The way people commute in Indian cities has been redefined ever since the app-based aggregators like Uber and Ola made its entry in India. However, most state governments, which didn’t plan to revamp the transportation ecosystem in Indian metros, where buses are overcrowded and autorickshaws hardly ply by meter, couldn’t digest the convenience the public was enjoying. Result – Karnataka government decided to ban the pool service offered by cab aggregators. 
 
Car pool is an amazing scope to cut down carbon footprint and save on pocket. It’s a cab service within these cab aggregators, where multiple passengers get on a same cab going towards the same locality. Many a times, the prices are 30-50% less than the cab fare. 
 
After banning cab pool service in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has now granted a 15-day extension to mobile-based cab aggregators to comply with rules regarding ride-sharing services. 
During the period, the aggregators are expected to modify their software in order to withdraw UberPool and OlaShare options. 
 
However, during the same period, they are at liberty to appeal against the ban on ride-sharing services (for which they have to seek a modification of the contract carriage permit, under the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rules). 
 
Also, in the 15-day period, aggregators are free to continue ride-sharing services. 
 
"We will stop enforcement for the next 15 days.During this period, the aggregators have agreed to make necessary changes in their mobile apps. They can also seek to amend the Karnataka Motor Vehicle Rule,” the Transport commissioner MK Aiyappa told The Economic Times. 
 
However, before the transport department decided to grant this grace period, the state police has seized around 30 cabs that were continuing with ride-sharing services posing as passengers.

Like Buseet and Swvl, both are focused on using tech to remake the ubiquitous microbus sector. Uber Manager of Matching Science Eoin O'Mahony <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6478077243313790976/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote on LinkedIn</a> that it could "unlock a new global business for Uber, serving the $100B, 100 billion annual rides ultra-low-cost transit market for high capacity vehicles." Like microbuses, Uber Bus and Careem Bus fit around a dozen passengers each with prices aimed at a working-class population that can't afford daily private rides. Uber has said prices will be <a href="https://www.menabytes.com/uber-bus-egypt-cairo/">80% cheaper than a standard Uber</a>, while Careem has said its service <a href="https://www.menabytes.com/careem-bus-cairo/">will be 60-70% cheaper</a> than a standard Careem. That sentiment was echoed by Tino Waked, Uber's general manager for the Middle East and North Africa. In an interview with Business Insider, Waked pointed to the Middle East's rapidly expanding young population, limited transportation infrastructure, and large demand for low-cost transportation solutions as reasons the company sees the region as an ideal place to invest and test new services.In the battle for dominance over Egypt and the Middle East, Uber and Careem have made localizations to cater their product to the market. Both companies allow cash payment and <a href="https://gulfbusiness.com/uber-eyes-cheaper-uae-rides-emirati-drivers-get-behind-wheel/">offer low-cost rides</a> <a href="https://ww.egyptindependent.com/egyptians-concerned-about-safety-as-careem-introduces-new-scooter-service/">on scooters</a>, tuk-tuks, and motorcycles. In order to deepen its smartphone penetration in Egypt, Uber will <a href="https://gulfnews.com/business/uber-to-introduce-new-lightweight-app-for-middle-east-1.61728950">soon launch a version of its app</a> requiring less data, after launching a similar app in other Middle Eastern countries last year. Uber has reportedly engaged in talks to purchase Careem, according to the Wall Street Journal, which reported that some bankers see the sale as inevitable given how much more cash Uber has to burn in its duel with Careem.<h2>Solving Egypt's transportation problems could help solve issues for other countries in emerging markets</h2><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.instagram.com/harrisonxjacobs">Harrison Jacobs/Business Insider</a>Traffic in Cairo is nightmarish.</div></div></div>The battle to win Egypt is likely about more than just winning a lucrative market: It's also about unlocking access to other countries suffering similar transportation woes. "There is tremendous opportunity in Egypt. This is a country of 100 million people and there's a sense that solutions that work here will work in other parts of the world with similar obstacles," Antaki told me.While the two whales duke it out, the other Egyptian transportation startups are hoping they can outmaneuver both with a better understanding of the needs in a developing market. Last year, bus startup Swvl raised an <a href="https://digestafrica.com/egypt-swvl-expanding-kenya-nairobi/">approximate $38 million</a>, putting its valuation close to $100 million, and in January it <a href="https://digestafrica.com/egypt-swvl-expanding-kenya-nairobi/#.XHYFzpNKhQI">launched a pilot program in Nairobi, Kenya</a>, another city notorious for its snarled traffic and anything-goes microbuses. Swvl has plans to launch in several Southeast Asian cities in the coming months.Meanwhile, Halan, the startup focused on tuk-tuks and motorcycles, raised <a href="https://digestafrica.com/egypt-halan-funding-algebra-ventures/#.XHYGAJNKhQJ">$4.3 million in Series A funding</a> in December, opened up a second market in Sudan, and added Uber founder Oscar Salazar to its board. In the announcement, Salazar <a href="https://www.menabytes.com/oscar-salazar-halan/">cited Halan's desire</a> to bring transportation to "the remaining 6 billion" people not being served by major ride-hailing companies. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://www.instagram.com/goinganniewhere/">Annie Zheng/Business Insider</a></div></div></div>When I asked Swvl founder Mostafa Kandil how the company could compete with Uber and Careem, he suggested that the transportation needs are so dire in Cairo and other similar markets that, unlike cities in the US, one or two transportation companies cannot serve all the demand. "You see the same problem across emerging markets, whether it's Manila, Nairobi or Jakarta. One single player is not enough to build the network," Kandil told Business Insider. "We like to see ourselves as building a profitable mass transit system from scratch in emerging markets and taking it off governments' hands."Rather than crowd out smaller players like Swvl, Uber Bus has expanded demand in Cairo, according to Kandil, who said that Swvl signups have quadrupled since the launch of Uber Bus.For now, Halan founder Mounir Nakhla believes concerns about competition from Uber or Careem is overblown, saying it's like comparing a plane to a taxi. Whereas Uber or Careem is typically used by wealthier consumers for mid-length rides and Swvl and other bus serves are for long commutes, Nakhla said, Halan is focused on short rides of around a mile or less, areas not typically served by Uber or Careem, and low-income passengers. "When you live in a country like Egypt, where there are so many needs and pain points, it means there are a lot of opportunities," Nakhla told Business Insider.Nakhla has deep experience both with tuk-tuks and Egypt's low-income population, having <a href="https://www.dpi-llp.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/MNT-Final-Press-Release-1.pdf">co-founded Egypt's largest financing business for utility vehicles like tuk-tuks</a> in 2009 and a micro-finance business in 2015. Both Kandil and Nakhla suggested their more clear-cut focus on the low-cost market and their first-hand knowledge of emerging markets will help give them a leg up when they do eventually come head-to-head with the tech giants. That day may be coming sooner than later. As Waked, Uber's general manager for the Middle East and North Africa, told Business Insider, Uber's goal, particularly in the Middle East is to "become a one-stop shop for all your transportation and delivery needs." Uber is locked in a battle to fix Egypt's $8 billion traffic problem, and its success could decide which tech giant will dominate the Middle East and Africa

In a bid to make life easy this festive season, Uber, a San Francisco-based ridesharing service, has dropped the fare by 25% on all its rides in the national capital, making Uber almost as cheap as auto-rickshaw fare. 
 As per the new fare, <keyword id="2483158" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="UberBLACK">UberBlack</keyword> will cost Rs 56.25 + Rs 13.5 per km + Rs 1.5 per min as compared to Rs 75 + Rs 18 per km + Rs 2 per min earlier. Commuters are facing problems today as a large number of autos and taxis remained off the roads in the wake of day-long nationwide strike. 
 
At least 10 <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=central+trade+unions+">central trade unions</a> went on a strike to protest against changes in labour laws and privatisation of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Public+Sector+undertakings+%28PSUs">Public Sector undertakings (PSUs</a>), which affected normal life across India, including in <keyword id="6357783" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="West-Bengal">West Bengal</keyword> and Kerala. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Public+Sector+undertakings+%28PSUs">Bharatiya Janata Party</a>-backed BMS and NFITU, however, stayed away from the strike. 
 
Trade union leaders claimed that around 15 crore formal sector workers are on strike in support of their 12-point charter of demands. 
 
These demands includes urgent measures to contain <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=price+rise">price rise</a>, contain <keyword id="6358907" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="unemployment">unemployment</keyword>, strict enforcement of basic labour laws, universal social security cover for all workers and minimum wage of Rs 15,000 per month. 
 
In Kolkata, partial impact was seen on suburban trains while shops, markets and business establishments in most areas remained closed. People faced problems in the National Capital too.

On Tuesday, the government appealed trade unions to call off the agitation in the interest of workers and nation. 
 
The unions, however, decided to go ahead with strike as their talks with a ministerial panel headed by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Finance+Minister+Arun+Jaitley+">Finance Minister Arun Jaitley</a> last month did not make any headway on their demands. 
 The unions are also demanding enhanced pension for workers, stoppage of disinvestment in PSUs, stoppage of contractorisation, removal of ceiling on bonus and provident fund, compulsory registration of trade unions within 45 days, no amendment to labour laws unilaterally, stopping of <keyword id="44528" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="FDI">FDI</keyword> in Railways and Defence.

The government has blocked access to social media and messaging platforms in the affected regions.</li></ul>On March 6th, the Sri Lankan government declared an emergency for the first time since 2011.  Sri Lanka is no stranger to <keyword id="6378337" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Communal-violence">communal violence</keyword>. For decades it endured a civil war with Tamil separatist groups, which concluded in 2009 after the Sri Lankan military seized the last few strongholds belonging to the Tamil Tigers and killed its leader. Then, in 2014, the southwestern region of the island nation was besieged by ethnic riots as Sinhalese Buddhists vandalised Muslim shops and homes. Since coming to power in early 2015, the coalition government of President Maithripala Sirisena has done a poor job of quelling communal dissent and clipping the wings of organisations like the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), a Sinhalese extremist group. The most recent clashes follow a strong performance by the party of former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa in local elections. A number of hardline Sinhalese outfits like the BBS are known to support Rajapaksa. Timeline: Feb 22nd According to local media reports, M.G. Kumarasinghe, a 41-year old Sinhalese truck driver, was attacked by a group of Muslim men in Teldeniya, a town in Kandy, over a road dispute. Mr Kumarasinghe refused or was unable to yield the right-of-way to the men, who were travelling in auto-rickshaws. A fight ensued in which Kumarasinghe sustained a number of serious injuries. He was subsequently admitted to the Kandy’s Teaching Hospital the same day. Four men were reportedly arrested by the police for the assault. Feb 27th A group of Sinhalese men, who were said to be intoxicated, raided a Muslim-owned restaurant in Ampara, claiming that the establishment laced its food with ‘vandapethi’, a chemical that is believed to result in impotence. The anger of the men stemmed from the belief that Muslims have a clandestine agenda to become the majority group in the Sri Lanka. A cashier at the restaurant was forced to admit that the food was adulterated. The raid was followed by riots, in which a number of shops and a mosque were vandalised. March 4th In response to Kumarasinghe’s death, a Sinhalese mob attacked and looted Muslim establishments, residences and mosques in Teldeniya. A number of Sinhalese men also shut down their shops to protest the police’s supposed lack of action against Mr Kumarasinghe’s killers. Night: Two Buddhist extremist clerics, Ampitiye Sumana and Amith Weerasinghe, were reported to be seen inciting riots in the area. March 5th Morning: The Sri Lankan government sent hundreds of officers, including the Special Task Force and military personnel, to Teldeniya and neighbouring towns in the district.
