From a small office in the regional capital Srinagar, he speaks out for those who have no voice."This society has pushed them to the wall. They are living an invisible life," he told Business Insider"They face discrimination in every aspect of life. They are abused physically, verbally. They face a lot of street harassment. They face a lot of sexual abuse as well."One of the few trans individuals to have made a name for herself in Kashmir is Abdul Rashid, otherwise known as Reshma. She is a well-known singer here, but even she is struggling to make ends meet.She makes a little money from tailoring, sitting on the floor of her small apartment with an old sewing machine. Her experience growing up is similar to many among the trans community. "I wasn't allowed even out of our lane. I would be asked where I had been for so long and then beaten for being late. We would take the narrow side streets to avoid getting bullied on the main roads. Some would even spit on us," she told <keyword id="9071581" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="business-insider-weekly">Business Insider Weekly</keyword>.From a small drawer, under lock and key, she takes out a small vial and applies mascara."Growing up, I wasn't interested in studying, but was into girlish things. I used to put chalk on my face as powder," she said.<h2>Transgender people in Kashmir are living in the shadows.</h2>Unlike in other parts of India and Pakistan, the transgender community here rarely dress in colourful clothing, afraid of ridicule — or worse.Subhan, known as Shabnam, is luckier. Her family has always supported her."I used to get along well with ladies, not that much with men. That's because I had an affinity towards them and not towards men. As time passed by, I started dressing up like them, and then it became clear that I was a third gender," she said.But a life of living in the shadows, combined with the present-day double crisis of pandemic and security crackdown, has taken its toll."I must say that we face so many issues that we can't even count them," she said.Traditional patriarchal values mean that sex and sexual orientation in the Muslim-majority region is a taboo subject. And gender affirmation procedures are not seen as a viable option."Our Quran doesn't allow us to bring changes to our bodies that won't be good. How our Lord made us, we should remain that way. We are a third gender," Shabnam said.<h2>With the region in political turmoil, the past year has been suffocating.</h2><div type="image" title="security" height="1080" width="1920" msid="78711203" hostid="261"></div>Already a shunned and invisible minority, Kashmir's trans community is now living in a land that has been turned upside down. Thousands were arrested and imprisoned — and all phone and internet services cut off.Today, security forces continue to line the streets and man checkpoints.For the trans community, with little acceptance from wider society and no means to communicate with the outside world, this last year has been suffocating.Communications have only been partially restored but blackouts are still a regular occurrence.Aijaz Ahmad says mental health issues are prevalent in the community — <a href="https://theins.in/2017/11/30/transgenders-suffering-stress-even-attempted-suicide/">as are attempts at suicide</a>. "We can't go to people's houses because our work involves interacting with people in their homes. At the moment we are hesitant to meet people and are scared of getting infected and vice versa."With weddings cancelled and an increasing number of people finding their own partners online, times are tough."People used to call us to dance and sing at marriages, and we used to get good money as well. One giver says their donation is partly to "send a big 'fuck you' to all the transphobes." That's when the shadows over McConnell's joyous event begin to emerge.McConnell, 35, is a trans man from Kent, England, who's giving birth to his second child - and he wants legal recognition as his child's father on the birth certificate. He said that it's part of the UK's rhetoric of transphobia ingrained within the <keyword id="11894119" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="media" source="Orion">media</keyword> and that he's now considering taking legal action against The Times.The Times did not respond to Insider's call for comment."I became a journalist in 2013, and for two or three years everything was just normal," McConnell told Insider."I could be a trans person working at a major national newspaper, and my transness never felt particularly relevant, except for when I might be asked to write the 'Trans Guide 101' style piece."But now, he says, there's a "fear-mongering moral panic" against the trans community in the press - a "campaign of misinformation" stopping trans people from being safe in the hands of UK media.India Willoughby, 56, a trans TV broadcaster, told Insider that her career as a newscaster and one of the "Loose Women" on the hit ITV daytime show had been plain sailing.But that changed in 2021, she said. But a recent BBC article titled "<a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-57853385">We're being pressured into sex by some trans women</a>" has sparked heated conversations.The article described cisgender lesbians who claimed to have been forced into sex by <keyword id="11918053" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="transgender" source="Orion">transgender</keyword> women only to be met with anger and violence when they did not want to.The BBC said one person interviewed said she had been "described as transphobic, a genital fetishist, a pervert and a 'terf'" - a trans-exclusionary radical feminist - because "she is only sexually attracted to women who are biologically female and have vaginas."Another source for the article was a woman called Lily Cade who professed to be "Porn Valley's Gold Star Lesbian." After her interview was published, she said in a blog that all trans women were "vile, weak, disgusting, whiny, fake-victim" and encouraged people to "lynch" them.While the blog post is unavailable, <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/anti-transgender-activist-quoted-bbc-calls-trans-women-lynched-1645231">Newsweek published an article</a> detailing it. The BBC edited its article to remove Cade's involvement.After the article's publication, trans porn performer Chelsea Poe <a href="https://twitter.com/ChelseaPoe666/status/1456340063105662977">said on Twitter</a> that she too was interviewed by the author of the BBC piece on the same topic but did not feature in the article.In <a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/5oyc1iJCzKFbhVkbO1YArT?si=HmPLxITRTba8EqvF5M4k0Q&amp;nd=1nd=1">a recent podcast</a> she described feeling uncomfortable with the direction of the conversation, and expressed surprise that Cade had been includedOther <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/society/2021/nov/04/bbc-changes-online-article-at-centre-of-transphobia-row">criticism</a> of the article included that it used data from a self-selecting survey with 80 people, a sample not big enough or representative enough to create valid data.In a statement to Insider, the BBC said: "This is an important piece of journalism that raises issues that should be discussed."We have updated this article, published last week, to remove a contribution from one individual in light of comments she has published on blog posts in recent days, which we have now been able to verify."We acknowledge that an admission of inappropriate behavior by the same contributor should have been included in the original article."Willoughby told Insider that she believes the BBC "is now institutionally transphobic," saying it would be "impossible for a trans person to have a high-visibility role at the BBC."She also highlighted reports claiming the BBC is planning to withdraw a partnership with Stonewall, the LGBT advocacy group.Vice News <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/akgxm5/bbc-expected-to-quit-stonewalls-lgbtq-diversity-programme">said in October</a> that BBC staff anticipated its departure from the Stonewall Diversity Champions scheme.A BBC spokesperson did not directly answer Insider's questions about it had left the scheme, but did say the group "provides advice that we are able to consider."Negative representations of trans people in the press are prevalent. A <a href="https://mermaidsuk.org.uk/news/exclusive-mermaids-research-into-newspaper-coverage-on-trans-issues/">2019 study by Mermaids</a>, a UK charity supporting transgender children and their families, found an increase from 2012 in negative portrayals of trans people within the UK print press."Over the last few years, we've seen an explosion in media stories relating to children and gender issues and, while some of it has been responsible and understanding, much has been misleading, ill-informed and even, at times, cruel," Mermaids CEO Susie Green said when the study, conducted by Paul Baker of Lancaster University, was published.In a statement to Insider, Stonewall said: "It's extremely concerning to see misinformation about trans people in the news, particularly in major media outlets."Trans people exist, which has been settled in law in the UK since 2004, and they should not be subjected to degrading 'debates' about whether their identities are real or an 'ideology.' Such discussions only serve to fuel division instead of moving us forward to a better, more inclusive world."<h2>What's the impact?</h2>McConnell and Willoughby told Insider that the often negative framing of the trans community in the UK press is incredibly harmful.<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7826438/">A study published in January</a> found that repeated exposure to transphobic content - such as articles that misgender people or trivialize trans issues - was associated with "clinically significant" symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and global psychological stress.The UK government has estimated that trans people <a href="https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/721642/GEO-LGBT-factsheet.pdf">make up less than 1% of the population</a>, but their sheer existence is a contentious topic for the media.Sitting in his home and talking to Insider, McConnell spoke about what trans people want from the press. "Really, we want nothing," he said. "It's not because we're trying to hide anything. It's because there's literally nothing to talk about. We're just completely normal, boring people. And that's such an unsatisfying answer, but it's the truth."When I talk about being a man, it's not because I'm engaging in magical thinking or I'm trying to will something to be true - it's just because it is true. The BBC and The Times are accused of stoking a 'moral panic' against the trans community

<ul><li>The upper house of the Parliament today passed the <keyword id="6358953" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Transgender">Transgender</keyword> Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019. </li><li>The bill defines trangender as a person whose gender is not the one assigned at the time of birth. </li><li>It seeks a ‘certificate of identity’ that labels their gender as “transgender.” </li><li>The bill was introduced in the lower house of the parliament on July 19 and was passed in August 2019. </li></ul>The upper house of the Parliament today passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019. The bill was tabled in <keyword id="48510" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajya-Sabha">Rajya Sabha</keyword> on November 20, after which several members demanded to move the matter to a select parliamentary committee. The bill was introduced in the lower house of the Parliament on July 19 and was passed in August 2019. The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill, 2019, which claims to protect the rights of transgenders and empower them has also been widely opposed by trans community. The LGBTQ community has been opposing the proposed legislation saying that the bill is violating individual rights. The bill defines trangender as a person whose gender is not the one assigned at the time of birth. It seeks a ‘certificate of identity’ that labels their gender as “transgender”. And if someone from the community seeks to change their gender to male of female, the administrative officer will check for the ‘correctness’ of the revised medical certificate. The bill, which includes trans-men and trans-women, persons with intersex variations, gender-queers, and persons with socio-cultural identities is in contrast with the Supreme Court’s judgement that granted protection rights to transgendered people — including self determination of gender and no mandatory medical certificate. Forced labour, any denial from use of public places, physical, sexual or emotional abuse have been listed as an <a href="https://www.prsindia.org/billtrack/transgender-persons-protection-rights-bill-2019">offence under the proposed bil</a>l. If challenged, the penalties include imprisonment of six months to two years, along with fine. The bill says that transgenders should not be discriminated against in terms of employment opportunities. However, it does not include reservations for the community either. Transgenders want to identify their own gender but law now says they need a certificate

Given the discrimination faced by the <keyword id="481266" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="transgender-community">transgender community</keyword> in India, nearly 61% of the people choose to <a href="https://www.mindbodygreen.com/articles/coming-out-age-for-lgbtq-people-new-tinder-survey-shows-changing-trends">bring out their sexuality</a> on such platforms over their friends and family, the study released by the online dating app Tinder revealed. Interestingly, Tinder receives over 7.5 million swipes everyday from India. According to another <a href="https://articles.aplus.com/a/how-dating-apps-benefit-lgbtq-singles?no_monetization=true">international survey</a> report, analysing the dating tends among the transgender community, dating apps are twice as popular among the LGBTQs as among the heterosexual ones. Of those who chose to disclose their sexuality via online dating platforms, 67% were millennials. However, one in three LGBTQ adults in the US find it <a href="https://www.advocate.com/news/2019/5/13/study-1-3-lgbtq-adults-believe-formal-coming-out-unnecessary">unnecessary to formally come out</a>, thanks to the rise in accepting society. Almost half (44%) of the adults surveyed in India reportedly said that the dating apps have emerged as a platform helping transgenders to express freely. In fact, a significant part of the people surveyed (39%) also said that it has helped them introspect their own personalities. A lot of LGBTQ adults have been using the apps that have sexual orientation mechanism. Looking at the statistics derived from the data, the company reportedly said that “Of the 73% people who say online dating apps have had a positive impact, 33% say it has provided more diversity of people to date in terms of sexual orientation, 33% say it has provided more diversity of people to date in terms of race and culture.” Owing to the stigma of the Indian society, the transgender community had faced deiscrimination on all fronts — including their relationship status. For the LGBTQ community in India, online dating platforms are helping break down  stigmas

<ul><li>In an interview with Business Insider India, <keyword id="7420771" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Naaz-Joshi">Naaz Joshi</keyword>, revealed her journey of becoming three-time Miss Diversity 2018 in India. </li><li>She was abandoned at the age of 7 and gang raped at the age of 11. </li><li>Despite all these odds, Naaz sponsored her own education and studied fashion design at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) however found it difficult to land a job at design houses. </li><li>She went under sex reassignment surgeries in 2013 and started her career in modelling. </li><li>Her next endeavour is to push for legal marriages for the LGBTQIA+ community. </li></ul>Aizya Naaz Joshi created history when won the Miss Diversity 2019 pageant for this third time, at Port Louis in Mauritius.  "My father still is not accepting me. He strongly believes that I have brought shame to the society and the family. He asked me not to use his last name," Naaz told Business Insider India. ‘I had no idea what rape even meant.’ Naaz was born a transgender to a multicultural family. Her mother is a Muslim while her father is a Hindu. In spite of having a twin brother and another younger brother, and she was always the odd one out. "When I grew up a little,all the relative told my parents to send me to the trans (hijra) community. But they declined it and wanted me to study,” she says. Yet, they did not want Naaz to stay with them either, so they sent her away to an uncle in Mumbai. The hardworking youngster took up a job at a restaurant where she washed utensils and cleaned tables. All was well until a male cousin raped her when she was 11 years old. "The sad part was that I had no idea what rape even meant. I got to know much later. All I remember is that I was brutally injured.” By the time she realised, it was too late to find a legal battle as evidence was lost with time. The government is fighting an uphill battle to reduce abuse against women, but sexual violence against transgenders is all but ignored. One of the grave indiscrepancies is with punishment. While those who abuse women could be jailed for seven years or more, in the case of transgenders it is <a href="https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/society/article/2154077/india-no-country-transgender-women">defined as physical abuse and punishments range from 6 months</a> to two years. Education failed to become the passport to future Naaz had hoped that education will sort her life.  She had encountered other trans women who danced at the bar. Despite all these odds, Naaz sponsored her own education and studied fashion designing at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). She later completed her MBA in marketing from IMT Ghaziabad. "Despite working for big labels like Ritu Kumar and Ritu Beri, I found it hard to get a job," she says. She even pursued a diploma to become an air hostess. Even with a stellar resume and being a NIFT topper, she was forced to take up a job at a massage parlour in South Delhi. “As soon as they get to know about my gender, they used to ignore me,” she laments. As many as 89% of <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/left-alone-just-2-of-trans-people-stay-with-parents/articleshow/65380226.cms">qualified transgenders in India do not find employment</a> in India.  Even when they are hired, transgenders face the problem that most women do, a blaring pay gap. And for transgenders, the pay difference is as deep as 191%. In her chosen field however, women make more money. "If companies pay ₹35,000 to a female model for a ramp walk or shoot, then it is likely that a trans woman with experience will get only ₹12,000," she informs. A fresher usually earns ₹5,000 for a shoot and if you are a woman with experience in the fashion industry it can go up to ₹35,000 but a trans women with years of experience still earns merely ₹12000. Naaz wishes that people would treat her like any other women. The Miss Diversity also doubles as a social activist to raise awareness about HIV among women and children. <ul><li>In a Pride Month special, we invited <keyword id="9445997" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vicks-mom">Vicks Mom</keyword> Gauri Sawant and Ajay Vikram, CCO- Global Clients, Publicis Singapore for a #BTSwithInsider chat. </li><li>Vikram walked us through the ideation process, execution and Sawant, on the other hand, shared her experience of becoming a star overnight. </li></ul>Since it is June, the most colourful month of the year, for last week’s episode of BTSwithInsiders, we decided to look back at an advertisement that changed the definition of motherhood in India and made us relook at our ideologies -- Vick’s Touch of Care. Normalising trans motherhood in India, Vicks initiated a conversation everyone else was afraid to have. It highlighted how motherhood goes beyond biological ties with transgender activist Gauri Sawant, who also runs an NGO called Sakhi Char Chowghi. It showcased her real life story of bringing up a girl. Conceptualised by Publicis Singapore for Procter &amp; Gamble, the video shows how Gayatri, at the age of 6, loses her biological mother, a sex worker, to HIV AIDS. It ends with Gayatri vowing to become a lawyer so that she can fight for equal human rights and build an equal environment for her foster mother.
