After a report claimed that edtech major <keyword id="6630114" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="unacademy" source="Orion">Unacademy</keyword> has laid off employees from its job hiring platform <keyword id="12215842" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="relevel" source="Orion">Relevel</keyword>, the company's Founder and CEO <keyword id="1727930" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="gaurav-munjal" source="Orion">Gaurav Munjal</keyword> said on Wednesday that there were no layoffs. "No layoffs. We have moved some team members to other Businesses of the Group though. Team worked really really hard to ensure that we find a role for everyone," <keyword id="6320" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="munjal" source="Orion">Munjal</keyword> tweeted. A user replied: "That's nice Gaurav. Nice to read this. Compassion towards employees and fitting them in other divisions". MoneyControl first reported that Relevel "halved its team to 700 employees" amid the economic meltdown. Relevel was launched in 2021 by <keyword id="3886063" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shashank-murali" source="Orion">Shashank Murali</keyword>, Saksham Keshri and Prakash Kumar, on the back of strong traction witnessed in user growth, hiring company partnerships, and placement rate. Last year, Relevel raised $20 million from its parent edtech company Unacademy. In April, Unacademy laid off nearly 600 employees, contractual workers and educators, about 10 per cent of its 6,000-strong workforce across the group. As the funding winter hit edtech startups and unicorns in India, Unacademy founders and management took pay cuts. In an internal email last month, Munjal said that even though the company has more than Rs 2,800 crore in the bank, "we are not efficient at all". "We spend crores on travel for employees and educators. Sometimes it's needed, sometimes it's not. "There are a lot of unnecessary expenses that we do. We must cut all these expenses. We have a strong core business. We must turn profitable asap," the email read. "We will be shutting down certain businesses that have failed to find the product market fit (PMF) like the <keyword id="14425744" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="global-test-prep" source="Orion">Global Test Prep</keyword>," he told the employees. Unacademy last month said that a small fraction of its workforce (2.6 per cent) has been asked to go as part of a performance improvement programme (PIP). And that constitutes only the permanent job roles. Another 90,000 job openings are for contractual roles in the edtech sector. Simplilearn now has over 100 job openings for permanent roles and 500 vacancies for specialised or gig roles. “At Simplilearn, we witnessed a 30% jump in enrollments between March and April, 2020. While hiring was always part of the plan, the current phase has also triggered the need for more manpower to cater to this rising demand,” Kumar told Business Insider. However, as far as appraisals are concerned, Kumar said that the company is in a ‘wait and watch’ mode. “But all bonuses and variables are paid as per plan,” he added. Masai School is also planning to add nearly 20 people by the end of June. This includes Lead instructors, curriculum leads, technical mentors, marketing manager, admissions counselor and subject matter experts. “In addition to this, we have also rolled out appraisals to the existing team, for the year,” said Prateek Shukla, CEO &amp; Co-founder of Masai School. The demand for educators increase as the learner base grows Whitehat Jr, on the other hand, is doubling the number of employees and teachers to meet the 100% month-on-month increase in student enrollments. Unacademy too, plans to onboard over 500 educators over the next one year while it is also focussing on recruiting across teams such as sales, operations, confirmed Tina Balachandran, VP, HR at Unacademy. The edtech companies attribute the rise in jobs to the increased demand for online learning. “Due to the increased demand for online learning, we are definitely ramping up our backend and technology and have plans to hire 1500 employees across all levels and with domain expertise in the field of technology, product, finance, strategy &amp; HR,” said Vamsi Krishna, CEO &amp; Co-founder of Vedantu. The platform says that its revenue grew by over 80% with the students spending an average of 18-20 minutes per live class daily. Gradeup also witnessed nearly 25% surge in daily enrollments, especially live classes for JEE &amp; NEET aspirants. “With Covid 19 and the lockdown due to increase in demand, our requirements in academic positions have specifically gone up. At the same time we are also scaling up on the sales team to cater to the demand of online classes which were provided by offline institutes in the past. For the next quarter, we will hire technology, product and sales professionals. We have been hiring 30-40 people for these categories since May,” Shobhit Bhatnagar, CEO and Founder of Gradeup told Business Insider. Byju's, Unacademy, upGrad and other edtech companies hiring now

<ul><li>Earnings season will begin next week with the results of major IT companies -- TCS on April 11 and Infosys on April 13.</li><li>Digital transformation deals continue to boost IT sector’s growth along with rupee depreciation in the recent months benefiting the sector.</li><li>However, profit margins of these companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring.</li></ul>The March quarter earnings season will begin next week with the results of major information technology (IT) companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on April 11 and Infosys on April 13. Most analysts believe March is a seasonally weak quarter for IT companies and they expect moderate earnings growth amid margin pressures. The profit margins of IT companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring. “Sequential growth for Indian IT will be moderate in March 2022 quarter and in line with historical seasonal trends. Margins will remain under pressure resulting from elevated wage increases, onsite as well as offshore,” said Kotak Institutional Equities. The entire IT sector is struggling to retain employees including top five companies. Higher employee cost and shortage of skilled talent will remain the key challenges in the short term for IT companies. Billore — a son of a farmer — founded MBA Chai Wala as ‘Mr Billore Ahmedabad’ in 2017 after three consecutive failed attempts at CAT examinations. He wanted to get an MBA college and work at a multinational corporation, but instead he opened a small ‘thela’ cart outside his dream college IIM Ahmedabad. “Under my father’s pressure, I also took admission in a local college but I dropped out in 12 days. My father got really upset. But I wanted to create my own identity,” Billore noted. His brother Vivek Billore also joined MBA Chai Wala as a cofounder in 2020. The company has expanded to 100 cities like Bhopal, Srinagar, Surat, Delhi and more — since 2021. It now plans to double that number this year. It is currently opening 10-15 franchise stores on a monthly basis in an attempt to achieve these targets. Each of these stores are operated under the brand name MBA Chai Wala but will be financially managed by a franchise partner, who also handle all the investments that go into the outlet. The company charges ₹20 lakh on an annual basis to sell its franchises. Billore claims that the original MBA Chai Wala outlet in Ahmedabad earns up to ₹17 lakh a month. Meanwhile, an average MBA Chai Wala outlet employs seven employees and a smaller outlet provides employment opportunities to roughly five people. Based on this, the company will be generating employment for at least 500 people through its next 100 stores. MBA Chai Wala has been focusing on expansion in Northern India so far but it will now also look to expand in the southern part of the country, Praful Billore told Business Insider India. He noted that they will launch stores in Chennai, Bengaluru, Belgaum, Goa, Tirupati and more. “We used to get inquiry [for franchise] earlier too, but we scaled our business, built a name first and then started the franchise model,” Billore added. The company plans to expand his business across all 1,900 pin codes and 4000 cities in India with a goal to grow worldwide. They also plan to start their own tea-leaf brand. It will be hiring across tech, product and marketing teams. “The ongoing hiring is a part of our company's expansion plan, in India and abroad, as we look to substantially invest in our workforce by the end of 2022," said Krishna Kumar, founder and CEO of Simplilearn. It claims that 20% of its hiring or 160 employees would be freshers and college graduates. In the coming months, it will also be recruiting a CXO, vice president, and a senior vice president both for India and the US. In the US, it aims to appoint various C-suite level executives who will assist in strengthening and structuring the team present in the country. Kumar believes that the demand for upskilling and reskilling will prevail in the industry. “Over the past couple of years, the shift to online training and education led to a growth spurt in the number of providers in the industry. The industry is currently witnessing a transition phase with hybrid models of work and study,” he added. Founded in 2010, the company claims to conduct more than 3,000 live classes, with an average of 70,000 learners who collectively spend more than 500,000 hours each month on the platform.
