10 stunning pictures you must see if you missed the 'Ring of Fire' solar eclipse

<p>Thursday's partial solar eclipse will begin at 3:38 pm EDT (12:38 pm PDT) and last through 7:52 pm EDT (4:52 pm PDT).</p>
<p><strong>The most spectacular portion of the partial eclipse, when the moon blocks out the most sun, </strong><strong style="line-height: 1.5em;">will happen around 5:45 pm EDT (2:45 pm PDT).</strong></p>
<p>Each time a solar eclipse occurs, only a small part of the world gets to see it. This is because a solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between the Earth and sun, casting its shadow across the Earth as it does so. But the shadow is relatively small, meaning only some of us get the chance to see this phenomenon each time it happens.</p>
<p>This time around, it will be North America's turn.</p>
<p>It's rare for most of the US to be able to see a solar eclipse like the one happening this week. <a href="http://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/list.html">The next time</a> a solar eclipse will be visible from across the US will be the total solar eclipse on Aug. 21, 2017. But <strong>the entire country won't see another partial solar eclipse, like the one happening this week, until the year 2023</strong>.</p>

<p>Each month, the moon changes its shape from a new moon, to a crescent, to a full, and back. The sun never wavers in its full glory - except during a solar eclipse, like the one taking place this Thursday, Oct. 23.</p>
<p>During a solar eclipse, the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, casting its shadow over the side of the Earth that's facing the sun. The bizarre site we see, as a result, is our sun blocked out either fully or partially by a blackness that is the moon.</p>
<p>Only two to five solar eclipses occur each year. This week's solar eclipse is what is called a partial eclipse. It is the second and last solar eclipse we will see in 2014. A partial eclipse means that the moon will take only a small bite out of the sun as opposed to consuming it completely like during a total solar eclipse, pictured below.</p>

<p>The solar eclipse will grace the skies everywhere in the US except New England and Hawaii. The best place to see the eclipse is in the Central time zone, according to NASA astrophysicist <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Rcf_QNaXK0">Fred Espanak</a>, because the time of maximum partial eclipse - when the moon appears to take the biggest bite out of the sun - will happen right around sunset.</p>

Remember that no one should look directly at the sun during a partial eclipse without proper equipment, as it can <a href="http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEhelp/safety2.html">damage the eyes</a>.</p>

Solar eclipse 2015: the best pictures from across Europe

<p>Today's <keyword id="6391802" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="astronomy">Astronomy</keyword> Picture Of The Day, presented by NASA, is a great image of the <keyword id="24879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sun">sun</keyword> <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-solar-eclipse-november-2013-2013-11">during the recent solar eclipse</a>.</p>
<p>Nothing really special is happening to the sun during a <keyword id="6699518" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar-Eclipse">solar eclipse</keyword>, the moon is just lined up with it, blocking most of the light radiating from our star.</p>
<p>But this composite view shows an image of the sun as it looked behind the moon, combined with the outflow of the <keyword id="45681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar">solar</keyword> corona - the charged particles flowing out of the sun's surface. Those particles are what we can see during the eclipse when the actual mass of the star is obscured:</p>

This Is What The Sun Looks Like During A Solar Eclipse

<p>Sky watchers across the world were <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-solar-eclipse-november-2013-2013-11" target="_blank">treated to a rare hybrid solar eclipse on Sunday</a> morning - when an annular <keyword id="6699518" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar-Eclipse">solar eclipse</keyword> (when the only visible part of the <keyword id="24879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sun">sun</keyword> appears as a bright ring around the moon) transitions into a total solar eclipse (when the moon completely blocks the sun).</p>
<p>Eclipse watchers got a different view depending on their region of the world. Early risers in the eastern United States could see a partial eclipse. Only people in central Africa got to see the total eclipse of the sun. In Kenya, the total eclipse lasted for 15 seconds. </p>

Brilliant Photos From The Rare Solar Eclipse

Stunning images show the rare solar eclipse that just partially obscured the sun across the Northern Hemisphere

<p>A partial solar eclipse, like the one happening this Thursday, will not be visible from across the entire US again until <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-the-2014-solar-eclipse-2014-10">the year 2023</a>. Since the next one is nearly a decade away, you'll want to get the most out of this one.</p>
<p>Here are five ways you can have fun in the eclipsed sun this Thursday.</p>
<p><em>Note: Even though this week's event is only a partial eclipse, you should still protect your eyes from the sun's harmful light. If you want to look directly at the eclipsed sun, make sure you're looking through <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00712I3JA/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2/175-7199317-3650152?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&amp;pf_rd_r=0T2BQ3QQGH8V697PKM9A&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_p=1944687682&amp;pf_rd_i=B00DS7S52W">a solar filter</a>, something that's much stronger than ordinary sunglasses. If you're looking through a telescope, make sure to attach a filter. Now that we've cleared that up, onto the fun.</em></p>
<h2>1. Look Through An Object</h2>
<p>As the sun starts to disappear behind the moon, take a look around for spots where light is passing through an object, such as light passing through leaves on a tree. This is an image where the leaves act as a pinhole camera that projects the image of the eclipsed sun onto a nearby wall.</p>

<h2>2. Look Through Your Hands</h2>
<p>If you can't find any natural pinholes, then you can make one yourself with your hands. Spread your fingers apart and lay one hand over the other, so your fingers look like a large waffle fry.The light will pass in between the slits in your hand and project the crescent sun onto the ground, like in the image below.</p>

<h2>3. Look Through A Strainer</h2>
<p>Another great way to view the eclipse is with some of your kitchen utensils. A draining spoon or a pasta strainer makes fantastic pinholes that will project dozens of solar eclipse shadows for you to enjoy.</p>

<h2>4. Add A Solar Filter To Your Camera</h2>
<p>If you have a decent camera and a solar filter, you can take some great pictures of the partial solar eclipse directly. <h2>5. Use Binoculars Or A Telescope</h2>
<p>A pair of binoculars or a telescope is the best way to see a solar eclipse up close and personal. And the best part is that you can make a solar filter for either of these instruments for little money with mostly material you have at home. <h2>6. Watch It Live Online</h2>
<p>If you cannot view this week's partial solar eclipse because of cloudy skies or you're not in a region where the eclipse is visible, you can still get a chance to watch it with the rest of the US and Canada. Here Are The 6 Best Ways To Experience This Week's Solar Eclipse

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>On Monday, the entire US<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/solar-eclipse"> got to see&#xa0;a solar eclipse</a>.&#xa0;</p><p>During the event, many people turned their cameras to the sky to get a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-photos-2017-8">snapshot of the eclipse</a> in all its glory.&#xa0;</p><p>It was safe to take a picture through a smartphone, though the photos didn't get&#xa0;the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-take-photos-of-the-eclipse-2017-8">NASA-level quality you'd see from an angle lens. </a></p><p>Instead, the photos tended to show&#xa0;the sun blown out in a blaze of light - not the crescent shape of a partial eclipse. But in some photos, a crescent did&#xa0;appear; it was just far from the actual sun and looked blue. You can see a clear example of this in the photo on the right, which was taken by Business Insider's Emily Cohn near New York's&#xa0;Flatiron building.</p><p>The effect is&#xa0;a "lens flare," which happens when a camera is exposed to a bright light. In response, the lens captures some of the light as a reflection. Lens flares generally&#xa0;show up as little&#xa0;dots or circles, but during an eclipse&#xa0;they appear as small crescents.&#xa0;</p><p>Another crescent-shaped lens flare is visible in a photo tweeted by Senator John McCain, which his staff captured near the US Capitol.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>The same effect happened when Business Insider's Rebecca Harrington snapped a picture of the sun through welding glass. Why your picture of the eclipse might have a little blue crescent hidden in it

<p>Why settle for a single solar eclipse, when you can have a double solar eclipse?</p><p>For the first time in history, NASA has given us <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/nasas-sdo-catches-a-double-photobomb">a glimpse</a> of this rare event that you can only see from space because it requires a view of both the moon and Earth. You can see in the photo below the moon's shadow on the left and the much larger shadow of Earth at the very top:</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table full"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Last Saturday Earth had a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/where-to-see-this-weekends-solar-eclipse-2015-9">partial solar eclipse</a> that took place over the bottom half of the world in South Africa and Antarctica.<p>While most of us didn't see the event, NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory witnessed something exceptional.</p><p>For the last five years, SDO has been orbiting Earth from a distance of about 22,000 miles and snapping, on average, one picture every second of the sun's surface. It has taken over <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sdo-amazing-pictures-of-the-sun-2015-2">100 million photos</a>, so far.</p><p>But on Sept. 13, the Earth and moon got in the way.</p><p>You can see in the animation below that at first, the Earth completely obstructed SDO's view. The US won't see another until 2044.</li><li>But this rare astronomical event falls right in the middle of working hours on a Monday.</li></ul><p>Isn't it just our luck that the most anticipated astronomical event of the year falls on a Monday afternoon when most of us are working?</p><p>The first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-total-solar-eclipse-where-view-see-cities-visible-2024-2">total solar eclipse</a> in the US since 2017 is sure to be astonishing, weather permitting.</p><p>On April 8, the moon's shadow will pass over the sun and thrust hundreds of cities from Texas to Maine into darkness.</p><p>Hundreds of schools are closing or letting out early for the event.</p><p>More than 100,000 flights are expected over the next few days as people travel to the path of totality (and for spring break).</p><p>And multiple cities across the US <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-solar-eclipse-2024-niagara-region-declares-state-of-emergency-2024-3">have declared a local state of emergency or disaster</a> to prepare for the surge in visitors.</p><p>So, if you're in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/total-eclipse-solar-power-generation-states-outside-path-totality-2024-3">path of totality</a> already, you owe it to yourself to try and get at least a free hour off work to catch the total eclipse on Monday.</p><p>Or if you're within a day's drive, take the day off for a spontaneous road trip with friends. You can check <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-map-nasa-where-when-see-path-of-totality-2024-3">NASA's Eclipse map</a> to figure out where and when totality will be in your location.</p><p>Here are four reasons you can give your boss why you shouldn't be stuck at a desk for this rare cosmic event.</p><h2>1. The US won't get to experience totality again for 20 years</h2><div type="image" title="Total solar eclipse" height="3652" width="5307" msid="109042808" hostid="261"></div><p>Witnesses have described totality as an intense, profound, and even eerie experience.</p><p>David Baron, avid eclipse-chaser and author of the book "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.american-eclipse.com/author/">American Eclipse</a>," tries to see as many as he can. Over the years, he's seen eight total solar eclipses.</p><p>It was his friend, astronomer Jay Pasachoff, who first turned him into an eclipse chaser.</p><p>"He said, 'Before you die, you owe it to yourself to see a total solar eclipse,'" Baron recalled Pasachoff saying to him 30 years ago. "And he said it with such sincerity and such passion that I took him seriously, and I went to see my first total solar eclipse in 1998 in Aruba."</p><p>If you can drop everything to get to the path of totality on Monday (including your nine-to-five), you should, Baron said.</p><p>Since 1998, he's been chasing that awe-inspiring feeling that only totality can give you. The first time he saw totality, he was amazed by the sun's corona and the planets flanking it.</p><p>"I had this visceral sense that I've been transported outside our solar system to some other world, and I was looking back at the solar system" he said.</p><p>And for people living in the US, this opportunity for such an experience won't arise again until the year 2044.</p><h2>2. It's the longest and most visible total eclipse for the US in 100 years</h2><div type="image" title="NASA graphic showing the United States with a dark band stretching from Texas to Maine indicating the path of totality." height="960" width="1920" msid="109042811" hostid="261"></div><p>Several southern states — Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois — will experience a whopping four minutes or more of totality.</p><p>That's nearly a minute longer than the average total eclipse over the last century, which has been 3 minutes and 13 seconds.</p><p>Totality is longer this time because Earth will be far from the sun, but the moon will be close to the Earth, causing the moon to block out more of the sun for longer.</p><p>If you're among the 300 million Americans who don't live in the path of totality, traveling there is worthwhile, said Fred Espenak, an astrophysicist whose passion for solar eclipses earned him the nickname <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mreclipse.com/">Mr Eclipse</a>. He's seen 24 total eclipses in his lifetime, recalling his first one in 1970.</p><p>Espenak started planning his first eclipse trip seven years out when he was just 11.</p><p>"1970 rolled around, I had just gotten my driver's license, and I convinced my parents to let me take the car and drive 600 miles to totality, unchaperoned," Espenak said.</p><p>And it was worth it. "It was so overwhelming," he said.</p><p>"You're standing there and daylight suddenly vanishes in a matter of 30 seconds," he said, later adding that, "It's very dramatic."</p><h2>3. You might get to see 2 planets and a massive comet at the same time</h2><div type="image" title="The green comet 12P/Pons-Brooks streaks through the sky against the dark, starry background of space." height="1080" width="1921" msid="109042813" hostid="261"></div><p>There's a chance that eclipse watchers might get to see four <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">astronomical events</a> in one on April 8.</p><p>During the eclipse, the planets Venus and Jupiter will come into view as bright points of light just to the lower right and upper left of the eclipsed sun.</p><p>Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, a.k.a. The "<a target="_blank" href="http://businessinsider.com/how-to-see-green-devil-comet-during-total-solar-eclipse-2024-4">Devil comet,</a>" will also make a rare appearance in the sky during the eclipse.</p><p>The Devil comet only flies by Earth once every 71 years. It's unusually large — as big as Mount Everest — and glows green due to dicarbon in its chemical makeup.</p><p>The darkness afforded by totality could offer a rare opportunity to see this comet during the day, right next to the solar eclipse.</p><p>It will likely be just barely visible to the naked eye, showing up as a tiny gray smudge on the sky between the planet Jupiter and the eclipsed sun.</p><h2>4. You'll have the chance to watch massive eruptions on the sun</h2><div type="image" title="sun coronal mass ejection solar flare" height="1200" width="1200" msid="109042816" hostid="261"></div><p>What's especially unique about this year's total eclipse, is that right now the sun is near solar maximum, which occurs about every 11 years.</p><p>Solar maximum is when the sun's magnetic field flips, triggering more solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and sun spots.</p><p>What this means for eclipse watchers is that you'll have a better chance of seeing these massive, blazing jets of plasma erupt from the sun's surface that will appear as tiny neon-pink spikes.</p><p>Witnessing the power of the sun in this way is an awesome — and humbling — experience, Baron said. For him, the real reason to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-york-inmates-lawsuit-witness-upcoming-solar-eclipse-2024-4">see the solar eclipse</a> is to be reminded of the bigger picture.</p><p>"It's a useful lesson to learn over and over again — just to be grateful to be alive on this planet and to realize that while we are tiny and kind of insignificant, we're part of something enormous and amazing, and that's the universe," he said.</p><h2>Watch safely</h2><div type="image" title="sudan solar eclipse" height="1677" width="2808" msid="109042818" hostid="261"></div><p>Even if you're making last-minute arrangements to miss work for the eclipse, it's important to make sure you're properly prepared.</p><p>It's unsafe to look directly at the sun during a partial eclipse with your eyes, phone, or camera. The powerful solar radiation could permanently damage your vision or electronics.</p><p>To watch safely, you'll need to wear protective <a target="_blank" href="http://businessinsider.com/%20how-to-safely-watch-total-solar-eclipse-without-special-eclipse-glasses-2024-4">eclipse glasses</a>, use <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tips-how-to-take-pictures-photos-solar-eclipse-2024-2">protective filters</a> for your phone or camera, or use another viewing method, like looking through a welder's glass or a pinhole camera.</p><p>It's only safe to look at the eclipse directly without eye protection during totality, when the moon blots out the sun's harsh rays.</p>

The organization is trying figure out whether the travel was used as cover for Mnuchin and his wife to watch the solar eclipse.<p>The watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for details about the trip, which it said appears to have been "planned around" the eclipse, The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/mnuchin-viewed-eclipse-from-roof-of-fort-knox/2017/08/24/1b6ba9b4-8903-11e7-a50f-e0d4e6ec070a_story.html?utm_term=.738e69daca55">reported</a> on Thursday night.</p><p>Kentucky <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-when-where-how-to-watch-2017-8">was one of the best places in the US</a> to view the eclipse, because of its location just outside the path of totality. Mnuchin and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were both in Kentucky speaking at a luncheon from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. local time on Monday, The Post reported. The eclipse was set to begin at 12:59 p.m., ending at 3:51 p.m.</p><p>Such speaking engagements have been routine for McConnell, who normally takes questions afterward. A Louisville chamber of commerce spokeswoman told the newspaper that this time, McConnell and Mnuchin "went right on out."</p><p>They watched the solar eclipse from atop Fort Knox. McConnell posted a picture of himself with Mnuchin. In the photo, McConnell is seen holding the protective eyewear required for viewing the eclipse.</p><p>"The U.S. Department of the Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and I in front of the main door to the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox before we viewed the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/solareclipse?source=feed_text&amp;story_id=1507136512658368" data-ft="{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;*N&quot;,&quot;type&quot;:104}">#solareclipse </a> from the rooftop today," McConnell's Facebook caption reads.</p><p>McConnell said Mnuchin invited him to join in on the eclipse viewing at Fort Knox. "It just kind of came up as a result of a casual conversation," the Senate majority leader told reporters, according to The Post.</p><p>Mnuchin's wife, Louise Linton posted <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/steve-mnuchin-wife-instagram-louise-linton-air-force-two-2017-8">a now-infamous photo of herself and Mnuchin</a> stepping off of a government jet in Kentucky on Monday, tagging several high-end designers in the picture, which drew fierce criticism online. After one commenter called Linton "deplorable" for flaunting her wealth, Linton snapped back, calling the commenter "adorably out of touch."
