<keyword id="6487" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries-ltd" source="Orion">Reliance Industries Ltd</keyword> on Friday said its subsidiary has acquired majority stake in genomic testing frim <keyword id="12019788" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="strand-life-sciences-pvt-ltd" source="Orion">Strand Life Sciences Pvt Ltd</keyword> for ₹393 crore. The acquisition by <keyword id="11939413" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-strategic-business-ventures-ltd" source="Orion">Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Ltd</keyword> (RSBVL) is part of Reliance's digital health intiatives, the firm said in a stock exchange filing. "RSBVL, a wholly owned subsidiary of <keyword id="6355199" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries" source="Orion">Reliance Industries</keyword> Limited (RIL), has acquired 2.28 crore equity shares of ₹10 each of Strand Life Sciences Private Limited for a cash consideration of Rs 393 crore only," it said. A further investment of up to ₹160 crore is expected to be completed by March, 2023. "The total investment will translate into about 80.3 per cent of equity share capital in Strand on a fully diluted basis," it said. Strand was incorporated in India on October 6, 2000. It is a pioneer of genomic testing in India with bioinformatics software and clinical research solutions to healthcare providers, including clinicians, hospitals, medical devices manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies. Strand's turnover was ₹88.70 crore, ₹109.84 crore and ₹96.60 crore in FY2021, FY2020 and FY 2019, respectively. It reported a net profit of ₹8.48 crore in FY2021 but had a loss of ₹25.04 crore in the prior fiscal year and ₹21.66 crore in FY2019. "The aforesaid investment is part of group's digital health initiatives, to foster affordable access to world-class technology and innovation-led healthcare ecosystem in India," Reliance said adding no governmental or regulatory approvals were required for the said investment. The investment, it said, does not fall within related party transactions and none of RIL's promoter / promoter group / group companies have any interest in the transaction. Mukesh Ambani's Reliance acquires majority stake in Strand Life Sciences for ₹393 crore

Kanpur, The Indian Institute of Technology (<keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword>) in Kanpur has licensed a pioneering technology to Reliance Life Sciences Pvt. Ltd. that has the potential to revolutionise the field of <keyword id="68640" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="gene-therapy" source="Orion">gene therapy</keyword>, especially for many genetic eye diseases. There are many inherited disorders caused by a faulty gene. 'Gene Therapy' is a way to replace the faulty gene with a functional version of the gene to treat such disorders. This marks the first time that a gene therapy related technology has been developed and transferred from an academic institution to a company in India. The gene therapy technology from IIT Kanpur will be further developed as an Indigenous Product by Reliance Life Sciences, said an official release from IIT-K. Developed by Prof Jayandharan <keyword id="16753139" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="giridhara-rao" source="Orion">Giridhara Rao</keyword> and <keyword id="4120902" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="shubham-maurya" source="Orion">Shubham Maurya</keyword> from the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), IIT Kanpur, the patented technology modifies the gene of an organism to treat a hereditary disorder. In this case, the site refers to a specific location on an Adeno-associated virus (AAV) (viral vector) used for gene therapy. The technology modifies this location to optimize its ability to deliver genes to the affected cells and improve its effectiveness. The technology has the ability to improve gene therapy for many hereditary diseases, especially inherited eye diseases. It has shown significant promise in correcting the vision impairment in animal models of blindness. <keyword id="9701732" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="prof-abhay-karandikar" source="Orion">Prof Abhay Karandikar</keyword>, Director of IIT Kanpur, said, "Gene therapy using viral vectors has recently emerged as a potent tool in the field of molecular medicine. We believe that this technology holds great promise for treating a wide range of hereditary eye diseases including Leber congenital amaurosis, an eye disorder that is present from birth; and Retinitis pigmentosa, a disease causing progressive sustained vision loss." Gene therapy is one of the most potent applications of recombinant DNA technology wherein pieces of DNA from multiple sources are combined to efficiently deliver the healthy copy of the faulty gene in a manner that production of protein from the introduced gene is sustained for life. To enable this, the therapeutic DNA molecule is delivered using a virus that can infect human cells. For successful clinical application, several optimizations of the basic process is needed aimed at ensuring adequate expression of the desired gene. IIT Kanpur licenses gene therapy to Reliance Life Sciences

<keyword id="8144461" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="biocon-biologics" source="Orion">Biocon Biologics</keyword>, a subsidiary of <keyword id="6358361" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="biocon" source="Orion">Biocon</keyword>, on Thursday said it will offer around 15 per cent stake to <keyword id="12110332" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="serum-institute-life-sciences" source="Orion">Serum Institute Life Sciences</keyword> at a post-money valuation of about USD 4.9 billion. Serum Institute Life Sciences (SILS) is a subsidiary of Serum Institute of India (SII). For offering the 15 per cent stake, Biocon Biologics Ltd (BBL) will get committed access to 100 million doses of vaccines per annum for 15 years, primarily from SILS' upcoming vaccine facility in Pune with commercialisation rights of the SILS vaccine portfolio, including <keyword id="9078985" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="COVID-19-vaccines" source="Orion">COVID-19 vaccines</keyword>, for the <keyword id="35145" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="global-market" source="Orion">global market</keyword>, Biocon said in a regulatory filing. "Pursuant to the terms of the agreement, BBL will generate a committed revenue stream and related margins, commencing H2, FY23. <keyword id="383467" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="adar-poonawalla" source="Orion">Adar Poonawalla</keyword> will have a Board seat in Biocon Biologics Limited," it added. In addition to vaccines, the strategic alliance will also develop antibodies targeting several infectious diseases like dengue and HIV. "This alliance will complement the strengths and resources of the two leading players in vaccines and biologics. Our shared vision of building large scale businesses having global impact makes it a unique and synergistic value creation opportunity," Biocon and Biocon Biologics Executive Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said. The two companies will enter Service Level Agreements for manufacturing and distribution of the vaccines and antibodies. "We look forward to complementing each other's capabilities and capacities in vaccines and biologics, with the objective of addressing inequitable access both in emerging and developed markets for life saving vaccines and biologics," Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla said. Biocon Biologics will also establish, at its cost, a vaccine R&amp;D division to support the strategic alliance in developing both vaccines and biologics for communicable diseases. Additionally, wherever possible, it will make available its cell culture and sterile fill and finish capacities for vaccine production under the strategic alliance, the filing said. "Biocon Biologics would issue shares and receive the contemplated rights through a merger with Covidshield Technologies Pvt. Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of SILS, on customary closing conditions and receipt of regulatory approvals," it added. Biocon Biologics to offer 15% stake to Serum Institute Life Sciences at valuation of $4.9 billion

New Delhi, Feb 21 () Consumer healthcare firm Strides Consumer on Friday said it has forayed into North Indian market with oral nicotine replacement therapy and topical analgesic segments. The company currently has strong presence in states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Assam. "We have forayed in the market in North as it is a large market in terms of size and consumers here are quite open to trying new products," Strides Consumer Pvt Ltd CEO Subodh Marwah told . The company plans to expand its presence in western region too, he added. "The expansion into the new geographic sphere testifies our vision to take our brand and products to every customer in the nation," Marwah said. As part of the foray, the company has launched two products -- Nixit, a oral nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product, and Jointflex, a topical analgesic cream for joint care, Strides Consumer said. Started in 2017, Strides Consumer Pvt Ltd has two marquee investors -- India Life Sciences Fund, which holds around 74 per cent stake in the company, and Strides Pharma Science Ltd with the balance stake of around 26 per cent. Strides Consumer forays into North India market

When the Honourable <keyword id="15204227" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shri-Hardeep-S-Puri" source="Orion">Shri Hardeep S. Puri</keyword> wrote to me about his plans to publish an anthology to celebrate the centenary of <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> and invited me as a celebrated alumnus to write a few words on this magnificent occasion, I wrote back and told him that I was the wrong person to be asked to do this. I did not believe that I fell into the category of 'eminent personalities' he had given reference to, as my years at the university (1958-61) were an academic embarrassment to me. If I were to write something, it would all be rather frivolous and not in keeping with the grace and intent of the anthology, I told him. But he persisted, and I relented. The DU (North Campus) where I sought admission and studied was, perhaps, patterned along the lines of the Cambridge and Oxford universities in the United Kingdom (UK), where several colleges stood side by side at one prominent location, many sharing common boundaries - not just of the physical built environment but also of a deeper educative ethos of imparting the requisite attitudes, values and knowledge to build generations of leaders. This is shared situatedness imbued immense camaraderie among the students. We would stroll into each other's colleges, mix with fellow students, relax at each other's canteens, travel in the same university bus to our home locations, become bitter rivals at intercollegiate competitions, and immediately forget all that animosity to join our voices in cheering for the university when it played against another. This was 1958, and I was at Kirori Mal College pursuing the BSc General course, from which I just about graduated in my final year. Academically, it was the wrong decision to take up Science, but the years spent there were an education in many other spheres, which has proved to be invaluable in my life. Looking back at the influence of my education on my career, I realize that it is the amalgamation of diverse disciplines that inspires every form of creative activity. For instance, where would writers be without a printing press, stage thespians without a proscenium and lights, painters without pigments and canvas, and, in my case, film actors without a camera? Education engenders myriad symbiotic opportunities in the spheres of technology and humanities. Chances are very high that I would not have been in cinema or in any other creative aspect of life without a grounding in education-education which is in consonance with the belief that 'what sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the human soul'. Before leaving the hallowed grounds of university, we sculpt our identity; we strengthen and fortify our convictions in a manner that we do not fall into a trap-the trap of being swayed by the prejudices of caste and creed, and race and religion. During my days at the university, classes were held at the main university building, while the subsidiaries and practicals were conducted at the various individual colleges. It goes without saying that there is a palpable nostalgia as I think back on the hours spent at the Coffee House, or at the bus stop outside Miranda House (yes, always outside Miranda House), or on the sports field that would host intercollegiate and inter-university cricket matches, and, of course, in the classroom where regular attendance paid its dividends when it came to term-end examinations. If I may be permitted to stroll down memory lane a little more, it was at DU that I received my first serious encouragement as an actor. The tall and imposing Mr Frank Thakurdas of the dramatics club paid me my first compliment when I performed in a stage production of Maxwell Anderson's "Winterset". He recommended me to the USIS drama company to play the part of Abraham Lincoln, and chose me for the part of Zeus in Benn Levy's "The Rape of the Belt", staged at Miranda House. Mr Thakurdas remains a part of me. So does Dr Swaroop Singh, a messianic educationist who was the principal of Kirori Mal when I was studying there and later became the university's vice chancellor. Without saying it in so many words, he made us realize that we needn't aspire towards a graduation degree merely because of peer or parental pressure. He reminded us that we should aspire to become graduates because we feel the desire to be complete with the advantage of formal education. For argument's sake, some may opine today that education isn't mandatory any more, with the proliferation of what some may call 'unconventional' jobs and vocations. Some may wonder about the relevance of a degree if one cannot apply it later in one's profession. To my mind, these arguments are superfluous. To be sure, it is a bonus if we can use our education directly in our everyday work-in fact, that would be ideal. However, even if that weren't to be the case, the years spent on campus serve a much more vital purpose-they broaden our knowledge about the world around us, besides aiding personality development. Clearly, initiative in reading at the library, participating in cultural events, and asking more of ourselves and of our educationists, add up to making us aware and concerned citizens. As the proverb goes: Whatever is good to know is difficult to learn. Moreover, no one can argue against the fact that campus life is the formative stage in every individual's life; that is when we 'remove the shackles', as it were. Suddenly, from a regimented life, we are free to make our decisions and heuristically zero in on the subject we want to study or the vocation we want to take up. It is a key period in any young person's life - one of choice. My father taught English and poetry, and he expected me to opt for Arts in college. When I didn't, he was accommodative and understanding. Certainly, the youth of today - in fact, of any day and age - does not want to be preached at. As time goes by, they become more clued-up and more aware of their needs and aspirations. They can see which route to take on the highway of the future. But, believe me, that is not enough. They must also know their speed limits, when to turn and when to apply the brakes. The <keyword id="151282" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="university-of-delhi" source="Orion">University of Delhi</keyword> was absolutely essential in that regard. Time sped its way along, and then one fine day, almost 50 years after I joined Kirori Mal, I was informed that Delhi University was decorating me with an honorary doctorate. The first sentiment was to express my limitless gratitude. Who would have thought that an ordinary student graduate would someday be accorded such an overwhelming homecoming? My immediate response after that was to ask myself if I deserved an honour of such magnitude. Was I worthy to be honoured by my university, my very own family, which gave me some of the most wonderful years of my life? This was the same institution that inculcated in me the values and principles of life that I cherish deeply and will abide by to my dying day. Among all the accolades that I have been extremely fortunate to have received, it is, perhaps ironically, being bestowed with this honorary doctorate that I regard as one of the highest honours. A lifelong debt is owed to the University of Delhi. I feel it is only fair that I reciprocate the tremendous faith and honour the university has shown me. This anthology, edited by Shri Hardeep S. Puri ji and including some fascinating entries by other more deserving alumni of the DU family, allows me to pay my respects. Indeed, it was a privilege to be at the nation's premier seat of learning-one which has always championed the cause of education since its inception a hundred years ago. My best wishes to the University of Delhi. 'I don't believe I fall into the category of eminent personalities': Amitabh Bachchan

New Delhi, Feb 7 () Drug firm Procter &amp; Gamble Health on Friday reported a net profit of Rs 38.21 crore for the December quarter. The company had posted a net profit of Rs 715.34 crore for the corresponding period of previous fiscal, Procter &amp; Gamble Health said in a filing to the BSE. Revenue from operations stood at Rs 236.76 crore for the quarter under consideration. It was Rs 204.39 crore for the same period year ago. The company completed the execution of business transfer agreement with Merck Life Sciences Pvt Ltd to sell, lease, or otherwise transfer certain businesses comprising exclusively of biopharma, performance materials and life sciences segments to the latter on November 30, 2018. In a separate filing, the company said its board has approved the re-appointment of Suresh Talwar and Rani Jadhav as independent directors for a period of five years with effect from April 8, 2020, up to March 31, 2025. P&G Health posts net profit of Rs 38.21 cr for Dec qtr

New Delhi, Feb 29 () The national pharmaceutical regulator NPPA has exempted a new coronary stent developed by Meril Life Sciences from price control for five years under a provision of the Drug Price Control Order 2013. The company has got exemption for its product MeRes100TM BRS - Sirolimus eluting bioabsorbable vascular scaffold system from the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), Meril Life Sciences said in a statement. The company said it will start commercial production of the stent in a couple of months. After much deliberation, "the Authority decided that exemption may be granted to Meril Life Sciences Pvt Ltd under para 32 (ii) of DPCO 2013 for their coronary stents 'MeRes 100 - Sirolimus eluting bioabsorbable vascular scaffold system' as per the recommendation made by the multidisciplinary committee of experts," the NPPA said in minutes of its meeting. The authority also directed the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to ensure close safety monitoring of the coronary stents that have been exempted in public interest, as per the minutes of the meeting held on February 25, 2020. The government had in 2017 had slashed the prices of life-saving coronary stents by up to 85 per cent. Meril Life Sciences Corporate Strategy VP Sanjeev Bhatt told : "The positive decision by NPPA confirming non-applicability of DPCO 2013 under Para 32 for MeRes100 BRS, made post an exhaustive multi-stakeholder review, demonstrates the commitment of the Indian Government to encourage not only 'Make in India', but also Research in India." An extensively researched innovation, MeRes100 BRS is backed by three-year efficacy and safety clinical trial data, and has received eight patents worldwide, he added. "We are committed to introducing MeRes100 BRS in India and the world responsibly by undertaking a range of measures to ensure effective access and right use, including conducting a 2,000-patient large scale randomized study, building 1,000-patient Indian and global patient registries and ongoing education of interventional cardiologists," Bhatt said. Under para 32 (ii) of the DPCO 2013, the provisions of DPCO 2013 order shall not apply to "a manufacturer producing a new drug in the country by a new process developed through indigenous Research and Development and patented under the Indian Patent Act, 1970 (39 of 1970) (process patent) for a period of five years from the date of the commencement of its commercial production in the country." 15 Winners honoured at the 10th Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2019

Twenty-three-year old <keyword id="3315781" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shrikanth-Bolla">Shrikanth Bolla</keyword> has already achieved what most people of his age will take atleast years to achieve. That too, despite being blind. 
 He faced discrimination due to his disability early on in life. After he was born blind, his parents were advised by the villagers in Sitaramapuram in <keyword id="37102" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Andhra-Pradesh">Andhra Pradesh</keyword> to let him die. 
 
At school too, he was excluded from sports and pushed to sit in the last bench away from the whole class. That however did little to deter Shrikanth to excel in studies and topping in Class 10 Board exams in his cool. 
 
At the intermediate level, Shrikanth wanted to study science but he got a rude shock when the Andhra Pradesh Education Board refused to grant him permission, stating that Arts was the only stream the blind could opt for. 
 
Not one to give up, he filed a case and after a six-month long wait, the Board agreed to let him pursue Science. At the end of two years, Shrikanth topped Class 12, securing 98%. 
 
The discrimination refused to stop. Next up was<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=IIT&amp;sortorder=effectivedate"> IIT</a>. Shrikanth wanted to study engineering at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology but he was denied an admit card to the <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> entrance examination. 
 
That’s when Shrikanth decided, “If IIT doesn’t want me, I don’t want IIT either!” 
 He then proceed to apply to schools in the United States for an undergraduate programme and ended up securing admission in four colleges- <keyword id="54274" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="MIT">MIT</keyword>, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon. He eventually chose <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=mit&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">MIT</a>, becoming the school’s first international blind student. 
 
After graduating from MIT, Srikanth felt the need to do something about the lack of opportunities for the disabled in India. Thus, he gave up lucrative corporate opportunities in America, he returned to India and started Samanvai, a non-profit organisation based in Hyderabad with the aim to provide ‘individualized, need-based and goal-oriented support services to students with multiple disabilities.’ Additionally, he also provided tutorial services to such students by promoting Braille literacy and a printing press/library. He ended up mentoring and nurturing over 3,000 students. 
 Shrikanth wasn’t done just yet. Then in 2012, he decided to take up the issue of employability of the disabled, and thus started <keyword id="3314961" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollant-Industries">Bollant Industries</keyword> Pvt. Ltd, which provides livelihood opportunities to the physically challenged. The company employs disabled and uneducated people to manufacture eco-friendly disposable packaging products. 
 
Today, Bollant employs over 150 disabled individuals and has five manufacturing units. Its annual sales have already crossed Rs. 70 million and the company is worth Rs 50 crore. 
 
Shrikanth is the living example of the fact that talent, hard work and determination can get you past any difficulties.
