<ul class="summary-list"><li>The world has averted a "true apocalypse" from the <keyword id="11896310" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-crisis" source="Orion">climate crisis</keyword>, said writer David Wallace-Wells.</li><li><keyword id="12195931" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="renewable-energy" source="Orion">Renewable energy</keyword> is now cheaper than fossil fuels and attracting larger investment growth.</li></ul><p>Let's be honest: There's no time like the present to have climate anxiety. Millions of people are sweltering across the Northern Hemisphere as extreme heat hits countries from the UK and Spain to Tunisia and China. </p><p>These lethal heat waves and other natural disasters will become more frequent unless countries and corporations shift away from fossil fuels and deploy renewable energy at a rapid clip. That just got harder in the US, where $300 billion in tax credits for solar and wind projects and energy storage stalled in Congress.</p><p>But even David Wallace-Wells, a New York Times writer who authored "The Uninhabitable Earth" that warns we aren't nearly alarmed enough about the perils of the climate crisis, can see some bright spots behind the bad headlines. </p><p>Wallace-Wells, <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-world-is-on-fire-heres-a-realistic-plan-to-save-humanity/id1594471023?i=1000570514293">on a recent episode of "Plain English" with Derek Thompson</a>, discussed how solar and wind power are now cheaper than fossil fuels and how humans have managed to "pull ourselves out of the range of a true apocalypse."</p><h2><strong>The price of solar and wind power has dropped dramatically in the past decade</strong></h2><p>Solar power is now the cheapest electricity in history and the majority of the world's population lives where it costs less to produce new power from solar and wind than from dirty energy, Wallace-Wells said, citing the International Energy Agency. That was true even before coal and gas prices soared this year because of inflation and Russia's invasion of Ukraine. </p><p>The IEA in June <a href="https://www.iea.org/news/record-clean-energy-spending-is-set-to-help-global-energy-investment-grow-by-8-in-2022">also reported that investment</a> in clean energy is growing faster than investment in fossil fuels globally. Climate experts anticipate spending on <keyword id="12337458" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="renewables" source="Orion">renewables</keyword> to surpass $1.4 trillion this year, accounting for nearly 75% of the overall growth. That is still well short of what's needed to keep global warming below catastrophic levels, the report said, but it's a sign spending is headed in the right direction. </p><p>Another caveat is that most of that investment is in wealthy economies, with some exceptions such as solar in India. Clean-energy spending in the developing word is still stuck at 2015 levels. </p><p>Still, the price drop has created "a whole new paradigm" because it means the poorest countries can at least plan for a renewable future, Wallace-Wells said. </p><h2><strong>The scariest warming predictions have been scaled back</strong></h2><p>Some of the most extreme warming scenarios that scientists warned about as recently as a few years ago now seem implausible, Wallace-Wells said. Some earlier research had forecast that the planet could warm by up to 5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels under a business-as-usual future. </p><p>That has been revised down to nearly 3 degrees by the end of the century — a threshold climate scientists still warn is catastrophic. Coral reefs — which millions of people rely on for food, jobs, and flood protection — would die, for example, and natural disasters that historically struck once a century would hit annually.</p><p>"What that means is that we have pulled ourselves out of the range of true apocalypse and we are now staring at a future in which we are going to be dealing with huge climate challenges and suffering, but in which a lot remains up to us to determine how we navigate that landscape," Wallace-Wells said. </p><p>"The climate impacts are only half the story, and the human response is the other one," he added. "We're not engineering a great human response right now, but at least it's possible." </p><h2><strong>The US has slashed emissions by more than 17% without major climate policies </strong></h2><p>A shift away from coal and its replacement with natural gas, which produces half as much carbon dioxide as coal when burned, largely drove the trend.</p><p>Now the challenge is deploying more renewable energy, <a href="https://www.eia.gov/tools/faqs/faq.php?id=427&amp;t=3">which only generates 20% of US power</a>, in part because wind and solar require a lot of land. Wallace-Wells said local communities that don't want these kinds of projects in their backyards are still resisting the change.</p>

We take cover, run to safety, or move to higher ground. But <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nceh/toolkits/extremeheat/default.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">what to do about extreme heat</a>?</p><p>Heat is the <a href="https://www.epa.gov/climate-indicators/climate-change-indicators-heat-related-deaths" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">leading weather-related killer</a> in the US, even though most of these deaths are preventable. That's because, like a driver speeding down a highway, many of us fail to appreciate the risks we're facing.</p><p>And as the planet warms, it's as if more of us are punching the gas pedal. </p><p>Extreme heat demands — and is now getting — greater attention because human activity is dialing Earth's thermostat ever higher. Areas that <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jun/13/phoenix-arizona-heatwave-daytime-night" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">routinely sizzle</a>, like Phoenix, are <a href="https://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/arizona-environment/2021/10/07/phoenix-hires-heat-officer-cool-city-ever-warming-future/6029086001/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">appointing heat czars</a> to orchestrate urban-cooldown efforts.</p><p>Cities and states are experimenting with plans to use <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/naming-heat-waves-save-lives/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">severity scales to quantify heat waves</a> and to name life-threatening heat outbreaks, as Seville, Spain, <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/seville-launches-world-rsquo-s-first-program-to-name-and-rank-heat-waves/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">now does</a>. It's all an effort to generate the kind of attention we might normally reserve for tornadoes and hurricanes.</p><p>It's attention that's deserved: The dangers from extreme heat can bubble over in minutes or across several days. Those at higher risk include <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/updates/upd-07-02-18.html#:~:text=Working%20outside%20can%20produce%20heat,up%20safety%20glasses%2C%20and%20dizziness." target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">people who work outdoors</a>, those who <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/cowboys/2022/07/11/marion-barber-cause-death-dallas-cowboys-running-back-heat-stroke/10033698002/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">exercise under extreme conditions</a>, older people, and those who are poor.</p><p>The most serious harms from heat waves are often <a href="https://www.epa.gov/climate-indicators/climate-change-indicators-heat-waves" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">linked to higher overnight temperatures</a>. That's because when it's harder for people to find respite from daytime extremes, their bodies have to work overtime to shed heat.</p><p>This is part of why heat has, in some years, killed more people in the US than <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r2/recreation/safety-ethics/?cid=FSEPRD494289" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and lightning combined</a>. <a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/heatrelated-illnesses-heat-cramps-heat-exhaustion-heat-stroke" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Heat-related illnesses include</a> heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and <keyword id="12473634" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="heat-stroke" source="Orion">heat stroke</keyword>. Hot weather can also <a href="https://www.geisinger.org/health-and-wellness/wellness-articles/2017/04/30/22/01/summertime-heat-can-be-hard-on-your-lungs" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">inhibit breathing</a> and <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/heat-is-hard-on-the-heart-simple-precautions-can-ease-the-strain-201107223180" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">put those with heart conditions at risk</a>.</p><p>When Jane Gilbert became the <a href="https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/chief-heat-officers" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">first chief heat officer</a> for Miami-Dade County last year, she commissioned studies to understand who in the region was most vulnerable. The efforts found that areas with the highest land-surface temperatures saw greater instances of emergency-department visits for heat-related illnesses.</p><p>Sections of the county with a dearth of <keyword id="6355381" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="trees" source="Orion">trees</keyword> tended to be hotter — and poorer. Gilbert said areas with higher incomes, by contrast, often had more prolific tree cover. </p><p>"They almost look like the same map," she said, referring to the overlap between wealth and arboreal plenty.</p><p>To narrow the tree gap, Miami-Dade County is working to boost its tree canopy from about 20% to 30% by 2032. Part of the effort will target areas with less greenery.</p><p>The county <a href="https://www.miamidade.gov/global/service.page?Mduid_service=ser1467835324112359" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">gives away two trees a year</a> to homeowners who want to help in the <a href="https://www8.miamidade.gov/global/recreation/milliontrees/home.page" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">green-up plan</a>. The program includes instructions for planting and care. Still, not all of the young trees will thrive. Progress in boosting Miami-Dade County's tree coverage <a href="https://www.wlrn.org/news/2021-11-16/miami-dade-county-florida-extreme-heat-season-cop26-tree-canopy" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">has proven difficult</a> because some trees, new and old, are damaged in storms or are lost when land is cleared for development. Yet drawing in everyday citizens to the effort is essential, Gilbert said, because the county can't otherwise reach its goal.</p><p>"We only own a very small portion of the land. And if we're going to get to 30% tree canopy, we need private-sector involvement in that. We're never going to get there without all partners." </p><p>Miami-Dade County gives away about 2,000 trees at each of its adopt-a-tree events and, since 2001, has handed out more than 215,000 of them.</p><p>Taking steps to cool so-called <a href="https://scied.ucar.edu/learning-zone/climate-change-impacts/urban-heat-islands" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">urban heat islands</a> is wise because we'll likely face more hot days.</p><p>Noboru Nakamura, a professor in the department of geophysical sciences at the University of Chicago, <a href="https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2021GL097699" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">identified unusual behavior in the jet stream</a> that facilitated last summer's historic <keyword id="11947988" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="heat-wave" source="Orion">heat wave</keyword> in the Pacific Northwest in which more than 1,000 people died in the US and Canada. The phenomenon is called atmospheric blocking, and it involves the jet stream stalling over a region.</p><p>"When this happens, weather stops changing regularly," Nakamura said. "This is typically how extreme heat and flooding conditions occur."</p><p>While extreme-heat events are likely to increase, what's less understood is the role Earth's atmospheric machinery might play, he said.</p><p>"You may have some unexpected behavior of the weather systems and internal workings of the atmospheric circulation," Nakamura said, "which is chaotic."</p><p><em>Insider is seeking nominations for its first Climate Action 30 list, which identifies the top 30 global leaders working toward climate solutions.</em></p><p><em>Tell us about someone who you believe is doing some of the most impactful or promising work to tackle the global <keyword id="11896310" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="climate-crisis" source="Orion">climate crisis</keyword>: </em></p>

Extreme heat causes more deaths than storms, fires, and floods in the US. Cities are responding by naming heat czars and looking for ways to cool urban areas.

<p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/financing-a-sustainable-future-2022"></a></p><div type="image" title="Wind turbines spin amid dark weather clouds in Ireland" height="3400" width="5100" msid="92369546" hostid="261" sizebytes="299376"></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Many companies are taking action toward a more sustainable future, but are not taking the step to report on their efforts and outcomes.</li><li>There are concrete steps that companies can take to start disclosing their <keyword id="12011554" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="esg" source="Orion">ESG</keyword> initiatives and data.</li></ul><p>In 2018, Rachel Hutchisson, vice president of global social responsibility at <keyword id="14255148" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="blackbaud" source="Orion">Blackbaud</keyword>, a technology company that makes cloud software for non-profits and other organizations, approached her CEO about putting out a sustainability report.</p><p>The company had a long history of philanthropy and volunteerism, but nothing was tracked or shared with the public. Reporting, Hutchisson felt, would help Blackbaud show its investors, employees, and customers the progress it was making around environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, while also helping it define its ESG identity.</p><p>"We were doing all this work to support what we sell and we're telling inspiring customer stories, but we weren't talking about us and showing off that we're a place that really cares," she said. "I wanted to do a social responsibility report to make sure our leaders really understood what we were doing."</p><p>Blackbaud released its first report that year, which Hutchisson admits was "pretty light," but it's grown to become a multifaceted document that outlines everything from the way it gives back to its communities to diversity and inclusion metrics to how its reduced its carbon footprint. As Blackbaud has grown its <keyword id="14255147" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="esg-reporting" source="Orion">ESG reporting</keyword> program, so too have other companies, both private and public. According to Deloitte's <a href="https://www.iasplus.com/en-ca/news/regulations/2021/s-p-500-and-esg-reporting">Center for Audit Quality</a>, 95% of S&amp;P 500 companies have publicly available ESG information.</p><p>While a lot of companies are embracing ESG — many are developing social purposes, hiring more diverse employees, and reducing their environmental footprint — reporting takes their actions to the next level. Like financial reporting, it includes data stakeholders can use to see if a company is following through on its ESG commitments, which then helps hold the company accountable, said Marc Siegel, EY Americas corporate and ESG reporting thought leader.</p><p>While reporting is just good practice, he said, more people are demanding to see actual metrics. EY found that 90% of investors want consistent reporting of ESG performance measures, while employees and management want reporting to help them run their businesses better. Regulators are also moving to mandate the inclusion of some ESG metrics within a public company's financial reporting.</p><p>"There are a lot of reasons to report, but if you think about what gives a company a valuation it's a multiple on earnings, which includes a bunch of stuff that's ESG even if it's not labeled as such," Siegel said. "Companies get multiples because of how they're going to react to a lower carbon economy, the productivity of their employees, their belief in management. That's E, S, and G. It helps all stakeholders understand the progress you're making as a business."</p><div type="image" title="Headshot of Rachel Hutchisson, vice president of global social responsibility at Blackbaud" height="768" width="768" msid="92369547" hostid="261" sizebytes="28158"></div><h1><strong>How to start reporting </strong></h1><p>Creating an ESG reporting program involves a lot of conversation, developing a deeper understanding of your business, detailed data-collecting and more. Fortunately, you don't have to do it all at once, Siegel said, who suggests starting small and expanding as time goes on. You have to start somewhere, though: Here are seven steps to get you going</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">1. Think about why you want to report</strong></h2><p>Start by thinking about why you want to report progress and who you want to report it to, said Sandy Peters, the CFA Institute's head of financial reporting policy. "Do you want to give your investors what they want? Is it going in a securities filing document? Is it for employees?" she said. "ESG reporting is about communication so think about who you want to communicate to and why you want to report in the first place." A lot of public companies, for instance, only report because ratings agencies are now baking ESG issues into their scores, while others know it's important to their customers.</p><h2><strong>2. Do an internal ESG audit</strong></h2><p>Companies may already be participating in ESG activities, whether they know it or not. Many businesses, for instance, give employees time off to volunteer, support causes their staff care about, or have workplace health and safety policies in place. When Hutchisson began her reporting journey, she started looking at what Blackbaud was already doing. That helped her see what the company wasn't measuring, but the audit also helped inform its first report. "You can start reporting without having to be technical about it by sharing your own story," she said.</p><h2><strong>3. See what others are doing </strong></h2><p>With so many companies now publishing ESG metrics on their websites, it's a good idea to take a look through other reports and see what's being reported. At the same time, see what the rating agencies, such as S&amp;P and Fitch, are looking for – they <a href="http://spglobal.com/_assets/documents/ratings/esg/esg_evaluation_brochure_digital.pdf">tend to want</a> information on greenhouse gas emissions, workforce diversity, waste and pollution, and much more.</p><p>Also, consider looking at the new International Sustainability Standards Board's standards. It has several broad topics and industry-specific metrics to consider. "When companies say, it's overwhelming I don't know where to start, well we say you can start with these topics — it's manageable," said Neil Stewart, director of corporate outreach at the Value Reporting Foundation.</p><h2><strong>4. Do a materiality assessment </strong></h2><p>Once you've done research on what you may want to report, you need to do a materiality assessment, which involves figuring out exactly what you want to report on, Siegel said. You're not going to discuss everything – there are an endless amount of metrics to consider, many of which won't apply to your business.</p><p>This process, which should ideally be done by an ESG committee of people from across various departments, involves interviews with stakeholders – investors, executives, staff, clients, and community members – to find out what ESG issues are most important to tackle. "It could come in the form of a heat map with all different issues, such as ones that are most important to stakeholders and ones that have the highest impact on value," Siegel said.</p><h2><strong>5. Connect your ESG metrics with your financial ones </strong></h2><p>Part of building a reporting program is ensuring your ESG metrics relate to financial performance, noted Siegel. For instance, it's well understood that diverse employee populations bring more perspectives to the table, which then spurs innovation. It's important to connect the two: What kind of financial boost from increased innovation could you get from hiring more diverse staff?</p><p>"Think of it like a mosaic," he said. "The ESG data shows one part of the picture, while the financial information shows another. Put it all together and it brings the picture into focus."</p><h2><strong>6.  Start collecting data </strong></h2><p>Once you know what you want to measure, you need to start measuring it. There are many different ways to gather information, whether it's through employee and customer surveys, generating reports from cloud-based technologies, such as human capital management software that can present diversity metrics or enlisting outside help to track carbon emissions.</p><p>Your company will need to think carefully about how best to gather and then analyze information, but Peters also said businesses need to develop internal controls so they know the information they're collecting is accurate. For instance, she said it's important to have the right people accessing data and that your software is tracking the proper metrics so you can be sure everything is correct.</p><h2><strong style="color: #000000;">7. Report and review</strong></h2><p>Eventually, it will come time to report. The way you present your information and to which stakeholders will depend on the objectives you discussed at the start. Blackbaud, as with most companies, reports annually, but you could also report quarterly alongside your financials. Most reports show how specific categories have improved over the years, just like a financial-focused annual report would, but they also tell the story of the company's ESG journey.</p><p>When your first report is finished, you'll want to start some of these processes over again. Blackbaud just completed a "mini-material" assessment, where they went back to some stakeholders to see if there were other ESG metrics to consider.</p><p>"We've added significantly in the third and fourth version of our report — it's like building muscle. It can be really intimidating, but you don't have to do it all overnight," Hutchisson said.</p>

If the intricate supply chain isn't attainable, Sheep's investing strategy could be a good idea for small businesses looking to have a more sustainable impact.</p><h2>Sheep gives 5% of its revenue to environmental projects</h2><p>Most of the brand's carbon is offset by its biodiverse investing. The company dedicates 5% of its revenue to environmental projects, meaning every sweater it sells takes out a minimum of 320 kilograms of CO2 from the atmosphere, van der Wyck said. </p><div type="image" title="Sheep Products" height="1110" width="760" msid="82605961" hostid="261"></div><p>Steve Norcini, senior portfolio manager at Wilmington Trust told Insider the interest in environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) investing has been increasing over the last several years and that the pandemic, in addition to the presidential election, was a "tipping point" for many.</p><p>"It's possible that someday all investment strategies will incorporate ESG in some way," Norcini told Insider. </p><p>As part of its ESG strategy, Sheep gives 5% of its revenue to projects such as protecting engendered species and tree planting and agricultural projects, specifically soil regeneration, to help revive land that has been overfarmed.</p><p>The company also donates to what it calls "emergency projects" such as helping to curb Amazon deforestation and has started to take on projects dedicated to climate justice, inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.</p><p>Andrew Lee, head of sustainable and impact investing at UBS Global Wealth Management told Insider the pandemic also showed the importance of how companies operate and the relevance of ESG factors in investment analysis.</p><p>"The pandemic highlighted the interconnectedness between the environment, our health, markets, and the economy," he said.</p><p>If the 31 million small businesses in the US offset the same amount of carbon as Sheep does per sweater, 9.9 million metric tons of carbon could be taken from the atmosphere. That's just a start, of course, to the <a href="https://www.vox.com/energy-and-environment/2018/10/24/18001538/climate-change-co2-removal-negative-emissions-cdr-carbon-dioxide">100 gigatons</a> the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change recommends pulling from the atmosphere to undo decades of greenhouse gas emission.</p><h2>Inside the company's intricate supply chain model</h2><p>Though based in London, Sheep sources from farms in New Zealand. Cashmere is popular, but it's not quite sustainable, van der Wyck said, since it causes <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/01/exploding-demand-cashmere-wool-ruining-mongolia-s-grasslands">overgrazing in Mongolia.</a> "Wool is far better at doing things such as temperature regulating and not retaining odor," he said.  </p><div type="image" title="Sheep Products" height="1112" width="784" msid="82605963" hostid="261"></div><p>Sweaters are a timeless piece of a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/abercrombie-and-fitch-is-back-how-af-became-cool-again-2021-4">capsule wardrobe</a>, "it's something that hasn't necessarily gone out of style," van der Wyck said. The sweaters go for around $200 and were designed to be comfortable and not cause overheating. </p><p>Sheep sought out farms that use "regenerative farming techniques," meaning the farmers manage their lands to make them as bio-diverse as possible. Rich biodiversity on a farm can contribute to natural carbon mitigation, van der Wyck said. </p><p>"It's making sure that you have a rich cocktail of vegetation and flora and fauna, you want to make sure that soil rests because then it can absorb more carbon and you make sure that you're moving stock around," he continued. "So moving sheep around a lot, actually can have a positive impact on the environment." </p><p>The brand sources makes yarn on an Italian mill, uses a manufacturer in Spain. To transport the items throughout the world, Sheep uses ships. Water transportation, van der Wyck said, has a very <a href="https://theconversation.com/greta-thunberg-made-it-to-new-york-emissions-free-but-the-ocean-doesnt-yet-hold-the-key-to-low-carbon-travel-122518">small carbon footprint</a> and in total, the entire journey for Sheep produces about 500 grams (1.1 pounds) of CO2, according to van der Wyck.</p><h2>Allowing customers to adopt a sheep creates emotional buy-in</h2><p>Each Sheep sweater has a digital tag that allows the buyers to scan and adopt their own sheep.</p><p>"People start to create a connection with the sweater through having this emotional involvement with the sweater," he said.</p><p>Customers can see the exact location of their sheep via their phones, and even know when its lambs are born. The digital tags are inspired by the ones farmers use to track their respective flocks, and the brand will send emails with updates on how the sheep is doing, as well as updates about the farmers. </p><p>Van der Wyck believes consumer attitudes are starting to pivot away from fast fashion. The pandemic, if anything, has made people more aware of their impact their behaviors have on the planet. </p><p>"A lot of people had absolutely no idea how bad the fashion industry was," he said. "It's encouraging to see our message finally getting out there." </p>
