The acquisition is in line with V-Guard's strategy to become a significant player in the domestic Kitchen Appliances segment. The Sunflame brand has a pan <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> presence with a strong brand recall. SEPL's wide portfolio, product development capabilities and the recently established state-of-the-art integrated manufacturing facility provide the perfect opportunity for V-Guard to scale up its Kitchen Appliances business while also unlocking synergy benefits. V-Guard to acquire Sunflame Enterprises for ₹660 crore

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Consumer electricals maker V-Guard Industries on Friday reported 29.77 per cent rise in net profit at Rs 44.24 crore for December quarter 2019-20, helped by improvement in gross margins. 
The company had posted a profit of Rs 34.09 crore in October-December period a year ago, V-Guard said in a BSE filing.
Revenue from operations was up 5.08 per cent to Rs 631.88 crore during the quarter under review as against Rs 601.30 crore in the year-ago period. 
"Gross margins improved across all segments. Low volatility in commodity prices, combined with cost effectiveness measures pricing actions early in the year helped improved margins," said V-Guard in a post earning statement. 
Total expenses were at Rs 579.27 crore as against Rs 561.93 crore, up 3.08 per cent.
Revenue from the electronics segment was at Rs 153.78 crore and from electricals division at Rs 276.14 crore.
Consumer durables segment contributed a revenue of Rs 201.95 crore.
"Subdued demand conditions impacted top-line growth during the quarter. The Consumer Durables segment grew well, but other segments were impacted more by the overall slowdown," the company said.
Commenting on the outlook, company's MD Mithun K Chittilappilly said:"We are hopeful that we will be able to get back to higher growths in the coming quarters, once the macroeconomic conditions improve."
Shares of V-Guard Industries were trading at Rs 227.10 apiece, up 1.86 per cent, on the BSE. KRH

Before his death, following complications from surgery in 2018, Marchionne had been planning his retirement after decades in the car business, but not without frequent excoriations over what he believed was the industry's single biggest problem.Too many carmakers.Marchionne infamously consolidated his thoughts in a widely discussed, debated, and circulated 2015 presentation self-loathingly titled <a href="https://www.autonews.com/assets/PDF/CA99316430.PDF">"Confessions of a Capital Junkie."</a> I never got to ask Marchionne if he was making a reference to the essayist Thomas De Quincey's "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater," from 1822, a work considered by many to be the first addiction memoir, but even if he wasn't, addiction was his subject.Specifically, the "capital junkie" was Marchionne himself, and the addiction was to the cash that flows through the seemingly stable yet actually quite ragged and fragile veins of the global car business. The global auto industry is a multitrillion-dollar colossus, and it needs to be, because in Marchionne's estimation, the destiny of much of that money was to be wasted.Big carmakers, he argued, "spend vast amounts of capital to develop proprietary components, many not really discernible to customers." Lurking over the horizon was an even more disturbing nightmare of waste, with companies pouring research-and-development into equally undifferentiated but extremely expensive electric powertrains, advanced safety features, infotainment systems, and autonomous technologies. His solution was consolidation: fewer carmakers working with a smaller range of components and getting the capital monkey off their backs.Marchionne put his company — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, formed from the shotgun marriage of Fiat and bankrupt Chrysler during the 2008-09 financial crisis — where his mouth was. First, he borrowed a theme from the Chapter 11 struggles of General Motors and Chrysler and in 2015 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fiat-chrysler-ceo-marchionne-is-really-pushing-his-luck-with-hopeless-gm-merger-talk-2015-6">courted GM CEO Mary Barra for a merger</a>. Rebuffed, he kept the idea alive, and in 2019, after his death, FCA attempted to join with Renault, but the deal collapsed. Later, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-fiat-chrysler-has-sought-to-merge-with-another-automaker-2019-10">it found success in combining with the PSA Group</a>, although in 2020 the tie-up still hadn't been completed.In context, an FCA-PSA combination represented at least four carmakers becoming one: Fiat mated to Chrysler, PSA buying Opel-Vauxhall from GM in 2017. Would the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi arrangement, the industry's oldest, collapse <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/carlos-ghosn-what-really-happened-rise-and-fall-whats-next-2020-1">after the arrest of chairman Carlos Ghosn in Japan</a>, leaving Nissan and Mitsubishi as new targets for Toyota and sending Renault back to FCA-PSA?<h2>The black swan: Coronavirus shuts everything down</h2><div type="image" title="ford factory" height="2000" width="3000" msid="76536641" hostid="261"></div>The car business seemed to be preparing itself for Marchionne to get his wish from the great beyond when, in early 2020, the coronavirus pandemic crashed head on into the auto industry and shut it down — almost worldwide — for two months. In the US, a market that had boomed for five straight years, with automakers selling vehicles at a record or near-record pace, the monthly numbers plunged from levels that would have matched 2019 — about 17 million vehicles in total — to a pace of 8.5 million at the pandemic's peak in April, a nadir not seen since 1975.Although most market observers expected operations to bounce back, and despite most carmakers having amassed huge war chests of cash after years of SUV and pickup-truck sales, an unprecedented new hurdle had emerged for an already challenged industry.An M&amp;A surge wouldn't necessarily make all those challenges manageable. Few in the industry thought the Renault-Nissan alliance would succeed, and with Ghosn's arrest in 2018 the internecine rivalries between the Japanese and French partners were laid bare. When Alan Mulally came from Boeing to a tumultuous Ford Motor Co. before the financial crisis he immediately set about shedding prestigious brands such as Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Land Rover, which were consuming inordinate resources.But while the 20th century held the story of the auto industry's birth and triumphant rise to become the jewel of American business, the 21st has been shaping up to tell a different tale, with the old guard frantically trying to sustain its still-lucrative legacy while avoiding a distracted slide into irrelevance as younger and nimbler upstarts work to do what automobiles in the early 1900s did to the horse business of the 18th century.The coronavirus pandemic dramatically revealed the traditional industry's core vulnerability: a total shutdown of the manufacturing machine — vast, sprawling, and multinational, employing hundreds of thousands of workers in close quarters — literally cost a fortune. The major automakers have spent tens of billions since March to sustain an apparatus that has been almost completely idle.As Marchionne argued, a large part of that apparatus makes a redundant contribution. The industry, in 2015, would have to choose "between mediocrity or fundamentally changing the paradigm for the industry."<h2>Removing the problem of 'too much choice' from the market</h2>The numbers were on his side. The aerospace industry, for example, takes almost 20 years to consume the capital that the car business does in four. The largest sector in the entire economy, consumer and retail, takes 36 years. The problem for the auto industry, as Marchionne saw it, was then compounded by cyclicality, with companies swinging from robust profits to substantial losses. Ford went from having so much cash on hand — $20 billion — by the standards of the 1990s that analysts were worried that it had too much and wouldn't invest it correctly to losing almost $15 billion in 2009 and having to borrow $24 billion to avoid the same fate as bailed-out and bankrupt GM and Chrysler.<div type="image" title="Capital Junkie slide" height="1200" width="1904" msid="76536645" hostid="261"></div>For its part, GM had become such a capital-gobbling and inefficient enterprise by the early 2000s that it considered a strategic airlines-style bankruptcy as a preemptive strike against the debt load that would cripple it in the Great Recession. (The company's struggle to finance a bankruptcy at its former parts division, Delphi — among the largest and longest in US history at four years — killed that idea.)Industry-specific cost-saving measures, from reducing the number of vehicle platforms to partnering to share expenses, hadn't solved the core financial problem, according to Marchionne. A more drastic reduction was called for. Effectively, the industry needed to remove choice from the market, because much of that choice, especially at lower price levels and higher production scale, was an illusion. A $200,000 Porsche 911 is quite different from a $200,000 Ferrari Portofino, but a $25,000 Toyota RAV4 and a $25,000 Honda CR-V are basically the same car. At an extreme level, the industrial logic dictates that both vehicles could be produced at exactly the same scale but with no engineering differentiation, and a substantial gain in unspent capital by both Toyota and Honda.Consumers would still make buying choices based on brand values, loyalty, and relationship with dealers, but automakers would be able to curtail their capital addictions and invest in future technologies that would actually make a difference: electrified platforms, connectivity, data services, and automated factories.<div type="image" title="Elon Musk" height="2000" width="3000" msid="76536647" hostid="261"></div>The coronavirus pandemic has provided a glimpse into how these reforms could function. The Detroit automakers have moved first to restart their most important operations, building full-size pickups, because these are high-margin vehicles that represent a good return on capital as they offer so much differentiation to buyers. They've been less quick to resume manufacturing anything that has less differentiation, including sedans and crossovers.The situation in the US is less open to consolidation than Europe, where Marchionne proved his mettle as the savior CEO of Fiat. In the US, manufacturing capacity is more rational, and plants that haven't performed have been closed. Famously, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-factory-built-more-cars-when-it-belonged-gm-and-toyota-2017-10">GM-Toyota joint-venture in California, called NUMMI</a>, is now <keyword id="107096" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tesla">Tesla</keyword>'s main factory. And more recently there was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-tesla-should-rescue-a-gm-factory-in-ohio-2018-11">GM's plant in Lordstown, Ohio</a>, which had been making a slow-selling compact sedan, the Chevy Cruze.In Europe, there are too many factories for market demand. With limited future growth — electric cars would simply replace internal-combustion market share, not expand it — those factories should be in China, the market that has the greatest potential to rise in the next decade (it's already larger than the US market and could be more than twice as large by 2030, with as many as 40 million vehicles sold annually).<h2>A postponed reckoning with recovery</h2><div type="image" title="mary barra donald trump Sergio marchionne" height="2000" width="3000" msid="76536649" hostid="261"></div>The car industry encourages stasis. Although it is cyclical, over 100 years of history have taught executives that business as usual will return after recessions. Even amid the unprecedented pandemic collapse, industry observers and insiders expect a relatively strong recovery. In the US, if Congress undertakes a massive incentive effort to spur demand — a <keyword id="8763838" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="covid-19">COVID-19</keyword> version of 2009's $3 billion "cash for clunkers" program — the 2020 sales tally could match or exceed 2019.Marchionne, the quintessential opportunist, would call that a missed opportunity."It is ultimately a matter of leadership style and capability," he said of his cure for the capital junkie. The implication was that his leadership style and capability was the model, and that was his closing wink in the presentation — an indictment of the industry's ingrained cowardice, the endless excuses of the addict.Marchionne, by the way, knew addiction well, as a committed chain-smoker and sleepless espresso fiend who quit puffing only a few years before his death. The uncured addict also continues to assert an influence, even if it's posthumous. When I interviewed a Detroit executive a few years ago, after Marchionne's passing, I shared that I had found my final notes from a Sergio press conference in a notebook that I'd brought with me. The exec and I agreed that it was eerie. And my notes were full of capital-junkie follow-ups.Post-pandemic, the overwhelming urge initially will be to restore normality: factories back to full production, furloughed workers back on the job, cars and trucks selling briskly at dealerships, rock-bottom interest rates encouraging a fresh boom, automakers raking in a round of record profits.But the capital addiction could remain, encouraged by borrowing backstopped by governments eager to avoid mass unemployment and Great Depression-level deflation. This was the critical flaw in Marchionne's otherwise compelling take: Despite his workaholic crustiness and cosmopolitan affection for sarcasm, he was a constitutional optimist. If he weren't Chrysler would no longer exist. His outlook simply wasn't grim enough to consider the worst-case scenario: a euphoric comeback from the pandemic means that the capital junkie has once again postponed his reckoning with the hard road to recovery.

Something strange is happening between <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-changes-political-divides-2019-7">Gen Z men</a> and women. Over the past decade, poll after poll has found that young people are growing more and more divided by gender on a host of political issues. Since 2014, women between the ages of 18 and 29 have steadily become more liberal each year, while young men have not. Today, female Gen Zers are more likely than their male counterparts to vote, care more about political issues, and participate in social movements and protests.While the gender gap is an enduring feature of American politics, at no time in the past quarter century has there been such a rapid divergence between the views of young men and women. The startling speed of the change suggests something more significant is going on than just new demographic patterns, such as rising rates of education or declining adherence to a religion — the change points to some kind of cataclysmal event. After speaking with more than 20 Gen Zers, my colleagues at the Survey Center on American Life and I found that among women, no event was more influential to their political development than the #MeToo movement.In 2017, women around the world began speaking out about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment. Gen Zers were then in high school and college, and for them, the movement came at a formative moment. "Luckily I had that all over social media to shape the way I look at dating and men," a 21-year-old woman told us about #MeToo. She said it allowed her "to use other people's experiences to form a sense of putting a guard up." A 20-year-old woman offered a similar take — that #MeToo empowered her to stand up for herself: "I think it makes me less of a doormat."As I've <a target="_blank" href="https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/why-young-women-might-get-more-women-elected/">written previously</a>, the #MeToo movement united women politically. Although the challenges women face vary dramatically in the US, sexual harassment is a ubiquitous experience impacting women across lines of social class, politics, age, and race. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2018/02/21/587671849/a-new-survey-finds-eighty-percent-of-women-have-experienced-sexual-harassment#:~:text=It%20found%20that%2081%20percent,sexual%20harassment%20during%20their%20lifetime.">Eight in 10 women</a> say they have been sexually harassed at some point in their lives — and addressing that reality quickly became central for women. After the inauguration of Donald Trump, hundreds of thousands of women marched on Washington in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/largest-marches-us-history-2017-1">largest single-day protest</a> in American history.But while women were rallying together, many Gen Z men began to feel like society was turning against them. As recently as 2019, less than one-third of young men said that they faced discrimination, according to Pew, but today, close to <a target="_blank" href="https://storylines.substack.com/p/why-young-men-are-turning-against">half of young men</a> believe they face at least some discrimination. In a 2020 survey by the research organization PRRI, half of men agreed with the statement: "These days society seems to punish men just for acting like men."It increasingly feels like <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-trust-issues-government-business-college-other-people-institutions-2022-8">Gen Z men and women</a> are living on different planets, each guided by the belief that they are navigating uniquely hostile terrain — and understanding why is crucial to bridging the gap.<h2>#MeToo feminism</h2>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-the-metoo-movement-started-where-its-headed-tarana-burke-time-person-of-year-women-2017-12">#MeToo movement</a> established a sense of solidarity among young women. A survey conducted in 2022 found that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">two-thirds</a> of young women believe that in most or in every way, what happens to women in the US will have a bearing on their own lives — an idea known as "linked fate" in sociology. But this sentiment was not shared by older women: Only 36% of women older than 65 said the same. This bond has bled into Gen Z women's politics, especially around issues like abortion. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/gender-generation-and-abortion-shifting-politics-and-perspectives-after-roe/">survey</a> we conducted after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/supreme-court-abortion-decision-final-ruling-scotus-roe-v-wade-2022-6">Roe v. Wade was overturned</a> and just before the 2022 midterms found that no issue mattered more for young women than abortion: 61% said it was a critical concern, while only 32% of young men said the same. In the 2022 midterm elections, all young voters strongly supported Democratic candidates, but young women demonstrated <a target="_blank" href="https://www.slowboring.com/p/are-young-men-really-trending-to?utm_source=%2Fsearch%2Fyoung%2520men%2520and%2520vote&amp;utm_medium=reader2">much greater support than men</a>. Gen Z women have also united around the importance of female leadership and representation. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/09/27/views-of-obstacles-for-women-seeking-high-political-office/">recent Pew poll</a> found that 72% of women aged 18 to 29 believe there are too few women serving in "high political offices," a steep jump from the roughly half of women over 50 and less than half of young men who said the same. More than seven in 10 young women said that the lack of female representation in political office is because women are held to higher standards than men.This newfound <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/discrimination-at-work-women-all-ages-jobs-hiring-employer-bosses-2023-8">solidarity among women</a> is also showing up in the workplace. For decades a strong majority of men and women alike had reported a clear preference for a male boss. But the percentage of women who said they preferred a male boss plummeted 12 points between 2014 and 2017. By that year, the year of the most recent polling, a majority of women reported preferring a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/female-managers-pay-employees-more-fairly-salaries-than-males-study-2022-9">female boss</a> for the first time.At the same time, women's dissatisfaction with the status quo has only intensified. In 2016, 61% of women said they were satisfied with the way women are treated in American society, according to a Gallup survey. Today, that has dropped to 44%.<h2>Men shift to the right</h2>As women's political priorities have solidified, young men's priorities have melted into mush. Surveys consistently show that young men are far less likely than women to say any particular issue is personally important to them. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/the-2024-presidential-election-evolving-political-coalitions-and-familiar-partisan-divisions/">survey we conducted last year</a> found that young women expressed statistically significant greater concern for 11 out of 15 different issues, including drug addiction, crime, climate change, and gun violence. There was not a single issue that young men cared about significantly more than young women.Young men are also unhappy. For a growing number, feminism has less to do with promoting gender equality and more to do with simply attacking men. A 2022 survey by the Southern Poverty Law Center found that 46% of Democratic men under 50 agreed that feminism has done more harm than good — even more Republican men agreed. In our recent poll, roughly one in four male Gen Zers said they have experienced more gender discrimination than older men. And <a target="_blank" href="https://www.americansurveycenter.org/research/generation-z-and-the-transformation-of-american-adolescence-how-gen-zs-formative-experiences-shape-its-politics-priorities-and-future/">less than half of Gen Z men</a> identified as feminists, with only half saying they support the #MeToo movement, compared to 72% of women.One young man we interviewed said he didn't pay much attention to #MeToo: "It just seemed like a bit of buzz going on around celebrities, and awful things are happening in the world all the time. If I did ponder, it would bring me down and so I just choose to not even pay attention." Another said #MeToo was just something he picked up from "a woman's study class" in college but not anything that he thinks much about.The lack of interest could be because Gen Z men have their own issues. Richard Reeves, the founder of the American Institute for Boys and Men, has meticulously documented the challenges facing young men in America: They are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.the74million.org/article/author-richard-reeves-on-the-boys-education-problem-we-dont-like-to-talk-about/">struggling more</a> in school, are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2021/11/08/whats-behind-the-growing-gap-between-men-and-women-in-college-completion/">less likely</a> than women to go to and graduate from college, have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/evryman-mens-group-loneliness-feelings-therapy-2023-8">fewer close friends </a>than previous generations, and are four times as likely to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cdc-teenage-gen-z-american-suicide-epidemic">commit</a> <a target="_blank" href="https://aibm.org/research/male-suicide/">suicide</a> than women. Reeves argues that this state of affairs requires that we hold two seemingly contradictory ideas at once: Men at the highest rungs of the economic ladder are still advantaged by a system that perpetuates gender inequality, while men on the lower rungs of society face unique challenges because they are men. While women have turned to the left for answers to their problems, men are finding support on the right. Trump helped redefine conservatism as a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-aide-says-president-is-the-most-masculine-in-us-history-2021-1">distinctly masculine</a> ideology, stoking grievances and directing young men's frustration toward liberals and feminists. There are signs the message is resonating: <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-gen-z-college-republicans-want-gop-to-change-2020-11">Republican affiliation</a> among white men aged 18 to 24 jumped from 28% in 2019 to 41% in 2023, according to a <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/dellavolpe/status/1731053473070793013">Harvard Youth Poll</a>. Outside politics, right-leaning figures such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teachers-and-parents-talk-about-andrew-tates-influence-on-kids-2023-1">Andrew Tate</a>, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-says-dei-is-just-another-word-for-racism-2024-1">Elon Musk</a>, and Jordan Peterson are attracting young men looking for an ideological home.Most young men are probably not interested in making America great again, but they do feel acutely the need to secure a place for themselves in a culture that readily identifies male advantage but ignores the challenges young men face. Out of a sense of increased insecurity, more young men are adopting a zero-sum view of gender equality — if women gain, men will inevitably lose. It's an outlook that makes them defensive, encourages them to ignore or overlook enduring challenges women face in society, and can even spur misogyny. As one 35-year-old man told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2022/09/29/more-than-twice-as-many-americans-support-than-oppose-the-metoo-movement/">Pew in 2022 about #MeToo</a>: "Too many people are taking advantage of a serious situation because it's trendy or they are greedy or just want attention." And this attitude has real-world consequences: In the online gaming world, 75% of Gen Z women have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thegamer.com/women-abuse-sexism-in-online-games-depression/">reported experiencing harassment</a>.<h2>No Winners </h2>An <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/03/upshot/fewer-women-run-big-companies-than-men-named-john.html">oft-cited statistic</a> that conveys the enduring absurdity of the gender gap is that until <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2023-04-25/women-ceos-at-big-companies-finally-outnumber-those-named-john">very recently</a>, there were more CEOs named John than CEOs who are women. Across most industries, from politics to academia, men in American society still control more resources, earn higher wages, and enjoy more prestige. But few young men have any experience in the boardroom, and in the classroom, it's their female peers who are crushing it.But both genders are feeling increasingly precarious — and it's causing them to drift further apart. A recent <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/11/22/marriage-polarization-dating-trump/">Washington Post editorial</a> lamented what this growing political divide means for dating and marriage: If Gen Z men and women can't agree on politics, it's going to get harder for them to find a partner. But if anything, that understates the problem. Based on our interviews, there appears to be a growing eagerness among both young men and women to blame their problems on each other. And a society in which men and women see their interests as irrevocably opposed is not one that can last.<a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/author/daniel-cox">Daniel Cox</a> is director of the Survey Center on American Life and research fellow in polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute.

Gen Z's gender divide is huge &mdash; and unexpected

This particular Monday comes with something of a hangover in the tech industry, after a week that saw <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerberg-meta-facebook-new-era-efficiency-2023-2">Meta</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-could-be-cutting-more-costs-its-cfo-just-said-2023-2">Alphabet</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-no-layoffs-tim-cook-iphone-earnings-season-2023-2">Apple</a>, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/aws-slowing-growth-amazon-earnings-steeper-decline-ahead-2023-2">Amazon</a> report earnings that showed just how much of a toll the economy has taken on Silicon Valley. The tech CEOs have struck a tone of contrition, apologizing for over-hiring and losing focus at the height of the pandemic, even as they all lay off workers (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-no-layoffs-tim-cook-iphone-earnings-season-2023-2">all except Apple</a>, that is) and call for a renewed drive towards efficiency. But where does the buck really stop? My friend Ed Zitron argues in a column for Insider that workers are taking the fall and losing their livelihoods for what's ultimately those CEOs' fault: "Any executive who participates in decision-making that leads to hundreds or thousands of people losing their jobs should be the one leading them out the door," he writes. Twitter wants $100 from developers. Twitter CEO Elon Musk says that it's considering charging developers $100 a month for access to the social network's API, which lets third-party software access the platform's data. The Coast Guard has been working in conjunction with the Broward County Sheriff's Office, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Florida Department of Health, United States Customs and Border Patrol, port pilots, and other officials, in an inter-agency task force formed to deal with the crisis at Port Everglades.It will be left to that task force to approve any course of action regarding the stranded Holland America vessels, as well as other cruises stuck without a port of call.The plight of the Zaandam and the Rotterdam reflect the unprecedented blow that the coronavirus pandemic has had on the cruise industry. The Zaandam's cruise was scheduled to last 14 days, embarking from Buenos Aires, Argentina, on March 7. For some passengers, the cruise would end after 14 days in San Antonio, Chile. For others, it was due to April 7 in Fort Lauderdale. Those plans were diverted because of the coronavirus pandemic, and the cruise ship was closed out of ports across South and Central America.Now that four passengers have died onboard and at least two individuals have tested positive for COVID-19, it is unclear whether or not the ship will find safe harbor in the Sunshine State. Florida Ronald DeSantis, a Republican ally of United States President Donald Trump, has loudly objected to south Florida taking on the floundering cruise ships in the media.But conversations at the county level have been more sober and muted, with officials weighing the humanitarian issue presented by the Holland America ships with the possibility of endangering citizens of Broward County.<h2>'It has fallen on our doorstep'</h2>"This is a humanitarian crisis," Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said, addressing Broward County Mayor Dale V.C. Holness and the rest of the county commission on March 31. "This is not something that is exclusive to Forward county in terms of our responsibility. But it has fallen on our doorstep."He went on to say that the task force is still working with Carnival Corp. to come to a decision regarding the Zaandam and the Rotterdam. The ships are just two of around 15 cruise vessels looking to dock at Port Everglades."This is not a decision that should be taken lightly, nor is it a decision that should be exclusively made emotionally," Tony added. Broward County Commissioner Mark D. Bogen said that officials "can't seem to get a straight number from the cruise line," and asked Burdian if there was a way to verify Carnival's claims about the number of sick individuals on its ship. He cited conflicting reports about the number of COVID-19 cases onboard."We rely on these companies who care about their reputation to submit information that is true and correct," Burdian said.Carnival's Chief Maritime Officer William Burke addressed also the county commissioners, to share the company's perspective as well as updates from the ships. "We are coming to the place of last resort," he said. According to Burke, the Zaandam attempted to dock in Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia."And I heard this morning that Mexico is saying no," he said, adding that the ship is currently attempting to arrange for two seriously ill individuals to medically evacuated to Mexico. He said the Zaandam currently has four doctors and five nurses, while the Rotterdam has two doctors and four nurses."Where today as of last night, our numbers were 14 passengers who are currently experiencing influenza-like illness," Burke said. "Seven of those are in our hospital, and are being treated. Two of those are those that we would like to Medvec."He said that reports in the media have been higher because it is Holland America's protocol to report all those who have reported to the ship's medical center. According to Burke, the Zaandam initially received 200 COVID-19 rapid-test kits. "At this point, we are assuming the people who get sick have COVID," he said. Burke added there have been zero new cases today, one yesterday, and three on March 29. Regarding Carnival's plan of getting healthy passengers home, he said that the company would arrange for charter or "charter-like" flights to return guests to their country of origin, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. Passengers residing nearby in Florida would be provided with car rides home.In his comments, Burke also stressed Carnival's ties to Broward County."I feel a little uncomfortable pointing this out," he said. "We do have a couple of offices in Broward. We do have 115 employees in Broward. We are not only a requester in this situation, we are also a user of your wonderful services. The Zaandam is home-ported in Port Everglades."At this time, Carnival is proposing a plan to only disembark passengers in Florida. Crew members would remain on the ships. At the meeting, commissioners raised multiple questions regarding whether or not the county could trust the cruise line to honor its agreement to not disembark ill crew members.At one point, Bogen raised the <a href="https://www.local10.com/news/local/2020/03/08/cdc-forces-regal-princess-to-remain-offshore-near-south-florida-until-2-crew-members-are-tested-for-coronavirus/">breaking issue</a> of the Regal Princess docking in Port Everglades with two COVID-19 positive employees onboard. Carnival Corp. owns both Princess Cruises and Holland America. Burke said he was not familiar with the situation regarding the Regal Princess.<h2>'No one wants to turn anyone away'</h2>During the meeting, county commissioner Michael Udine expressed frustration about the matter of jurisdiction regarding the stranded cruises."Why is this being hurled on the people with the least amount of ability to solve this?" Udine said. "Where is this the idea of bringing this to a naval station? I just don't understand how this has simply become a Broward County issue?"Udine said that Broward County officials have fielded outreach from politicians across the United States with constituents on the Zaandam and the Rotterdam. "No one wants to turn anyone away, so there's additional suffering or additional health-related issues," he added.<h2 style="font-weight: 400;">'Lives are at risk'</h2>At one point during the March 31 meeting, Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr remarked that many people "didn't realize" that many of the passengers aboard the Zaandam and the Rotterdam are United States citizens. There are 304 US nationals aboard.Some of that confusion may stem from Florida Governor Ronald DeSantis' rhetoric regarding the ship. Appearing on Fox News on March 30, DeSantis said he did want to see Holland America passengers taking up hospital beds or resources."Not only that, I think a lot of these are foreigners," DeSantis said."We cannot have people who aren't even Floridians dumped into South Florida, using up those valuable resources," he added.DeSantis said he was in touch with the White House, as well as county officials, about the situation."We view this as a big, big problem and we do not want to see people dumped in southern Florida right now," he told Fox.The Florida governor's office directed Business Insider to DeSantis's March 30 <a href="https://www.facebook.com/FoxNews/videos/2618522951753418/?v=2618522951753418&amp;external_log_id=b76972fb1e225be8753a81c2a1fa2318">press conference</a>, in which he appeared alongside officials from Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties to discuss the state's COVID-19 response. DeSantis announced that he signed an executive order that "codifies common set of rules regarding safer at home." "Another issue that we're monitoring is the cruise ship coming through the Panama Canal," DeSantis said in the press conference. "We think it's a mistake to be putting people into southern Florida right now given what we're dealing with."He said that Holland America should arrange for medical personnel to be dispatched directly to the ship to "tend to folks who need medical attention.""But a lot of these are foreign nationals," he said. "And we want to make sure we have the beds available for the folks here in southern Florida."Broward County's Holness also appeared alongside DeSantis at the press conference."Clearly what must be done is that we safeguard the people of south Florida," he said. "And they haven't given us a full list of all those who are on board and what the conditions are. So there's a lot of work that is yet to be done in order for us to understand who's on there and what the situation is."He also concurred with the governor that the "possibility" of Holland America organizing "on-ship" medical treatment had to be considered. In response to an inaudible question at the press conference, DeSantis reiterated that he has spoken with the White House about the issue. He said that the cruise line should "work with some of the folks in DC." Regarding the option of diverting the cruise ship entirely, DeSantis said he did not believe that he had the power to do so, noting that it lay with the county or the White House. He said that he was waiting to hear back from the White House.White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.DeSantis said that he - alongside Holness and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Giménez - met with "the cruise ship people" several weeks ago. Business Insider reached out to DeSantis' office to clarify whether those individuals were Holland America leadership or cruise industry executives, but has not heard back. The governor went on to say that there is "nothing" that says Florida must take the ship, that the state is "just a convenient place.""The problem is that then that takes resources away from the folks in south Florida and, yes, we do have available beds but I don't want it to be a situation where those bed could've gone to Floridians," he said.The relative of one group of United States citizens on board the Rotterdam told Business Insider that she found DeSantis' comments "unbelievable," and took issue with his use of the word "dumped" in particular."I am appalled," she told Business Insider. The primary purpose of the transfer was to balance the workload between the two ships and to provide immediate relief to the service staff on Zaandam, which has fewer crew members working at this time.The two ships will remain together for the rest of the journey. Guests on both ships will remain in their staterooms until disembarkation, and all necessary precautionary measures are being taken on both ships that have been developed in conjunction with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Guests have not been ashore since March 14 in Punta Arenas, Chile, and have been self-isolating in their staterooms since March 22.Guests who moved to Rotterdam completed a health screening prior to transferring via sanitized tender, with all other necessary precautions in place, including wearing masks, social distancing and direct transfer to their new staterooms. No guests who had any respiratory symptoms in the last ten days were transferred, and no Zaandam crew were transferred to Rotterdam.Currently 73 guests and 116 crew members on Zaandam have reported influenza-like illness symptoms.There are 797 guests and 645 crew on Rotterdam. On March 21, Zaandam was originally scheduled to begin a 20-day South America and Panama Canal cruise from San Antonio, Chile, to Fort Lauderdale.<h2>Read the Panama Canal Authority's full March 29 statement:</h2>The Panama Canal facilitated this Sunday the transit of Holland America's MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam cruise ships, under extraordinary conditions and for humanitarian reasons. After not being able to dock at ports in South America, the MS Zaandam arrived to the assigned anchorage in Panama on March 27. Holland America's MS Rotterdam cruise ship arrived earlier that day and was assigned anchorage awaiting the arrival of the MS Zaandam, in order to transfer healthy passengers and medical supplies, following strict protocols developed in conjunction with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Passengers transfer continued throughout Saturday, March 28, and the delivery of additional supplies was completed this Sunday, March 29. Panama's Health Ministry (MINSA) authorized the MS Zaandam's transit on March 28 after receiving information on the sanitary conditions of the vessel, including four deaths on board. On Saturday, the Panama Canal also authorized the transit of the MS Rotterdam, under the same conditions established by MINSA, allowing both ships to transit one after the other. The Panama Canal has taken extreme sanitary measures to transit these two ships, including using the Neopanamax Locks as means to reduce to a minimum the number of Canal employees involved in the transit. The MS Zaandam had booked, since April 2018, a transit through the Panama Canal for April 1, 2020. Transiting the Panama Canal will decrease travel time to a port on the Pacific Coast of the United States by 2.5 days. But now, with the authorization of Panama's Ministry of Health, the ship will be "scheduled for transit after entering Canal waters," according to the statement. The statement said that the Zaandam was originally scheduled to transit the canal on April 1.The Zaandam is now anchored outside Panama Canal waters, undergoing a Panama Maritime Authority-approved operation in which healthy passengers are being moved to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/holland-american-coronavirus-covid-19-zaandam-rotterdam-2020-3">Holland America's MS Rotterdam</a>. They also sell lots of different types of vehicles, from compact hatchbacks to hulking pickups.Tesla, in the other hand, currently sells just two vehicles, the Model S sedan and the Model X SUV. The Model 3 will change that, but as the launch grows nearer, a fair amount of media attention has shifted to Tesla's future vehicle plans.The first post-Model 3 vehicle will likely be a compact SUV, dubbed the Model Y. With Tesla due to announce its first-quarter delivery numbers in the next week, there's some buzz around whether the company might divulge some details about the Model Y.It would makes sense, as with not much happening that really new with Tesla until the Model 3 arrives, CEO Elon Musk will want to sustain media interest. Outside the tech industry, the Model Y looks obvious and logical - but it also looks like a classic example of what in the car business in knows as "platform engineering." Big carmakers use common undergirdings to built a variety of different cars. This has been the Model Y story since Tesla started talking about it, and anyone familiar with carmaking gets it.
