All nine persons trapped after a huge fire at an underground hydroelectric power station in Telangana were killed, officials said on Friday. Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao ordered a probe by the CID into the fire. Following the chief minister's direction, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar issued an order appointing CID Additional Director General of Police Govind Singh as the inquiry officer. Singh was asked to conduct a comprehensive inquiry and submit the report to the chief minister. The Chief Minister expressed his deep shock over the fire incident and termed it as "very unfortunate". According to a statement from Chief Minister's Office, he voiced his sorrow over the efforts to rescue the trapped people failing to yield results. All the efforts by rescue workers to save the trapped employees at Telangana State Generation Corporation (<keyword id="2546063" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="TS-GENCO">TS Genco</keyword>) plant at <keyword id="240543" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srisailam">Srisailam</keyword> canal's left bank in Nagarkurnool district were futile. The rescue workers recovered the bodies of five victims. They were identified as Assistant Engineers Mohan Kumar, Uzma Fatima, and Sunder, Divisional Engineer Srinivas Goud and Mahesh, an employee of a battery company. Efforts were on to trace the bodies of the remaining persons. The rescue personnel including those from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were battling thick smoke to retrieve the bodies. Some rescue workers have also reportedly become ill during the rescue operation. Earlier, personnel from the NDRF and experts from the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) joined the rescue operations. The fire, which broke late on Thursday, was brought under control by the firefighters. A short-circuit is believed to have caused the fire at unit one of the underground power house. Of the 30 persons reported to be present at the spot, 15 escaped to safety through a tunnel while six were rescued by rescue personnel. They were admitted to a local hospital. One of the survivors said the sparks were first noticed on a panel. "This was followed by series of explosions. There were utter chaos and we all ran out for safety," he said. Telangana Energy Minister Jagadish Reddy and TS Genco and Transco Chairman and Managing Director Prabhakar Rao rushed to the spot and were overseeing rescue efforts. Reddy said that the accident occurred in the first unit of the power station and four panels were damaged. He said that rescue personnel were unable to enter the tunnel due to thick smoke. "As soon as the fire started, they tried to trip the units but that couldn't happen. So we isolated the 400 KV input and all units were tripped," said Prabhakar Rao. Operations at the power station have been suspended following the incident. The Srisailam dam is located across the Krishna river which serves as the border between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

He said 500 personnel in 25 teams were conducting search operations in Manuguru forest area following a tip off that Maoists sneaked into Telangana from neighbouring Chhattisgarh, when the incident occurred. A fire at an EV showroom has killed 8, several injured while trying to escape

Trade bodies of <keyword id="2981720" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana-State-Road-Transport-Corporation">Telangana State Road Transport Corporation</keyword> (TSRTC) will challenge the state government's decision to sack about 48,000 agitating employees, as and when they are served with dismissal or suspension notices, a union leader said here on Monday. <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword> Mazdoor Union president E Ashwathama Reddy, however, clarified that the agitating workers have not received any dismissal or suspension notice from the government or the management of RTC. ".. There are laws in this country. We have been appointed as per rules. They cannot remove us just like that," Reddy told PTI. "There are courts. We will approach courts if necessary," he said. His statement comes a day after the state government declared the indefinite strike as "illegal" and rejected their demands for a merger with it. Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao had on Sunday said employees who did not join duty before the deadline (6 pm on Saturday) set by the government would not be taken back. "As it is there are less than 1,200 employees in the RTC," he had said indicating that those who have not reported for duty before the deadline, would be losing their jobs. Different employees' and workers' unions of the TSRTC began an indefinite strike on Friday midnight across Telangana on a call given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the corporation, demanding merger of the RTC with the government and recruitment to various posts, among other things. The stir by nearly 50,000 staff entered the third day on Monday with TSRTC buses staying off the roads hampering travel plans of thousands of people during the festive season. The chief minister had directed concerned officials to hire 2,500 private buses to make up for the shortfall of public transport. He also ordered that normal RTC operations be restored in 15 days. New employees should be hired soon and they should give an undertaking that they would not join any trade unions, he added. The Telangana High Court had directed the state government to file a report on October 10 about the arrangements made. It also ordered to serve notices on two RTC unions.

Telangana transport authority fires 48,000 workers without any suspension notice

The government of Telangana has deposited ₹7,411.52 crore into the bank accounts of 62.99 lakh farmers in the state so far under the <keyword id="6423211" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="rythu-bandhu" source="Orion">Rythu Bandhu</keyword> scheme for the coming Rabi season. The investment support under the state's flagship scheme will cover 1,48,23,000 acres across the state, said Agriculture Minister <keyword id="11983590" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="s-niranjan-reddy" source="Orion">S. Niranjan Reddy</keyword>. Among the districts, Nalgonda received the highest assistance of ₹601.74 crore, benefitting 4,69,696 farmers. <keyword id="8596137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="medchal-malkajgiri" source="Orion">Medchal Malkajgiri</keyword> district adjoining Hyderabad received the least assistance of ₹33.65 crore. The amount was deposited in the accounts of 33,452 farmers. Under Rythu Bandhu, the government credits ₹5,000 per acre into the farmers' bank accounts before the beginning of every crop season. For the Rabi season, the disbursement target is ₹7,646 crore. The authorities began depositing the amount in the farmers' accounts in the last week of December. When the scheme was launched in 2018, the state government was providing ₹8,000 per acre per year (for both Rabi and Kharif seasons). The amount was enhanced to ₹10,000 from 2019. He said the state governments should fix the Minimum Support Price (MSP) considering the crop cultivation and other factors in their respective regions and the Centre should procure the entire produce at MSP. He said it was unfortunate that the Centre was doing nothing except declaring MSP and demanded the Union government to implement recommendations of the Swaminathan Committee. "The Centre should bring a change in its approach towards agriculture as 60 per cent of the country's population is dependent on this sector," he said. Rythu Bandhu scheme - Telangana government deposits ₹7,400 crore into the bank accounts of 62 lakh farmers

Four CRPF personnel killed and three injured after colleague opens fire in Chhattisgarh

In yet another tragic incident involving an electric two-wheeler, a 40-year-old man has died after a blast occurred in an e-scooter belonging to Boom Motors while being charged at home. The incident in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, also left the deceased Kotakonda Siva Kumar's wife and two daughters with severe burn injuries. According to multiple reports, the police registered a complaint under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) against the EV maker and a notice was sent to the Boom Motors dealer that sold the e-scooter to Kumar. Kumar, a DTP designer, had bought the e-scooter for nearly Rs 70,000 on April 22. The battery exploded within a day of purchase early on April 23, according to reports. Boom Motors was yet to respond to the deadly incident. Ironically, the EV maker was among those selected under the government's automotive production linked incentive (PLI) scheme. In some good news, the state government in its health bulletin has revealed that 1,661 people have been discharged on July 23, taking the total number of cured people to 39,327 at a recovery rate of 77.3%. "But people should not entertain any fear or anxiety. The government is ready to provide treatment to any number of cases in the state. The visuals of the body being carried in the three-wheeler in total violation of the guidelines for transporting the bodies of COVID-19 victims, went viral on social media on Saturday. The body was seen protruding from both sides of the vehicle as it was kept at the bottom of the rear seat. Neither the autorickshaw driver, said to be a relative of the deceased nor the local municipal employee sitting with him was wearing Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits. Hyderabad MP urges people to undergo COVID-19 test AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday underwent a COVID-19 test to create public awareness in his constituency about the need to undergo the test. He visited the Government Nizamia General Hospital near the historic Charminar to give his samples for testing. "Got my antigen &amp; RT PCR tests done for COVID-19 today. My antigen test results were negative, Alhamdulilah. There are 30 odd centres in the South of Hyderabad where antigen testing is being conducted, I encourage all of you to not hesitate &amp; get tested," he later tweeted. Charminar, Golconda Fort shut after brief re-opening The Charminar and the Golconda Fort, two of Hyderabad's most famous monuments, were re-opened for visitors on Monday, only to be shut again as authorities took a U-turn. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which is responsible for the upkeep of the centrally protected monuments, went back on its decision after the Telangana government opposed their re-opening as both were located close to areas witnessing a spike in Covid-19 cases. Few people had booked their tickets online and were allowed entry but sale of tickets was stopped after local authorities expressed the apprehension that re-opening of the monuments could lead to violation of social distancing and other Covid-19 norms. 2 Hyderabad jewellers' corona deaths create panic among party guests The death of two city jewellers due to coronavirus within five days has led to panic among around 150 people from various walks of life who attended a birthday party thrown by one of them in Hyderabad a few days. A 63-year-old diamond jeweller who had organised the party for his relatives and friends two weeks ago succumbed on Friday. One of his guests, another city jeweller, had died earlier. A leading politician from the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and 11 others who attended the party have since tested positive and are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.As many as 150 people had attended the birthday bash hosted by the jeweller who owns a shop in Himayatnagar area. Many leading jewellers, politicians and prominent people from various walks of life were among the attendees. As new lockdown looms over Hyderabad, migrants head for Andhra With another lockdown looming over Hyderabad, hundreds of people were heading to their native places in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Fearing that they may be stuck in the city if the lockdown was re-imposed, workers and businessmen were returning to be with their near and dear ones. Using whatever mode of transport available to them, the migrants were leaving Hyderabad, which is witnessing a big spike in Covid-19 cases. Majority of those returning home were daily wagers, construction labourers, domestic help and traders. Most of them had returned to Hyderabad after easing of lockdown in May. Biggest single-day jump takes Telangana Covid tally to 18,570 In the biggest surge since the outbreak of Covid-19, Telangana on Thursday registered 1,213 cases, taking the tally to 18,570 cases. With this, Telangana overtook Rajasthan and climbed to the seventh spot in the list of states with most cases. Under fire from different quarters for low testing, the state authorities ramped up the testing. According to the director of public health and family welfare, 5,356 tests were conducted. Covid fight in Telangana gets mired in political slugfest The fight against Covid-19 in Telangana has become mired in a political slugfest between the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government and the opposition parties. With the daily jump in new infections almost touching 1,000 and the state touching a new high with each passing day, the criticism of the government's response to the crisis is also mounting. Public Interest Litigations (PILs) filed by activists and the reprimands received by the government from the High Court has given ammunition to the opposition to attack the government, which claims to be handling the situation effectively and sees a conspiracy by "vested interests" to malign the government and state-run hospitals. The Centre's assessment is that between June 10 and 23, Telangana had the highest positivity rate in India at 27.7 per cent (ratio of people testing positive to number of people tested) and the latest data that Telangana is doing lowest number of tests per 10 lakh population at just 2,356 has also come handy to the opposition. HC asks Telangana govt to spell out stand on online classes The Telangana High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to spell out its stand on the ongoing online classes by private schools and inform it by Friday if any policy on online classes had been framed or not. The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Hyderabad School Students Parents Association, seeking directions to ban online classes. The petitioner argued that conducting online classes before the beginning of an academic year is "illegal". The court was told that the government had not yet issued orders with regard to the beginning of the new academic year. Telangana postpones all common entrance examinations The Telangana government on Tuesday decided to postpone all the Common Entrance Examinations (CETs) for admission to various professional courses in the state, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic. The CETs, including the Telangana State Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (TS EAMCET) 2020 were scheduled to begin from Wednesday. The government conveyed its decision to the Telangana High Court during hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), seeking direction to postpone the examinations. Telangana pauses mass testing in hotspot Hyderabad The health authorities in Telangana on June 25 decided to pause the ongoing mass testing for Covid-19 in Hyderabad and surrounding districts in view of the piling-up of samples in testing laboratories. With 8,235 samples still pending in the labs for testing, the authorities said collection of more samples without testing the pending ones will create problems. Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao had announced on June 14 that 50,000 Covid-19 tests will be done in 30 Assembly constituencies in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. Telangana Coronavirus cases rise to 50,826 – 447 dead and 39,327 cured till July 23

Several coal-fired power plants, including those in the national capital region, are likely to have missed the revised deadline to retrofit equipment to curb air pollution, industry estimates showed.
 A total of 47.95 gigawatts thermal power capacity missed the December 31, deadline to install Flue Gas Desulphurization (FDG) units to minimise SO2 emissions, the estimates prepared by private power producers showed.
 These include coal-fired units in the national capital region.
 Coal-fired power plants, which produce three-quarters of India's electricity, account for some 80 per cent of industrial emissions of sulfur and nitrous-oxides, which cause lung diseases and smog.
 Power plants were asked to install FGD units, which cut emissions of sulfur dioxides, in phases. In all 440 coal-fired plans that produce 166.5 GW have to comply with the regulation by December 2022. More than one-third of these had to retrofit equipment by December 2019.
 The power plants that missed the deadline to cut emission levels across the country included 33 units with a total capacity of 18.12 GW in Haryana, Punjab and <keyword id="6357713" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword>. Another 20 units with a total capacity of 11.3 GW are located in southern states of <keyword id="37102" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword>, <keyword id="68884" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telangana">Telangana</keyword>, and <keyword id="20154" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="tamil-nadu">Tamil Nadu</keyword>, the estimates showed. In addition, 7 units of capacity 8.04 GW operated by private firms located in Haryana and Punjab are expected to miss the deadline, the estimates showed.
 The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) had previously set December 2017 as the deadline for meeting the emission standards but extended it by two years as the country adopted a phased approach for thermal power plants to comply with emission norms, which involve installing FGD units that cut emissions of sulfur dioxides.
 If the plants are not compliant within the December 31, 2019 deadline, CPCB has the authority to take the necessary action as per the law and court guidance, industry sources said.
 The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had on December 7, 2015, brought out new norms for coal-based power stations to cut down emissions of particulate matter (PM10), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) to improve the air quality around power plants.
 To meet the new emission norms, the installation of the FGD system was essential in new as well as existing thermal power plants.
 Sources said a handful of plants had complied with the norm but most have missed the deadline. As many as 267 units, which produce 103.4 GW of power, have to be compliant between December 2019 and February 2022.
 In the national capital region, only two of the 33 coal-fired units, which produce some 12.79 GW of power, have installed FGD units so far. ANZ

Television footage showed pictures of lawmakers coughing, sneezing and holding scarves to their faces. Shouting protesters also broke a glass table and snapped the wire of an official 's microphone.
A few legislators were rushed away in an ambulance while others were given first aid treatment in the assembly.
"The incidents which took place in the house are a big blot on our democracy," Parliamentary Affairs Minister <a class="cite">Kamal Nath</a> told reporters.
"Parliamentary democracy provides for dissent but does not provide for the kind of disruption and attempted violence which we saw today. I feel ashamed that such an incident has taken place."
The furor erupted after Home Minister <a class="cite">Sushilkumar Shinde</a> rose to table a bill for the creation of a new state, Telangana, to be carved out of the southern state of <a class="cite">Andhra Pradesh</a>.
Lagadapati Rajagopal, a legislator from <a class="cite">Andhra Pradesh</a> who was recently suspended by the ruling <a class="cite">Congress </a>party, and who opposes creation of the new state, then unleashed the pepper spray.
<a class="cite">Congress</a> has tried to pass laws in the parliament's last session before a general election due by May, but the house has frequently been adjourned amid rowdy scenes over the creation of Telangana state.
Thursday's antics were the worst and drew criticism from parliamentarians from various parties.
"It is an unprecedented and a disgraceful situation," said <a class="cite">Jaswant Singh</a> of the main opposition <a class="cite">Bharatiya Janata Party</a>.
The bill was tabled but the session broke up soon after. The speaker suspended 17 members of parliament.

According to a press release, the 1.08 minute-long clip features the 'jaathara' sequence from the upcoming film. Steeped in colour and tradition, the teaser sees Arjun's Pushpa Raj decked up in a sari, jewellery and make-up, as he wields a trident and bashes up adversaries to music composer DSP's rousing soundtrack amid the 'jaathara' celebration. The first glimpse of the sequel may have presented the protagonist in a different avatar, but his swag remains the same. "Pushpa 1: The Rise" depicted the rise of a low-wage labourer (Arjun) in the smuggling syndicate of red sandalwood, a rare wood that grows only in the Seshachalam Hills of Andhra Pradesh state. It released in India in association with Muttamsetty Media on December 17, 2021 and went on to become one of the biggest money-spinners of the year earning over Rs 350 crore.
