In a boost to Elon Musk's <keyword id="20034452" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="starlink" source="keywords">Starlink</keyword>, Communications Minister Scindia has said the spectrum for satellite broadband will be allocated and not auctioned as sought by Indian billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Mittal. The satellite broadband spectrum will however be not given free and sector regulator Trai will fix a price for the resource, he told PTI in a text and video interview. "Every country has to follow the <keyword id="20848482" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="international-telecommunications-union" source="keywords">International Telecommunications Union</keyword> (ITU), which is the organisation that lays out the policy for spectrum in space or satellites, and the ITU has been very clear in terms of the spectrum being given out on an assignment basis. In addition, if you look across the world today, I cannot think of a single country that auctions spectrum for satellite," Scindia said. India is a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency for digital technology. Musk's Starlink and global peers like Amazon's Project Kuiper back an administrative allocation. While Ambani's Reliance Jio has been vocal about the need to allocate such spectrum through an auction to provide a level playing field to legacy operators who buy airwaves and set up infrastructure like telecom towers, Mittal last month at an industry event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present articulated the need to use bidding for such allocation. Jio and Mittal's Bharti Airtel - India's largest and second-largest operators, respectively - feel that giving away the satellite broadband airwaves at a pre-decided price by the government will create an uneven playing field since they had to compete in an auction to get spectrum for their terrestrial wireless phone networks. The two are vying for a piece of the satellite broadband segment as well. Musk-led Starlink is demanding administrative allotment of licences in line with the global trend as it looks to tap into the world's fastest-growing mobile telephony and internet market. Scindia said the Telecom Act of 2023 passed in December has put the matter in 'Schedule 1', which means that the Satcom spectrum will be allocated administratively. Such an allocation will be at a government-decided price, and allow foreign firms like Starlink to offer voice and data services. If the spectrum were to be auctioned, it would have made it costlier for Starlink to roll out services. Starlink has applied for a licence to start operations in the country. Scindia, however, offered no clues on the fate of his application. The minister said that the regulatory process is very clear and transparent. The new Telecom Act has been passed, and the Satellite spectrum is very clearly a part of that in schedule one, he pointed out. "...and therefore, we are open to looking at the application of any entity that wants to invest in India at this point in time. I think only one or two licenses have been given out. And whoever else wants to participate, India is surely going to welcome that," the minister said. Last month, Musk, in a post on X, termed the demand made by Jio for shunning sector regulator Trai's consultation paper on satellite broadband being allocated and not auctioned as "unprecedented", and when Mittal made the pitch in the presence of the Prime Minister, he asked if it was "too much trouble" to allow Starlink to provide internet services in India. This was perhaps the first time that Musk, whose networth of USD 241 billion is more than the combined wealth of Ambani, Mittal and Gautam Adani, had spoken directly against demands for a level playing field made by the Indian firms. The report by Twitter has found that 51% use the platform as the medium for current news and latest updates, while 43% users like to follow celebrities. About 49% of the users rely on Twitter to keep track of business and finance updates. “We know that video consumption is on the rise and so we did a study on consumer behaviour to get a deeper understanding on what are the content they (users) are consuming, what kind of content and what are other format preferences, what motivates them to stop and watch the video and engage with any particular piece of content,” Preetha Athrey, director, global business marketing, Twitter APAC, told Business Insider <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>. According to the report, about 56% of the users said they had watched videos on Twitter for at least five minutes a day while turning on the audio. More than half of Twitter users search for videos on the platform, while 42% discover them while scrolling through the app, the report noted. Users across India perceive videos not only as entertaining but also as informative. About 79% people in India use Twitter more when they're watching sports content, and what they seek on Twitter is exclusive content, game highlights, interesting stats and live coverage, the report noted. According to the TeamLease Employment Outlook Report for Q4, Bengaluru and Mumbai have emerged as the cities with the highest hiring sentiment in the services and manufacturing sectors respectively. “Surplus public investment in PLI schemes, the Indian Government's asset monetization programme, increased private participation in key sectors, and the revisions in FDI laws in the defence and telecom sectors has fueled growth in companies across sectors, especially in Tier 1 and Tier 2 locations. Companies are therefore shoring up their talent pool to meet their increasing requirements,” said Kartik Narayan, chief executive officer, TeamLease Services. TeamLease Services is one of the country’s leading human resource companies and offers its services to over 3,500 employers. In the services sector, Bengaluru tops the list with 97% of employers expressing a higher hiring interest, followed by Chennai with 94%, Delhi with 90%, Hyderabad with 86% and Mumbai with 85%. When it comes to the manufacturing sector, Mumbai tops the list with 97% of employers expressing a higher hiring sentiment, followed by Bengaluru with 94%, Chennai with 89%, Delhi with 84% and Pune with 73%. Bengaluru has shown the highest hiring intent, emerging as one of the top-two cities in both the sectors. Bengaluru and Mumbai have emerged as ‘sweet spots’ from a holistic perspective across sectors. On the other hand, healthcare and pharmaceuticals dominate the list in the manufacturing sector with a 98% hiring intent, followed by FMCG at 86% and electric vehicle (EV) and infrastructure industry at 71%. "India’s GDP vision and multiple domestic focused initiatives has provided the much-needed impetus to the industry post the pandemic. This in turn has given a fillip to employment generation; improving the intent to hire across sectors, locations and industries. 60% employers in manufacturing and 77% in services, inclining to hire more, is a testament to the growing opportunities in the ecosystem,” said Mayur Taday, chief business officer, TeamLease Services. Preetha Athrey, who is the director at global business marketing for APAC at Twitter tells Business Insider in an exclusive interview that the platform has been working on it constantly.“Our priority is to keep people on the platform safe and this is something we constantly do. We review a lot of content and a lot of reports that come to us,” Athrey said. Twitter has also rolled out various safety features which will safeguard its users against targeted attacks and trolls. “We constantly communicate about the new safety features to our users we have launched. 'Unmention’ to give people more control over their mentions. ‘Unmention’ lets you untag yourself from a conversation, so you can no longer be mentioned in replies. Additionally, people can also control who engages with the conversations they are starting,” Athrey said. Unmention feature was rolled out by the company in July this year and it allow the users to remove themselves from an unwanted conversation in which they don’t wish to be a part of. "Through Conversation Settings, people on the service can choose who can engage with and reply to their Tweets. In March 2021, we also extended Conversation Settings to our brand partners. Through our policies, products, and partnerships, we’re already seeing progress happen, and we’ll continue to invest in brand safety to make Twitter a safer place for all. We understand that ultimately, behind every Tweet is a breathing, thinking, and feeling individual who wrote it, and we are committed to our job to empower them, protect them, and encourage them so they can share that voice freely,” Athrey added. Another feature rolled by the social media app is Safety Mode. By turning on "Safety Mode" in settings, a user can have Twitter scan and it will automatically block interactions from "harmful" accounts for seven days. Accounts that are blocked with this feature will be unable to follow a user, see a user's tweets, or send direct message, albeit only temporarily. The micro-blogging platform said earlier this month that it will add pinned Tweets and descriptions on trends to help explain why something is trending on its platform. "More trend updates, even more context. We'll now add improved headlines and short descriptions to some Trends, so you can get the rundown on why something's trending when you're in the Explore tab or you tap into a Trend," the company said in a tweet on Tuesday. In the coming weeks, Twitter users would see brief descriptions added to some trends as well to help add context to the trending topics. The idea is to make Twitter's Trending section feel more like a newspaper experience. Descriptions are developed by Twitter curation team and follow guidelines. Descriptions on trends will be available on twitter.com and Twitter for iOS and Android. According to the company, a combination of algorithms and the curation team determine if a Tweet represents a trend by evaluating if the Tweet is very reflective of the trend and popular. "Our algorithms are designed to identify representative Tweets that aren't potentially abusive, spam, or posted by accounts trying to take advantage of our system," Twitter said. Representative Tweets and descriptions on trends will be available in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Egypt, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States. While pre-pandemic, the public relations and communications industry was already making significant strides in technology by analyzing data to craft a better customer experience, the pace of digital adoption and the advent of a digital-first PR approach have been accelerated. From my own experience, a key ingredient across PR strategies, content marketing, corporate communications, and media coverage that will rule the PR roost in 2022 is the crucial need to customize bespoke services and products, every step of the way. From unified communications (UC) that are employee-centric to personalizing media pitches, customization sits at the heart of nearly every PR and communications trend. Brands, big and small, capitalised on this rising trend in the first half of the year. But, once the ASCI guidelines came into place from June 2021, there was a downward slip observed in the engagement. Instagram algorithms underwent a great uphaul as influencers had to win against AI algorithms. This phase again got brands and companies to focus on creating news and building brand recall. While demand has been high for PR, there have been some apprehensions also noticed when it comes to being out in the open/media. The second half of this year, saw print media come back, as newspaper circulation started, and people started reading it like before. This behavioural change instigated a need to be present in Print media, via editorial articles, and this will be the biggest trend in 2022. The need to present in Print media. Some of the rulings include requirements to take down illegal content, stronger transparency, and extremes like political and journalistic censorship, according to the study.Freedom House says the trend can be attributed to problems within society like extremism, exploitative business practices, and criminal activity.The report said there were "few positive exceptions" to the worldwide push to regulate the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-big-tech-bills-facebook-google-apple-amazon-antitrust-2021-6">big tech companies</a>, such as dismantling harmful online harassment and manipulative market practices."While a few measures introduced this year have the potential to hold tech giants more accountable for their performance, most simply impose state and even political responsibilities on private firms without securing greater rights for users," the report said.
