<ul><li>The use of technology has hit the roof as most people turn to digital services to meet their day-to-day requirements amid the coronavirus pandemic.</li><li>NASSCOM President Debjani Ghosh believes that the lockdown has people — consumers and business owners alike — saying, “technology bacha le (save us)”.</li><li>However, the uptake of technology has also highlighted the digital divide that exists in our society. </li><li>Most of the services available online can only be accessed using smartphones, and people need to speak English or be literate in order to use them effectively.</li></ul>Digital technology has been a saviour for many during the coronavirus pandemic and its accompanying lockdown in India. “They’re saying technology bacha le (save us),” NASSCOM President Debjani Ghosh said during the Big Reset panel with Business Insider India in collaboration with the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). Technology may certainly have been a boon for the 4.35 million people employed in the IT industry, it’s not the same story across the board. Nearly 67.8 million migrant workers — 83.5% of whom are employed in blue-collar jobs, the informal sector — had to “<a href="https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/what-indias-digital-divide-means-for-migrant-workers-in-a-covid19-world-and-beyond-65900/">be allowed to move</a>” back home once the lockdown hit amid the coronavirus pandemic. “India needs a completely different playbook from the west when it comes to technology,” said Ghosh. Technology adoption has become faster — but cutting costs can’t be the only priority The coronavirus pandemic has eroded business opportunities and along the way, it’s been eating away at revenue as well. In the west, technology has, and threatens to, reduced cost by replacing workers via automation so far — in part, due to the ageing population. But that is not something that India can afford given that the median age lies between 23 to 25 years, and around 90 million young people will be flooding in, looking for jobs in another five years. “It’s not a machine versus man story, it’s a machine and human story,” said Ghosh. As of May, more than one-fifth of India’s demographic dividend — 23.48% — was unemployed, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (<a href="https://unemploymentinindia.cmie.com/">CMIE</a>). The massive young population of job seekers is not the only problem “I have always said that Indians take to technology like fish take to water,” said Ghosh during the panel discussion. A lot of middle-class people who did not order groceries online have learnt how to. The same goes for renting houses, booking airline and railway tickets, and even acquiring liquor tokens. But even having access to these facilities is limited to less than half of the Indian population. It’s the first language for only 256,000 people and a second language for 83 million. That doesn’t even scratch the surface of India's 1.3 billion large demographic. Even without the English language becoming a barrier, India’s literacy rate is 74.04% — leaving one-fourth of the population out of its fold. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="76133893" title="BevQ, Kerala’s liquor home delivery app, is ‘on the rocks’ with a 2.1 rating on the Google Play Store" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> For them, digital innovation is far from adequate. “This is not going to something just gonna happen in the next two, three years, four years of ideas and there are going to be conflicts — managing those conflicts is going to be key for that reset,” said Joshi, citing the example of how the Black Lives Matter movement is currently happening in the US. “COVID has struck different sections of society differently no matter where it came from, no matter the origins,” he added. “But the fact is that the marginalized have been struck the hardest and they are the ones who are going to be most feeling the impact,” he added. Technology may be a short-cut to cutting costs, but for the long haul — it may do more harm than good for Indian society at large without a ‘people-centric’ approach. If India does not allow Huawei to participate in India’s 5G network trials, then China may make it more difficult for Indian companies to conduct their business. China is threatening India into using its 5G technology

While there are not many counter-drone technology makers in India, few of these players include state-owned Defence Research &amp; Development Organisation (DRDO), Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), ideaForge and Big Bang Boom Solutions. According to media <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/bsf-it-ministry-companies-border-security-drone-attack-7386310/">reports</a>, there are over 500 companies that can help the country find a solution to its drone problem. All these companies may not make devices to harm or kill drones, but can certainly help in tracking them. There are also several military tech private companies in the country, including Adani Defence &amp; Aerospace and Kadet Defence Systems that make drones for surveillance and technology for other combat purposes; Atindriya Systems provides electronic systems and software solutions for defense, and Trijatta that develops radars and encryption devices for the military. The government of India has been aware of the potential threat that rogue drones could pose in the security of the nation and issued a <a href="https://www.civilaviation.gov.in/sites/default/files/Counter_rogue_drone_guidelnes_NSCS.pdf">National Counter Rogue Drone Guidelines </a>two years ago. The policy highlights that the drone factor should be taken seriously as unmanned aircrafts, consumer drones and do-it-yourself (DIY) drones are readily available over the internet. The policy, referring to the Israel-Lebanon war of 2006, highlights "In certain incidents, the small drones were also armed with explosive ordnance, to convert them into potentially lethal guided missiles, thus demonstrating the growing sophistication with which these potent warriors have found relevance in combat zones." Yet it has found itself short of any large scale counter-drone system. The Jammu attack in itself did not cost much, but it did highlight the urgency to invest in a counter-drone system that could prevent bigger attacks in the long run. In the coming months, the government of India wants to sign multi-million dollar [who’s saying this?] contracts with both domestic and foreign firms to procure these technologies. <div type="image" title="India has limited options for weapons that can take down enemy drones" msid="84836842" hostid="261"></div> The anti-drone technology has a massive headroom to cover Kruthi Aramanamada, head of marketing at ideaForge, explained to Business Insider that counter-drone technology is expensive and fairly new as it came into existence only a decade ago. The technology is not fully matured and there is still a lot of scope of research and development (R&amp;D) in this segment, she added. Meanwhile, Anshuman Tripathi, a drone technology expert who is also a member of the National Security Advisory Board, <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/combating-the-drone-menace-india-needs-to-pick-up-pace-with-anti-drone-measures-1823517-2021-07-03">said</a>, "Drones are still evolving and solutions to handle them are incomplete. It's a matter of a few years when the technology matures and you can standardise equipment as you go forward." Even developed countries like the US, Russia and Israel are <a href="https://theprint.in/opinion/brahmastra/india-needs-to-shop-for-anti-drone-systems-we-are-already-late/688517/">pumping billions</a> of dollars into research and development of both drones and counter-drone systems. However, they have not found a foolproof system for both hard and soft kill as yet. Indian armed forces on a look out for counter-drone systems In June 2020, IAF floated a Request for Information (RFI) for Indian vendors for Counter Unarmed Aircraft System (CUAS), which can be used to bring down the rogue drone. Apart from that, other ministries and departments are also looking to sign such contracts. However, there have not been many insights on who may end up getting such contracts. One of the possible beneficiaries of this spree is likely to be Israel-based company Smart Shooter, a company that has been developing systems to help militaries track and engage moving targets. Indian Navy had placed an order to <a href="https://theprint.in/defence/navy-orders-israeli-smash-2000-plus-systems-to-tackle-drones-more-contracts-in-offing/562955/">procure </a>an unspecified number of Smart Shooter’s SMASH 2000 Rifle Sights in December 2020. However, the Indian Army wasn’t quite impressed with it after their trials in January 2021. They found that the system may work well for the Navy as they work in open terrain, but it is not feasible for other terrains. This highlighted another major challenge among the counter-drone technology — use cases. The counter-drone system is not a ‘one size fits all’ type of solution and has to be customised based on the criticality of the situation, Aramanamada added. The debate between indigenous or foreign technology remains Prof. P B Sujit, adjunct faculty at School of Engineering and Technology at BML Munjal University, said that the current counter-drone tech is limited and mostly sourced or licensed from other countries. He also noted that there are few Indian startups in the segment as well, but the quality of those solutions is undetermined at the moment. “The trust in Indian developed tech is low. With the history of India importing from Israel, it's natural to import this. Moreover Israel has good tech which has been field tested with Palestine stuff... So the confidence levels are right with the Israel tech,” he added. Apart from the Israeli plan, the government is also on a look out for the technology developed by domestic players and foreign public as well as private sector units, drone original equipment manufacturers, defence tech firms and Defence Research &amp; Development Organisation (DRDO). However, it is not being used. The agreement would enable these players to mass-produce the system. Looks like PM Modi’s growing friendship with POTUS Obama is yielding some good results for India. In a latest advancement, the US has updated its policy on gas-turbine engine technology transfer to India. This step would expand the cooperation between the countries, in the production and design of sensitive jet engine components. 
 The announcement of this news was done by US Defence Secretary <keyword id="6696528" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ashton-Carter">Ashton Carter</keyword>, when he met Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar during the latter’s US visit. 
 During the meeting, the two leaders discussed ways and means to move the ambitious <keyword id="2633042" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Defence-Technology-and-Trade-Initiative">Defence Technology and Trade Initiative</keyword> (DTTI) forward. 
 
Talking of the DTTI progress as of now, both leaders expressed satisfaction, and committed themselves to identifying additional projects for possible co-development and co-production of high technology items, which can meet the transformational intent of DTTI. 
 
At the Joint Working Group on Aircraft Carrier Technology Cooperation (JWGACTC), Parrikar and Carter commended positive discussions, especially in the area of Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment (ALRE). The statement said that they look forward that the same progress can be achieved at the second meeting of the JWGACTC in February 2016, which would happen in India. 
 
The leaders were also satisfied with the Jet Engine Technology Joint Working Group (JETJWG), which had a meeting this week in Bengaluru, concluding its 'Terms of Reference' and having productive discussion on cooperation in this area. 
 
Later, as he was interacting with the media, Carter identified DTTI as a very important step in realising the potential that the India-US defence partnership holds. 
 
He also said that he and Parrikar had discussed the progress that has been done in the cooperation on jet engines, and aircraft carrier design and construction, as well as opportunities to collaborate on additional projects of interest. These projects would be undertaken to further Prime Minister Modi's ‘Make in India’ policy. 
 
Parrikar also expressed his desire to further collaborate in the higher-end technologies within the framework of DTTI. 
 
"The assurance I have, and I am confident of that India is placed at a level which would ensure that red tapism is cut. I think this is the biggest take home one can get. We have got a very clear promise and we have been experiencing it that our issues are fast tracked," he told reporters. 
Meanwhile, the US defence industry has welcomed Indian Government’s efforts to make necessary changes in its policies, which would facilitate increased defence manufacturing in the country.

During its annual event in India, Google for India 2019, the company made a few key announcements — a lot of which had to do with bringing new Indic languages to Google apps and their features. "Hindi is the second most used Google Assistant language after English," said Manuel Bronstein, the Vice President of Project Management for Google Assistant. But, it’s not just about the languages but the technology that goes into making the apps possible. Google launched a new products geared towards bringing more people online like Google Assistant for 2G users, Google Research India, Google Pay for Business among others.  Google is launching its first <keyword id="107950" type="TECHNOLOGY" weightage="20" keywordseo="artificial-intelligence">artificial intelligence</keyword> (AI) laboratory in Bangalore — Google Research India — which will be led by Manish Gupta, a renowned scientist. "We believe that India will play a central role in the future development of AI. India has a proud history of computer science research. It is home to a thriving technology ecosystem," said Jay Yagnik, Vice President and Engineering Fellow at Google. Google Research India will collaborate with Indian academic institutions, government and other industry players to explore the potential of AI in India. Yagnik said that more details will be made available by the company in the coming months. Google Search gets a new look The default search engine for most users, Google Search, will also see some changes. For starters, it will be available in three more Indic languages. The search results will also have a more ‘modern look’ where Indic search results will be highlighted more prominently depending on the user's language settings. So, if a user’s default setting is Hindi, then results in Hindi would show up above results in English and other languages. Google Search is also aspiring to become more personalised and contextual to the user using AI. Customise ‘Discover’ Discover videos were limited to English but will also be available in Indic languages now. Users will also have the option to choose their categories of preference so that their discover tab can filter out items that might be relevant. Users can also follow categories directly from a post if and when they come across something that sparks their interest. More languages on Google Lens and BOLO Google Lens translator went live a few weeks go and it now has plans to introduce three additional languages — Tamil, Telugu and Marathi. The translator allows users to point and click a picture of any sign board in a foreign language, and Google Lens will change the text within the picture to a language that the user understands. It can also read the text out loud in the preferred language. BOLO, Google’s speech based reading app that helps kids read, is also bringing on new languages — Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. Google is also collaborating with the Global Book Alliance to bring in more books in regional languages onto the platform as well as collaborating with local Indian publishers. Google is adapting its technology for India and its many languages

PayPal launches two technology Innovation Labs in India

 The project, in its entirety, will include three phases where, whichever route is chosen, will consist of phase I and phase II. Previously, Hyperloop One, the only company to have presented a working Hyperloop system so far, had also proposed routes and plans for the country. Dell Technologies strengthens its presence in the gaming segment with new lineup

<ul><li>India slipped ten places in the <keyword id="2040615" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Global-Competitiveness-Index">Global Competitiveness Index</keyword>, ranking at 68.</li><li>The country’s ICT technology innovation capacity is growing but isn’t backed by investment in human capital.</li><li>India’s overall score is relatively stable but countries ranked near India demonstrated more growth.</li></ul>Getting more people online has been the goal of the current Indian government since its rise to power. Fall in the price of 3G and 4G data has also made it more affordable for people to connect to the internet. Despite these strides, India fell 10 places in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) <a href="http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_TheGlobalCompetitivenessReport2019.pdf">Global Competitiveness Index</a>, ranking at 68. India’s slip in the rankings is only partially because of the fall in its score — a drop of 0.7 points. The report notes that a greater factor may have been because other countries — which were previously ranked lower on the Global Competitiveness Index — have shown faster improvement, especially when it comes to the adoption of information and technology. India has improved significantly since 2017, but information and communication technology (ICT) continues to remain a challenge due to underlying factors like women participation in the workforce and weak workers’ policies. India and other emerging economies are also showing signs of stagnation and slowdown since their growth has largely been ‘anaemic’ — or unequal. India’s mixed results More ICT means more innovation, according to the WEF. In order to deal with the growth of their innovation capacity, emerging economies — like China, India and Brazil — need to strengthen their skills and labour market. Technological integration is good on paper. But, without human capital investment, it remains largely inadequate. India performed well in terms of innovation, ranking 35th in the world. But, it falls short when it comes to other foundational enablers of competitiveness on the Global Competitiveness Index. The one thing that does work in India’s favour is its market size. Even its financial sector ranks better than most other countries despite the high delinquency rate — that’s not to say that the banking system has not weakened. On the other hand, India ranks as low as 107th when it comes to skills, and is at 101th in terms of product market efficiency. The country’s labour market needs transformation in order to protect its workers and also encourage female participation in the world place — which is abysmally low at a rank of 128 — according to the WEF. This is also reflected the level of inequality in India. Income share of the top 10% in the country is higher than levels seen in the US, China and even Russia. India’s progress was good — Others were better The East Asia and Pacific region is the most competitive in the world. Countries like Singapore, Japan and Taiwan lead the charge on the rest of the world. In fact, Singapore holds the highest rank on the Global Competitive Index. But India lags woefully behind, according to the WEF. Countries ranked near India all show small, but significant improvements in their score. Vietnam, for instance, is ranked 67 and moved up 10 places in the index showing 3.5 points of improvement. Azerbaijan made an even greater jump of 11 places even though its competitive score only increased by 2.7 points to rank at 58. Turkey was able to maintain its rank at 61 but only because its performance improved by 0.5 points. One of the reasons for its improved competitiveness is the diffusion of the Internet across the country. Turkey’s also has more women participating in the workforce and has strengthened workers’ rights. Colombia, 57th on the Global Competitive Index, moved up three places brushing up its score by 1.1 points. India vs BRICS Among the BRICS nations, China is the best performer, maintaining its 28th position and outranking the Russian Federation at 43. That’s 40 places and 14 points ahead of India on the Global Competitive Index. China’s performance is almost at par with OECD standards. In fact, its ICT adoption outperforms all 25 of the OECD countries. South Africa, also moved up 7 places in the Global Competitive Index with a score improvement of 1.7 points ranking at 60.
