The company's net profit increased 2.2% sequentially to ₹1,369 crore in October to December as compared to expectation of ₹1,454 crore consensus estimate of analysts tracked by <a href="https://www.bloombergquint.com/business/tech-mahindra-q3-results-profit-rises-22-but-misses-estimates-attrition-inches-up">Bloomberg</a>. While revenue is in line with expectations, weaker than expected margins and slower hiring is a concern, says analysts <a href="https://twitter.com/CNBCTV18Live/status/1488700416942829568">reportedly</a> at UBS investment banking firm. It also maintained a ‘sell’ rating on the stock with a target price of ₹1,260 per share. Adding to it, more employees are leaving Tech Mahindra than TCS and Wipro in an industry that is struggling with a high attrition rate. However, Tech Mahindra is not the only firm struggling with high attrition, every other IT firm is getting more resignations than ever before. More employees are leaving Infosys, Tech Mahindra than TCS and Wipro

<ul><li>One of the top five IT services companies, <keyword id="43217" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tech-mahindra" source="Orion">Tech Mahindra</keyword> reported a 25% decline in net profit for April-June quarter.</li><li>The management attributed the decline in profitability to rising employee benefits costs, which includes promotions and salary hikes.</li><li>However, high spending towards retaining employees by giving hikes and promotions has paid off the firm’s attrition rate, which has come down to 22% from 24% last quarter.</li><li>Tech Mahindra’s attrition is still better than peers Infosys (28.4%) and TCS (23.3%).</li></ul>A fourth of Tech Mahindra’s first quarter revenues were eaten up by employee expenses, pushing its profits down by 25% on a sequential basis. The company’s CEO C P Gurnani says that this wage hike has reduced its attrition by 2% from last quarter, and predicts that it will reduce by another 4% in six months. But when asked for specifics, he said, “Attrition is as hard to predict as death,” at the post-earnings press conference. Its total income grew marginally by around 3% to ₹12,830 crore sequentially. Its constant currency revenue growth stood at 3.5%, the company said in its press release. “We are confident that we will be presenting to you continuously over the next few quarters industry leading growth. We are also confident that we will have an opportunity to work on the profitability levers,” said Gurnani. High spending towards retaining employees by giving hikes and promotions has aided as Tech Mahindra’s attrition rate has come down to 22% from 24% last quarter. If it’s able to keep up with its predictions, in the next two quarters, it could come down to 18%. Attrition is as hard to predict as death says C P Gurnani after TechM loses profits to wage hikes

Cognizant is giving positive vibes to the Indian IT industry with strong revenue growth and an improving attrition rate

The global IT firm beat expectations with June quarter strong performance as revenue was $125 million more than the high-end of the company’s guidance range. However, the company’s attrition rate is at 31%, the highest among peers, compared to 21% in the previous quarter. This led the company to hire more than 3 lakh employees. Cognizant guidance gets peer stocks like HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra buzzing

Citing poor increments and slow career growth, <keyword id="403932" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-IT-professionals">Indian IT professionals</keyword> want the government to ease the resignation process, which as of now demands a notice period of three months. 
 Over 28,000 professionals have signed an <keyword id="744065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-petition">online petition</keyword>, in which they have asked the labour ministry to reconsider this clause.

"The IT companies try to stop employees for three months, but the next company is not ready to wait for three months. So mostly people go jobless for a couple of months and then look for a new post," an IT professional told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/tech/ites/angry-with-poor-pay-hike-and-lack-of-growth-indian-techies-push-government-to-make-resigning-easier/articleshow/57419754.cms">ET</a>, requesting anonymity. 
 
The reasons these professionals cite re believable, given that they are expected to receive low single-digit increments for the next financial year. 
 
Tech Mahindra, for example, has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/tech-mahindra-is-not-giving-appraisals-to-its-senior-employees-heres-why/articleshow/56998339.cms">suspended the salary revision</a> process for employees who hold more than six years of experience unless management approves so. 
 
Experts from the Human Resource sector feel that the IT companies use these three-month notice periods to tackle high attrition rates, avoiding employees to switch owing to marginal hikes offered by other companies. 
 
Other than this, they also make use of these notice periods to find replacements, particularly to replace highly skilled employees.

<ul><li>Earnings season will begin next week with the results of major IT companies -- TCS on April 11 and Infosys on April 13.</li><li>Digital transformation deals continue to boost IT sector’s growth along with rupee depreciation in the recent months benefiting the sector.</li><li>However, profit margins of these companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring.</li></ul>The March quarter earnings season will begin next week with the results of major information technology (IT) companies such as Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) on April 11 and Infosys on April 13. Most analysts believe March is a seasonally weak quarter for IT companies and they expect moderate earnings growth amid margin pressures. The profit margins of IT companies are expected to be under pressure because of increase in employee salaries and record hiring. “Sequential growth for Indian IT will be moderate in March 2022 quarter and in line with historical seasonal trends. Margins will remain under pressure resulting from elevated wage increases, onsite as well as offshore,” said Kotak Institutional Equities. The entire IT sector is struggling to retain employees including top five companies. Nonetheless, we believe double-digit growth is feasible for many,” said a report by Kotak Institutional Equities. Higher employee cost and shortage of skilled talent will remain the key challenges in the short term for IT companies. The churn of employees at Indian IT companies is settling down as the likes of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), <keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword>, HCL Technologies, <keyword id="10862" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wipro">Wipro</keyword>, and Tech Mahindra are witnessing some of the lowest attrition rates that they’ve seen in a while. “A large amount of lateral hiring happens because of attrition replacement. If I’m losing 20 people, I have to hire 20 people. To that extent, lateral hiring will come down,” HCL Tech CHRO Apparao VV told Business Insider. But, it is yet to make up its mind about the coming year. “We have not yet finalised. We’re doing a bottom-up exercise where we ask each of the businesses, what is the growth they see. Part of it will be based on form booking and a part of it will be based on anticipation — past number. With attrition at an all-time low of 8.9%, India’s biggest IT firm TCS too has been focused on onboarding freshers since July. “We started onboarding freshers and increased our recruitment globally in Q2 in anticipation of the growth trajectory,” said TCS CHRO, Milind Lakkad, during the second-quarter earnings call. The company is looking to onboard 10,000 employees over the next year in the US amid the uncertainty around H-1B visa regulations. Over the last five years, TCS has hired around 21,500 employees in the country in its efforts to localise. Wipro, which recently saw a change in leadership with Thierry Delaporte at the helm, did not disclose any exact numbers but does have ‘robust’ hiring plans for the second half of the current fiscal. “Very robust hiring this quarter, both laterally and campuses. We continue to see the same momentum going forward,” said the company’s CHRO Saurabh Govil during the second-quarter earnings call. He added that given the company’s current growth momentum, hiring — laterally and via campuses — is an important part of managing that growth. This includes hiring across geographies, including India and in the new business areas, especially cloud and cybersecurity, where the demand lies. India’s IT sector is among the first to recover from the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Hiring freshers, rather than laterally, allows companies to pick up talent that’s relatively cheaper. It’s also easier to train fresh minds in-house for specific skills, especially because they are in short supply in the market.
