<ul><li><keyword id="1106616" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="truecaller" source="Orion">Truecaller</keyword> is now looking to introduce a set of features that will allow users to respond to business calls without really picking them up.</li><li>The upcoming feature would allow the customers to let such businesses know whether they are interested in their offering.</li><li>The company had also launched the ‘reason for call’ feature for businesses last year to enable effective communication between customers and companies.</li></ul>The constant unsolicited calls from insurance companies, credit card companies and loan providers are extremely annoying, to say the least. In a bid to improve business communication, Truecaller is now looking to introduce a set of features that will allow users to rate such calls and respond to them without really picking them up. Priyam Bose, the Global Head for Go to Market at Truecaller for Business, noted several businesses keep on blindly calling the customers and such feedback could help them optimise their communication in a much more efficient manner. The upcoming feature would allow the customers to let such businesses know whether they are interested in their offering through automated messages like ‘please don’t call me back’ or ‘call me back later’. This feature will make it much simpler for users to let businesses know whether they are the right target audience for them. Such a feature does exist on Truecaller and phones for peer-to-peer calls. However, the customer service numbers of companies are usually one-way and do not allow customers to send messages or call back. Truecaller’s latest feature would be targeted for those customer services only. Secondly, the feature would be enabled for verified businesses that are represented by the green popup on the Truecaller app. Companies pay for this verification to let the customer know that they are a verified business and gain their trust. The feature is a part of Truecaller’s plans to enable reverse communication, which will reduce spam and allow both businesses and their customers to communicate with each other in an optimized manner. The company had also launched the ‘reason for call’ feature for businesses last year, where businesses could cite their reason for calling the customer. Bose told Business Insider, “today we are solving for the first leap of it, where business is making that communication by calling. Then tomorrow the tools will further enable the users to communicate back to those businesses.” The company is still working on the feature and has not decided on a timeline to launch it. Notably, India is the biggest market for Truecaller. About 73% — or 205 million — of its 278.1 million monthly active users are from India. It also counts companies like Uber India, Swiggy, Airtel, Flipkart, Byju’s, Urban Company, HDFC Bank, and Unacademy, among others, as its key customers. The country contributes about 69% to its overall revenue. Truecaller is working on a new feature to help tackle unsolicited calls from insurance companies, loan providers

According to a <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/u81i7b/google_will_kill_call_recording_apps_once_and_for/">post</a> by a Reddit user, a new Play Store policy that comes into effect from May 11 will stop third-party apps from recording calls on Android devices. This is not the first time that Google has tried to stop call recording. With the Android 10 update, Google completely removed the call recording feature on its devices. Google claimed that this was done keeping in mind privacy and security. Another reason for this could be that call recording laws are different from country to country. After this, several third-party apps such as TrueCaller and ACR Phone started using the <keyword id="13665796" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="accessibility-api" source="Orion">Accessibility API</keyword> to record calls. However, Google has come down heavily on this and has announced that Accessibility API can no longer be used to record calls. “The Accessibility API is not designed and cannot be requested for remote call audio recording,” Google said on its <a href="https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/11899428#accessibility_preview">support page</a>. “The use of the Accessibility API must be documented in the Google Play listing,” Google added. The new policy change affects the ability of third-party apps to use the Accessibility API for recording calls. Google is killing call recording apps on Android phones from May 11

Swedish caller identification app <keyword id="1106616" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TrueCaller">Truecaller</keyword> on Wednesday introduced new features, including one that allows users to set a reason for their call, and enable the receiver to check whether the incoming call is personal, business or something urgent. Termed "Call Reason," this feature is expected to increase pick up rates, especially when callers are calling from new numbers. The other two features introduced by Truecaller for its 250 million active users globally are "Schedule SMS" and "SMS Translate". "We are thrilled at the launch of Call reason, Schedule SMS and SMS Translate. We have been working towards building an innovative communication suite for our users and these three features are the next big step in line with this mission," Rishit Jhunjhunwala, Chief Product Officer at Truecaller, said while introducing the new features at a virtual event. Truecaller said that Call Reason will start rolling out from Wednesday to all Android users and will be launching for iOS early next year. The new Schedule SMS feature extends the platform's Caller ID feature to enable users to schedule a message reminder of any events, meetings, or what groceries you need to pick up at the end of the day. Users can schedule SMS by simply selecting the icon while messaging and choose a date and time. Your message will be sent then, and you will always be able to see it scheduled in your chat. This feature is available for Android users only. Additionally, the SMS Translate feature allows users to instantly translate the content of their messages directly in Truecaller without leaving the app. This feature works for both SMS and instant messages (IM). The app automatically detects if a foreign language is used in the messaging screen and will show that a translation is available. This feature is powered by Google's ML Kit and all messages are processed locally in the phone, which means the content of your messages never leaves your device. Language packs are downloaded to your device before translation begins. Users can also download additional languages to use them offline, anytime and anywhere. The SMS Translate feature will only be available for Android. All these features will be free for all consumers, said Truecaller which earlier this month claimed to have 185 million monthly active users and over 150 million daily active users in India. However, Truecaller launched ‘Call Reason’, a feature that enables callers to set a reason for their call, helping the receiver to check what the call is about, in October and to familiarize people with this novel idea, it has come up with 2 very interesting, Bollywood-style short films, ‘<keyword id="26605" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="waaris">Waaris</keyword>’ and ‘Kidnap’. However, your new campaign comprises 2 short films, both around 5-minutes long. What was your thought behind the campaign? From our previous experience, we’ve come to realise that it's not entirely true that people have lower attention spans but just many more options, today. Our films have huge entertainment value while subtly integrating the product and the brand. We decided to weave the entire story around the product and its benefits rather than have a great story and then think of how to fit the brand in. This, I believe, is the right way to do content and not forced logo brandings or product integrations. Q) You had introduced Call Reason in October. Since then, how have you been able to build a buzz around the feature as well as the campaign? Like with any new feature, we do a gradual roll out, increasing the number of users who get the update gradually, while monitoring for any issues. In parallel, we were able to work with a lot of influencers and users who had requested this feature to us, and create a video with them to promote it. Now this phase of the campaign builds on the promise of offering our users ‘true choice’ to focus on what matters. Q) What were the insights that led to Truecaller coming up with Call Reason? Call Reason was the most requested feature from our users over the past year. Even for us, the logical evolution after telling people ‘who is calling’ is to tell them ‘why they’re calling’. We believe that every call has the potential to alter what happens next. This we showed beautifully with the true story behind Nawazuddin’s struggle as an actor and how one call shot him to stardom in our 2015 campaign. Now, with a reason displayed before you pick up the call, you will be able to make a more informed decision, enabling you to make the most of every opportunity. Q) What kind of reception has it seen from users so far? At a product level, you only need to do a quick search on our social channels to see the kind of overwhelmingly positive reception this feature has gotten. Its finally people who asked for it and now that we’ve built it, they are loving it. As for the campaign, it is picking up pace pretty rapidly, as we speak and once we release the second film over this weekend, we should see a lot more traction and reach coming in. Q) Take us behind the scenes of the campaigns. How did you conceptualize and bring the idea to fruition? The original idea came across while talking to our creative partners at <keyword id="10380383" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="wirality">Wirality</keyword>, who worked on this campaign. We looked at popular movies, where that one phone call changes the course and direction of the film. This is a reflection of real life too and that’s when it hit us that Call Reason as a feature empowers people to ‘Take The Right Call’ both literally and figuratively. That's where the whole idea grew from and we married Bollywood style storytelling and characters with the seamless integration of the feature and the brand into it. Our creative partners at Wirality, the director Pranav and the production team at MOM (Mortal on Mission) have done a fabulous job with amazing casting and simple yet powerful storytelling. For the most part there are no dialogues but just characterisation and amazing acting skills that uplifts the video and keeps the audience glued in. Q) Apart from the films, how else are you informing consumers about Call Reason? What media are you using? When Call Reason was first being rolled out, we did a virtual briefing with journalists. Thanks to that, there was a significant amount of press coverage. We’re now doing this campaign to create awareness and excitement about the feature and what it can really do. This is a full fledged digital campaign. But at the end of the day, the proof is in the pudding. The moment you use Call Reason, you realise how useful it actually is. We’ve also provided complete control to users. You can customise your reasons, set reasons individually for certain callers or switch off the feature entirely. Q) Do you anticipate a spike in users due to this feature, considering the novelty of the idea? Most definitely. At Truecaller, we focus our efforts around our vibrant community that is now 190 million and growing in India. They are really the ones at the forefront when it comes to letting us know what’s working, what’s not, actively identifying numbers and marking calls as spam/scam. Post the lockdowns, we did cross a significant milestone too: onboarding roughly 4 lakh new registered users per day on Truecaller. All this happens organically and is a testament to just how vital our service is. Q) What are your marketing plans for the upcoming year? Truecaller till last year hardly spent much on marketing. Are you looking at increasing your spends in the next few quarters? We have always enjoyed great publicity via word of mouth from our users and that has helped us with exponential organic growth, in India and beyond. For this very reason, unlike other apps, we’ve never really needed to focus on user acquisition but rather concentrate on making user engagement, loyalty and building relationships. For this we plan to have a lot more focus on creating a lot more exciting and meaningful branded entertainment based campaigns next year.

The findings are a part of <keyword id="1106616" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TrueCaller">Truecaller</keyword>'s <keyword id="10396638" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="annual-insights-report">annual Insights Report</keyword> that listed the Top 20 Countries Affected by Spam Calls in 2020. This is the fourth edition of the report wherein there has been a significant shift in the ranking of countries that received the most spam calls. With the pandemic breaking out earlier this year and countries going into lockdown, this year’s report has shown that not only has the pandemic affected communication behaviour but also spam patterns around the world. A closer look at spam calls in India According to the report, India has dropped down to 9th position in terms of number of spam calls received by users globally, while Brazil continues to stay on top. Spam calls received by users in India have decreased by 34%. Despite a reduction in the amount of spam calls received, India still makes it into the top 10 most spammed countries. One of the most interesting revelations that came from this year’s report was that 98.5% of all spam calls in India originate from domestic numbers, which could partly explain why spam calls have been decreasing in India, as strict curfews implemented in the country earlier this year made it impossible for telemarketers to go to work, or utilise the equipment they need to carry out large scale spam campaigns. Another interesting insight is that the first three months of lockdown in India saw calls to emergency services increase by 148%. With regard to spam call categorisation, operators continue to be the top spammers in India with 52% user calls received for the upselling of various offers and reminders. However, the study also witnessed telemarketing services emerging as big spammers, recording a total of 34%. The following graph highlights the top spammed states in India. This level of granular data for India is new to the 2020 report. Gujarat emerged as the state that received the most spam calls in 2020, followed closely by Maharashtra. We also noted that the largest cities contributed a majority share of spam for the respective state they are in. Other key trends ● Truecaller found that spam reached its lowest point in April when strict curfews and lockdowns were implemented worldwide. The overall volume of calls also dipped during this period. However, from this point, reports of scammers taking advantage of the uncertainty around the pandemic emerged. In May, spam calls started to pick up again and have been increasing on average by 9.7% per month. ● October this year was the record high in terms of spam calls. It was 22.4% higher compared to pre-lockdown. ● The biggest increase of spam calls comes from Europe and the US - where Hungary has seen the biggest jump (1132%), followed by Germany (685%), Belgium (557%) and Romania (395%). ● An escalation of <keyword id="6206915" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="scam-calls">scam calls</keyword> and robocalls around the world is expanding their share within the most common spam categories. Scammers taking advantage of the pandemic is a primary reason for the increase of scam calls. ● Earlier this year, Truecaller had released the 6th edition of our US Spam &amp; Scam Report, where 56 million Americans reported having lost money to phone scams, and an estimated $19.7 billion USD was lost to scam calls. Of those who lost money to phone scams in the past, the average reported loss was $351 (up from $244 in 2019) and 61.5% got duped because of a robocall. ● Indonesia slipped down the list to 6th position as spam calls have reduced by 34% this year, going from 27.9 spam calls per month to 18.3. However, financial services upselling various offers continue to plague the country, as can be seen by its 52% share of total spam. Scam calls also remain to be a problem in Indonesia (9%). ● The most alarming trend in the UK is that scam calls account for more than one-third of the top spammers. From April (after the lockdown was eased) to October, scam calls have increased with 59% and sales calls have seen an increase of 48%. ● Spam calls in Mexico have decreased significantly (40%) this year. Last year, Mexicans would receive on average 25.7 spam calls, and this year it has dropped to 15.5. However, Mexico remains the 2nd most spammed country in Latin America. Top spammers in Mexico continue to come from financial services (27%) and debt collector groups (24%). ● Another devastating fact related to India, is that 8 out of 10 women in India receive sexual harassment or inappropriate calls and SMS regularly. ● This is the first time Vietnam enters the list of the most spammed countries in the world. In the past 12 months, spam calls in Vietnam have increased by 182%. The majority of the spam calls come from financial services (45%), while scam calls, with an increase of 31%, are flooding the country. ● Belgium rounds out the list of new European entrants to the top spammed list that has experienced exponential growth in spam calls. ● Last year, Peru was the 2nd most spammed country in the world. With a sharp decrease of spam calls (59%), Peru has now dropped down to 14th position. However, Peru still ranks as one of the most spammed countries (4th) in Latin America.

"Truecaller provides a vital service for over 170 million people in India, identifying and blocking hundreds of millions of spam calls and SMS every single day," it added. Saying its inclusion in the list "unfair" and "unjust", Truecaller added that it stores all user data in India and all app features are permission-based and disabled by default. Moreover, a majority of Truecaller employees globally are Indian and the platform does not upload phonebooks or sell user data, it claimed. Huawei beats Samsung to take the top spot in global foldable smartphone shipments

It also calls into question how new technology may be used to sidestep otherwise barred policing methods. For example, the landmark 1968 <keyword id="11893011" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="Orion">Supreme Court</keyword> case Terry v. Ohio ruled that police must have "reasonable suspicion" that a person might have committed a crime before they can compel that person to identify themselves. Due to that ruling, it may not be lawful for to police use facial recognition software to compel identity without having reasonable suspicion first.The instructor, Nick Jerman, has taught thousands of police officers around the country how to do social media investigations through Street Cop Training. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/police-trained-create-fake-social-media-accounts-using-ai-images-2022-1">Insider previously reported</a> that he has advised police to make fake social-media accounts for work using AI-generated profile images, violating some rules on platforms like Facebook. Jerman <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/police-trained-create-fake-social-media-accounts-using-ai-images-2022-1">has also encouraged</a> using these social-media investigative methods to gather information about "hot" women in order to lie to and manipulate them.Jerman is a detective for Maryland's Montgomery County, where <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/police-trained-create-fake-social-media-accounts-using-ai-images-2022-1">he is facing an internal investigation</a> after Insider asked the county police department to comment on rape jokes Jerman made on his personal Twitter account and Trayvon Martin jokes he made on his personal Tumblr account.In a <a href="https://streetcoptraining.com/captivate-podcast/social-media-and-online-tactics-feat-nick-jerman/">July 2021 episode</a> of the Street Cop Podcast with Dennis Benigno, the company's founder, Jerman encouraged using facial recognition software to determine the identity of the person pulled over. The Street Cop Podcast is advertised as "The training that cops deserve" and, along with Street Cop Training's other programs, is marketed to active-duty police."Let's say you're on a <keyword id="12320469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="traffic-stop" source="Orion">traffic stop</keyword> and we have someone in the car that we suspect may be wanted," Benigno asked during the episode. "What do we do in that situation?""Well there's a couple of paid programs you can use where you can take their picture, and it'll put it in," Jerman said, referring to facial recognition tools, before recommending "another one called PimEyes you can use." PimEyes is a free, public-facing facial-recognition search engine.Those recommendations would not be legal if the police don't have reasonable suspicion that the person pulled over has committed a crime, according to Greg Nojeim, senior counsel and co-director of the Security and Surveillance Project at the Center for Democracy &amp; Technology. In Benigno and Jerman's example, it's unclear if this is the case or not. It also lists Clearview AI, a facial recognition tool that tries to match faces with billions of images the company scraped from social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Police have to pay to use Clearview AI long-term, though the company does offer <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/ryanmac/facial-recognition-local-police-clearview-ai-table">30-day free trials</a>.<a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/21195743-street_cop_training_-_social_media_and_osint_bookmar_1srosjhetcpr8dzq5mjm8wru7lctysfjq1aoxbge_u14docx?responsive=1&amp;title=1">It also lists</a> Thorn Spotlight, a facial-recognition tool for finding victims of child sex trafficking, and FacePlusPlus, another facial recognition tool.Jerman and Benigno also discussed another scenario on the July 2021 podcast: An officer pulls someone over on a traffic stop, but the officer can't compel the person to show their identification. Based on the Terry v. Ohio ruling, this probably means the officers don't have reasonable suspicion."How about, you're in a situation where you can't compel ID and before you even ask you're like there's something not right with this guy and he's gonna lie," Benigno said.Jerman suggested getting the person's phone number, either by asking the person, or by accusing the person of stealing a phone in the car and asking if they can call the phone in order to exonerate them. "[Say] 'I see that phone in the car, we've had a lot of thefts of phones,' say 'Is that really your phone?' and then you can call it to see if that's the real phone number," Jerman said. "If you can get the phone number from your target, the world is your oyster."Then, Jerman said police should see if there are any social media accounts associated with the phone number. He said they should also use services like Truecaller, which shows the names associated with a phone number by finding how it's labeled in other people's contact lists. (Truecaller gets this information by asking users to share the contacts in their phone.)"A person who gives up their phone number makes a choice," Nojeim, the Center for Democracy and Technology lawyer, told Insider. It’s not just 9apps that’s reportedly at fault. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/10-Years-After-Matrix-Trilogy-Agent-Smith-Stars-In-GE-Ad/articleshow/21177954.cms">Agent Smith</a> uses vulnerabilities in previous versions of Android to latch onto devices. So, the malware only gets onto your phone if you haven’t updated it to the latest version of Google’s operating system. The Israeli security company also found that while the malware was primarily focused on users in India, it has made its way onto 25 million devices — including Android phones in the US and the UK. Undercover on your phone Users downloading WhatsApp from 9apps, rather than the Google Play Store, have inadvertently been loading the malware onto their devices. It takes over WhatsApp and other primary apps on your device, to replace them ad-filled versions. Agent Smith makes its way onto your phone just like any other app. It’s usually disguised a photo editing tool or an adult game in the app store which starts to penetrate the system after the app is installed. Disguised as a legitimate Google update tool, Agent Smith then replaces original apps on your phone will malicious versions. And, there aren’t any notifications that will warn you. The apps and the ads themselves aren’t dangerous per se, according to the researchers who made the discovery, but the malware’s true intent might extend beyond showing ads. <div type="ExtQuote" text="Due to its ability to hide it’s icon from the launcher and impersonate any popular existing app on a device, there are endless possibilities for this sort of malware to harm a user’s device." auname="Check Point report"></div>

 Check Point also noted that it found indications that the hackers were working their way onto Google’s Play Store with 11 apps containing a ‘dormant’ piece of the software. A simple remedy If you’re one of the people who has been using 9apps and you’re afraid that Agent Smith might have made its onto your phone, there’s a simple to check to find out. Make your way to your menus Android settings and find the Apps Menu. In the list of apps, look out for names like ‘Google Updater’, ‘Google Installer for U’, ‘Google Powers’ or ‘Google Installer’. In case you have any of those apps on your phone, yes, you have been affected. But the solution is also simple. Simply uninstall the affected app. And, in the future, download apps only from Google’s official Play Store to stay safe. Malware affecting Jio Apps, WhatsApp, Flipkart and Hotstar ‘primarily targeted’ Indian users through Alibaba’s app store

<ul><li>India’s central government’s <keyword id="116246" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Telecommunications">Department of Telecommunications</keyword> has issued a notice to the state governments to keep from implementing ‘unwarranted’ <keyword id="6471018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet-Shutdowns-in-India">internet shutdowns in India</keyword>. </li><li><keyword id="3944051" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet-Shutdowns">Internet shutdowns</keyword> in India have skyrocketed to being the highest in the world, with 40% of them occurring the volatile state of Jammu and Kashmir. </li><li>The DoT has asked the state governments to thoroughly ensure that they are following the parameters set by the Telegraph Act.</li></ul>The Indian government’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a notice to its state governments warning against issuing an ‘internet shutdown’ in situations where ‘public emergency’ or ‘public safety’ are not in question. Those are the two clearly identified rules of the Telegraph Act that allows for the ‘temporary suspension of telecom services’. The parameters for internet shutdowns in India may be broad, but they are clear in their intent. Despite this clarity, internet shutdowns in India are the <a href="https://www.internetshutdowns.in/">highest in the world</a> with 130 shutdowns occuring in 2018 according to the internet shutdown tracker by the Software Freedom Law Center. That’s nearly double the amount from 2017 that stood at 79 internet shutdowns in India. Here’s how states manage to manage to overlook a basic law The Indian government is well aware of the problem and knows that in certain cases this could be treated as a violation of basic human rights. Especially in the a state like Jammu and Kashmir that has cumulatively lost its access to internet for <a href="https://sflc.in/sites/default/files/reports/Living%20in%20Digital%20Darkness%20-%20A%20Handbook%20on%20Internet%20Shutdowns%20in%20India%2c%20May%202018%20-%20by%20SFLCin.pdf">nearly a month</a> over the last four years. Of the total number of shutdowns this year, 40% of them happened in that state. The <a href="https://thewire.in/government/jammu-kashmir-has-lost-18-days-of-mobile-internet-access-over-last-four-years">reasons of revoking</a> citizens’ access to internet ranges from blocking access to social media to blocking off all telecom services in specific localities. But, in most cases it has been a statewide shutdown of the internet under the guise of protests, agitation and ‘precautionary measures’. Internet shutdowns have become a tool in the hands of state government and law enforcement authorities where they need a ‘quick-fix’ solution to ‘potentially’ volatile situation. And, in every scenario, there are arguments to be made on the legitimacy of the reasons by implementing an internet shutdown in India. Especially when you look at the example of the internet shutdown in the western state of Rajasthan, where the state government <a href="https://www.medianama.com/2018/08/223-rajasthan-orders-its-26th-internet-shutdown-in-2018-seconds-jk/">justified</a> it was to ‘prevent cheating during examinations’. Public safety was not in question and neither was it a public emergency as stipulated by the Telegraph Act. An estimate by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) from earlier this year projects that internet shutdowns in India may have <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2018/apr/26/internet-shutdown-cost-indian-economy-usd-3-billion-from-2012-17-study-1806393.html">cost the economy</a> nearly $3 billion between the years of 2012 and 2017 — not to mention the hampering the Digital India initiative, as highlighted by the DoT’s directive.
