Brar said the booking momentum in September was good, which is a strong indication for October. "And this time, all festivals are in October..we expect about 5-10 per cent sales growth during the period as compared to last year," he added. The stock of the company declined 4.09 per cent to trade at Rs 1,097.65 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). On the BSE, scrip of Tata Motors dropped 3.69 per cent to trade at Rs 1,102.40 per piece. The 30-share BSE Sensex tumbled 767.65 points or 0.94 per cent to trade at 81,099.90, while NSE Nifty fell 206.70 points to 24,804.20. On Thursday, Tata Motors reported an 11 per cent year-on-year dip in total sales at 71,996 units in July. The company had sold 80,633 units in July 2023. Its total domestic sales dipped 11 per cent and stood at 70,161 units last month as against 78,844 units in the year-ago period. The auto major said its consolidated net profit increased 74 per cent to Rs 5,566 crore in the June 2024 quarter, aided by robust performance by Jaguar Land Rover as well as domestic business. It had posted a net profit of Rs 3,203 crore in the April-June quarter of last fiscal. The company's total income increased to Rs 1,09,623 crore for the period under review against Rs 1,03,597 crore in the June quarter in FY24. On a standalone basis, the automaker said its net profit stood at Rs 2,190 crore compared to a net loss of Rs 64 crore in the year-ago period. Total income rose to Rs 18,851 crore in the first quarter of the current fiscal against Rs 16,132 crore in the corresponding period of FY24. Jaguar Land Rover reported a revenue of 7.3 billion pounds, the best first-quarter revenue on record, up 5 per cent versus the June quarter of FY24. The company also said its board has approved the Scheme of Demerger of Tata Motors Ltd (TML) into two separate listed companies. As part of the scheme, TML will demerge its commercial vehicle undertaking, involving the commercial vehicle business (all the assets, liabilities and employees relating to the commercial vehicle business) and all its related investments, into TMLCV. Further, pursuant to the scheme, the existing passenger vehicle business in TMPV, will be merged into TML, the existing listed entity. Upon the scheme becoming effective, both TMLCV and TML will be renamed, resulting in two separate listed entities. Tata Motors shares slump 4% on poor sales data

Peter Rawlinson, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-ceo-comments-tesla-losing-its-way-elon-musk-distracted-2024-5">CEO of Lucid Motors and a former VP of engineering at Tesla</a>, spoke on the Cars and Culture podcast last week that most of the <keyword id="19895203" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Electric-Vehicles" source="keywords">electric vehicles</keyword> on offer "frankly suck." Asked whether EVs in the US have a perception problem, Rawlinson said the problem was "not perception, but reality." "I think many people have driven EVs that frankly suck. I know because I drive all the competition," he said. "I think that the American public has been ill-served by underwhelming EVs," Rawlinson added. Rawlinson, who previously worked for Elon Musk and helped build Lucid, became CEO of Lucid in 2019. The EV startup is gearing up to launch its new electric SUV, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/luvid-gravity-suv-details-photos-tesla-topping-range-interior-cargo-2023-11" target="_blank">$94,900 Gravit</a>y, with production expected to start by the end of this year. Lucid has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-vs-lucid-which-is-better">touted its industry-leading technology</a> but continues to be stuck in the so-called EV "valley of death." The company reported revenues of $200 million in the most recent quarter and a net loss of $992 million. In August, it secured another $1.5 billion in investment from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, its majority shareholder. Meanwhile, EV sales growth in the US has slowed this year amid a dearth of affordable electric options. According to Kelley Blue Book, the average price of a new electric vehicle in the US in September was $56,000, compared to $48,397 for combustion-engine vehicles. <h2>China races ahead</h2>US automakers are grappling with the challenge posed by Chinese EV companies like BYD and Xiaomi, who have rolled out affordable electric vehicles packed with advanced technology. While these companies are unable to sell their cars in America due to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-criticizes-biden-plan-to-ban-chinese-tech-in-cars-2024-11">cripplingly high tariffs</a>, they are putting Western companies under pressure in China and attracting plaudits in the US, with Ford CEO <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ford-ceo-driving-xiaomi-su7-electric-vehicles-ev-2024-10">Jim Farley praising Xiaomi's SU7 EV</a>. Rawlinson previously described China's automakers <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lucid-chinese-automakers-years-behind-tesla-electric-vehicles-elon-musk-2024-5">as "years behind" the likes of Tesla</a> in terms of core EV technology. Speaking on the Cars and Culture podcast, he said Chinese companies like BYD were ahead of US rivals in battery chemistry and assisted driving technology — but said they benefit from an "uneven playing field" due to government subsidies. "I think the Chinese do have a fundamental advantage because when the government says go, they all go in the same direction instead of arguing with each other," Rawlinson said. A study from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies think tank, released earlier this year, found that China has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-electric-vehicles-government-subsidies-win-ev-race-byd-tesla-2024-6">provided at least $230 billion in support</a> to electric vehicle makers such as BYD since 2009. "I'd say they're still behind in terms of the core EV powertrain technology, but don't underestimate them," Rawlinson added. During the meeting at the Tata headquarters, the American company evinced interest in buying out the business after the not-so-warm response to the hatchback car for over a year since launch. Soon, top Tata officials, led by Ratan Tata, went to the US for a further meeting, which lasted about three hours. According to a person who attended the meeting, officials from Ford "humiliated" the visiting Indians at the meeting in Detroit. "You do not know anything, why did you start the passenger car division at all," the Ford officials told their guests, and spoke about doing a favour to the Indian company by buying out the latter's business. The team decided to return to India immediately after the meeting, which was described as "humiliating" by the person present. On the 90-minute flight taking them back to New York, a sombre Ratan Tata spoke very few words. "This was in 1999 and come 2008, the same Ford's <keyword id="19916884" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="JLR" source="keywords">JLR</keyword> was bought by us. Ford chairman Bill Ford thanked Tata, saying, 'You are doing us a big favour by buying JLR'," Pravin Kadle, a long-time group veteran, had recounted during a public event a few years ago. In 2008, the Tata Group bought the iconic brands from making sedans and sports utility vehicles in a USD 2.23-billion deal from Ford. Post-acquisition, the Tata Group has scripted one of the most fabulous turnarounds in the auto industry and has been able to position the marquee British brands as formidable entities in the fiercely competitive global car market. Even as Tata Motors has come a long way and gained market share in India, it continues to earn a significant part of its revenues from the JLR.

Hyundai retakes the second spot from Tata Motors, records its highest-ever sales

The Mumbai-based auto major on Monday launched a midsize SUV coupe <keyword id="20400827" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Curvv" source="keywords">Curvv</keyword> with petrol and diesel powertrains with a price starting at Rs 9.99 lakh. The company has already unveiled the electric version of the model in August. The model would be competing with the likes of <keyword id="2883300" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai-Creta" source="Orion">Hyundai Creta</keyword>, <keyword id="7720018" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kia-Seltos" source="Orion">Kia Seltos</keyword>, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, and Honda Elevate, among others. "Curvv is being positioned in the fast-growing, mid-size SUV segment, which is roughly 16% of the whole industry (passenger vehicle) size. If translated into numbers, it would be like 7 lakh units a year," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle MD Shailesh Chandra told PTI in an interaction. The segment is very competitive with various brands having a product already in the market, he noted. Therefore, if one enters this segment so late, then it will have to think of coming up with a slightly differentiated approach, Chandra said. "And that was the thinking behind Curvv, which comes with an SUV coupe body style. We saw that this was gaining popularity globally, especially in the premium or luxury segment," he added. Further, he said: "So we thought, why don't we bring this into the crowded segment as a fresh, refreshing kind of a body style." When asked about sales expectations from the model, Chandra said: "We have come with this model, with the best in class features. It's a differentiated product in this and therefore we think it is going to perform well." He noted that Tata Motors currently has a market share of around 19% in the SUV segment and expects the new model to help it grow further. "We'll gain from where we are. The market leader in SUVs would be, say, 21-22 %, so it's a crowded segment. It's not that one player is holding the roost here. "All the top 3-4 players in SUVs are around the same market share figure," Chandra said. He noted that the company is also looking to enhance its dealer network by around 10-15 % in the next one year. "We have a very aggressive plan of expanding dealerships. We will need to have an enhanced network. We will have to make them bigger, also in size. And therefore, for EVs, we have started separation of the outlets. So there will be expansion in touchpoints, not only on the sales side, but big time on the service side as well," Chandra said. <keyword id="20400828" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-curvv" source="keywords">Tata Curvv</keyword> comes with two petrol and a diesel engine option. "The introduction of the Curvv further enhances our SUV portfolio as a comprehensive mid-SUV product with multiple powertrains, several first-in-segment features, a brand new capable architecture - ATLAS and Level 2 ADAS," Chandra said. Besides Curvv, Tata Motors sells models like Punch, Nexon, Harrier and Safari in the domestic market.
