But while technology and technologists may want to make it so, regulators are in two minds. The country has also been formulating plans to provide clean energy for crypto mining within its borders by leveraging its volcanoes. Highly subsidized power prices have also led to a mining <a href="https://news.bitcoin.com/argentina-cheap-power-tariffs-are-creating-a-bitcoin-mining-boom/#:~:text=Argentina%20is%20experiencing%20a%20mining%20boom%2C%20due%20to%20the%20highly,one%20established%20by%20the%20government.">boom</a> in Argentina. Crypto mining is the process of validating crypto transactions, which in turn creates new tokens on the blockchain. Miners run large data center-like facilities called ‘farms’, which generate a lot of computing power. Hence, not only do they need electricity to run them, but also keep the systems cool. <keyword id="48890" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Latin-America">Latin America</keyword> aside, even the US has been seen as a favourable location for crypto mining by many. “We have governors like Greg Abbott in Texas who are promoting mining. It is going to become a real industry in the United States, which is going to be incredible.” Brandon Arvanaghi, a crypto engineer with the Gemini crypto exchange <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cryptocurrency/news/chinas-crypto-miners-are-looking-at-texas-amid-the-great-mining-migration/articleshow/83601284.cms">told</a> CNBC. Miami too has made a pitch for attracting crypto companies to its borders. Facebook’s Diem, which is expected to become a blueprint for the US’ official central bank digital currency (CBDC), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cryptocurrency/news/what-you-need-to-know-about-facebooks-diem-cryptocurrency/articleshow/82629281.cms">announced</a> plans to launch a dollar-backed stablecoin on May 12. Yet another sign that companies expect favourable <a href="https://wazirx.com/signup?invite=2kpah6gr&amp;utm_source=business-insider&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=microsite">crypto regulations</a> from the world’s most powerful nation. Things aren’t as rosy on the other side of the world But as much as one half of the world seems in favour of regulating crypto and keeping it alive, the other half seems to be against it. China, the country that houses most of the world’s Bitcoin mines, recently started a crackdown against these firms. The country doesn’t just have reservations about money laundering and sovereignty of its currency, it also has environmental concerns from crypto mining’s energy requirements. Central banks in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/cryptocurrency/news/indias-crypto-exchanges-are-reportedly-considering-going-to-court-against-the-countrys-central-bank/articleshow/83034174.cms">India</a> and <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/indonesian-central-bank-prohibits-cryptocurrency-061727801.html">Indonesia</a> too have shown concerns against crypto recently. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued an informal guidance in May, asking lenders to stop doing business with crypto exchanges and firms. Indonesia’s central bank, too, said it would not accept cryptocurrencies as legal tender. As much as South Asian countries may oppose cryptocurrencies, they do not oppose blockchain technology overall. In fact, the RBI had detailed plans to build its own CBDC earlier this year, while China became the first country to test a CBDC long ago. The country already has test processes for a digital Yuan running in some areas within its borders. The world being split may be a good thing though. Cryptocurrencies were considered a fringe industry as early as two years ago, the mere fact that regulators are split shows more acceptance, and could pave the way for regulations — even if they aren’t always favourable. Even as Latin America embraces Bitcoin, Southeast Asia is clamping down on cryptocurrencies

At the APEC CEO Summit, a young PH scientist <keyword id="3141628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aisa-Mijeno">Aisa Mijeno</keyword> was the showstealer even as she shared the dais with e-commerce giant <keyword id="302749" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Alibaba">Alibaba</keyword> founder <keyword id="424838" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jack-Ma">Jack Ma</keyword>, due to her splendid creation that not only had everyone in the plenary surprised but also left the US President <keyword id="15962" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Barack-Obama">Barack Obama</keyword>, who was hosting the panel, completely in awe of her. 
 
Mijeno, an engineer and Greenpeace member came up with what she named the Sustainable Alternative Lighting (SALt) lamp – an environment friendly alternative light source that runs merely on two table spoons of salt and one glass of tap water. It is made of tediously experimented and improved chemical compounds, catalysts, and metal alloys that when submerged in electrolytes result in generating electricity. This lamp can operate for eight hours at one go, and simply by replenishing the salt solution one can get another 8 hours of light. 
 
It’s consumable inside has to be replaced one in a year for which one has to spend $6. The cost of the lamp has also been priced very low at $20. The SALt project is providing lighting to a few areas without electricity with the creation of such lamps that run on saline solution. The same solution is also used to charge mobile phones, Mijeno said during the forum. 
 
“Most families living on island are not connected to power grids, so they mainly use kerosene and fuel-based lamps as the main source of lighting, and we know the danger that kerosene lamps pose—it can cause fire accidents, it emits black carbon—so that's the main reason why what we want is, we wanted to provide this people with a lighting option that is more cost-effective, that is more safe, more sustainable, and environment-friendly, by a way of a lantern that uses saline solution or ocean water as a means, a catalyst to generate electricity,” she said. 
 
“In turn it will be able to power up LED and of course power up a USB port where you can also charge low-power mobile devices like your phone, which is very essential in times of emergencies or disaster scenarios,” she added. 
 
Impressed with the innovation, Obama said, “Aisa is a perfect example of what we're seeing in a lot of countries—young entrepreneurs coming up with leapfrog technologies. But the point is, they didn't have to make some of the massive infrastructure investments. This is part of the reason why the old idea of development and environmental sustainability, I think, is outdated. It does raise the issue, though, how can both government and larger companies be assisting in creating a climate for innovation that encourages young entrepreneurs like Aisa?
