I was overjoyed," Rajan, 31, said.While the two millennials live two thousand kilometers apart, Goswami and Rajan are part of a massive churn in India's automobile industry. Both Goswami and Rajan purchased used cars – a rapidly growing segment in India powered by digital disruption, newfound love from millennials, a buffet of financial options, and pandemic travel restrictions.<h2>Four new used-car unicorns</h2>It's a good time to be a used-car startup in India.For every new car sold in the country last year, about 1.4 used cars were sold, up from <a href="http://www.indianbluebook.com/storage/app/media/Insights/India-Pre-Owned-Car-Market-Report-3rd-Edition-2019.pdf">1.2 before the pandemic.</a>Between November 2020 and November 2021, four India-based startups that exclusively sell used cars became unicorns (startups valued at $1 billion or more) and minted a record amount of investment. India is home to about 80 unicorns total.The four startups – Cars24, Droom, Spinny, and CarDekho – raised over $1.5 billion total from global marquee investors. That's more than what these platforms raised in the previous five years put together, figures from their valuation announcements show.Market leader Cars24 saw its valuation nearly double within three months late last year. In September, it was valued at $1.84 billion; the latest funding round in December put the valuation at $3.3 billion. The company is expanding its global footprint with new branches in Australia and the UAE, and it's <a href="https://www.exchange4media.com/marketing-news/cars24-announces-international-expansion-now-operational-in-uae-australia-113641.html">eyeing the Southeast Asian market.</a> Those pouring the money include New York-based investment firm <a href="https://www.spinny.com/about-us/">Tiger Global,</a> American giant <a href="https://india.sequoiacap.com/india/companies/cars24/">Sequoia Capital</a>, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/funding/cardekho-enters-unicorn-club-with-250-million-funding-led-by-leapfrog-investments/articleshow/86973768.cms">LeapFrog Investments</a>, Abu Dhabi-headquartered <a href="https://tracxn.com/d/companies/spinny.com">ADQ</a>, and China-based venture capital firm <a href="https://www.cars24.com/blog/cars24-raisesi-450-million-nearly-doubles-its-valuation-to-1-84-billion/">DST Global.</a> And in December, India's star sportsman Sachin Tendulkar <a href="https://auto.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/aftermarket/sachin-tendulkar-invests-in-used-car-platform-spinny/88276324">invested an undisclosed amount </a>in Spinny.<h2>The pandemic and millennials are behind the change</h2>The pre-owned car market started to outpace the new car market during the pandemic. The poor economic situation dented the demand for new cars, and the global semiconductor shortage prolonged the waiting period. Public <keyword id="11894924" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation" source="Orion">transportation</keyword>, too, has taken a hit. "What happened in the last year during the pandemic is that the way people commute has changed," said Kushal Bhatnagar, an engagement manager at consulting and research firm RedSeer. "During the pandemic era, the usage of [ride-hailing services] Ola and Uber dropped. Shared mobility as a concept declined in India."All these factors have had an unintended spillover on the used car market, providing a jumpstart for startups like Droom, an online-only marketplace that offers fair pricing assessments and digitized vehicle histories.<div type="image" title="Droom CEO Sandeep Aggarwal" height="2661" width="3547" msid="90288740" hostid="261"></div>Droom CEO Sandeep Aggarwal said the growth in India's used-car market is driven by the country's growing middle class and the rise of a young population armed with disposable income."We get about 16 million monthly user traffic and about 75% of them come from millennials," Aggarwal told Insider. Indeed, millennials make up 80% of the buyer base for used cars, one <a href="https://www.motownindia.com/Bureau/Auto-Industry/3192/Millennials-Gen-Z-appetite-for-used-cars-on-the-rise-Cars24-Ipsos-Report-Motown-India-Bureau">industry research</a> found.The CEO added that the demand for used cars in India is reflective of a change in generational mentality."'My father had a scooter. After working for 25 years, he bought his first car at the end of his career. I don't want that. I want a car now,' is what a millennial thinks," Aggarwal said. The age group driving this growth is between 30 and 35," echoed Anurag Jain, the cofounder of CarDekho.<h2>Moving towards a focus on the user</h2>With an estimated <a href="https://redseer.com/newsletters/indias-used-car-market-is-unstoppable-with-its-steady-and-tech-driven-growth/">30,000 brick-and-mortar dealers</a> across the country, India's used-car market is a highly fragmented area dominated by mom-and-pop operations. Until about five years ago, most used-car services were seller-centric listing services. The segment was riddled with untrustworthy agents and cumbersome paperwork.But this is slowly changing. The segment is moving towards user experience-focused systems and buyer-focused business models.Consider CarDekho, a 14-year-old company that hit unicorn status in October. The marketplace offers end-to-end services such as doorstep pickup, financing options, insurance, post-service warranty, and long-term maintenance packages."In India, it will not be a pure-play digital transaction where one book and get the car delivered to home. Only <a href="https://www.census2011.co.in/hhassets.php">about 4% of households</a> in the country own a car.Globally, China leads the used-car market with 21.4 million units sold in 2019, per <a href="https://redseer.com/newsletters/indias-used-car-market-is-unstoppable-with-its-steady-and-tech-driven-growth/">RedSeer</a>. The US follows in second place with 17.5 million used cars sold in 2019. India is in fifth, with 4.4 million units sold.The country's automotive industry is expected to be worth $300 billion by 2026, per an <a href="https://www.ibef.org/industry/automobiles-presentation">estimate</a> from government-backed think tank India Brand Equity Foundation. The business of pre-owned vehicles stands to play a key role in this growth. From the 4.4 million used cars purchased in 2021, numbers are expected to almost double in five years, per <a href="https://redseer.com/newsletters/indias-used-car-market-is-unstoppable-with-its-steady-and-tech-driven-growth/">RedSeer's forecast</a>.For now, India's used-car unicorns are aggressively adding more manpower and markets to capitalize on opportunities. Droom and CarDekho are eyeing a public listing in the coming months."If we look at the large economies like the US, Western Europe or Japan, we're talking about 70%+ adoption of cars," said Droom's Aggarwal. "In India, the motorization adoption is set to grow from 22 cars per 1000 people to 200 cars per 1000 people in three decades."

Online marketplace OLX plans to open 150 ‘offline’ stores for buying and selling of used cars across India

The partnership will kick off with 1,200 bikes OYO outlets in Bangalore and Hyderabad. Travellers can book bikes either by the hour, or on a daily basis. Drivezy, an Indian start up, was founded back in 2015. It offers cars, motorbikes and scooters on rent across 11 cities in India across 100 locations. Currently, it manages 4,000 cars and 14,000 bikes. The company claims to be the fastest growing vehicle sharing platform, and the largest two-wheeler sharing service in the country. Drivezy has plans to grow even further. The company signed an agreed with Harbourfront Capital for $100 million to bring more assets on-board. So far this year, it added 12,000 vehicles to its fleet. Leave it where you want Drivezy is currently working on a feature that will allow travellers to pick up and leave their vehicles anywhere they want — as long as they're within the city limits. This 'free floating' model comes with a significant catch. Drivezy needs to find a way to ensure its vehicles aren't vandalised or damaged, after being dropped off. "To counter this, we are establishing a dense network of parking spaces in all operational cities and our association with OYO is a step in that direction," said Ashwarya Singh, CEO of Drivezy. Drivezy's also using technology like keyless IoT locks and unlocking using QR codes to safeguard their vehicles.

Passenger car major <keyword id="44883" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="maruti-suzuki" source="Orion">Maruti Suzuki</keyword> India Ltd had transported over 3.2 lakh vehicles in 2022 through Indian Railway and is setting up dedicated railway sidings at its facilities in Haryana (Manesar) and Gujarat, said a top company official. The company last year transported over 3.2 lakh vehicles using rail wagons, the highest in a calendar year since 2013 when the company got the Automobile Freight Train Operator (AFTO) license. "Going forward, we aim to further increase these numbers. For this, we are setting up dedicated railway sidings at our facilities in Haryana (Manesar) and Gujarat," <keyword id="13455711" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="hisashi-takeuchi" source="Orion">Hisashi Takeuchi</keyword>, Managing Director &amp; CEO, said. "Aligned with the Government of India's aim to reach net zero emissions by 2070, we have enhanced our efforts to reduce carbon footprint in our business operations. Our strategy to increase the use of rail mode in outbound logistics has resulted in dispatching record 3.2 lakh vehicles using railways in CY2022," he said. According to him, the use of railway wagons instead of trucks has resulted in offsetting around 1,800 MT of CO2 emissions. Maruti Suzuki uses 40 specially designed railway rakes to transport vehicles across the country. Each rake has a capacity to carry over 300 vehicles. With this one-way segment a customer can drive from point A to point B. The launch of one-way intercity launch adds flexibility and options to people’s travel plans. Zoomcar is bringing new innovations to the Hop service which will be available across 24 cities including intra-state and eventually inter-state routes as well. Mumbai, Jun 26 () Mercedes-Benz cars in the country with advanced multimedia infotainment system, MBUX, will now come loaded with MapmyIndia COVID-19 guide, which will help the users in getting all information related to the pandemic on a real-time basis, a release said on Friday. The infotainment system will enable users to navigate to the nearest COVID-19 testing centres using the most updated information provided by ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research), with the infotainment panel displaying the centre name, address and phone number upon request, it said. The German car maker's Bengaluru-based R&amp;D centre, Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI), is also working to include coronavirus infection treatment centres and many other unique features as well in the the latest system, which has been developed by engineers at MBRDI in collaboration with MapmyIndia, as the next step, said the release. Mercedes-Benz India's recently launched all-new S-class SUV, GLS has fully packed connected services through its latest MBUX system. "Our infotainment team, which have a key role to play on the entire MBUX including the Interior assist &amp; rear seat entertainment, earlier this year was instrumental in launching another timely innovation for Korean market where the infotainment system helps in navigating to stores with N95 masks/ respirators, also," said Manu Saale, Managing Director and CEO, MBRDI. The technology platform for MBUX both onboard (car) &amp; offboard (cloud backbone) is built in such a way to accelerate new services and features to the customer, he added. Keeping in mind the vast online commuter market, India’s top cab aggregator, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> is now prepping-up to introduce <keyword id="3071546" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="motorcycle-taxis">motorcycle taxis</keyword>. 
 The Bangalore-based cab aggregator also plans to launch a shuttle bus service. Not just this, but Ola users will now be able to avail <keyword id="3072073" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="car-pooling">car-pooling</keyword> feature on its mobile application, reported The Economic Times. 
 
The motorcycle taxis and shuttle service, however, might face regulatory issues as these do not have any legal frameworks so far. 
 
Internal sources, requesting anonymity, informed that the bike taxis will be on the lines of Indonesia's GoJek, Blue-Jek and Grabbike, which is being used to transport people as well as goods. 
 Another major add-on to the mobile application, <keyword id="3071503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="OlaShare">OlaShare</keyword>, is being worked-on for quite some time now. The company, however, declined to respond on the email queries by the business daily. 
 
The firm is also in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Ola-Cabs-new-round-of-fund-raising-to-value-it-above-5-billion/articleshow/49072304.cms">advanced stage of closing a financing round</a> of about $500 million (Rs 3,000 crore), which will give a muscle to the firm for its forthcoming plans. 
 The new services, if compared to the other cab-service providers, might give a tough fight to San Francisco-based <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, which is targeting to enhance its business outside the US with India being one of the most potential markets.

Kartik Hosanagar, a professor of technology and digital business at The Wharton School termed the bike-taxi move an interesting one and said, "As of now, it should be seen as an experiment. But one with tremendous potential for Ola... However, the company would have to navigate around regulations." 
 
HeyTaxi, a Mumbai-based motorcycle-taxi company which was launched in June, came under fire from the city's transport department, which has termed the service illegal. 
 A top official at <keyword id="151058" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-Transport-Department">Delhi Transport Department</keyword> said the state was framing a scheme for a motorcycle-taxi service but there were issues to consider. "As of now it will be deemed illegal. We were planning to launch such a service in Delhi but have put it on hold due to safety concerns," he said. Instead, Delhi launched a scheme for renting self-driven motorbikes in August. 
 
Car-pooling services, too, are in a regulator grey zone. Several state governments encourage personal carpooling as a way to lessen traffic and pollution, but as a business, the service is not covered under any legal framework. 
 
Safety is another area of concern, as riders would have to car-pool with strangers. Meru Cabs verifies co-riders with their PAN or Aadhaar numbers while BlaBlaCar mandates a social network account such as Facebook for logging in. 
 
Experts, on the other hand, agreed upon the fact that car-pooling as a business has huge potential.

Ola is going for the kill! Uber already sees it as competition

Starting January, Delhi government would make sure that both Delhi’s traffic and the polluted air that floats in Delhi are kept under check. It would be done by cutting the number of private cars on its roads by about half, allowing private cars with odd digits as registration numbers on one day and those with even on the next. The Delhi government is also making sure that there are enough buses, autorickshaws and Metro coaches to accommodate the resulting number of people relying on Delhi public transports. 
 On the other hand, the brains behind taxi companies and car aggregators such as <keyword id="1042120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber">Uber</keyword>, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword> and <keyword id="205081" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Meru">Meru</keyword> Cabs are already planning on steps to take the best advantage of this step taken by the <keyword id="260213" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Arvind-Kejriwal">Arvind Kejriwal</keyword> government. 
 Uber, for example, is planning to launch <keyword id="6591085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="UberPool">UberPool</keyword>, its car pooling service, in Delhi after a successful run in Bengaluru. While Bangalore UberPool service is only meant for commercial vehicles, the Delhi arm would target the 28 lakh private car owners. 
 
Meru, on the other hand, will be launching a mobile app in January so that passengers can pool cabs online. "The app will identify two people within a radius of two-three km travelling in the same direction and can share their taxi ride," Meru CEO Siddhartha Pahwa told ET. "The driver will pick one person first and within 10 minutes will also pick up the second person." Meru, which is already running many cabs on Delhi roads, is expecting almost 30% rise in the demand for cabs during the trial period. To attract customers, it would offer 35% discount for ride sharing. Even if a passenger can't find someone to share the ride, he or she would still be given the discount. 
 
Ola, the taxi aggregator service, recently launched minibus shuttle services in Gurgaon and Noida, which they plan to extend to Delhi. The taxi-sharing app is being beta-tested in Bengaluru right now, and could very well be rolled out in NCR to make use of the odd-even rule. 
 
Delhi is one of the world's most heavily polluted cities, which is why the government has planned to launch this odd-even scheme. Starting January 1, a 15-day trial period would begin between 8 am and 8 pm, Monday to Saturday. As per the rule, odd-numbered cars would be allowed to run on odd dates and those with even numbers would be allowed on even dates. 
 
Home Minister Rajnath Singh has given his support to this the plan at a recent meeting he had Delhi CM Kejriwal. It means that Delhi Police, which comes under the control of the central government, would be taken on board to ease the application of this rule. 
 
To discuss a carpooling policy, fleet owners and taxi aggregators, including representatives of Pool my Ride, Embarq India, Tripda.in, Carzonrent, Uber, Ola, Shuttl.com, NearGroup.in, Ibibo Ryde, Mega Carpool Pvt., Mega Cabs, LetsDriveAlong.com, BaxiTaxi, Orahi and 
Cykul, had a meeting with the members of the Delhi Dialogue Commission, which serves as the think tank of the Delhi government.

Cab aggregators to reap the benefits of Delhi’s Odd-Even car rule

The e2O is the latest offering from the Mahindra Group, which says it will meet its "5 Cs" framework: clean, convenient, connective, clever, and cost effective.
The four-seater e2O (pronounced "ee-too-oh" has already been certified as road-worthy.
Its range of 100 km (62 miles) is not especially impressive compared to American <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Electric-cars">electric cars</keyword>. But it is likely sufficient for the commutes of the city residents Mahindra Reva, the electric vehicle arm of the investment group, is targeting.
Reva used to sell a two-seater mini car, the REVAi, which it will stop selling to focus on the e2O, the <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/drivers-seat/2013/01/08/sun-powered-car-to-join-mahindra-lineup-in-india/?mod=WSJBlog">Wall Street Journal reported</a>. The e2O will be the only electric four-seater car in India.
The car can be charged via a common 15 ampere outlet, or using what Mahindra calls "Sun2Car," where the e2O is parked under a canopy of <keyword id="45681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar">solar</keyword> panels that produce electricity and transfer it to the car's lithium ion batteries.
The e2O will be built at a Bangalore plant capable of producing 30,000 <keyword id="20632" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cars">cars</keyword> per year.
Last month, Mahindra reportedly considered buying Aston Martin, pulling out of a deal before <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/investindustrial-buys-aston-martin-stake-2012-12">Italian company Investindustrial purchased the luxury brand</a>.
