Climate Action 15: 2024's top global innovators powering green solutions

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Singapore is trying to fight rising temperatures partly by making its buildings greener, literally.</li><li>This involves covering rooftops and vertical facades with gardens.</li></ul>As the world heats up — and the urban <a href="https://www.epa.gov/green-infrastructure/reduce-urban-heat-island-effect#:~:text=%22Urban%20heat%20islands%22%20occur%20when,heat%2Drelated%20illness%20and%20mortality." target="_blank" rel="noopener">built environment makes things worse</a> — Singapore is at the leading edge of efforts to cool cities.The hot and humid city-state is among the most densely populated in the world, and it's seeing its temperatures <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrQ9zjvmD6k" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rise particularly quickly</a>. The country approaches this task in various ways — from designing buildings to facilitate airflow to painting rooftops with reflective coats. One central strategy is to literally make the city greener by covering rooftops and the facades of buildings with plants.Cities often suffer from the <a href="https://climate.mit.edu/explainers/urban-heat-islands" target="_blank" rel="noopener">urban heat-island effect</a>, when the built environment makes cities hotter than neighboring rural areas. Buildings and asphalt absorb heat, while cars and other vehicles emit even more heat, and a lack of greenery in cities exacerbates the issues. Plants cool buildings and cities by absorbing sunlight, creating shade, and releasing water that cools the air. Of course, they also absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that contributes to the climate crisis. Under its Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme, Singapore pays property owners up to 50% of the cost of installing green rooftops and facades. This amounts to up to $200 a square meter for roofs and $500 a square meter for vertical plantings, <a href="https://skyrisegreenery.nparks.gov.sg/incentive-scheme/about/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the government</a>.The greenery also reduces buildings' carbon footprint and saves property owners on air conditioning and other energy costs. And the green buildings can attract tourists looking to <a href="https://www.alajode.com/ecotourism-in-singapore/#7-8-explore-singapore%E2%80%99s-green-buildings-" target="_blank" rel="noopener">patronize eco-friendly businesses</a>. <div type="image" title="Singapore's three-towered Marina Bay Sands Hotel has plantings on its balconies." height="640" width="1280" msid="103790582" hostid="261" sizebytes="114272"></div>Many of these plant-covered structures have received international attention. One skyscraper that opened in Singapore last year has <a href="https://www.cnn.com/style/article/capitaspring-singapore-skyscraper-biophilic/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 80,000 trees and plants</a> on it. The city-state's Nanyang Technological University has <a href="https://projects.archiexpo.com/project-23031.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">been celebrated</a> for its green roofs. And <a href="https://www.archivibe.com/kampung-admiralty-by-woha-wins-world-building-of-the-year-award-at-world-architecture-festival-2018/#:~:text=Architecture%20Festival%202018-,Kampung%20Admiralty%20by%20WOHA%20wins%20World%20Building%20of%20the,at%20World%20Architecture%20Festival%202018&amp;text=Our%20congratulations%20goes%20to%20WOHA,their%20Kampung%20Admiralty%20in%20Singapore!" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a mixed-used complex with extensive green roofs won</a> the 2018 World Architecture Festival's award for building of the year. This is all part of Singapore's decadeslong effort to <a href="https://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/history/events/a7fac49f-9c96-4030-8709-ce160c58d15c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">become the "Garden City."</a> Its <a href="https://www.greenplan.gov.sg/targets" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Green Plan 2030</a> sets out a series of ambitious environmental goals, including doubling the rate at which trees are planted between 2020 and 2030, making at least <a href="https://wedocs.unep.org/bitstream/handle/20.500.11822/34976/SGB.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">80% of its buildings green</a>, and creating 200 hectares of green roofs by 2030. Singapore is also investing in a network of "green corridors," streets lined thickly with trees that also help to provide shade and moisture, naturally air conditioning the city. Some <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2019/06/03/health/green-roofs-singapore-buses-intl/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">public buses</a> have even adopted green roofs.Singapore is not the only place investing heavily in planting more greenery to reduce temperatures and boost energy efficiency. The city of Basel, Switzerland, has been incentivizing green roof construction since the 1990s, and as of 2019, it had <a href="https://climate-adapt.eea.europa.eu/en/metadata/case-studies/green-roofs-in-basel-switzerland-combining-mitigation-and-adaptation-measures-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more green roof space per capita</a> than any place on earth. Toronto <a href="https://www.canadianarchitect.com/canadian-precedent-spurs-green-roof-legislation-for-new-york-city/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed a law in 2009</a> requiring that buildings of a certain size have green roofs.

Why so many buildings in Singapore are covered in plants

By Debashish Biswas India’s urban population is expected to grow from 377 million in 2011 (31% of total population) to around 600 million or 42% of the total population in 2030. It is estimated that in 2030, for five states – <keyword id="20154" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu" source="Orion">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Punjab, urbanisation levels will be more than 50% (Sources: Census of India 2011, McKinsey Global Institute and <keyword id="13071722" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN-World-Urbanisation-Prospects-2018" source="Orion">UN World Urbanisation Prospects 2018</keyword>). Indian cities will act as the engines of growth for the economy. As highlighted in the National Infrastructure Pipeline, an estimated ₹19,19,267 crores capital expenditure is estimated between FY20-FY25 in <keyword id="557969" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="urban-infrastructure" source="Orion">urban infrastructure</keyword> (Source: National Infrastructure Pipeline, Volume 1). Around 21% of this capital expenditure is proposed to be funded through private sector participation. Given this, as part of Budget 2022-23, it is expected that urban sector development will continue to remain as one of the major focus areas. Budgetary allocations are expected to be made for: <ul><li>Strengthening core urban infrastructure – Continued investments to reinforce core urban infrastructure like water supply, solid waste management, urban mobility, among others. Recently, in October 2021, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs announced AMRUT 2.0 which focuses on enhancing water connections in around 4800 urban local bodies, sewerage/ septage services in 500 cities as well as rejuvenation of water bodies, green spaces and parks (Source: AMRUT 2.0 guidelines). Further, <keyword id="6735318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swachh-bharat-mission-urban" source="Orion">Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban</keyword> 2.0 was also announced in October 2021 with the aspiration of making all cities garbage free.</li><li>Housing to remain a key focus area – Housing, specially providing affordable housing for all, remains a key priority for the country. It is also important to provide necessary incentives and improve various regulatory processes to attract private investments in the housing sector, especially in affordable housing.</li><li>Developing smart digital infrastructure in terms of mobility management, digital service delivery, city management, safety and security, environmental management, etc. <keyword id="857936" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emphasis" source="Orion">Emphasis</keyword> may be provided on creating specific digital urban solutions leveraging the data being captured at the city level, specifically in the smart cities where the command control centers are already operational. Also, focus may be provided in creating cloud based shared digital infrastructure at state as well as district level so that even the smaller urban local bodies may get access and leverage digital infrastructure. </li><li>Environment and sustainability focus: Given the focus of building environmentally friendly and resilient cities, the budget may provide specific emphasis on developing sustainable urban areas including increasing green cover, urban forest, water conservation, water recycling, waste reuse, renewable energy usage, energy conservation, etc. On the mobility front, focus may be provided on further developing non-motorized transportation and electric vehicle infrastructure. For facilitating developing environmentally friendly infrastructure, necessary policies and incentives may be considered. Funding available under CSR activities may be leveraged for implementing various environmentally friendly infrastructure at city level.</li><li>Continue municipal reforms: To enable urban infrastructure growth, the ongoing municipal reforms should continue. These include -- a) strengthening municipal bond market – key steps to be undertaken by the urban local bodies are improving financial discipline; accounting reforms; improved governance and augment own source revenues; b) asset monetization and attracting private sector – creating an environment for attracting more private investments; and c) enabling user charges for funding urban infrastructure. Additional incentives may be provided to urban local bodies which undertake such overall reforms proactively. </li></ul>Overall, like last year, the current pandemic calls for a public investment led push for enabling economic growth. The FY 22-23 budget needs to focus on increased spending in overall urban infrastructure &amp; capital assets, which are likely to have a multiplier effect on demand generation and gross domestic product (GDP) growth. Further, higher urban infrastructure spend will improve investment attractiveness, create more employment opportunities and enhance quality of life. In the early 1990s, one of her clients who owned an abattoir (or slaughterhouse) would give the family a roast every month, even though he had no idea the family couldn't afford to buy one themselves."He gave us this huge roast once a month for the three of [my kids]," she said in 2015. Maye Musk said she helped her sons with everything from the company's business plan to supervising interns and taking care of printing and office expenses. She also bought them food, clothes, and furniture at the time.Some time around 1996, Maye Musk donated all of her savings, which amounted to $10,000, to cover the office rental and expenses.She calls it her "best investment ever."Maye Musk was even up until 2 a.m. with Kimbal Musk at Kinko's helping him print out colored copies of Zip2's presentations to investors. "That night we were exhausted and exhilarated," she said in 2015. "We went to the best restaurant in Palo Alto, and I told them this was the last time I would use my credit card for our dinners. And that has been true."By 1997 and 1998, Zip2 began to really take off, and both Elon Musk and Kimbal Musk became busier with board meetings. Maye Musk was asked to meet with the company every week while running her practice and juggling modeling gigs. "I would rent a car every Friday night, do the Nordstrom fashion shows on Saturday morning at 8:30 am in San Francisco, San Jose, or Sacramento, and then drive to their office for our weekly business meeting," she said in 2015. <h2>Her children made — and kept — an ambitious promise</h2>Maye Musk eventually moved to San Francisco for two-and-a-half years to be closer to her children and the business, before moving to New York in 1999. Back when the brothers and <keyword id="13876085" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="tosca-musk" source="Orion">Tosca Musk</keyword> were all working at Zip2, before the company sold, they couldn't afford to buy a big gift for their mother's 50th birthday.Instead, they made her a promise."They gave me a little toy house and a little toy car the size of a matchbox and said, 'One day we'll buy you the real thing,'" she said.Zip2 eventually sold to Compaq Computer for around $300 million, and the Musk children kept their word.Since, Maye Musk has been an outspoken supporter of Elon Musk on social media. She's promoted her son's work at Twitter, and she's also never been afraid to go to bat for her kids. It's all an effort to generate the kind of attention we might normally reserve for tornadoes and hurricanes.It's attention that's deserved: The dangers from extreme heat can bubble over in minutes or across several days. Those at higher risk include <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/updates/upd-07-02-18.html#:~:text=Working%20outside%20can%20produce%20heat,up%20safety%20glasses%2C%20and%20dizziness." target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">people who work outdoors</a>, those who <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/cowboys/2022/07/11/marion-barber-cause-death-dallas-cowboys-running-back-heat-stroke/10033698002/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">exercise under extreme conditions</a>, older people, and those who are poor.The most serious harms from heat waves are often <a href="https://www.epa.gov/climate-indicators/climate-change-indicators-heat-waves" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">linked to higher overnight temperatures</a>. That's because when it's harder for people to find respite from daytime extremes, their bodies have to work overtime to shed heat.This is part of why heat has, in some years, killed more people in the US than <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r2/recreation/safety-ethics/?cid=FSEPRD494289" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and lightning combined</a>. <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/heatrelated-illnesses-heat-cramps-heat-exhaustion-heat-stroke" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Heat-related illnesses include</a> heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and <keyword id="12473634" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="heat-stroke" source="Orion">heat stroke</keyword>. Hot weather can also <a href="https://www.geisinger.org/health-and-wellness/wellness-articles/2017/04/30/22/01/summertime-heat-can-be-hard-on-your-lungs" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">inhibit breathing</a> and <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/heat-is-hard-on-the-heart-simple-precautions-can-ease-the-strain-201107223180" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">put those with heart conditions at risk</a>.When Jane Gilbert became the <a href="https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/chief-heat-officers" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">first chief heat officer</a> for Miami-Dade County last year, she commissioned studies to understand who in the region was most vulnerable. The efforts found that areas with the highest land-surface temperatures saw greater instances of emergency-department visits for heat-related illnesses.Sections of the county with a dearth of <keyword id="6355381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trees" source="Orion">trees</keyword> tended to be hotter — and poorer. Gilbert said areas with higher incomes, by contrast, often had more prolific tree cover. "They almost look like the same map," she said, referring to the overlap between wealth and arboreal plenty.To narrow the tree gap, Miami-Dade County is working to boost its tree canopy from about 20% to 30% by 2032. Part of the effort will target areas with less greenery.The county <a href="https://www.miamidade.gov/global/service.page?Mduid_service=ser1467835324112359" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">gives away two trees a year</a> to homeowners who want to help in the <a href="https://www8.miamidade.gov/global/recreation/milliontrees/home.page" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">green-up plan</a>. The program includes instructions for planting and care. Still, not all of the young trees will thrive. Progress in boosting Miami-Dade County's tree coverage <a href="https://www.wlrn.org/news/2021-11-16/miami-dade-county-florida-extreme-heat-season-cop26-tree-canopy" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">has proven difficult</a> because some trees, new and old, are damaged in storms or are lost when land is cleared for development. Yet drawing in everyday citizens to the effort is essential, Gilbert said, because the county can't otherwise reach its goal."We only own a very small portion of the land. And if we're going to get to 30% tree canopy, we need private-sector involvement in that. We're never going to get there without all partners." Miami-Dade County gives away about 2,000 trees at each of its adopt-a-tree events and, since 2001, has handed out more than 215,000 of them.Taking steps to cool so-called <a href="https://scied.ucar.edu/learning-zone/climate-change-impacts/urban-heat-islands" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">urban heat islands</a> is wise because we'll likely face more hot days.Noboru Nakamura, a professor in the department of geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago, <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2021GL097699" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">identified unusual behavior in the jet stream</a> that facilitated last summer's historic <keyword id="11947988" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="heat-wave" source="Orion">heat wave</keyword> in the Pacific Northwest in which more than 1,000 people died in the US and Canada. The phenomenon is called atmospheric blocking, and it involves the jet stream stalling over a region."When this happens, weather stops changing regularly," Nakamura said. It cost an estimated 138 million Singapore dollars ($100 million) to build the hotel.The architects selected the red aluminum mesh base because they wanted to create a strong contrast against the greenery and the blue sky, per the factsheet. The mesh extends above the top of building, creating a crown roof that gives the plants an extra 140 feet to grow. Oasia Hotel Downtown has a green plot ratio of 1,100%, meaning the plants on the building can cover more than 10 times the amount greenery lost as a result of the hotel's construction, per the factsheet. 10 Things in Politics: Marjorie Taylor Greene, the GOP cash queen

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has outlined his 10 climate pledges for a <keyword id="5142998" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Green-Industrial-Revolution">green industrial revolution</keyword> for 2,50,000 jobs and ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030. Covering clean energy, transport, nature and innovative technologies, the Prime Minister's blueprint launched on Tuesday will allow the UK to forge ahead with eradicating its contribution to climate change by 2050, particularly crucial in the run up to the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow next year. The plan -- which is part of the PM's mission to level up across the country -- will mobilise £12 billion of government investment to create and support up to 2,50,000 highly-skilled green jobs in the UK, and spur over three times as much private sector investment by 2030. At the centre of his blueprint are the UK's industrial heartlands, including in the North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, West Midlands, Scotland and Wales, which will drive forward the green industrial revolution and build green jobs and industries of the future. The Prime Minister's ten points, which are built around the UK's strengths, are: Offshore wind: Producing enough offshore wind to power every home, quadrupling how much it produces to 40GW by 2030, supporting up to 60,000 jobs. Hydrogen: Working with industry aiming to generate 5GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030 for industry, transport, power and homes, and aiming to develop the first town heated entirely by hydrogen by the end of the decade. Nuclear: Advancing nuclear as a clean energy source, across large scale nuclear and developing the next generation of small and advanced reactors, which could support 10,000 jobs. Electric vehicles: Backing world-leading car manufacturing bases, including in the West Midlands, North East and North Wales, to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, and transforming the national infrastructure to better support electric vehicles. Public transport, cycling and walking: Making cycling and walking more attractive ways to travel and investing in zero-emission public transport of the future. Jet Zero and greener maritime: Supporting difficult-to-decarbonise industries to become greener through research projects for zero-emission planes and ships. Homes and public buildings: Making homes, schools and hospitals greener, warmer and more energy efficient, whilst creating 50,000 jobs by 2030, and a target to install 6,00,000 heat pumps every year by 2028. Carbon capture: Becoming a world-leader in technology to capture and store harmful emissions away from the atmosphere, with a target to remove 10MT of carbon dioxide by 2030, equivalent to all emissions of the industrial Humber today. Nature: Protecting and restoring natural environment, planting 30,000 hectares of trees every year, whilst creating and retaining thousands of jobs. Innovation and finance: Developing the cutting-edge technologies needed to reach these new energy ambitions and make the City of London the global centre of green finance. The UK Prime Minister said: "Although this year has taken a very different path to the one we expected, I haven't lost sight of our ambitious plans to level up across the country. "My ten point plan will create, support and protect hundreds of thousands of green jobs, whilst making strides towards net zero by 2050. "Our green industrial revolution will be powered by the wind turbines of Scotland and the North East, propelled by the electric vehicles made in the Midlands and advanced by the latest technologies developed in Wales, so we can look ahead to a more prosperous, greener future." Following extensive consultation with car manufacturers and sellers, the Prime Minister has confirmed that the UK will end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, 10 years earlier than planned. However, it will allow the sale of hybrid cars and vans that can drive a significant distance with no carbon coming out of the tailpipe until 2035. The UK car industry already manufactures a significant proportion of electric vehicles in Europe, including one of the most popular models in the world. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Super73 is a California-based company that's been building good-looking, retro-styled <keyword id="662112" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-bikes">electric bikes</keyword> since 2016. </li><li>I put the company's S1 model through its paces to see how good the bike is for getting around New York as the city starts to open up.</li><li>The quick, sturdy, and fun e-bike took me far away from my apartment and put a huge smile on my face in the process. </li></ul>As New York creaks open for business, I — like many living in densely packed <keyword id="6399501" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="cities">cities</keyword> — have been wrestling with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/public-transit-in-cities-after-covid-19-lockdowns-traffic-cars-2020-6">how to get around safely</a> over the coming weeks, months, and possibly years until a coronavirus vaccine hits the market. Restaurants, barbershops, beaches, and offices are reopening, but the challenge of how to travel to those places without excessive human interaction remains.Walking only gets you so far, close-quarters public transit isn't exactly welcoming, and, like <a href="https://edc.nyc/article/new-yorkers-and-their-cars">most</a> of New York City's more than 8 million residents, I don't own a car.But as one dainty green e-bike showed me, you don't need doors, windows, or four wheels to get around in an age where nobody wants to travel in close proximity.<div type="image" title="super73 profile 3" height="1663" width="2500" msid="76752607" hostid="261"></div>Regular cycling is a great way to get around lots of cities, but it, too, has its drawbacks. While you can cover a lot of ground on a bike, there are only so many miles an average rider can pedal in a given day. Not to mention, some of us prefer not to show up to gatherings — even socially distanced ones — drenched in sweat. Itching to get far away from my cramped apartment and unsure of when I'd venture back to the subway, I had a feeling that an electric bike might be the ultimate form of socially distant <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">transportation</keyword> over the coming months and beyond. It would give me all of the convenience of a normal bike, plus some pedal assistance should the need arise. Super73, an e-bike manufacturer out of California, sent me one of its S1 models so I could put that theory to the test.<div type="image" title="Super73 headlight" height="1667" width="2500" msid="76752609" hostid="261"></div>The S1 is part of Super73's mid-range S Series, slotting between the company's entry-level Z Series and its sportier R lineup. It retails for right around $2,000, claims a conservative top speed of 20 mph, and boasts an estimated range of somewhere between 30 and 50 miles depending on terrain, pedal-assist level, speed, and other variables. A few weeks back, I decided to take the bike on its maiden voyage — a cruise out to Manhattan's Central Park from my apartment in Queens. After what felt like years under lockdown, it was due time to calm my nerves, get some air, and take in scenery that wasn't within a 10-block radius of my building. I figured kicking back in New York's largest park would do the trick, and the Super73 S1 would get me there. <div type="image" title="Super73 drivetrain" height="1667" width="2500" msid="76752615" hostid="261"></div>After pulling out into the street for the first time, I took a few minutes to get used to this odd new machine. I got a feel for the S1's thumb throttle and its three different pedal-assist levels — basically, you can twist the throttle like on a motorcycle or start pedaling to engage the motor. Using a small handlebar-mounted display, you can choose between four drive modes: no pedal assist at all, an "eco" mode that provides a tiny bit of assistance, a "mid" level, and a "high" mode that will rocket you up to full speed only using the pedals.The throttle is always available and I used it for most of my riding, since the bike's low seat height makes pedaling in earnest damn near impossible — especially for taller riders. Anybody who considers themselves tall should probably spring for the optional extended seat, which provides a little extra legroom. <div type="image" title="Super73 handle" height="1667" width="2500" msid="76752617" hostid="261"></div>Although I've been biking around New York for years, I was a bit shaky at first on an e-bike. The combination of a touchy throttle and a powerful, 500-watt hub motor takes some getting used to, and I certainly wasn't immune to the learning curve.But as I whizzed my way westward toward the bridge that would take me into Manhattan, my confidence built along with my speed. Soon enough, I found myself pegging the bike at its unofficial 25-mph top speed for a few seconds here and there, still wary of going overboard — both figuratively and literally. A few sketchy run-ins with New York's famous potholes early on were enough to tell me that the S1 — despite its knobby tires and rugged looks — is best suited for smooth pavement. From then on, I tried my best to lift out of the saddle when the terrain got bumpy, and that seemed to do the trick. Its oversized, grippy tires did, however, inspire a ton of confidence when carving around corners at speed. <div type="image" title="Super73 seat rack" height="1667" width="2500" msid="76752620" hostid="261"></div>I suspected that the S1 would begin to show its true colors on the steep Queensboro Bridge, and it didn't disappoint. What would've been a sweaty slog on my normal bike was, unsurprisingly, a total breeze on the e-bike; the S1 easily whisked me up and over the bridge at 15 to 20 mph before dumping me out on Manhattan's First Avenue. That's where I got my first real taste of what e-biking is like on bustling city streets. I death-gripped my way uptown, dodging delivery bikes, pedestrians, and turning cars — all typical annoyances of biking in the Big Apple that felt even more dicey on the quick and new-to-me S1. Several somewhat chaotic blocks later, I turned off of First and onto a broad cross street, where I was finally able to wind the bike up full speed again. As I was breezing across East 72nd Street at what was probably a recklessly fast clip, I felt I finally got the Super73. I was having an absolute blast keeping up with cars — passing them, even — and I realized I hadn't thought much at all about the weighty global health crisis since setting off from Queens. Speeding through the streets was thrilling and mind-clearing; I had no choice but to focus fully on the task at hand, or risk wiping out.<div type="image" title="Super73 front wheel" height="1667" width="2500" msid="76752624" hostid="261"></div>Don't get me wrong — the S1 certainly has its flaws. The bike has no suspension, an unforgiving seat, and tricky geometry for taller riders, but its sketchiness only makes the ride more exciting. Plus, hydraulic disc brakes in front and rear provide more than enough stopping power for when things get hairy.Then, there's the novelty factor. That first afternoon on the Super73 S1 showed me just how exhilarating riding a quick, stylish, and sturdily built electric bike can be. As I continued to ride the bike over the following weeks, that initial thrill wore off a bit, but the fun never went away entirely.The Super73 proved to me how enjoyable and effective getting around New York can be on an electric bike, whether that be for long 20-mile journeys or quick jaunts around the neighborhood. And while the S1 is undeniably great for getting from A to B, it's equally fit for letting loose a bit and going no place in particular.<div type="image" title="Super73 battery" height="1667" width="2500" msid="76752627" hostid="261"></div>I made it to my destination during my maiden S1 voyage and sat for a few minutes in the park, scribbling down some notes about what the trip there was like. But I was itching to get back on the bike and ride, because for the first time in months, I had a much-needed distraction from the world around me. I set off on Central Park's main bike loop, intending to follow it for a couple minutes and then head back home.I zoomed up a path while further getting a feel for the S1, effortlessly passing plodding families and Spandex-clad semi-pros alike. I'm sure I got a few sneers from non-motorized cyclists, and on a different day, I probably would've been one of them. I must have gotten a bit carried away toggling the bike's settings and putting it through its paces — when I looked up some time later, I realized I had overshot my exit by more than a mile. But it was no matter. After close to 10 miles of hard riding, the S1 still had plenty of juice and I was more than happy to take the long way home.

It’s even better than chugging along the countryside in a train. You can stop any time you want – to sample some chatpati chaat and a steaming cuppa of chai at a roadside dhaba; to talk to people; to take a dekko at local interests or simply laze an hour or two in shine or rain with the greens around you and the fresh smell of soil floating in the air.

Infrastructure development in India has undergone a sea change over the past few years and the country currently boasts the <keyword id="2034191" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Second-largest-road-network">second largest road network</keyword> in the world, with a road length of over 4,689,842 km, as per 2013 data from the <keyword id="6404450" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Road-Transport-and-Highways">Ministry of Road Transport and Highways</keyword>. 
 Starting from FY2012-13, the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> will be also putting $17 billion over the next five years, being sourced through public-private partnership (<keyword id="6361580" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="PPP">PPP</keyword>) road projects. This will be used by the <keyword id="87432" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways-Authority-of-India">National Highways Authority of India</keyword> (<keyword id="49448" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="nhai">NHAI</keyword>) for the planned series of <keyword id="174913" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BOT">BOT</keyword> (build, operate and transfer) highways. In spite of several bottlenecks, the NHAI has set up impressive targets and aims to develop 20 km/day, in a bid to fast-track the country’s <keyword id="2034194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Road-network-expansion">road network expansion</keyword>. 
 As of July 2013, <keyword id="6373156" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="National-Highways">national highways</keyword> account for 79,116 km, connecting all major cities and state capitals. Expressways, however, differ a bit in the sense they are controlled-access highways like the <keyword id="610047" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="freeways">freeways</keyword> or <keyword id="1333990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="motorways">motorways</keyword> or autobahnen in the US and Europe, essentially designed for high-speed traffic. As of now, most of the expressways in India are 6-8 lane <keyword id="120837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="toll-roads">toll roads</keyword> and cover a total distance of nearly 1,208.19 km. India expects to add another 3,530 km of expressways by 2014 as projects under construction get completed. Another massive programme is also under way to expand the network and the Indian government plans to add an additional 18,637 km of expressways by 2022.

In North India That Fulfil Your Need For Speed

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image">Mary WetherillElectra Jarvis, a 27-year-old urban farming entrepreneur who is part of the Square Roots program in Brooklyn, New York.</div></div></div>Every year, the US Department of Agriculture devotes <a href="http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdahome?contentid=2016/10/0222.xml&amp;contentidonly=true">millions of dollars</a> to farmers in rural areas.The government is increasingly starting to offer assistance to urban farms, too.In 2016, the USDA funded a dozen urban farms, the highest number in history, Val Dolicini, the administrator for the USDA Farm Services Agency, tells Business Insider.In 2017, he expects the USDA to funnel even more money toward farms on rooftops, in greenhouses, and in warehouses.USDA Microloans, a program that offers funding up to $50,000, is specifically geared toward urban farmers. Established in 2013, the program has awarded 23,000 loans worth $518 million to farms in California, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Though it is open to all farmers, urban farmers often apply for it because it offers the money on a smaller scale than other programs. <a href="https://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usdamobile?contentid=usda-results-beginning-farmers.html">Seventy percent</a> (or about 16,100 of those loans) have gone to new farmers, many of them in cities."Urban farmers are not looking to form 10,000 acres in Missouri, but perhaps in an indoor container on a parking lot next to old factory," Dolcini says.In 2016, nine young farmers participating in a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kimbal-musk-vertical-farms-shipping-containers-2016-8">vertical farming accelerator program</a> called Square Roots, founded by entrepreneurs Kimbal Musk (Elon's brother) and Tobias Peggs, became the first urban farmers to receive microloans in New York.Farmers selected for Square Roots grow their crops inside climate-controlled, LED-lit shipping containers. The Square Roots farmers used their loans to cover the costs of seeds and operating expenses before their first harvests, Peggs says.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Sarah JacobsEntrepreneur Tobias Peggs outside Square Roots, a vertical farming startup accelerator in Brooklyn, New York.</div></div></div>Peggs and Musk worked with the USDA to streamline the 2016 microloan application, which will make it even easier for urban farmers to gain funding in the future.Dolcini says the agency wants to take advantage of people's experiences in other fields, or those who might be making an industry change (One of the Square Roots farmers used to be an accountant, and others are recent university graduates). The program also now allows grantees to use the loan for non-traditional farm equipment (think LEDs instead of tractors), which is beneficial for urban farmers.Earlier in 2016, the USDA also published an "<a href="https://www.usda.gov/documents/urban-agriculture-toolkit.pdf">Urban Agriculture Toolkit</a>," which includes advice about how to launch a greenhouse or rooftop farm, and how to apply for loans."The funding process made it impossible, or certainly extremely difficult, to complete if you were an urban farmer," Peggs says. "'Question 1: how big is your field?' is hard to answer if you don't have one."The majority of USDA grants and loans still go to rural farms, but the agency is making an active effort to give urban farmers equal opportunities. Dolcini says these efforts were highlighted under the Obama administration, with the launch of the <a href="https://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/knowyourfarmer?navid=kyf-kyf">Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food campaign</a> in 2009. It's easier to meet your farmer, he adds, when they grow in your own city."We've done a lot of work in the Obama administration to open doors wider to urban farmers," Dolcini says. "The Square Roots farmers represent the tip of the iceberg into our foray into regional foods and giving folks greater access to the USDA who previously haven't had access."Though Dolcini is leaving his position in January, he is optimistic that the USDA will still support urban farming under the Trump administration."We have demonstrated to the nation that our investments in microloans and conservation grants have really paid off, and we have made business case for them," he says. "It will be hard to un-do the success we've had." Agriculture was not a significant part of Trump's platform. But his <a href="https://www.donaldjtrump.com/press-releases/trump-campaign-announces-agricultural-advisory-committee">agricultural advisors</a> and <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/us/politics/donald-trump-administration.html">potential picks for the Secretary of Agriculture</a> may hint at what his presidency could mean for the future of urban farming. A number have emphasized rural farming in their work. Some have also have <a href="http://modernfarmer.com/2016/09/2016-election-candidates-food-farming/">advocated</a> for industrial farming, a process in which food is produced on a huge scale in rural areas.The USDA currently has 2,200 offices, the majority of which are located in rural states, like Missouri, Iowa, and Texas. In winter 2016, Dolcini says the USDA hired NYC's first urban agriculture specialist, who will coordinate farm efforts in Brooklyn.These initiatives underscore a growing movement within the USDA to support local food systems and look beyond rural agriculture."The global population is expected to be 9 billion by 2050. We really need to pull every farm into finding solutions for that - not just folks out in the Midwest who grow the lion's share of food but also those in urban agriculture," he says.Though the modern local agriculture movement sprouted up in the late '90s, it has grown rapidly in cities in recent years. Today, urban farmers are not just growing a few tomatoes on rooftops, they're moving toward commercial production.In 2016, the world's largest vertical farm, Aerofarms, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/inside-aerofarms-the-worlds-largest-vertical-farm-2016-3">launched</a> inside a 70,000-square-foot warehouse in Newark, New Jersey. The US government is loaning millions of dollars to jumpstart urban farming

It was <a href="http://news.sky.com/story/1625874/citymapper-charts-path-to-unicorn-status" target="_blank">first hinted at by Sky News</a> on Monday.Instead of the standard press release, the London-based startup announced the funding round in a <a href="https://medium.com/@Citymapper/getting-from-a-to-series-b-883393164276#.2b6hfq4yg" target="_blank">quirky Medium post</a> where it joked that its investors had promised to "only take buses from now on." In the 11-point post, Citymapper said it will use the funding to refine the Citymapper app, help it expand into more cities, build out its team, and launch new products. It also said that it's developing Citymapper's API/Widgets so that other app developers can use them to power their own websites and applications.Founded in 2011 by Pakistani-born ex-Googler Azmat Yusuf, Citymapper began life as an app exclusively for Londoners. The app has since expanded to cover over 30 cities - including Madrid, Sao Paulo and San Francisco - but Yusuf doesn't plan to stop there."It's not just about London, NYC and Paris anymore. The next set of challenges involve the massive emerging market cities where the infrastructure is limited, rules of transit are different, data is sparse, and even the consumer approach to smartphones and apps is not the same," the Medium post reads. "But this is also where some of our most rewarding work is being done."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Citymapper</div></div></div>The company added that it's going on a huge recruitment spree, stating that it wants to hire people in "every significant metro city in the world."Citymapper's algorithm pulls in vast amounts of data to present users with a range of transport options, including bus, train, metro and Uber. The results are presents through a sleek-looking green app that also displays information such as journey times and prices.Londoners and other urban dwellers have embraced Citymapper for its simplicity and its comedy value. The app, for instance, shows users how long it would take them to get from A to B using a jetpack or how many doughnuts they would burn off if they walked instead of taking the bus.Citymapper has been quiet with regards to user numbers but the app often features towards the top of the transportation app download charts for both iOS and Android.Balderton Capital, one of Citymapper's former investors, was absent from the latest funding round. Bernard Liautaud, general partner at Balderton said: "Citymapper is an exceptional company with great potential, and we're thrilled with the progress the business has made. We are proud to have led the previous round in 2014, and remain active, engaged investors."Citymapper finished its blog post saying it's not a unicorn, which is the term given to a company worth over a billion dollars.
