity, UBS Fund Management, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Australian Super, Troo Capital, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup Global Markets Mauritius, and Jupiter Fund Management. Additionally, domestic investors, including Motilal Oswal Mutual Fund, HDFC Mutual Fund, SBI General Insurance and Quant Mutual Fund, were allocated shares in the anchor round. The Rs 18,000-crore FPO of Vodafone Idea will open for public subscription on April 18 and conclude on April 22, marking the biggest FPO in the country. The price band has been set at Rs 10-11 per share. Prior to this, the largest FPO in the Indian market was a Rs 15,000 crore share-sale by YES Bank in 2020. The fundraise would give the ailing telco the firepower to improve its positioning in the Indian telecom market, where it currently trails larger rivals such as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, by a wide margin. The funds will also help VIL shore up finances for the much-delayed <keyword id="20366727" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="5G-rollout" source="keywords">5G rollout</keyword> and strengthening 4G services, and payment of vendor dues. On April 6, the VIL Board approved raising Rs 2,075 crore from promoter Aditya Birla Group and increasing its authorised share capital to Rs 1 lakh crore. Earlier this year, Vodafone Idea had outlined plans to raise Rs 45,000 crore through a mix of equity and debt as it looked to match services offered by rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel and arrest an alarming and prolonged subscriber churn. VIL has also been fighting a desperate battle for survival, saddled with debt of Rs 2.1 lakh crore and quarterly losses. According to Trai data, Vodafone Idea continued to bleed on the subscriber front. VIL lost 15.2 lakh wireless subscribers, plunging its mobile subscriber base to 22.15 crore in January, in sharp contrast to subscriber gains by Jio and Airtel.

Capex is another piece of puzzle that the telco needs to solve. Vodafone Idea is yet to roll out its 5G offerings even as Jio and Airtel 5G services have been available in several parts of the country since October 2022. “The much-awaited capital raise remains critical to provide immediate liquidity and invest in the rollout of 5G and extending 4G infrastructure. Vodafone Idea acquired 5G spectrum in the 3300Mhz and 26GHz bands in the recent auction (September 2022) but unlike Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, it has not deployed the spectrum and remains significantly behind in 4G network rollout too,” said the Motilal Oswal report. Clearly, the market caught a whiff of it. It’s not the first time that reports have claimed Vodafone Idea will infuse equity, but this time, it’s coming straight from the horse’s mouth – the report adds that these comments were made by the company’s senior management at an internal investors’ call this week. The increase in capex could help the telco catch up to its rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio in terms of technology and other aspects. Business Insider has reached out to Vodafone Idea for comments. For instance, Vodafone Idea did not launch Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) for several months after Airtel and Reliance Jio announced support across the country. Vodafone Idea currently spends an estimated $500 million (approx. ₹3,800 crore) in capex, while its rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio spend $3 billion (approx. ₹22,800 crore) each. At the end of September, 2021, Vodafone Idea had ₹250 crore in cash and cash equivalents, while its debt stood at ₹1.94 lakh crore. A four-fold boost is only possible if either the promoters, or private equity firms are ready to plough in equity into the third largest telecom company in India. After relief from Indian government, Vodafone Idea reportedly turns to banks for a loan recast

<ul><li>The Indian billionaire with a 27% stake in the telecom operator has reportedly written to the government. </li><li>In a letter to the government, <keyword id="39439" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="birla">Birla</keyword> said potential investors want to see ‘clear government intent’ to have a three-player telecom market. </li><li><keyword id="1553175" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone-Idea">Vodafone Idea</keyword>’s current market capitalisation stands at ₹24,000 crore, which means Birla’s 27% stake is worth ₹6,500 crore. </li></ul><keyword id="6354955" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kumar-Mangalam-Birla">Kumar Mangalam Birla</keyword>, one of the promoters of the beleaguered telco Vodafone Idea, has offered to give up his 27% stake in the company to help it stay afloat. Post the merger of Vodafone and Idea, Birla owns a 27% stake in the telco, while Vodafone Plc., owns a 44% stake. At the current market capitalisation of around ₹24,000 crore, Birla’s stake is worth ₹6,500 crore. The shares of Vodafone Idea had gained a little over a percent at 1:50 p.m on August 2 (Monday). The stock has lost over a quarter of its value since the start of the year. <div type="image" title="Vodafone Idea 01_07_21 to 02_08_21." msid="84969304" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Vodafone Idea share price over the last one month&amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> In a letter to the Union Cabinet Secretary, Rajiv Gauba, Birla reportedly <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/kumar-mangalam-birla-willing-to-give-up-stake-in-voda-idea-for-telcos-survival/articleshow/84968401.cms">said</a> he is willing to give up his stake in Vodafone Idea to any state-owned or a domestic financial entity, provided the entity wants to continue operations of Vodafone Idea as a going concern. “It is with a sense of duty towards 27 crore Indians connected by VIL, I am more than willing to hand over my stake in the company to any entity-public sector/government/domestic financial entity or any other that the government may consider worthy of keeping the company as a going concern,” Birla said in his letter. Going concern refers to a business that has the assets to meet financial obligations when they fall due. Vodafone Idea is currently saddled with a debt of ₹1.8 lakh crore, a third of which is due to deferred spectrum license fee, and levy on recalculated revenue from the past to include income from non-telecom operations. Earlier last month, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/telecom/news/vodafone-idea-and-airtel-shares-fall-as-sc-rejects-agr-dues-re-computation-appeal/articleshow/84668288.cms">Supreme Court refused</a> to give the telco a discount on its retrospective dues, which amount to over ₹50,000 crore. This, combined with deferred spectrum dues of ₹8,292 crore means the company needs funds right now – even though <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/stock-market/markets/news/cost-cutting-is-not-helping-vodafone-idea-fresh-funds-might-but-nothing-is-coming/articleshow/84092610.cms">nothing seems to be coming</a>. Back in September 2020, Vodafone Idea’s board had <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/voda-ideas-rs-25000-cr-fund-raise-set-to-be-done-in-2-3-months/articleshow/78964068.cms?from=mdr">announced</a> plans to raise up to ₹25,000 crore through debt and equity. Nearly a year later, the plans are yet to yield any results. The lack of government support seems to be keeping investors at bay, which is something that Birla touched upon in his letter. “To actively participate in the fund raising, the potential foreign investors want to see clear government intent to have a three-player telecom market (consistent with its public stance) through positive actions on long-standing requests such as clarity on AGR liability, adequate moratorium on spectrum payments and most importantly, a floor pricing regime above the cost of service,” he said. “In the absence of definitive steps in this regard, the potential investors have understandable hesitation to invest,” he added further. The government is also considering, according to reports, a slew of long-term measures to help the telecom sector. It may be willing to rewrite the rules to exclude ‘non-telecom’ revenue from the licence agreements, and allow telcos to surrender unused spectrum for a small penalty. However, it will not affect Vodafone Idea’s present dues and the current financial health. The last word on the issue is yet to be spoken. For comparison, Airtel’s ARPU in the same period was ₹145, while Jio stood at ₹138. The problem with lesser ARPU has become a vicious cycle in the case of Vodafone Idea. If it raises tariffs to improve its earnings, and others don’t, the company will lose more subscribers. If others follow VI in raising tariffs, they make more money, which can be later used to edge it out.
