During the <keyword id="188" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="diwali" source="Orion">Diwali</keyword> festival on October 25, there will be a partial solar eclipse which will be visible from the city as well as from most parts of the country, astrophysicist Debi Prasad Duari said. The eastern metropolis, however, will be able to witness the partial solar eclipse, the second in 2022, for a very small duration, the celestial phenomenon will be better observed in the northern and western regions of the country, he said. <br /><br /> The eclipse will not be observed from northeastern <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> as the celestial phenomenon will be occurring after sunset in those regions, Duari said. <br /><br /> Apart from India, the October 25 partial cosmic affair will be visible from most parts of Europe, northern Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, Duari elaborated. <br /><br /> "The partial solar eclipse will begin in Iceland at around 14:29 hours IST and will be seen at its maximum from Russia at 16:30 hours (IST). It will end at around 18:32 hours (IST) over the Arabian Sea," he told PTI while sharing information on the celestial event. <br /><br /> "The eastern part of the country will see the partial eclipse only marginally, that also during the sunset. The northern and western parts of the country are better locations to observe the partial eclipse with a better view and for a longer period of time."<br /><br /> "During the new <keyword id="42440" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="moon" source="Orion">moon</keyword> (Amavasya) the <keyword id="24879" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="sun" source="Orion">Sun</keyword>, Moon and Earth almost come in a linear configuration, whereby from earth we can see the moon without any sunlight falling on it. But at times, as on October 25, the Sun, Moon and Earth will almost be on the same plane resulting in the moon appearing to cover the Sun partially for a period of time causing a partial Solar Eclipse," he explained. <br /><br /> In and around the metropolis, the partial eclipse will begin at around 16:52 hours, the maximum occurring at 17:01 hours, and will cease to be seen at 17:03 hours at the sunset, Duari said. <br /><br /> "Even at the maximum eclipse, only 4 per cent of the lighted disc of the setting Sun will be covered by the Moon," he said. <br /><br /> In the north Bengal town of Siliguri, the celestial phenomenon will be occurring between 16:41 and 16:59 hours and during the maximum eclipse (at around 16:56 hours) about 8.91 per cent of the Sun will be covered by the Moon's disc, Duari stated. <br /><br /> "In New Delhi, it will commence at around 16:29 hours and end with the sunset at 18:09 hours with the maximum eclipse to occur at 17:42 hours when the Sun will be obscured by the Moon by an amount of only 24.5 per cent," Duari said. <br /><br /> Jaisalmer in Rajasthan will experience the eclipse from 16:26 hours to 18:09 hours with the maximum at around 17:30 hours. when the disc of the Sun will be obscured by 42.5 per cent. <br /><br /> "In Mumbai, the eclipse will begin at 16:49 hours with the maximum occurring at around 17:42 hours. It will end at 18:09 hours when the Sun appears to go down the Arabian Sea at sunset. Here, the Sun's disc will be covered by about 24.5 per cent," he added. <br /><br /> In southern and central India, the eclipse will be again observed just before sunset with Nagpur experiencing the eclipse from 16:49 to 17:42 hours. In Bengaluru, the eclipse will begin at 17:12 hours, reaching its maximum at 17:49 hours and ending at 17:55 hours during sunset. Chennai will have the eclipse from 17:14 to 17:44 hours, the astrophysicist said. <br /><br /> The next major solar eclipse to be visible from India will be an annular eclipse on May 21, 2031, when the annularity can be observed from a narrow patch of land in south India, he said. <br /><br /> Three years later, on March 20, 2034, the next total solar eclipse will be visible from India and the totality will be observed from the northernmost part of Kashmir. <br /><br /> On both occasions, the whole country will observe a partial eclipse of varying magnitude depending upon its geographical location, Duari said. <br /><br /> Another partial eclipse can be seen from the northern part of India on June 1, 2030. <br /><br /> Referring to the harm caused to the eyes by Sun's rays during an eclipse, Duari cautioned the sky enthusiasts to take "extreme precaution" while observing it. <br /><br /> "Even if the degree of the partial eclipse is not appreciable in most of the country, extreme precaution has to be taken by everybody who wants to observe this cosmic event. Partial solar eclipse on October 25 will be visible from most parts of India

<p>A partial solar eclipse, like the one happening this Thursday, will not be visible from across the entire US again until <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-the-2014-solar-eclipse-2014-10">the year 2023</a>. Since the next one is nearly a decade away, you'll want to get the most out of this one.</p>
<p>Here are five ways you can have fun in the eclipsed sun this Thursday.</p>
<p><em>Note: Even though this week's event is only a partial eclipse, you should still protect your eyes from the sun's harmful light. If you want to look directly at the eclipsed sun, make sure you're looking through <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00712I3JA/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2/175-7199317-3650152?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&amp;pf_rd_r=0T2BQ3QQGH8V697PKM9A&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_p=1944687682&amp;pf_rd_i=B00DS7S52W">a solar filter</a>, something that's much stronger than ordinary sunglasses. <h2>1. Look Through An Object</h2>
<p>As the sun starts to disappear behind the moon, take a look around for spots where light is passing through an object, such as light passing through leaves on a tree. This is an image where the leaves act as a pinhole camera that projects the image of the eclipsed sun onto a nearby wall.</p>

<h2>2. Look Through Your Hands</h2>
<p>If you can't find any natural pinholes, then you can make one yourself with your hands. Spread your fingers apart and lay one hand over the other, so your fingers look like a large waffle fry.The light will pass in between the slits in your hand and project the crescent sun onto the ground, like in the image below.</p>

<h2>3. Look Through A Strainer</h2>
<p>Another great way to view the eclipse is with some of your kitchen utensils. A draining spoon or a pasta strainer makes fantastic pinholes that will project dozens of solar eclipse shadows for you to enjoy.</p>

<p>A pair of binoculars or a telescope is the best way to see a solar eclipse up close and personal. <p>Nothing really special is happening to the sun during a <keyword id="6699518" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar-Eclipse">solar eclipse</keyword>, the moon is just lined up with it, blocking most of the light radiating from our star.</p>
<p>But this composite view shows an image of the sun as it looked behind the moon, combined with the outflow of the <keyword id="45681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar">solar</keyword> corona - the charged particles flowing out of the sun's surface. After 93 minutes, the event will finish up in South Carolina. If you're not going to see the total effect this year, though, your next chance is not too far away.</p><p><span>After the August 2017 solar eclipse, the US will see another solar eclipse on</span><span> October 14, 2023. That one will be annular, however - which means the edge of the sun will remain visible as a bright ring around the moon. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>NASA's <a href="http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/IOTD/view.php?id=87675&amp;eocn=home&amp;eoci=iotd_title">Deep Space Climate Observatory</a> (DSCOVR) captured these amazing images of the moon's shadow crossing the western Pacific during <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/photos-videos-total-solar-eclipse-nasa-2016-3">Wednesday's total solar eclipse</a>.</p><p>The GIF above was compiled from 13 images taken by the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) and Cassegrain telescope aboard the satellite.</p><p>DSCOVR is parked in space a million miles away, positioned between the Earth and the Sun to get a constant, sunlit view of our planet.</p><p>The satellite normally takes a shot every 108 minutes, but for the March 8-9 eclipse, the EPIC team snapped one every 20 minutes, capturing the entire four-hour-and-20-minute eclipse in 13 images.</p><p>NASA also uses the DSCOVR satellite to monitor how much solar energy is emitted off of the Earth into space. A satellite 1 million miles from Earth recorded the total solar eclipse and the video is epic

It will be visible over parts of Chile, Argentina, and the south Pacific Ocean.</li><li>The celestial event will be more difficult to witness than the 2017 <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lunar-eclipse-vs-solar-eclipse-difference-2018-7">eclipse</a> that was visible in the US, since the path of totality is limited to a narrow strip of land in South America and occurs late in the afternoon.</li><li>Solar eclipses help scientists study <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-totality-corona-simulated-pictures-2017-8">the solar corona</a>: <span>a sheath of hot gases that extends thousands of miles out from the sun's surface.</span></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>. </li></ul><p>At 4:39 p.m. local time tomorrow, July 2, fish of the south Pacific and some lucky people in southern Chile and Argentina will be plunged into rare afternoon darkness.</p><p>It will be the first total solar eclipse since August 21, 2017, and the only only celestial event of its kind in 2019.</p><p><span>During a total solar eclipse, the moon passes between Earth and the sun, casting a small, dark shadow on our planet. For those watching on Earth, the moon appears to cover the sun, with a ring of the sun's light surrounding the moon. Looking directly at that light requires special glasses to protect the eyes from the sun's brightness.</span></p><p>The eclipse's path of totality - in which the sun is fully blocked from view by the moon - is an ample length of 6,000 miles, though most of that is over the Pacific Ocean and a narrow band of Chile and Argentina. </p><p><span>Viewers in South America will experience totality for about 2.5 minutes, roughly the same duration as the 2017 eclipse that crossed the continental US. </span><span>La Serena, a city on Chile's western coast, will be the first to go dark.</span></p><p><span>Totality will last the longest over a remote part of the Pacific Ocean west of South America, where the sun will go dark for <a href="https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2019Jul02Tgoogle.html">4 minutes and 32 seconds</a>. (That point is represented by the black sun in the map below.) </span></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://xjubier.free.fr/en/site_pages/solar_eclipses/TSE_2019_GoogleMapFull.html?Lat=-35.19542&amp;Lng=-58.51548&amp;Zoom=4&amp;LC=1">NASA/Terra Metrics</a></span></p><p class="caption">Projected path of the 2019 total solar eclipse.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The late timing for tomorrow's eclipse means that totality occurs will occur about one hour and 18 minutes before sunset, when the sun is low in the sky - just 13 degrees above the horizon.</p><p>That could make viewing the event a bit challenging, since low-lying clouds could obscure the spectacle. Researchers will also need to peer through more of Earth's hazy atmosphere to get a clear image of what's happening in the sky.</p><p>Totality represents a unique opportunity for scientists who study the sun. It's the only time that the solar corona - the sheath of high-speed, super-hot particles that ensconce the sun - is visible to onlookers.</p><p>Occasionally, the corona spits out bursts of scorching hot plasma, which can be between<span> <a href="https://www.nso.edu/for-public/sun-science/corona/">1.7 million </a><a href="https://www.nso.edu/for-public/sun-science/corona/">degrees Fahrenheit</a><a href="https://www.nso.edu/for-public/sun-science/corona/"> and more than 17 million degrees</a> -</span> hotter than the surface of the sun itself. These bursts, called coronal mass ejections, can hurl towards Earth <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/phenomena/coronal-mass-ejections">at speeds of 1,384 miles per second</a>. A total solar eclipse will be visible on July 2 for the first time since 2017 - here's who can see it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Millions of people in the US will be able to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">see a total solar eclipse</a> on April 8.</li><li>Some highly populated US cities are right in the path of the eclipse, so people can easily view it.</li></ul><p>Millions of people will be able to don <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-know-if-solar-eclipse-glasses-are-safe-2017-8"><u>protective glasses</u></a> and view a spectacular total solar eclipse on Monday, starting around 1 p.m. CT.</p><p>If this sounds familiar, it's because in 2017, a 70-mile-wide band of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-2017-total-solar-eclipse-gatherings-across-the-us-2017-8">the US saw a total solar eclipse</a>, while many other areas saw a partial eclipse. People drove across states and gathered near planetariums just to see those fleeting minutes when, in the middle of the day, the sky went dark.</p><p>But the total eclipse coming next week will be even cooler, excited NASA <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comet-heading-earth-bright-outshine-stars-scientists-c-2023-a32023-3">scientists</a> told reporters at an American Geophysical Union meeting in December.</p><p>"Those of us who've seen eclipses know that you want to see your next one," Kelly Korreck, NASA's program manager for the 2024 solar eclipse, said during a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xrjy_q1AYo"><u>roundtable</u></a> at the meeting.</p><p>She added that having one in such recent memory likely has many people excited for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/helio-year-sun-solar-system-probe-eclipse-events-2024-1">this year's</a>.</p><p>While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/every-total-solar-eclipse-until-2040-video-2017-8"><u>total solar eclipses</u></a> aren't exactly rare, there are a few circumstances around this upcoming event that make it unique, from its path across the US to an abundance of solar activity to a plethora of scientific projects that NASA and others have planned for the few minutes when the moon will seem to cover the sun.</p><h2>Over 30 million people will be able to see the total solar eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A cheerleader smiles as she looks up at the sky holding eclipse glasses." height="1333" width="2000" msid="107014321" hostid="261"></div><p>There are three <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-solar-eclipse-2017-8"><u>types of solar eclipses</u></a>:</p><ol><li><p>an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-solar-eclipse-annular-ring-of-fire-where-how-watch-2023-10">annular eclipse</a> appears as a bright ring around the moon</p></li><li><p>a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-stunning-images-show-sun-obscured-in-rare-event-2021-6"><u>partial eclipse</u></a> only partly blocks the sun</p></li><li><p>in a total eclipse, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">the moon</a> seems to cover the sun entirely</p></li></ol><p>In 2017, the continental US had its <a target="_blank" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-next-solar-eclipse-when-was-last-solar-eclipse-2017-8"><u>first coast-to-coast total eclipse</u></a> since 1918. Portions of 14 states were in the path, but populated cities like Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina, were not.</p><p>This year, more people will be able to see the eclipse without having to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-total-solar-eclipse-where-view-see-cities-visible-2024-2">travel</a>.</p><p>The path spreads from Mexico to northeastern Canada.</p><div type="image" title="usa map with band showing path of total solar eclipse from Texas to Maine" height="960" width="1920" msid="108309749" hostid="261"></div><p>"This is going to be the most populated eclipse in the US, with 31.5 million people able to just walk outside of their homes and experience this event," Korreck said.</p><p>Dallas, Cleveland, and Indianapolis are all positioned for prime total eclipse viewing.</p><h2>The eclipse will last slightly longer than the last one did</h2><p>Depending on your location, you'll have about 3 to 4 minutes to watch the moon blot out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunspots-15-times-size-of-earth-solar-storm-into-view-2023-11">the sun</a>.</p><p>That peak of the eclipse, called totality, will last slightly longer than the one in 2017 did, Korreck said.</p><p>US residents who miss this year's eclipse will have to wait another couple of decades for a similar event. The next total solar eclipses visible in the contiguous US will be in 2044 and 2045, but neither will cut through Cleveland or Indianapolis.</p><p>"You're not going to get another eclipse for quite a while," Korreck said.</p><h2>An active sun should make for incredible viewing</h2><p>In 2017, the sun was fairly quiet during the eclipse. As it approaches its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-maximum-could-sooner-than-expected-2023-6"><u>solar maximum</u></a>, it's been spitting out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2"><u>solar flares</u></a>.</p><p>Korreck hopes to see a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-footage-shows-sun-solar-activity-increasing-2023-5"><u>coronal mass ejection</u></a> during the eclipse. CMEs are high-speed blobs of plasma that erupt out of the sun's corona, or outer layer.</p><p>"You would see that kind of inky mass just leave the sun at that point in time," Korreck said. "So it would be pretty spectacular."</p><div type="image" title="solar eclipse" height="683" width="1024" msid="107014326" hostid="261"></div><p>If that happens, Korreck said there should be increased <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-aurora-borealis-visible-17-states-including-new-york-2023-7"><u>aurora borealis activity</u></a> a few days later. Even if there's no CME, the images could be more dynamic than in 2017, with more whisp-like prominences radiating from the sun.</p><p>"It should be a very <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-images-reveal-creepy-threads-holes-light-bridge-solar-surface-2023-5">complex-looking sun</a>," Korreck said.</p><h2>Balloons, rockets, and citizen scientists will be tracking the eclipse</h2><p>There's a reason solar eclipses are a big deal in the scientific community. "They provide you with the opportunity to do experiments that you cannot do otherwise," Nour E. Raouafi, an astrophysicist with Johns Hopkins University, said during the roundtable.</p><p>An eclipse in 1919 <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/testing-general-relativity"><u>proved</u></a> Albert Einstein's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/albert-einsteins-theory-of-relativity-notes-sold-for-13-million-2021-11"><u>theory of relativity</u></a>, he said.</p><div type="image" title="huddle of people look up toward the sun while holding pink eclipse glasses up to their eyes in front of a wall of sand colored bricks in desert landscape" height="1500" width="2250" msid="107014328" hostid="261"></div><p>This will probably be the most observed total solar eclipse in history.</p><p>That's because NASA and other institutions will be using radar, balloons, spacecraft, and jets to perform experiments and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-solar-eclipse-nasa-perseverance-rover-phobos-sun-2023-10"><u>gather data during the eclipse</u></a>. NASA is interested in tracking changes to density, wind speed, and temperatures at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-rockets-holes-in-ionosphere-2023-11"><u>ionosphere</u></a> — part of the Earth's upper atmosphere — during the event.</p><p>Unlike the 2017 eclipse, there are now two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-on-mission-to-touch-the-sun-in-milestone-for-space-exploration-2023-12">sun-scrutinizing spacecraft</a> circling our star. It's an opportunity NASA has never had before — to monitor the sun up close, from two different space observatories, while instruments here on Earth study the eclipse.</p><p>That should give scientists more comprehensive eclipse data than they've ever had.</p><p>There are tons of <a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/citizen-science/"><u>citizen scientist projects</u></a> taking place, too. Washington, An astronomer has spotted a <keyword id="10464386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="little-tiny-speck">little tiny speck</keyword> flying past the Sun which is a recently discovered <keyword id="10464385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rare-comet">rare comet</keyword>, as the world witnessed the <keyword id="1450436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-solar-eclipse">total solar eclipse</keyword> this month.<br /><br />This comet was first spotted in satellite data by Thai amateur astronomer Worachate Boonplod on the NASA-funded <keyword id="10464387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sungrazer-project">Sungrazer Project</keyword>, as Chile and Argentina witnessed the total solar eclipse on December 14, reports NASA.<br /><br />Around the time the eclipse image was taken, the comet was travelling at roughly 7,24,205 kms per hour, about 4.3 million kms from the Sun's surface.<br /><br />The comet was around 50 feet in diameter -- about the length of a semi truck.
