Thiruvananthapuram, External Affairs Minister <keyword id="491850" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="s-jaishankar" source="Orion">S Jaishankar</keyword> on Sunday said the West was not the "bad guy" as it was not flooding Asian and African markets with goods on a massive scale and that there was a need to get over the "syndrome" of seeing it in a negative way. <keyword id="236448" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jaishankar" source="Orion">Jaishankar</keyword>, in an interview to Malayalam news channel Asianet, also made it clear that he was not batting for the West. He was in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the launch of the <keyword id="18816562" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM-Vishwakarma-scheme-" source="Orion">PM Vishwakarma scheme.</keyword> "It is not the West which is flooding Asia and Africa with goods on a massive scale. I think we need to get over the syndrome of the past that the West is the bad guy and on the other side are the developing countries. The world is more complicated, the problems are much more complicated than that," the minister said. Former Indian diplomat T P Sreenivasan interviewed the minister for the channel. On being asked whether Chinese President <keyword id="191809" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="xi-jinping" source="Orion">Xi Jinping</keyword> did not attend the G20 summit in New Delhi because it did not want India to be seen as leader of the Global South, Jaishankar said the reasons were up for speculation. He said the issue today was the building up of a strong sense, over the last 15-20 years, over the inequities of globalisation where countries saw their products, manufacturing and employment come under stress due to their markets being flooded by cheap goods -- an indirect reference to the Chinese trade and economic policies. The minister said this underlying resentment and pain of those countries regarding the global economy was building up for the last 15-20 years and the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict resulted in prices of energy and food items going up. So there was a sense of anger building up in countries about them being used as an extractive resource to fuel the economy of another nation and added that the West was not to be blamed for that. He made it clear that he was not batting for the West and said that in today's globalisation there was a concentration of manufacturing that was being leveraged and subsidised and was affecting economies of various nations. However, India's manufacturing, agriculture, scientific achievement like the Chandrayaan-3 mission, ability to vaccinate, etc all of that has created a sense among the Global South, which includes the African Union, "that one of us has the ability to stand, grow and progress". "So they identify with us in a way that they do not with other people," Jaishankar said. Responding to queries, he also spoke about the achievements of the G20 Summit under the Indian presidency and the threat posed by the political space given by Canada to the Khalistan group. Jaishankar said that some of the major achievements of the G20 Summit under the Indian presidency was that India was able to get the influential group of nations back on the track of growth and development and also focus on the Global South initiative. In addition to that, the country was also able to do diplomacy in a different way and through the summit created a greater interest in the nation about the Baltic, he said. Jaishankar said India was a different country now with a different level of confidence and a different leadership and the manner in which G20 was conducted has only benefited the nation. He said that the summit showed that the agenda "does not have to be decided by the West or by the P5 or by a narrow one or two countries" and that India too can shape it. "By doing the Voice of the Global South (summit) and bringing 125 nations together, we straightaway shaped the agenda," he said. At the same time, he said, the Global South was not a new world order or a definition and India was not claiming to be its leader. "My most truthful answer is that the Global South is not a definition, but a feeling. It is a feeling of solidarity, a willingness to put yourself out," he said, adding that "those who are part of it know it and those who are not also know it". World leaders at the two-day G20 Summit in New Delhi recently had hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "decisive leadership" and for championing the voice of the Global South. He also welcomed the proposed economic corridor with India at one end and Europe at the other and which passes through the Middle East making it easier for people from here to go there for job opportunities. While speaking about people migrating abroad for jobs, he touched upon the issue of the Khalistan group's activities in Canada and its effect on India's relations with that country. He said the problem arises when, for whatever reason, such countries give space in their politics for activities of such groups. The minister said there were compulsions in politics, "but everybody, especially in a democracy, must temper that with a larger sense of responsibility to the world as well as a sense of responsibility to their own image and their own well being". "Forget us for the moment. You know the kind of force involved in all of this. They are not good for the country where all of this will happen. Today it is Canada, it could be something else tomorrow. We are focusing on generating that appreciation," he said. On how India managed to not get Russia blamed for the Ukraine conflict in the G20 declaration, Jaishankar said, "Everybody compromised." "There was a lot of give and take," he added. He said what happened in the Bali Summit of G20, where Russia was blamed, could not be repeated in India and at the same time the clock could not be stopped there. "This is New Delhi. So the New Delhi outcome had to be forged," he said. He also said that in the G20 India was able to focus on the Global South in terms of phrases, agenda, outcome and the African Union's membership "for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi really stuck his neck out". "This is a different country, with a different level of confidence and a different leadership," he concluded.

The recruitment process will begin soon. As per the plan, 34,000 constables will be absorbed in civil police and 6,000 in other units, including PAC, radio and as computer operators. A senior police officer said that the recruitment process coincides with the Prime Minister's direction to officials of central departments and ministries to recruit 10 lakh people in the next 1.5 years. In the last five years, the state police have recruited 1.53 lakh personnel. "Now, we plan to recruit 40,000 more constables, following which the total would go further up to 1.93 lakhs, which is a record," said Vishwakarma. The DG said that the recruitment exam will be conducted in winter and results will be out by next summer, and subsequently, the induction will be done by December 2023. Nearly 1,003 candidates were recruited as SI and on equivalent ranks after the order of court pending since 2011, while 5,498 were recruited as constables and on equivalent ranks after court order on a recruitment in 2013. Uttar Pradesh to recruit 40,000 additional constables across various wings

<keyword id="1156313" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="The-Film-and-Television-Institute-of-India">The Film and Television Institute of India</keyword> (<keyword id="55490" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FTII">FTII</keyword>) controversy took an ugly turn today. Its students and alumni, who arrived in Delhi to meet officials of the Information and Broadcasting (I&amp;B) Ministry, were taken into custody for protesting outside it. After more than 20 days of agitation against the appointment of <keyword id="54" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="TV-actor">TV actor</keyword> <keyword id="258297" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gajendra-Chauhan">Gajendra Chauhan</keyword> as the new chairman of the institute, the students came here. The <keyword id="6359715" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="protest">protest</keyword> was supported by students of <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword>, <keyword id="58265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru-University">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). 

	The FTII students have been boycotting classes, abandoning academic work in protest against Chauhan, who according to them does not have “vision and knowledge” to lead the premiere institution of film-making. 
 

	Nakul Singh Sahani, an independent film-maker and FTII alumnus, said: “The students were holding a peaceful protest outside the ministry at Shastri Bhawan when they were dragged by police and arrested. We came here to arrive at a conclusion and want a fresh selection of a chairman and some governing council members of the institute. We also want a transparent system where we could know how these appointments were done.”
 <keyword id="2933028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cinematographer-Saurabh-Vishwakarma">Cinematographer Saurabh Vishwakarma</keyword>, who passed out from FTII in 2004, said: “It is a prestigious institution and the post of the chairman is not one that can be offered to anyone. If a person has achieved eminence in his field and his work has been recognized, then it adds to his credentials. Such person can be appointed as is its head.” 

	Sahani passed out from the Pune-based institute in 2006. He said: “Chauhan has zero credential to be the chairman. The TV actor was appointed as he is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and not because of his depth of knowledge.”
 

	Moreover, there are some members in the FTII governing council who have been selected due to their closeness to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he said, asking “do they have any idea about film-making, script writing or can they teach students or plan their syllabus and conduct workshops”.
 “Chauhan doesn’t have the required experience to run the top most institute of film-making, which enjoys certain credibility in India and abroad. How will he lead the institution,” asked Aditi Sharma, film-maker and owner of <keyword id="2933027" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Apple-Box-Films">Apple Box Films</keyword>. 

	She said: "There were eminent people in the field of cinema before Chauhan who occupied this prestigious post. The legacy has to be maintained and respected.”
 The post has been previously held by National award-winning film-maker <keyword id="29916" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shyam-Benegal">Shyam Benegal</keyword>, veteran actor Vinod Khanna, Kannada writer U R Ananthamurthy, film director <keyword id="222175" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Saeed-Akhtar-Mirza">Saeed Akhtar Mirza</keyword>, among others. 

	This type of political interference is not new to institutions of higher learning in India, Sharma said, adding IITs and IIMs are also its victims. 
 

	Thousands of students sit for the test and compete to get an entry in FTII, said Himanshu Prajapati, second year student of film direction. “People like Chauhan will destroy the credibility of the institute,” he said.

FTII row: students arrested in Delhi for protesting against Gajendra Chauhan’s appointment

<keyword id="1373364" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UPSEB">UPSEB</keyword> board has declared the result for class X and class XII for the year 2019. 58.06 lakh students had registered for the 10th and 12th class board exams this year with around 31.95 lakh students from High school and 26 lakh students from the Intermediate level registering themselves for the board exams. There were more than 3 crore answer sheets to be checked for the exam that was conducted across 8354 exam centers. The exams started on February 7 for both 10th and 12th class simultaneously. The UP board class X an XII exams got completed on 28th February and March 2 respectively. Class 12th students of the board have recorded a pass percentage of 70%. Gautam Raghuvanshi has topped the Uttar Pradesh Board High School exam with 97.17% marks. Shivam has secured the second rank with 97% marks and Tanuja Vishwakarma has secured the third rank with 96.83% marks. UP 12th class board exam result Tanu Tomar has emerged the topper of the UP Board Class 12 exams with 97.83% marks. The students can find their results on the official website www.upresults.nic.in Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has also tweeted to congratulate the students for their achievements.

UP Board Result 2019: Class 10th and 12th results declared, Gautam Raghuvanshi from Kanpur bagged the first rank

Jaipur, Jan 8 () Banking and financial operations were affected in Rajasthan where thousands of employees associated with trade unions participated in nationwide bandh on Wednesday.
Roadways buses, autorickshaw services were partially affected, particularly in areas like Sikar, Ganganagar and Hanumangarh.
However, the strike remained peaceful in the state.
"Direct and indirect banking business to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore got affected today due to the strike. Most of the bank employees in the state participated in the strike," Mahesh Mishra, general secretary of Rajasthan Pradesh bank employees union, said.
He said that of the total nearly 25,000 bank employees in the state, almost 20,000 joined the strike.
The employees of financial institutions including banks and LIC, workers and labourers held demonstrations in Jaipur and other districts against the policies of NDA government.
The impact of the strike was also there on state roadways buses' operations in Sikar, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh where the roadways employees associated with centre of Indian trade unions (CITU) went on strike. 
Similarly, thousands of workers of textile and cement industries, krishi mandis also participated in the strike in different parts of the state.
"Workers of textile units in Reengus (Sikar), Bhawanimandi (Jhalawar) and of other units located in Malviya nagar industrial area, vishwakarma industrial area of Jaipur participated in the strike. The strike impact was also there in krisi mandis of Hanumangarh, Ganganagar," CITU state president Ravindra Shukla said.
"The strike against the policies of NDA government received a good response in the state," he claimed.
However, the strike had no impact on markets and public transport services in other parts of the state.

Banking operations hit in Rajasthan due to trade unions' strike

New Delhi, July 1 (IANS) In a bid to help Indian students create solutions for real-world problems, Google on Wednesday announced three teams as winners of its Build for Digital India programme launched in partnership with the Ministry of Electronics &amp; Information Technology (MeitY) last year. The three winning teams were selected from over 7,000 students from more than 1,000 universities in India. Google supported students to build their prototypes by providing them access to curated content across technologies like mobile, web, machine learning and cloud. The three teams are The Third Eye from MIT world Peace University, Maharashtra for their theme 'Smart Cities and Infrastructure'; Anukai Solutions from Chitkara University, Punjab for the theme 'Smart Cities &amp; Infrastructure'; and ISpeakFree.LY team from Vishwakarma Institute of Technology, Maharashtra for the theme 'Accessibility &amp; Disability'. "We congratulate these student teams and every student that participated in this six-month journey. We are confident that their entrepreneurial spirit and innovative solutions will help address areas that are core to India's challenges," said Paul Ravindranath, Programme Manager, Google India Developer Relations. Out of over 3,000 project submissions, Google shortlisted 61 projects to attend an in-person mentorship boot camps across four cities in India. Based on feedback shared by the mentors, top 15 projects were shortlisted, before selecting the three winners. "We are glad to see the result of the strong collaboration between MeitY and Google in mentoring and upskilling over 7,000 engineering and technology students with more than 3,000 strong ideas and prototypes that aim to solve for India," said Abhishek Singh, CEO, MyGov, Ministry of Electronics and IT. September 17 was an auspicious day in India. Not only was it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/GodSaveTheOcean-This-Ganesh-Chaturthi-Mumbai-NGO-makes-idols-that-fish-can-eat/articleshow/48786857.cms">Ganesh Chaturthi</a>, but it also happened to be the birthday of India’s beloved Prime Minister, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Educate-In-India-Narendra-Modis-new-pet-project/articleshow/47456640.cms">Narendra Modi</a>. So, as is tradition, one would have expected not only his party (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>), but the entire country to shower extravagant blessings on its favourite son. But, hold your horses, because Modi had a diktat for how not to celebrate his birthday, a diktat that was supposed to have been followed to the ‘T’. 
 
The message was clear- the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BJP">BJP</a> top management was not to make Modi’s birthday a national event. After all, it is for dynastic parties like the <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword> to put up posters in every street corner wishing their “young” Vice-President a happy one! For once, perhaps, Modi-fans and sycophants, agreed. Some people might say, “Thank God for small mercies”, maybe this dissuaded <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/topic/Mallika-Sherawat">Mallika Sherawat</a> from reprising her Marilyn Monroe-act and singing “Happy Birthday, Prime Minister”. 
 
But such diktats do little to subdue the indomitable spirit of the young and enterprising. A company that promotes hygienic sanitation in India and builds toilets printed birthday cards to mark the Prime Minister’s birthday with a call for “janm-divas samaroh” (a birthday get-together). A young and very enterprising minister; who has been in the eye of storm recently, for his politically incorrect statements; was the chief guest of this get together and unveiled a 365 kg jumbo ‘laddu’ to mark the special day. But this Minister of State with Independent Charge of a couple of ministries was quick to dub the event as a conference to mark the organizer’s achievements in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=SWACHH+BHARAT">Swachh Bharat</a> Mission; a programme close to the birthday boy’s heart. 
 Another event, another young minister but the same date: September 17. This young and dynamic Minister of State decided to mark the PM’s birthday by calling it “an auspicious day”. Though he was quick to add that it was Ganesh Chaturthi as well as Vishwakarma puja that were being celebrated on the same day. But the minister wanted to make sure that his birthday wish was conveyed to the right man, so he decided to make the auspicious day remark again, the moment he saw his boss, the Cabinet Minister walk into the conference. After all, his boss is known to enjoy <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>’s confidence and have his ear. But seasoned politician that his boss is, he chose not to acknowledge the birthday remark of his junior minister. 
 
Maybe one should follow the First Citizen of India’s example and just take to Twitter for birthday wishes.

Chennai, Tamil Nadu's ruling <keyword id="19897149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dmk" source="keywords">DMK</keyword>, a key constituent of the INDIA bloc, in its manifesto released on Wednesday promised to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 if the opposition alliance wins the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls. Restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and holding polls there, scrapping the New Education Policy 2020, slashing fuel prices, annulling Article 361 of the Constitution that provides protection to governors from legal action and appointment of Governors following consultation with Chief Ministers, were among the key promises made by the DMK. The recommendations of the M S Swaminathan committee will be adopted to ensure that MSP for agricultural products "is set at total production cost plus 50 per cent," the DMK said. Also, it announced that if voted to power, the INDIA bloc will withdraw the Agnipath scheme and reintroduce "permanent recruitment service" in the Indian Armed forces. "From now on, population census, including caste-wise census and census concerning people below the poverty line, will be conducted by the Union government once every five years simultaneously." The DMK will firmly insist on the removal of Article 356, which allows the dismissal of duly elected state governments and imposition of President's rule. The Congress party's ally in Tamil Nadu said that "new constraints" on States' borrowing capacity, imposed by the union government beyond the limits in each state's FRBM-equivalent Act will be eliminated. "A recommendation to share cess revenues with states will be made. It will be proposed that the Finance Commission increase the horizontal devolution of tax revenue (to all States together) from 42 per cent to 50 per cent." The Union government's financial contributions to states will be based on the income tax and GST collected in those states. Thus, financial contributions will be assured based on the taxes collected within each state. The finance provided to states will be permanently determined based on the 1971 population. A 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and legislative assemblies will be implemented immediately. "DMK will insist that the Union government enact a law providing menstrual leave to women, emphasizing the journey towards gender equality." Petrol and diesel prices "will be set at Rs 75, Rs 65 (per litre)" and cooking gas cylinders shall be made available at Rs 500 (per cylinder). "The introduction of the Uniform Civil Code will be strictly prevented" to preserve India's secular nature as stated in the Constitution's preamble. "The 2019 CAA law will be repealed, and all minorities will be treated equally without any discrimination. The recommendations of the Sachar Committee for the improvement of the lives of Muslims and other minority communities will be implemented." Facilitation will be provided for <keyword id="21027983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sri-lankan-tamil" source="keywords">Sri Lankan Tamil</keyword> refugees to get Indian citizenship. Assistance will be provided to those who wish to return to Sri Lanka. Also, the manifesto said efforts will be made to implement reservation for minorities at the all-India level, similar to Tamil Nadu. "The financial assistance previously provided to minority educational institutions has now been stopped. Action will be taken to resume this assistance." For "political" reasons, funding from foreign countries to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has currently been stopped. "The Foreign Exchange Regulation Act will be properly amended, and measures will be taken to ensure these financial aids continue to reach NGOs without any problems." The proposal of 'One Nation, One Election' will be abandoned, and for the allocation of Lok Sabha seats to states, the current practice, based on the 1971 census will continue. All "people-unfriendly" laws introduced by the BJP government over the last 10 years will be reviewed immediately by the INDIA alliance government. The "labour-hostile laws" introduced by the BJP government will be "reformed." Through the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), the Union government will ensure a minimum pension of Rs 5,000 per month. The number of working days under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act will be increased from 100 to 150 days. "A wage of Rs 400 will be provided across states/ union territories nationwide." Disbanding the current NITI Aayog, set up by the BJP regime and establishing again the Planning Commission to draft plans based on the requests of state governments is another assurance the DMK has made. "Measures will be taken to reclaim Kachchatheevu to ensure India's security and to protect the welfare of the fishermen." A mandatory "cooling-off period" of 2 years will be introduced for retired judges and secretaries before they could join private companies or political parties, the manifesto said. Waiving loans and interests for farmers in nationalised and scheduled banks, waiver of educational loans for students, monthly entitlement of Rs 1,000 for all women in every state and formation of <keyword id="21027984" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-development-council" source="keywords">State Development Council</keyword> by including Chief Ministers were among the promises made by the DMK. Exemption for Tamil Nadu from the NEET exam and complete removal of toll booths on national highways, forms part of poll promises of the Dravidian party. Further, the DMK said amendments will be made to relevant laws to ensure that state governments, elected by the people, appoint Vice-Chancellors to state-run universities, rather than Governors. Stopping government's divestment from public sector enterprises, implementing the Sethusamudram project, law to ban online gambling, setting up a <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> branch in Chennai, providing statehood for <keyword id="19901639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="puducherry" source="keywords">Puducherry</keyword>, equal funding for all state languages including Tamil, were among the host of other promises made by the DMK. Establishment of Tamil departments in varsities and stopping construction of <keyword id="19950851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mekedatu" source="keywords">Mekedatu</keyword> dam were also promised by the DMK. <ul><li>The <keyword id="56459" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-Grants-Commission">University Grants Commission</keyword> released a list of 23 ‘fake universities’ in India. </li><li>Of the total 23 universities, 14 have been on the <keyword id="44171" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="UGC">UGC</keyword>’s list from 2005 — including Commercial University, United Nations University, Vocational University among others. </li><li>Despite that, several universities have also claimed on their websites that they are approved by the UGC.</li></ul>This admission season, the University Grants Commission is providing a much-needed reality check to prospective students and their parents. It released a list of <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/ugc-releases-fake-universities-list-up-delhi-has-the-most-ugc-ac-in-5845473/">23 ‘fake universities’</a>. Unfortunately, they are all functional, though unrecognised under the UGC Act. Most of such universities are from Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. These include Vishwakarma Open University for Self-Employment, Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Indian Institute of Science and Engineering, Delhi and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University. This is not the first time that these colleges have featured in the UGC’s annual list of fake universities. Of the total 23 universities, 14 have been on the <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/ugc-fake-university-notice-14-out-of-23-on-list-since-2005/article28691632.ece">UGC’s list from 2005</a> — including Commercial University, United Nations University, Vocational University and ADR-Centric Juridical University in Delhi. In fact, the United Nations University, Vocational University, Commercial University appeared in the list of fake universities last year too. Several of these universities continue to claim that they are approved by the UGC on their websites. Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society, Karnataka, St. John's University, Kerala and Raja Arabic University, Maharashtra have been operational since 2005, despite the UGC’s checklist. The University Grants Commission set up an anti-malpractice cell in 1995 to register complaints on established fake universities. While the board has filed FIRs against several institutions, many of them are still operational. In his remarks to the media ahead of the five-day session, Modi highlighted India's Chandrayaan-3 mission, the "unprecedented" success of its G20 presidency, the launch of 'PM Vishwakarma Mission' and inauguration of convention centre Yashobhoomi, asserting that many developments which have inspired the country and filled it with pride have taken place. There is an atmosphere of festivity and enthusiasm, and the country has been filled with renewed self-confidence, he said, asking parliamentarians to give maximum time to the short session. In an apparent reference to frequent protests by opposition members during previous sessions, often leading to disruptions of proceedings, Modi hoped everyone will shed shortcomings and carry the goodness as they move into the new building of Parliament on Ganesh Chaturthi on Tuesday. The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023 amends the Advocates Act, 1961, while the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023 repeals the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867. Besides, ‘The Post Office Bill, 2023’ has also been listed in the Lok Sabha business. The bill was earlier introduced in Rajya Sabha on 10 August 2023 and it repeals the Indian Post Office Act, 1898. While I was in my B-School, rural India meant 6, 40, 000 villages where untapped potential, shifting paradigms, and Trillion dollar economy resides. The numbers such as these only tell one part of the story. In reality, rural India, for its vibrancy, magnanimity &amp; terrain, is best captured in its dusty tracks and glorious sunny fields. I realized the truth, when I landed in Bihar &amp; Jharkhand hinterlands, straight from the air conditioned classrooms of Mumbai, to begin my sales &amp; marketing career. <keyword id="400895" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rural-marketing">Rural marketing</keyword> had been a buzz word and a luring career option for many since then. 
 Often people come and ask me if succeeding in the <keyword id="168535" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rural-markets">rural markets</keyword> easy. No, it isn’t. A lot of my peers joined the rural bandwagon and gave up due to several reasons—the primary one being lack of insights and knowledge of critical factors that ensure success in rural markets. In the following article, I will share some wisdom that aspiring graduates can utilise to tame the rural challenge. 
 
Bring out the wanderlust in you: The biggest challenge that a young, city-based management graduate will face is extensive travelling. Now, I am not talking about hopping flights from one city to another here; this involves travelling in overloaded auto rickshaws, buses and very often on foot—every day. Sounds scary? Then forget about rural marketing and choose some other profession instead—rural marketing is not his is not a one day rural immersion program, it’s your daily job! You would be surprised to know FMCG companies have made a mandate that its rural distribution field force directly distributes products in all towns having a population of 5000 people or above. This is why, on any given day, a rural salesman travels anywhere between 60 to 150 kms, meeting different stakeholders, consumer sets and customers, on-the-not-so-smooth roads. However, the experience is an enchanting one. Not only you get to meet new people but also get an opportunity to explore rural India cuisines, tradition and art. I, for instance, always carry a digital camera to capture India, which one can only experience while travelling in auto rickshaws, buses and trains. Sounds game? 
 
Be a Keen Observer: For a country as diverse and dynamic as ours, one will pick up a lot of anecdotes to share. For example, you have to see how men and women in dhotis &amp; ghunghats shop for deodorants and face washes in a newly inaugurated super market. One has to keep in mind that organizations are not sending their management trainees to sell ‘more’; they send a management graduate to field to look for consumers who have never been explored. This is what MNCs and Indian behemoths need, people with a keen eye to discover Indian consumers which hasn’t hitherto been addressed. 
 
Walk that extra mile: How about ditching the comfort of your AC hotel and camping in a rural hamlet for a week? While, today management graduates are offered mind boggling salaries and envious perks, it would be one hell of a story to be narrate in front of the top management and win admirers in the board room. This will also establish your reputation as someone who’s passionate about rural marketing. 
 
Embrace Challenges: It is very easy to take refuge under the argument like ‘I am only a trainee, I can do only so much Etc.’ One shouldn’t hesitate in putting their hand up when faced with adversity. However, one must note that there are 2 good things about volunteering for a challenge: (a) Nobody actually believes that you can do much, and thus expectations from you are generally lower and (B) Even, if you fail, you will learn lessons during the course, for which superiors will give you a pat on the back. 
 
Be a Disciplinarian: Remember hard work is the key to success—no matter where you start your journey from. As Harsha Bhogle once famously said in a lecture series at a B school, “One must work their backs off when starting their career.” To ensure that your rural stint turns out to be a success, maintain discipline that your work demands: right from waking up at 4’o clock in the morning to leave for far-off markets, to be dressed up sharp before you hit the market right at 9 AM. This is essential because a highly educated management graduate in the field is looked upon with respect and serves as an example to his team and partners. If you display lethargic and let go attitude while in the field, it would reflect poorly on you. 
 
If you follow these tips, you would thrive as a rural marketer. In addition, your rural stint will also show you how we Indians have gradually migrated from ‘Roti, Kapda, Makaan’ to ‘Bijli, Sadak, Pani’ ! The field will teach you many lessons, but only if you are willing to learn. Get started today!
