<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronal-hole-on-sun-blasts-solar-wind-toward-earth-2023-3">The sun</a> has a big year in 2024, starting with a total solar eclipse across the US.</li><li>As the sun builds to maximum activity, watch out for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-sky-friday-us-solar-winds-giant-hole-sun-2023-3">the northern lights</a> too.</li></ul><p>The sun was showing off all last year, with dramatic eruptions, sunspots, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/second-giant-coronal-hole-sun-solar-winds-space-weather-aurora-2023-3">giant "holes,"</a> and even a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-solar-tornado-plasma-2023-3">14-earths-high tornado of plasma</a>. But 2024 may be our star's biggest year yet.</p><p>That's what giddy <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-polar-vortex-video-from-solar-plasma-break-2023-2">NASA</a> scientists told reporters at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco in December. In true NASA fashion, they're calling it the "heliophysics big year."</p><div type="image" title="solar flare" height="627" width="1089" msid="107672113" hostid="261" sizebytes="43108"></div><p>One of the main events this year will be a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-2024-total-solar-eclipse-cool-best-special-nasa-2024-1">historically cool total solar eclipse crossing the US in April</a>. It's estimated up to 7.4 million people will travel to the path of totality to witness the rare event.</p><p>Another exciting event involves NASA's prime solar probe, which is set to skim <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunspots-15-times-size-of-earth-solar-storm-into-view-2023-11">the sun's surface</a> in December, flying closer than any previous spacecraft.</p><div type="image" title="total solar eclipse 2019" height="1290" width="1960" msid="107188970" hostid="261"></div><p>Meanwhile, the Northern and Southern Lights are sure to have an impressive year, as well.</p><p>Already, we've seen beautiful aurora reach as far south as Arizona within the last year. And as<strong> </strong><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2">stormy activity on the sun,</a> which helps spark aurora worldwide, is set to increase, we could continue to see the Northern Lights illuminate skies across the US at unusually low latitudes.</p><p>For viewers in Australia, New Zealand, and South America, the Southern Lights (aurora australis) will surely make spectacular displays too.</p><div type="image" title="ribbons of green pink purple northern lights stretch across the night sky above homes and lights of a sprawling town" height="1500" width="2250" msid="107188973" hostid="261"></div><p>It will be about 11 years — a full <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/next-solar-maximum-2025-what-expect-cycle-2023-4">solar cycle</a> — before the aurora is so active again.</p><p>"<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-maximum-could-sooner-than-expected-2023-6">The sun</a> touches everything, and we are challenging you to experience the sun in as many ways as possible," Kelly Korreck, NASA's program manager for the upcoming eclipse, said during the AGU roundtable.</p><h2>The sun's big year kicks off with a total eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A cheerleader smiles as she looks up at the sky holding eclipse glasses." height="1333" width="2000" msid="107672115" hostid="261" sizebytes="202708"></div><p>While the rest of us put on our <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">eclipse glasses</a> or look out for the pink and green ribbons of the aurora, astronomers will be busy at work. This year's solar events are a huge scientific opportunity.</p><p>For example, NASA is launching three rockets during the April total solar eclipse, loaded with instruments to study how the sudden darkness changes our upper atmosphere.</p><p>A total solar eclipse offers scientists a unique opportunity to observe the corona — the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere. The corona is over 100 times hotter than the sun's surface, but scientists can't explain why and it's one of the biggest mysteries in our solar system. Because the moon blocks the main disc of the sun during an eclipse, only the corona is visible.</p><p>NASA's Parker Solar Probe and the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter will also be watching the eclipse from two different vantage points in space, as they orbit close to the sun. That extra data can help scientists get 3D observations of the corona, as well as validate measurements from Earth-based observatories.</p><p>That's just one fleeting moment of the sun's big year. Throughout 2024, as solar activity builds, countless observatories and physicists will be watching closely.</p><h2>The sun will get more and more active</h2><div type="image" title="X-class solar flare erupting off the sun." height="747" width="800" msid="107188979" hostid="261"></div><p>When <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-flare-from-sunspot-caused-widespread-radio-blackouts-earth-2023-5">the sun belches</a> plasma and charged particles into space, they can speed toward Earth, travel down our planet's magnetic field lines toward the poles, and interact with molecules in our atmosphere to make the aurora. They can also bump satellites out of orbit and surge through technologies on the ground, triggering radio blackouts and meddling with GPS.</p><div type="image" title="solar flare red orange plasma erupting from the sun's surface" height="1500" width="1500" msid="107672116" hostid="261" sizebytes="153010"></div><p>There's always a steady flow of this "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-discovered-solar-wind-disappear-around-mars-2023-12">solar wind</a>," but eruptions on the sun can send a powerful flood of solar wind careening toward our planet. That's what scientists call space weather. These storms are happening more and more as the sun climbs toward peak activity.</p><div type="image" title="Solar Wind" height="360" width="640" msid="107188982" hostid="261"></div><p>People on Earth are safe from these blasts of solar activity, with the exception of rare cases where they might cause power or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titanic-theory-suggests-aurora-borealis-solar-storm-affected-crash-2020-9">radio blackouts</a>. But as NASA and other space agencies send humans back to the moon and on to Mars, space weather will become a safety issue for them.</p><p>Studying solar eruptions and flares can help scientists forecast space weather better in the future. That could be crucial for long-distance spaceflights.</p><p>"If we want to win the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-up-the-ante-space-race-sky-ladder-to-mars-2021-6">race to Mars</a> then we have to have awareness of space weather all over the place," Nour Raouafi, a lead scientist for the Parker Solar Probe, said at the roundtable.</p><h2>NASA to almost land on the sun at the end of the year</h2><div type="image" title="nasa parker solar probe plus sun mission illustration" height="1687" width="3000" msid="107188983" hostid="261"></div><p>The "crown jewel" of the sun's big year comes on December 24, though, Raouafi said. That's when the Parker Solar Probe will fly closer to the sun than any spacecraft has ever gone, about 3.8 million miles from its surface.</p><p>For comparison, Earth is 93 million miles from the sun.</p><p>On this close flyby, the probe will face unfathomably extreme heat and radiation, with temperatures as high as 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit.</p><p>Collecting data so close to the source of the solar wind will help scientists understand how it forms. It will also fuel the study of the corona.</p><p>"This is a monumental achievement for all of humanity. This is equivalent to the moon landing of '69. Now we are basically almost landing on a star," Raouafi said.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Millions of people in the US will be able to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-where-when-see-solar-eclipse-united-states-nasa-map-2023-3">see a total solar eclipse</a> on April 8.</li><li>Some highly populated US cities are right in the path of the eclipse, so people can easily view it.</li></ul><p>Millions of people will be able to don <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-2017-how-to-know-if-solar-eclipse-glasses-are-safe-2017-8"><u>protective glasses</u></a> and view a spectacular total solar eclipse on Monday, starting around 1 p.m. CT.</p><p>If this sounds familiar, it's because in 2017, a 70-mile-wide band of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-of-2017-total-solar-eclipse-gatherings-across-the-us-2017-8">the US saw a total solar eclipse</a>, while many other areas saw a partial eclipse. People drove across states and gathered near planetariums just to see those fleeting minutes when, in the middle of the day, the sky went dark.</p><p>But the total eclipse coming next week will be even cooler, excited NASA <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/comet-heading-earth-bright-outshine-stars-scientists-c-2023-a32023-3">scientists</a> told reporters at an American Geophysical Union meeting in December.</p><p>"Those of us who've seen eclipses know that you want to see your next one," Kelly Korreck, NASA's program manager for the 2024 solar eclipse, said during a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xrjy_q1AYo"><u>roundtable</u></a> at the meeting.</p><p>She added that having one in such recent memory likely has many people excited for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/helio-year-sun-solar-system-probe-eclipse-events-2024-1">this year's</a>.</p><p>While <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/every-total-solar-eclipse-until-2040-video-2017-8"><u>total solar eclipses</u></a> aren't exactly rare, there are a few circumstances around this upcoming event that make it unique, from its path across the US to an abundance of solar activity to a plethora of scientific projects that NASA and others have planned for the few minutes when the moon will seem to cover the sun.</p><h2>Over 30 million people will be able to see the total solar eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="A cheerleader smiles as she looks up at the sky holding eclipse glasses." height="1333" width="2000" msid="107014321" hostid="261"></div><p>There are three <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-a-solar-eclipse-2017-8"><u>types of solar eclipses</u></a>:</p><ol><li><p>an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/october-solar-eclipse-annular-ring-of-fire-where-how-watch-2023-10">annular eclipse</a> appears as a bright ring around the moon</p></li><li><p>a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-eclipse-stunning-images-show-sun-obscured-in-rare-event-2021-6"><u>partial eclipse</u></a> only partly blocks the sun</p></li><li><p>in a total eclipse, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mind-boggling-nasa-photo-shows-moon-distance-from-earth-2022-10">the moon</a> seems to cover the sun entirely</p></li></ol><p>In 2017, the continental US had its <a target="_blank" href="http://www.businessinsider.com/when-is-next-solar-eclipse-when-was-last-solar-eclipse-2017-8"><u>first coast-to-coast total eclipse</u></a> since 1918. Portions of 14 states were in the path, but populated cities like Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina, were not.</p><p>This year, more people will be able to see the eclipse without having to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/great-american-total-solar-eclipse-where-view-see-cities-visible-2024-2">travel</a>.</p><p>The path spreads from Mexico to northeastern Canada.</p><div type="image" title="usa map with band showing path of total solar eclipse from Texas to Maine" height="960" width="1920" msid="108309749" hostid="261"></div><p>"This is going to be the most populated eclipse in the US, with 31.5 million people able to just walk outside of their homes and experience this event," Korreck said.</p><p>Dallas, Cleveland, and Indianapolis are all positioned for prime total eclipse viewing.</p><h2>The eclipse will last slightly longer than the last one did</h2><p>Depending on your location, you'll have about 3 to 4 minutes to watch the moon blot out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sunspots-15-times-size-of-earth-solar-storm-into-view-2023-11">the sun</a>.</p><p>That peak of the eclipse, called totality, will last slightly longer than the one in 2017 did, Korreck said.</p><p>US residents who miss this year's eclipse will have to wait another couple of decades for a similar event. The next total solar eclipses visible in the contiguous US will be in 2044 and 2045, but neither will cut through Cleveland or Indianapolis.</p><p>"You're not going to get another eclipse for quite a while," Korreck said.</p><h2>An active sun should make for incredible viewing</h2><p>In 2017, the sun was fairly quiet during the eclipse. As it approaches its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-maximum-could-sooner-than-expected-2023-6"><u>solar maximum</u></a>, it's been spitting out <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2"><u>solar flares</u></a>.</p><p>Korreck hopes to see a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-footage-shows-sun-solar-activity-increasing-2023-5"><u>coronal mass ejection</u></a> during the eclipse. CMEs are high-speed blobs of plasma that erupt out of the sun's corona, or outer layer.</p><p>"You would see that kind of inky mass just leave the sun at that point in time," Korreck said. "So it would be pretty spectacular."</p><div type="image" title="solar eclipse" height="683" width="1024" msid="107014326" hostid="261"></div><p>If that happens, Korreck said there should be increased <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/northern-lights-aurora-borealis-visible-17-states-including-new-york-2023-7"><u>aurora borealis activity</u></a> a few days later. Even if there's no CME, the images could be more dynamic than in 2017, with more whisp-like prominences radiating from the sun.</p><p>"It should be a very <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-images-reveal-creepy-threads-holes-light-bridge-solar-surface-2023-5">complex-looking sun</a>," Korreck said.</p><h2>Balloons, rockets, and citizen scientists will be tracking the eclipse</h2><p>There's a reason solar eclipses are a big deal in the scientific community. "They provide you with the opportunity to do experiments that you cannot do otherwise," Nour E. Raouafi, an astrophysicist with Johns Hopkins University, said during the roundtable.</p><p>An eclipse in 1919 <a target="_blank" href="https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/testing-general-relativity"><u>proved</u></a> Albert Einstein's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/albert-einsteins-theory-of-relativity-notes-sold-for-13-million-2021-11"><u>theory of relativity</u></a>, he said.</p><div type="image" title="huddle of people look up toward the sun while holding pink eclipse glasses up to their eyes in front of a wall of sand colored bricks in desert landscape" height="1500" width="2250" msid="107014328" hostid="261"></div><p>This will probably be the most observed total solar eclipse in history.</p><p>That's because NASA and other institutions will be using radar, balloons, spacecraft, and jets to perform experiments and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-solar-eclipse-nasa-perseverance-rover-phobos-sun-2023-10"><u>gather data during the eclipse</u></a>. NASA is interested in tracking changes to density, wind speed, and temperatures at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/spacex-rockets-holes-in-ionosphere-2023-11"><u>ionosphere</u></a> — part of the Earth's upper atmosphere — during the event.</p><p>Unlike the 2017 eclipse, there are now two <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-on-mission-to-touch-the-sun-in-milestone-for-space-exploration-2023-12">sun-scrutinizing spacecraft</a> circling our star. It's an opportunity NASA has never had before — to monitor the sun up close, from two different space observatories, while instruments here on Earth study the eclipse.</p><p>That should give scientists more comprehensive eclipse data than they've ever had.</p><p>There are tons of <a target="_blank" href="https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/citizen-science/"><u>citizen scientist projects</u></a> taking place, too. Why NASA says the total solar eclipse on Monday will be way cooler than any before it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An annular <keyword id="6699518" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="solar-eclipse">solar eclipse</keyword> will form in the sky at 6:53 a.m. ET on Thursday.</li><li>The phenomenon is marked by a bring circle of light, or 'ring of fire,' around the <keyword id="42440" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Moon">moon</keyword>'s edge.</li><li>The sight is partially visible in the northeastern US but best seen from Canada and Russia.</li></ul><p>A solar eclipse will be visible in the sky at 6:53 a.m. ET on Thursday, as the moon passes between the <keyword id="6359982" type="LOCATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="earth">Earth</keyword> and the <keyword id="24879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sun">sun</keyword>.</p><p>During a total solar eclipse, the moon blocks the sun entirely. But Thursday's spectacle is an annular solar eclipse, which occurs when the moon is too far from Earth - and therefore too small in the sky - to fully cover the sun. That leaves room for a brilliant halo of light, often referred to as a "ring of fire" or annulus, surrounding the moon.</p><p>The phenomenon won't be visible everywhere: Parts of Canada, Greenland, and Russia will have the best views. People in the northeastern US, northern Europe, and northern Asia will be able to see a partial solar eclipse, which will look as if someone has taken a bite out of the sun.</p><p>This will be the only annular solar eclipse this year, though it's the first of two solar eclipses in 2021. REUTERS/Willy Kurniawan" height="3965" width="5906" msid="83235376" hostid="261"></div><p>The glowing "ring of fire" in an annular eclipse is only visible for a short time: anywhere from a fraction of a second to over 12 minutes. Last year's annular solar eclipse lasted just under 90 seconds.</p><p>Depending on your vantage point, you may still be able to see a band of light form along the moon's edge, then disappear over the span of roughly three hours. </p><p>Total solar eclipses usually happen every five to six months, but annular solar eclipses only occur every year or two. That's because they require a precise set of conditions: To start, the sun, moon, and Earth must all be aligned. The moon must also be close to its apogee, or farthest point from Earth - around 252,700 miles away. </p><p>In any solar eclipse, the moon's shadow carves a path across the Earth. During a total solar eclipse, the darkest part of the moon's shadow, called the umbra, hits the Earth. But during an annular solar eclipse - when the moon is farther from Earth - our planet instead passes through a part of the moon's shadow called the antumbra, which isn't quite as dark.</p><h2>You'll need special glasses to stare directly at the eclipse</h2><div type="image" title="solar eclipse" height="683" width="1024" msid="83235382" hostid="261"></div><p>It's dangerous to stare directly at any solar eclipse for the same reasons it's dangerous to look at the sun: The bright light can damage cells in your retina.</p><p>This may ultimately distort your vision, resulting in blind spots or trouble making out shapes. Your eyes can also become watery and sore. Sometimes, these side effects won't show up for a few hours or even a few days.</p><p>So if you want to view Thursday's solar eclipse in person, <keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> recommends wearing a pair of "eclipse glasses" with special solar filters. (The American Astronomical Society has <a href="https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters">a list of reputable manufacturers</a>.) You can also purchase a pair of welder's goggles in shade 12 or higher.</p><p>Sunglasses aren't a proper substitute - they transmit thousands of times too much sunlight, according to NASA.</p><p>The eclipse will also be <a href="https://www.timeanddate.com/live/eclipse-solar-2021-june-10?ftag=YHF4eb9d17">livestreamed</a> on Thursday for those looking to watch from home.</p><p>After this, the next annular solar eclipse won't happen until October 14, 2023. In the meantime, the world can look forward to December's total solar eclipse, plus two partial solar eclipses in 2022.</p>

A 'ring of fire' solar eclipse will be visible in the sky on Thursday. Here's how to spot the rare event.

Washington, An astronomer has spotted a <keyword id="10464386" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="little-tiny-speck">little tiny speck</keyword> flying past the Sun which is a recently discovered <keyword id="10464385" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rare-comet">rare comet</keyword>, as the world witnessed the <keyword id="1450436" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-solar-eclipse">total solar eclipse</keyword> this month.<br /><br />This comet was first spotted in satellite data by Thai amateur astronomer Worachate Boonplod on the NASA-funded <keyword id="10464387" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="sungrazer-project">Sungrazer Project</keyword>, as Chile and Argentina witnessed the total solar eclipse on December 14, reports NASA.<br /><br />Around the time the eclipse image was taken, the comet was travelling at roughly 7,24,205 kms per hour, about 4.3 million kms from the Sun's surface.<br /><br />The comet was around 50 feet in diameter -- about the length of a semi truck. For those watching on Earth, the moon appears to cover the sun, with a ring of the sun's light surrounding the moon. Looking directly at that light requires special glasses to protect the eyes from the sun's brightness.</span></p><p>The eclipse's path of totality - in which the sun is fully blocked from view by the moon - is an ample length of 6,000 miles, though most of that is over the Pacific Ocean and a narrow band of Chile and Argentina. </p><p><span>Viewers in South America will experience totality for about 2.5 minutes, roughly the same duration as the 2017 eclipse that crossed the continental US. </span><span>La Serena, a city on Chile's western coast, will be the first to go dark.</span></p><p><span>Totality will last the longest over a remote part of the Pacific Ocean west of South America, where the sun will go dark for <a href="https://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2019Jul02Tgoogle.html">4 minutes and 32 seconds</a>. Researchers will also need to peer through more of Earth's hazy atmosphere to get a clear image of what's happening in the sky.</p><p>Totality represents a unique opportunity for scientists who study the sun. It's the only time that the solar corona - the sheath of high-speed, super-hot particles that ensconce the sun - is visible to onlookers.</p><p>Occasionally, the corona spits out bursts of scorching hot plasma, which can be between<span> <a href="https://www.nso.edu/for-public/sun-science/corona/">1.7 million </a><a href="https://www.nso.edu/for-public/sun-science/corona/">degrees Fahrenheit</a><a href="https://www.nso.edu/for-public/sun-science/corona/"> and more than 17 million degrees</a> -</span> hotter than the surface of the sun itself. These bursts, called coronal mass ejections, can hurl towards Earth <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/phenomena/coronal-mass-ejections">at speeds of 1,384 miles per second</a>. A total solar eclipse will be visible on July 2 for the first time since 2017 - here's who can see it

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An eruption on the <keyword id="24879" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sun">sun</keyword>'s surface sent plasma and charged particles speeding towards Earth this week.</li><li>Forecasts suggested that this <keyword id="913025" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Coronal-Mass-Ejection">coronal mass ejection</keyword> would reach our planet Wednesday as a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gray-whales-stranded-during-solar-storms-cant-navigate-properly-2020-2">solar storm</a> that could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titanic-theory-suggests-aurora-borealis-solar-storm-affected-crash-2020-9">interfere with radio</a>, GPS, and power grids.</li><li>There was a possibility the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-types-of-aurora-upending-understanding-of-polar-lights-2020-9">aurora borealis</a> could be visible from Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon, but in the end, the northern lights didn't appear that far south.</li><li>The sun is entering a period of increasing violent activity, so more opportunities for the northern US to see the aurora are likely.</li></ul><p>An eruption on the sun this week prompted warnings from the <keyword id="108482" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="National-Weather-Service">National Weather Service</keyword>.</p><p>The outburst sent plasma and magnetically charged particles, called a coronal mass ejection (CME), speeding towards Earth. If those particles had hit our atmosphere just right, the NWS <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NWSSWPC/posts/4863777813673409">said</a>, they could have inundated the planet in a geomagnetic storm that would interfere with power grids, GPS, and radio communications, and even affect satellites' orbits around Earth.</p><p>These impacts could have extended into the northern US and brought the aurora borealis - a reaction between solar particles and Earth's atmosphere - creeping down into regions from Pennsylvania to Iowa to Oregon.</p><p>But when the CME arrived on Wednesday, there were no northern lights in these lower states.</p><div type="image" title="Aurora Borealis" height="1500" width="1999" msid="79671828" hostid="261"></div><p>The space-weather branch of the National Weather Service had initially issued a watch for a "strong" geomagnetic storm on Thursday, but it downgraded the watch to "minor" after the CME's arrival.</p><p>This was because the CME's magnetic field was pointing north, according to Mike Hapgood, a space-weather consultant at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in the UK. It would need to face south in order to wash far enough through the North Pole opening in Earth's magnetic field to reach the US.</p><p>"We're unlikely to see much activity, and the aurora will stay further north over Canada," Hapgood told Business Insider. The northern reaches of Maine and Michigan <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/noaa-scales-explanation">may</a> still catch a glimpse of the green lights, though.</p><p>But Illinoisans and Iowans shouldn't despair. There may be better opportunities for them to see the aurora in the near future.</p><div type="image" title="aurora southern lights earth atmosphere international space station iss" height="518" width="800" msid="79671829" hostid="261"></div><p>That's because this CME was just a preview of an upcoming period of intense solar activity that could bring more geomagnetic storms and far-reaching aurorae. The sun is entering a new 11-year solar cycle, which means its eruptions and flares will grow more frequent and violent, ramping up to a peak in 2025.</p><p>"This is more a wake-up call that stronger storms could occur in the next few years - and we ought to make sure we are ready for them," Hapgood said.</p><p>Strong <keyword id="917898" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Solar-storms">solar storms</keyword> are fairly common - the NWS <a href="https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/noaa-scales-explanation">estimates</a> that each solar cycle produces about 200 of them - but scientists can't always predict them like this. That often means that power grids and key radio connections are left vulnerable.</p><h2><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> is working to better predict <keyword id="823889" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Space-Weather">space weather</keyword></h2><p>Electric currents from solar storms can travel down Earth's pipelines and power lines, overpowering technologies that humans rely on.</p><div type="image" title="Solar Orbiter sun corona" height="876" width="1167" msid="79671831" hostid="261"></div><p>In 1989, an inundation of particles from the sun <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2016/nasa-helps-power-grids-weather-geomagnetic-storms">knocked out Quebec's power</a> for about nine hours. Two other solar storms cut off emergency radio communications for a total of 11 hours shortly after Hurricane Irma in 2017. A solar storm may have even <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/titanic-theory-suggests-aurora-borealis-solar-storm-affected-crash-2020-9">cut off SOS broadcasts from the Titanic</a> as it sank on April 14, 1912.</p><p>Bursts of solar activity can also endanger astronauts in Earth's orbit by interfering with their spacecraft or knocking out communications to mission control.</p><p>Studying the source of charged solar particles could help scientists figure out how to protect both astronauts and Earth's electric grid from these unpredictable electrical storms. Two spacecraft currently orbiting the sun are doing just that.</p><div type="image" title="solar orbiter sun spacecraft" height="1414" width="1885" msid="79654062" hostid="261"></div><p>In February, NASA and the European Space Agency launched <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/europe-nasa-launching-new-spacecraft-toward-the-sun-2020-1">the Solar Orbiter</a> to capture data about eruptions on the sun's surface. NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-parker-solar-probe-winds-flip-suns-magnetic-field-2019-12">Parker Solar Probe</a> is also zooming around the sun. It's designed to measure solar eruptions as they happen, tracing the flow of material from the sun to the Earth in real-time.</p><p>The information these spacecraft are collecting could one day help scientists forecast more geomagnetic storms before they happen.</p><p><em>This story has been updated with new information. Not only is this the only total solar eclipse in 2015, but it's the last of its kind for another 19 years.</p><p>There are a few things that makes this eclipse so rare:</p><p>(Sadly for the US, the eclipse won't be visible from North America but h<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-see-solar-eclipse-2015-from-us-2015-3">ere's how to watch live</a> online.)</p><p>It's the only total solar eclipse of 2015. Total solar eclipses are pretty rare just by themselves. On average, there are usually only one to two total solar eclipses a year. After Friday's event, there are <a href="http://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/list.html">four more total solar eclipses</a> taking place between now and the year 2020.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>It's the first total solar eclipse of the 21st century that occurs on the same day as the first day of spring. To have the moon block out the sun on the same day as the vernal equinox, the first day of Spring, is even more rare.<p>It won't happen again until the year 2034.</p><p>And after that, the only other two such events will be in <a href="http://earthsky.org/space/how-often-do-we-have-a-march-equinox-solar-eclipse">2053 and 2072</a> before the next turn of the century.</p><p>Certain solar eclipses occur in periodic cycles and this one is part of the Saros cycle 120 - a highly studied set of eclipses.</p><p>The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_Saros_120">Saros cycle 120</a> refers to a very specific set of solar eclipses that take place every 18 years and is visible from the same regions on Earth because of where in space the moon and Earth are relative to the sun. The first documented Saros cycle solar eclipse took place in 933 AD. The next one in the cycle will take place on March 30 in 2033. There are other <a href="http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEsaros/SEsaros.html">Saros cycles</a> that refer either to other solar eclipses with different alignments between the earth, moon, and sun or certain lunar eclipses.</p><p>And to top it off, the moon will look larger than usual during Friday's event. The moon isn't always the same distance from Earth in its orbit. When it's either a full moon or a new moon and is closest to Earth, like the new moon on Thrusday, March 19, we call it a supermoon. Full moons that are also supermoons can appear as much as <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20120507035348/http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2011/16mar_supermoon/">14% larger</a> in the sky.</p><p>There are, on average, <a href="https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&amp;ion=1&amp;espv=2&amp;ie=UTF-8#q=how%20many%20supermoons%20in%20a%20year">four to six supermoons</a> every year.</p><p>Don't expect a spectacular view of the supermoon this time around, though. Friday's solar eclipse is like nothing we'll see for another 19 years

She had teased the cover art <a href="https://www.lorde.co.nz">on her website</a> earlier that week, alongside the phrase, "Patience is a virtue." </p><p>It's the first taste of Lorde's forthcoming third album. Here are all the details we have so far about her new era of <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">music</keyword>.</p><h2>'Solar Power' is a beachy earworm, cowritten and coproduced by Lorde and Jack Antonoff</h2><p>Antonoff is <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-most-important-artists-of-the-decade-2010s">the most-trusted collaborator</a> of both Lorde and her close friend, <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/taylor-swift">Taylor Swift</a>. He executive produced "Melodrama" and cowrote nearly every song on the tracklist, save for "Homemade Dynamite."</p><p>"Solar Power" is primarily driven by a choppy strumming pattern on acoustic guitar, vaguely reminiscent of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFCL6f7hy2s">"The Louvre,"</a> the fourth track on "Melodrama."</p><p>"I hate the winter / Can't stand the cold / I tend to cancel all the plans," she sings to open the song. "But when the heat comes / Something takes a hold / Can I kick it? Yeah, I can."</p><p>Back in November 2020, Lorde told fans in an email, "The beginning of summer is my favorite time in New Zealand, and this year in particular it feels like a gift."</p><p>The song is notably warmer and more stripped of theatricality than her previous releases. It's probably safe to assume this reflects Lorde's current musical direction. Her previous lead singles, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlcIKh6sBtc">"Royals"</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMK_npDG12Q">"Green Light"</a> - both of which landed in the top 25 of <a href="https://www.insider.com/best-songs-of-the-decade-2010s-ranked-2019-11">Insider's best songs of the decade ranking</a> - were sonically and thematically true to their parent albums.</p><p>A Jack Johnson-esque snare drum arrives in the second pre-chorus, while the chorus boasts triumphant melodies that <a href="https://etcanada.com/news/793747/george-michaels-estate-releases-statement-regarding-those-lorde-solar-power-and-freedom-90-comparisons/">recall George Michael's "Freedom! '90."</a></p><p>In the minute-long outro, every instrument swells in volume while Lorde harmonizes with herself, chanting the titular phrase. <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/phoebe-bridgers"></a></p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/category/phoebe-bridgers">Phoebe Bridgers</a> and <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/clairo">Clairo</a> contributed backing vocals, marking the first time a Lorde song has included any voice aside from her own.</p><p>In <a href="https://youtu.be/If-VG2s0lX8">an interview with Zane Lowe</a>, Lorde called Bridgers and Clairo her "god-tier female vocalists" and revealed "Solar Power" also includes vocals from a few male musicians from New Zealand.</p><p>"I just knew it had to be a gang," she said. "This record, more than any that I've made, isn't just about me. It's my friends and my family and my country, and I knew the sentiments were not just mine alone to deliver... It's fun not to be alone, finally."</p><h2>The song seems to contain a nod to her long-rumored boyfriend, which could mean a loved-up album is on the way</h2><p>In the pre-chorus of "Solar Power," Lorde sings, "No shirt, no shoes, only my features / My boy behind me, he's taking pictures."</p><p>The 24-year-old New Zealand native, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, is reportedly dating Universal Music executive Justin Warren.</p><p>Warren, who is 17 years Lorde's senior, <a href="https://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/lorde-romance-rumours-ridiculous/GYEGM3X3VZI2ZOZSIDDJW5DJNQ/">denied relationship rumors</a> when the pair were first seen in 2016. "Her feet are bare at all times. She's sexy, playful, feral, and free. She's a modern girl in a deadstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many. I'm completely obsessed with her, and soon you will be too."</p><p>"It's my divine pleasure to be introducing you, at long last, to my third studio album, SOLAR POWER."</p><p>Lorde described the album as "a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I'm outdoors."</p><p>She revealed that her "best mate," <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CP1eFIIDXSx/">Ophelia Mikkelson Jones</a>, took the cover photo in a spontaneous moment of joy on the beach. The titles indicate themes of natural beauty ("California," "Oceanic Feeling"), surrealist storytelling ("Stoned at the Nail Salon," "The Man With the Axe"), spirituality ("Big Star," "Mood Ring"), and epic poetry ("Helen of Troy").</p><h2>The album was partially inspired by Lorde's 2019 trip to Antarctica, but was postponed when her dog suddenly died</h2><p>Lorde began working on new music about two years ago, after she returned from Antarctica in early 2019. She said the trip was galvanized by her <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-antarctica-ice-melting-highest-temperature-climate-change-2020-2">increasing awareness of climate change</a> and environmental responsibility. </p><p>"When I went to Antarctica, I hadn't yet started writing again after finishing 'Melodrama.' I realized after the trip that what my brain had been craving was a visit to an alternate realm," she wrote in an email to fans.</p><p>"Albums live in their own realms in a way, and Antarctica really acted as this great white palette cleanser, a sort of celestial foyer I had to move through in order to start making the next thing."</p><p>Shortly after she sent that email, <a href="https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/entertainment/2020/12/lorde-s-trip-to-antarctica-inspired-the-name-of-her-new-album.html">Lorde told New Zealand's Newshub</a> that her experience directly inspired the title of her next album.</p><p>"I actually decided on the album name right around that trip," she said. "Just coming back from that trip I thought, this is what it is."</p><p>Lorde was accompanied by her friend Harriet Were, who photographed their journey on film. The shots were compiled into a photo book titled "Going South," which was made available for purchase in limited quantities. </p><p>Recently, fans began to receive their pre-ordered copies, and some noticed a hidden message on the inside cover: "Blink three times when you feel it kicking in - 2021." This has revealed itself to be a lyric from "Solar Power."</p><p>In her email, Lorde described the book as "a sort of perfect precursor to this album in an abstract way," so it's safe to assume that a good chunk of it was written in the trip's immediate aftermath.</p><p>However, she stopped making music in November 2019 when <a href="https://www.insider.com/lorde-email-fans-postponing-next-album-death-dog-pearl-2019-11">her beloved dog, Pearl, suddenly died</a>. As she explained in another email, her grief impacted her vision for the album.</p><p>"I have lost my boy, and I need some time to see the good again, to finish making this for you," she wrote. "It won't be the same work - as anyone who has felt loss can understand, there's a door that opens that you step through, and everything is different on the other side."</p><p>Lorde later said she returned to the studio that December "just for something to do."</p><p>"To my surprise, good things came out. Happy, playful things," she wrote in a May 2020 email. "I felt my melodic muscles flexing and strengthening. Jack came over to work in the studio in Auckland, and I went to LA. It flowed. A thing started to take shape."</p><p>She said they had continued to work remotely during the pandemic, adding, "The work is so f---ing good, my friend. I am truly jazzed for you to hear it."</p>
