<ul class="summary-list"><li>Maven's chief financial officer has left the women's health unicorn one year after taking the role.</li><li>The startup plans to bring in a new CFO with public market experience, per a source with knowledge.</li></ul>Maven Clinic is swapping out its chief financial officers on the heels of a fresh funding round as the women's health startup inches closer to an IPO.Maven is bringing in a new finance head with experience leading a public company, according to a source with direct knowledge of the change.Kristina Campbell, Maven's former CFO, left the startup in October, according to her LinkedIn. She joined Maven a year prior, in October 2023.Earlier this month, Maven notched a $1.7 billion valuation with $125 million in new funding from the private equity firm StepStone Group. Business Insider <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/womens-health-unicorn-maven-clinic-raising-new-funding-stepstone-2024-9">first reported</a> the round in September.The identity of Maven's incoming CFO isn't known. Maven declined to comment for this story. Campbell didn't respond to requests for comment.Maven launched 10 years ago to provide virtual care to women and families through employers and health plans, including for fertility, pregnancy, and menopause. It's since raised over $425 million from investors such as Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst, Lux Capital, and Oak HC/FT.As the highest-valued women's health startup, Maven is expected to be <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/maven-ipo-chrissy-farr-womens-health-startup-prediction-2023-12">a candidate for the next wave of digital health IPOs</a>. The startup's hopeful future exit would be a boon for the women's health market, which remains a small fraction of all healthcare funding.Some of Maven's peers haven't fared as well in a tighter venture market. Fertility startup Kindbody is reportedly looking to raise more funding at a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-08-21/fertility-startup-kindbody-set-to-cut-valuation-letter-shows">$600 million</a> valuation, a massive markdown from the <a target="_blank" href="https://kindbody.com/kindbody-announces-100-million-in-new-funding-to-further-accelerate-growth/">$1.8 billion</a> valuation it landed in March 2023.Before Maven, Campbell spent over two years as the CFO of the cryptocurrency exchange Ripple. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The University of California, Berkeley, is the top producer of alumni starting tech companies.</li><li>Founded by Jeremy Fiance, The House Fund targets Berkeley-affiliated startups like Databricks.</li></ul>In the last year, tech investors have plowed tens of millions of dollars into Perplexity, the developer of a search engine built from scratch with artificial intelligence. The two-year-old startup <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/perplexity-raising-new-funding-generative-ai-2024">takes in cash like oxygen,</a> having raised <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-startups-rapid-funding-rounds-2024-9">back-to-back funding rounds</a> just months apart, and is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-startup-perplexity-in-funding-talks-to-more-than-double-valuation-to-8-billion-54d36787">said to be in talks</a> to raise a fourth round that would value the startup at $8 billion.Landing a spot on Perplexity's cap table is fiercely competitive, making it all the more noteworthy that The House Fund, a bespoke venture capital firm born from the University of California, Berkeley's ecosystem, secured a place.In 2016, tech investor Jeremy Fiance set up a venture capital firm at his alma mater to invest in startups with ties to top-tier public schools. From an office across from the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society, investors at The House Fund scour their networks for students, faculty, and alumni working to build the next Perplexity, whose CEO Aravind Srinivas is a Berkeley alum, or Databricks, one of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/databricks-acquires-startup-lilac-ai-to-beef-up-its-llm-offerings-2024-3">world's most important data science firms</a> with a private valuation of $43 billion, started by a group of seven Berkeley researchers. The House Fund has backed both."There are only so many companies that matter every year, full stop, in venture," said Zachary Hargreaves, a managing partner at The House Fund. During this period, an old classmate from Berkeley, Fiance, started asking his advice about which companies in the portfolio he should reinvest in."I was learning more and more about what The House Fund is from the outside in," Hargreaves said. "It feels very small but then from the inside out, it's actually very big in terms of the opportunity set."In the two years since Hargreaves went full-time, The House Fund has deployed over $125 million into companies. His move from Founders Fund to The House Fund hasn't been previously reported.Investors pay much attention to Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for their conveyor belts of entrepreneurial talent. Neither have spawned quite as many startup founders in the last decade at Berkeley. According to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://pitchbook.com/news/articles/pitchbook-university-rankings">PitchBook data</a>, Berkeley has the highest tally of alumni entrepreneurs who have raised venture capital of any public or private school worldwide.Hargreaves predicts that the group will grow as the use of artificial intelligence makes it cheaper and faster for students and alumni to spin up new businesses. "You can actually be three kids in a garage and launch pretty fierce products," he said.With Hargreaves on board, Fiance hopes to invest later in companies it previously backed. His hiring gives the firm the resources and knowledge to help founders shape their businesses into the next generation of Berkeley-born unicorns, as well as diligence them for potential follow-on financing. The House Fund said it can write checks up to $10 million.The House Fund has raised over $330 million from backers, including the Berkeley Endowment Management Company, UC Investments (the office that manages the working capital, retirement savings, and endowment funds for the University of California system), and Ahoy Capital, a boutique fund manager.Hargreaves put the firm's value add this way: "If we are on your cap table, we are a shortcut to anything Berkeley."

And former President Donald Trump recently called for a similar state-owned investment fund to finance "great national endeavors" during a campaign stop at the Economic Club of New York.It is unclear how an American fund would be funded or how it would operate. However, lawmakers might have something of a model in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alaska-permanent-fund-basic-income">The Alaska Permanent Fund</a>, which distributes the money it makes to the state's residents as annual dividends."The fund was initially established with revenue from mineral extraction, primarily oil, but within a few years after its initiation, its primary source of revenue is investment returns," Sarah Cowan, executive director of the Cash Transfer Lab, previously told Business Insider. "It diversifies the Alaskan economy because, at this juncture, the revenue from this fund primarily does not come from oil."Alaska's fund offers benefits that mimic a universal basic income — a no-strings-attached, recurring payment distributed to people regardless of socioeconomic status. But there are some key differences. For one, the dividend doesn't come out of taxes; it's paid only annually and doesn't equate to a livable wage.Federal lawmakers likely see a sovereign wealth fund serving a different purpose, like supporting industries or financing supply chain initiatives. Creating one at the national level also comes with more legislative hurdles."Typically, many countries went through special law making to create a SWF, defining the SWF's source of capital, investment mandate, and supervision system," Winston Ma, an adjunct professor at NYU and the author of The Hunt for Unicorns: How Sovereign Funds Are Reshaping Investment in the Digital Economy, wrote to Business Insider by email. "Therefore, it's not a simple corporate setup. It will involve lots of collaborative work between the executive and legislative branches — after the election."Sovereign wealth funds — like Alaska's or Norway's Government Pension Fund Global, which is the largest in the world — are often funded by wealth generated from state-owned natural resources. The issue is that "natural resources in the US are mostly owned by the states," Ma said. So, consolidating those revenue streams might require some back and forth.

The US is considering a sovereign wealth fund. Alaska already has one, and it's funding a universal basic income.

Almost one in five of India’s future unicorns drop off the race as funding winter bites

Total funding raised by <keyword id="17404081" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mom-and-baby-care-startups" source="Orion">mom and baby care startups</keyword> and companies was $418 million in 2022, a plunge of 80 per cent from $2.1 billion in 2021, a report has shown. <keyword id="17404082" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mom-Baby-Care-companies" source="Orion">Mom &amp; Baby Care companies</keyword> in the US have raised $5 billion till date, while those in China and India raised $2.8 billion and $1.4 billion, respectively, according to Tracxn, a leading global SaaS-based market intelligence platform. The drop in funding is majorly due to the absence of late-stage investments. Seed-stage funding in Q1 2023 fell 21 per cent as against Q1 2022 but jumped 444 per cent from Q4 2022. Early-stage investments in the first quarter of 2023 rose 158 per cent when compared with Q4 2022, but dropped 64 per cent from Q1 2022, the report noted. The sector attracted investments worth $21 million in Q1 2023, compared with $3.86 million in Q4 2022 and $26.5 million in Q1 2022. "The space is seeing minimal or no activity in terms of unicorns and IPOs. In 2022 and 2023 till date, no new unicorn companies were created in this space," the report mentioned. No IPOs have taken place in 2023 so far, while 2022 witnessed one company and 2021 witnessed two companies going public. In terms of funding, <keyword id="17404084" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gamified-learning-platforms" source="Orion">Gamified learning platforms</keyword> for Pre-K children is the top-funded business model in the last two years in this space, followed by Online Retailers and Breast Pumps. 500 Global, Techstars and New Enterprise Associates are the most active investors in this space till date. IPV, Angel List and Techstars are the top seed-stage investors and Innoven Capital, Andreessen Horowitz and Sequoia Capital are the top early-stage investors, while Sequoia Capital, General Atlantic and IPGL are the top late-stage investors in the last two years. The pandemic accelerated the growth of the Mom &amp; Baby Care space, giving rise to innovation in this segment. The rise in the working class population with a higher disposable income, is also a supporting factor for growth in this space, said the Tracxn report. Funding into mom & baby care companies plunges 80%, no new unicorns

EV-as-a-service platform <keyword id="19895200" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="zypp-electric" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="zypp electric" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="zypp electric">Zypp Electric</keyword> on Monday said it has raised USD 15-million <keyword id="19913964" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="funding" source="keywords">funding</keyword> from <keyword id="21822063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="japanese-firm" source="keywords">Japanese firm</keyword> ENEOS. The series C funding comprises USD 15-million in <keyword id="21822065" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="equity-closure" source="keywords">equity closure</keyword>, as part of its ongoing USD 50-million round, which comprises USD 40-million in equity and USD 10-million in debt, the company said in a statement. The fresh capital raised under Series C, in which other investors existing investors 9unicorns, IAN fund, venture catalysts, WFC and others also participated, will be utilised to expand Zypp's fleet from 21,000 to 2-lakh electric scooters and extend its services to 15 cities across India by 2026, it added. The fresh investment will help Zypp in the last-mile delivery space with sustainable EV solutions, said Akash Gupta, Co-founder and CEO of Zypp Electric. "We are eager to expand our fleet and enhance our tech platform, driving significant growth across India. These funds will be utilised to drive the company towards the full path of growth along with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) profitability," he added. Further, Zypp Electric said it has forayed into the three-wheeler cargo business and claims of soon crossing 1,000 electric L5 loaders in its EV fleet and added that the company is set to cater to a wider range of business needs while maximising revenue streams, among others. According to Zypp Electric, it clocked Rs 325-crore revenue in FY 2023-24 and launched operations in Mumbai and Hyderabad recently. "In India, the last-mile delivery market is skyrocketing especially within urban areas. Zypp is operating its business as a pioneer in the EV motorcycle delivery market with competitiveness and this is the reason why we made the decision to invest," ENEOS was quoted as saying in the statement.
