Reports of poor kebab quality due to artificial colouring prompted the department to take action. In light of these concerns about kebab safety, the government tested 39 samples from across Karnataka and 8 variants of kebabs were found to have harmful artificial colours. The presence of sunset yellow and carmoisine colours, in particular, were deemed unsafe for consumption. This isn't the first time the Karnataka Health Department has cracked down on harmful food additives. Following Tamil Nadu and Goa, Karnataka joined the fight for safe treats earlier this year when it flagged the use of artificial colours in cotton candy and gobi manchurian. The survey, conducted between February 12 and an unspecified date, revealed the presence of concerning chemicals in 15 out of 25 cotton candy samples and 107 out of 171 gobi manchurian samples. They found Rhodamine-b, a suspected carcinogen which already has a nationwide ban. This ban extends to sunset yellow and carmoisine in cotton candy, and tartrazine (when not used within approved limits) in gobi manchurian. If any vendors are found flouting these bans, the Food Safety and Standards Act enforces strict penalties: licence cancellation, hefty fines (up to ₹10 lakh), and even jail terms (from 7 years to life imprisonment) for using banned substances. Looking ahead, the government plans to raise awareness among food vendors about safe colouring alternatives, empower consumers and conduct surprise checks to ensure compliance with the new regulations. The success of this initiative might lead to similar scrutiny of other popular street foods, like kebabs, which often use colouring agents. This could pave the way for a future where vibrant colours on our plates come courtesy of nature, not potentially harmful chemicals.

The Tamil Nadu government should draft a law as suggested by the Madras High Court and promulgate it as an ordinance, Ramadoss said. TN govt need not wait till the next Assembly session to ban online gambling, says PMK

Chennai, Tamil Nadu's ruling <keyword id="19897149" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dmk" source="keywords">DMK</keyword>, a key constituent of the INDIA bloc, in its manifesto released on Wednesday promised to repeal the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 if the opposition alliance wins the <keyword id="19895394" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha" source="keywords">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls. Restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and holding polls there, scrapping the New Education Policy 2020, slashing fuel prices, annulling Article 361 of the Constitution that provides protection to governors from legal action and appointment of Governors following consultation with Chief Ministers, were among the key promises made by the DMK. The recommendations of the M S Swaminathan committee will be adopted to ensure that MSP for agricultural products "is set at total production cost plus 50 per cent," the DMK said. Also, it announced that if voted to power, the INDIA bloc will withdraw the Agnipath scheme and reintroduce "permanent recruitment service" in the Indian Armed forces. "From now on, population census, including caste-wise census and census concerning people below the poverty line, will be conducted by the Union government once every five years simultaneously." The DMK will firmly insist on the removal of Article 356, which allows the dismissal of duly elected state governments and imposition of President's rule. The Congress party's ally in Tamil Nadu said that "new constraints" on States' borrowing capacity, imposed by the union government beyond the limits in each state's FRBM-equivalent Act will be eliminated. "A recommendation to share cess revenues with states will be made. It will be proposed that the Finance Commission increase the horizontal devolution of tax revenue (to all States together) from 42 per cent to 50 per cent." The Union government's financial contributions to states will be based on the income tax and GST collected in those states. Thus, financial contributions will be assured based on the taxes collected within each state. The finance provided to states will be permanently determined based on the 1971 population. A 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and legislative assemblies will be implemented immediately. "DMK will insist that the Union government enact a law providing menstrual leave to women, emphasizing the journey towards gender equality." Petrol and diesel prices "will be set at Rs 75, Rs 65 (per litre)" and cooking gas cylinders shall be made available at Rs 500 (per cylinder). "The introduction of the Uniform Civil Code will be strictly prevented" to preserve India's secular nature as stated in the Constitution's preamble. "The 2019 CAA law will be repealed, and all minorities will be treated equally without any discrimination. The recommendations of the Sachar Committee for the improvement of the lives of Muslims and other minority communities will be implemented." Facilitation will be provided for <keyword id="21027983" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sri-lankan-tamil" source="keywords">Sri Lankan Tamil</keyword> refugees to get Indian citizenship. Assistance will be provided to those who wish to return to Sri Lanka. Also, the manifesto said efforts will be made to implement reservation for minorities at the all-India level, similar to Tamil Nadu. "The financial assistance previously provided to minority educational institutions has now been stopped. Action will be taken to resume this assistance." For "political" reasons, funding from foreign countries to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) has currently been stopped. "The Foreign Exchange Regulation Act will be properly amended, and measures will be taken to ensure these financial aids continue to reach NGOs without any problems." The proposal of 'One Nation, One Election' will be abandoned, and for the allocation of Lok Sabha seats to states, the current practice, based on the 1971 census will continue. All "people-unfriendly" laws introduced by the BJP government over the last 10 years will be reviewed immediately by the INDIA alliance government. The "labour-hostile laws" introduced by the BJP government will be "reformed." Through the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF), the Union government will ensure a minimum pension of Rs 5,000 per month. The number of working days under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act will be increased from 100 to 150 days. "A wage of Rs 400 will be provided across states/ union territories nationwide." Disbanding the current NITI Aayog, set up by the BJP regime and establishing again the Planning Commission to draft plans based on the requests of state governments is another assurance the DMK has made. "Measures will be taken to reclaim Kachchatheevu to ensure India's security and to protect the welfare of the fishermen." A mandatory "cooling-off period" of 2 years will be introduced for retired judges and secretaries before they could join private companies or political parties, the manifesto said. Waiving loans and interests for farmers in nationalised and scheduled banks, waiver of educational loans for students, monthly entitlement of Rs 1,000 for all women in every state and formation of <keyword id="21027984" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="state-development-council" source="keywords">State Development Council</keyword> by including Chief Ministers were among the promises made by the DMK. Exemption for Tamil Nadu from the NEET exam and complete removal of toll booths on national highways, forms part of poll promises of the Dravidian party. Further, the DMK said amendments will be made to relevant laws to ensure that state governments, elected by the people, appoint Vice-Chancellors to state-run universities, rather than Governors. Stopping government's divestment from public sector enterprises, implementing the Sethusamudram project, law to ban online gambling, setting up a <keyword id="19895345" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="supreme-court" source="keywords">Supreme Court</keyword> branch in Chennai, providing statehood for <keyword id="19901639" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="puducherry" source="keywords">Puducherry</keyword>, equal funding for all state languages including Tamil, were among the host of other promises made by the DMK. Establishment of Tamil departments in varsities and stopping construction of <keyword id="19950851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mekedatu" source="keywords">Mekedatu</keyword> dam were also promised by the DMK. "The <keyword id="19996334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vishwakarma-scheme" source="keywords">Vishwakarma Scheme</keyword>, introduced by the BJP government to encourage caste-based occupations, will be restructured on the basis of social justice."

The petition to ban TikTok contended that the content on the social network platform “was containing degrading culture and encouraging pornography besides containing explicit disturbing content and causing social stigma and medical health issue between teens.” The bench, led by Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice SS Sundar, cited inappropriate content, including pornography and accessibility to children as the primary reasons behind the interim order — adding that media outlets should also be prohibited from telecasting videos that are made using TikTok.

Brands are also using influencers on the platform like Baby Ariel and Lisa &amp; Lena, for their promotion campaigns since the app primarily targets users in the age group of 16 to 24 years. In light of the scrutiny around fake news and being called up by the parliamentary committee in preparation of the upcoming general election in India, TikTok <a href="https://inc42.com/buzz/bytedance-pacifies-indian-govt-to-dilute-draft-intermediary-regulations/" data-type="tilCustomLink">appointed</a> Sandhya Sharma as its public policy director. An Indian court has banned TikTok for ‘encouraging pornography’

<ul><li>ByteDance, TikTok’s publisher, is fighting the ban against the app stating that it will only hurt the civil right to free speech. </li><li>TikTok is currently banned in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu for ‘encouring pornography’. </li><li>But, pornography on social networking platforms is an industry wide problem that other companies — like WhatsApp and Instagram — are also struggling with. </li></ul>ByteDance, the Chinese publisher behind turning musical.ly into TikTok, is fighting the ban <a href="http://v">imposed</a> by the <keyword id="6360667" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="madras-high-court">Madras High Court</keyword> in India’s apex judicial institution, the Supreme Court. In petitioning for the ban to be quashed, the mobile app publisher states that ban “amounts to curtailing of the rights of the citizens of India” as per a court filing seen by <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/tiktok-india-court/ban-on-tiktok-app-would-harm-free-speech-chinas-bytedance-tells-indias-supreme-court-idINKCN1RN0MX">Reuters</a>. The plea will be <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/sc-to-hear-on-april-15-plea-challenging-hc-order-to-ban-tiktok-app/article26781547.ece">presented</a> in the Supreme Court on April 15 in front of a judicial bench comprising of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. The court had earlier refused the ‘urgent listing’ of the same plea on April 8. About 39% of the video streaming platform’s 500 million users are from India, most of them between the ages of 16 to 24. Keeping that demographic in mind, the public interest litigation (PIL) filed against TikTok alleged that some of the content on the platform was leaving children vulnerable to sexual predators and encouraging paedophiles. Subsequently, South Indian state of Tamil Nadu issued an interim order to bar any downloads of the mobile app citing that the social network was responsible for ‘<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/tiktok-ban-in-india-for-hosting-porn/articleshow/68720430.cms">encouraging pornography</a>’. The interim order also bans TikTok videos from being shared by media outlets and wants a response from the Central Government around whether or not they will bring in a law similar to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Action (COPPA) in the US before April 16.

 An investigation by the BBC found that hundreds of sexual comments and videos were being shared on TikTok by teenagers and children. And, while the company deleted most of the comments — most of the users are still on the platform despite TikTok’s own regulations against sexual content directed at children. That being said, pornography on social networks in India is an industry wide issue that isn’t specific to TikTok. In fact, banning TikTok will probably only make users shift to other platforms that have the same functionality as there is no dearth of option in the mobile app market. For instance, Instagram — the popular photo sharing app — has been <a href="https://tech.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/mobile/on-instagram-in-india-its-sex-for-sale/67968584">pointed out</a> for facilitating sexual solicitation. And, WhatsApp groups have become the new safe haven for child pornography after India implemented a nationwide porn ban on website that were allegedly hosting indecent videos with underage participants. An <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/probe-finds-child-pornography-in-indian-whatsapp-groups/articleshow/67430347.cms">investigation</a> by AntiToxin Technologies, an Israeli online safety startup, found that hundreds of videos were being shared globally under the cloak of the platform’s end-to-end encryption. TikTok is the second Chinese mobile app with a large Indian user base to face problems in India after the battle royale game, PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds was <a href="http://v">banned</a> in various districts of Gujarat. Banned for hosting porn, TikTok cites damage to free speech in its appeal to India’s Supreme Court

The government in the letter on Monday said that the trailer of the series which was released recently depicts the "<keyword id="1004366" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Eelam">Eelam</keyword> Tamils in a highly objectionable manner". In the letter the state minister said that the Manoj Bajpai-Samantha-starrer not only hurts the sentiments of the Eelam Tamils but also the feelings of the people of Tamil Nadu. MDMK leader Vaiko had on Sunday made a similar plea to both Javedkar and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. Naam Tamilar Katchi leader and actor director Seeman had also called for ban on the series. Mano Thangaraj in the letter said: "Branding Tamil speaking actress Samantha as a "terrorist" in the series was directly an attack on the pride of Tamil population living around the world and no one would tolerate this kind of motivated and mischievous campaign." He also said that the series has already evoked widespread opposition from the people of Tamil Nadu as well as from the political parties in the state. The minister also said that while the Eelam Tamils were struggling for equality, justice, peace and dignity in the island nation, Amazon Prime should not have undertaken such a smear campaign against the community. A robot developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras to help eliminate <keyword id="6390598" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manual-scavenging" source="Orion">manual scavenging</keyword> in India, is all set for field deployment, the institute said on Thursday. Ten units of the robot named '<keyword id="12828292" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="homosep" source="Orion">HomoSEP</keyword>' will be first deployed across Tamil Nadu, and later in Gujarat and Maharashtra. "The septic tank is a poisonous environment, filled with semi-solid and semi-fluid human faecal material that make up about two-thirds of the tank. Hundreds of deaths are reported every year across India, due to manual scavenging in septic tanks despite bans and prohibitory orders," said Prof. Prabhu Rajagopal, from Department of Mechanical Engineering, <keyword id="6356755" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-madras" source="Orion">IIT Madras</keyword>, in a statement. HomoSEP was first developed in 2019 as a final year Masters' project by Divanshu Kumar under the guidance of Prof. Rajagopal. Despite the pandemic-related difficulties over the next couple of years, the IIT Madras researchers collaborated with an IIT Madras-incubated start-up Solinas Integrity Private Limited (now headed by Kumar) to further develop HomoSEP. The path-breaking project was also supported first by several CSR donors over the years. The HomoSEP Robot can homogenise the hard sludge in septic tanks through custom-developed rotary blade mechanism and pump the tank slurry using an integrated suction mechanism. According to a <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/states/tamil-nadu/2019/jul/03/woman-spots-missing-hubby-on-tiktok-reunites-with-him-1998662.html">reports</a>, Jayapradha who hails from Villupuram had filed a complaint about her missing husband Suresh in 2016. Three years later, a relative spotted someone who looked like Suresh and when she checked with Jayapradha it turned out to be Suresh indeed. Jayapradha then alerted Villapuram police who then tracked down Suresh at Hosur. An unhappy Suresh had apparently fled from his home to Hosur. He had taken up the job of a mechanic and was living with a transwoman. However, these are not the only bizarre cases of TikTok reported from the state of Tamil Nadu. Earlier in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/asked-to-stop-using-tiktok-tamil-nadu-woman-kills-self-records-act-on-app-226740">June 2019</a>, a 24-year old woman from Ariyalur took her own life after her husband stopped her from using the app. In Tamil Nadu, the craze for TikTok has not just been a problem with the people but with the government too. The Madras High Court had banned the app in the state stating that the video-sharing app encouraged pornography. It had also said that they will ask the Supreme Court to further support the ban. However, the ban was soon lifted on the condition of quality control.

The state implemented a ban on all kinds of single use plastics and thermocol (polystyrene) including disposable items used for a single time and plastics used for food packaging in hotels in addition to plastics used for packing fresh foods and grains. In an amendment, the state allowed the use of PET bottles on April 11, 2018. However this permit carried a rider that demanded the implementation of buy back depository mechanism and recycling of the disposed plastics by the manufacturers. Himachal Pradesh Himachal Pradesh is yet another state in India that has strictly banned the production and use of single use plastics. The ban on plastic notification was issued in Himachal Pradesh on July 6, 2018. The state implemented a ban on all kinds of disposable plastics and single-use non-biodegradable materials in the state. Due to the strict supervision of the implementation of the said ban, some important cities like Shimla for example were found free of disposable polybags, cups and tumblers. <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword> The ban on plastic by the Telangana state was announced on June 14, 2018. The ban included plastics used in drinking bottles, tetra bottles, single-use straws, Styrofoam tea cups and containers, plastics that are below 50 micron thickness and other kinds of single use plastics. Talking on the ban, a social activist Ramanjaneyulu GV said, "The usage has definitely come down but all the plastic stuff is still there. But people themselves are now reluctant to use them because of environmental concerns."
