A Chinese automaker has tested a two-seater air taxi at Skydive Dubai, joining the long list of companies working on making flying cars a reality.<br /><br />Chinese company Xpeng Aeroht has completed the first flight of the Xpeng X2, a two-seater electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The test was conducted at GITEX Global, a tech show in the United Arab Emirates.<br /><br />The Xpeng X2 was tested after obtaining approval from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) and was witnessed by over 150 people.<br /><br />"We are making step-by-step (moves) to the international market. First, we selected Dubai city because Dubai is the most innovative city in the world”, Minguan Qiu, general manager of Xpeng Aeroht.<br /><br />The Xpeng X2 aims to beat traffic and fly to reach your destination quickly. In the future, it will offer an affordable alternative to using helicopters to travel within the city.<br /><br />Xpeng conducted a 90-minute unmanned test of the X2, which was described as an "important base for the next generation of flying cars” by the company. We could fly to Dubai and go skydiving there.'</p><p>"I have never blamed God for what happened. It was just really bad luck, all the bad luck anyone can have in life. It's always terrible when you say, 'Why is this happening to Michael or us?' <p>Fred Fugen and Vince Reffet broke a world record by jumping from a platform 500 feet above the world's tallest building. The team leapt from Dubai's Burj Khalifa tower while executing choreographed movements on the way down from 2,717 feet in the air.</p>

<p>The duo trained three years for the jump. Training included jumping from a Swiss mountain to acclimate themselves to the altitude of the tower, as well as jumping several times from helicopters in the Dubai skyline.</p>

After talking to my parents and counselor, I believed the cultural experience and travel opportunities were worth it.</p><p>I knew that when I arrived, I would have to budget when traveling —doing so through <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hostel-things-you-should-never-do-frequent-solo-traveler">communal hostel</a> stays and low-cost airlines. I was prepared for overstuffed backpacks and bus tickets; upon arrival, though, it became clear that pinching pennies was not on everyone's agenda.</p><h2><strong>The other students are jet-setting every weekend to expensive locations</strong></h2><p>The first few days in Florence were comparable to a freshman welcome week. The time was full of activities, including hikes, dinners, and other various ventures to get students to meet one another. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/i-live-with-roommates-as-adult-perks-outweigh-embarrassment-2024-4">My roommates </a>and I attended one of the dinners to make connections before classes began.</p><p>Standing among <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/started-conversations-with-strangers-to-gain-confidence-2023-12">groups of strangers</a>, I expected to converse about majors and hometowns; however, I witnessed a quiet competition between students on who would be going to the most places in the coming months.</p><p>Comments such as "I have every weekend planned and booked" or "I would go, but I've already been" were stacked on top of one another as my peers attempted to one-up each other. At this time, I had a total of zero trips planned. When caught in these conversations, I felt oddly pressured to also fill my calendar each weekend, accompanied by the feeling of stress due to not being able to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-dont-pay-for-accommodations-traveling-trusted-housesitters-review-2024">afford travel</a> every five days. I feared I would be left behind.</p><p>I've been here for over two months, and this conversation hasn't ended. Every Monday, I hear whispers about where my peers had jet-setted to days before. Places like Dubai and Morocco have been mentioned, leaving me just as shocked as that first dinner. I knew studying abroad was a privilege before getting here, but "a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-to-know-before-traveling-to-dubai-uae-2023-12">weekend in Dubai</a>" was not what I expected.</p><h2><strong>Nobody is 'roughing it' like I thought they would be</strong></h2><p>My spring break was only three weeks into the start of the semester, and this was when I decided to take my first trip. When booking, I scoured sites, such as KAYAK and Skyscanner, but plane tickets and hotels were still extremely pricey. Eventually, my roommates and I decided to spend five days in Prague after finding <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/skiplagging-how-to-save-money-flights-travel-airfare-airline-2024-2">affordable tickets</a> on Ryanair. One of the greatest appeals of Prague was it was walkable, cheap, and had a good nightlife — my top three requirements as a traveling college student.</p><p>My three roommates and I booked a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-studio-apartment-listing-no-bathroom-instagram-2024-2">studio apartment</a> for around $100 each for a total of five nights. It took us two trains, one bus, a plane, and some walking to get there, but the price was right. I was excited for the following week and felt satisfied with our trip and housing accommodations.</p><p>That was until I scrolled through Instagram to see my peers skiing in the Alps and skydiving in Copenhagen. It was almost unbelievable that the people I attend classes with could afford this style of travel while my school backpack was stuffed with a week's worth of clothes cause I opted out of the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airlines-made-estimated-33-billion-from-baggage-fees-last-year-2024-2">carry-on baggage fee</a> Ryanair required.</p><p>I thought everyone at this stage made sacrifices when traveling, but I was mostly wrong.</p><h2><strong>I'm convinced people are traveling for the sake of their Instagram</strong></h2><p>I have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact that anyone can experience a new country in the span of 48 hours.</p><p>I do know, however, that people are really good at making their time away look like the best time ever on my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/instagram-tests-close-friends-feed-posts-more-private-sharing-2023-9">Instagram feed</a>. It's as if they're collecting comments like postcards or putting another notch in their belts by showing one another how many stamps they have accumulated in their passports.</p><p>Traveling while studying abroad is a competitive sport with a large price tag that no one told me to train for.</p><p>I've learned that such comparisons defeat the purpose of traveling. Maybe I haven't flown on the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/20-best-airlines-in-the-world-skytrax-2023-6">best airlines</a> or stayed in an oceanfront villa, but my experiences abroad have been enriching and allowed me to engage with other cultures. Best of all? I didn't have to spend much money, and my Instagram still looks good.</p>

At 79, she's skydived in Dubai, climbed the cliffs of Angola, and stargazed on top of a volcano in Vanuatu.</p><p>And in November, Yu visited Serbia, completing her five-decade-long mission of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/worlds-most-powerful-passport-best-us-visa-evisa-singapore-2024-1">visiting every country in the world.</a> But Yu told Business Insider in a phone call that it was anything but easy, as she had to work two to three jobs to finance her trips.</p><p>"It was kind of difficult; it was a lot of work. I juggled driving from one hospital to another. But I was young at that time, in my 30s, so I could do it," Yu said, referring to her career in the medical field.</p><h2>Starting out with $300 in her pocket</h2><p>Yu was born in the Philippines in 1945 and moved to St. Louis for an exchange program when she was 23 years old. After graduating, Yu said she found a job as a medical technologist and began traveling around the US in her free time, hopping on and off Greyhound buses and visiting 45 states over three years.</p><p>"I first traveled as a backpacker, and I only had $300 in my pocket when I first arrived in the US," Yu said.</p><p>"I couldn't afford hotels, so I would take the late hours of the bus so I could sleep. In the morning, I would be in another state, and I would go to the bathroom, clean my face, and start sightseeing," she added.</p><div type="image" title="a woman holding an small alligator" height="715" width="953" msid="107586499" hostid="261" sizebytes="95812"></div><p>In the 1970s, Yu began to dream of traveling overseas. She took on another job at the hospital and started working part-time as a travel agent to save money for her trips.</p><p>With time, and as she worked more, the roadblock to her travel dreams changed: Now, she didn't have enough vacation time to travel as much as she wanted.</p><p>"It took me five decades to finish. It's not easy as I worked at the hospital, where it's 24 hours, seven days — you have rotations, and you don't have your own time or schedule," Yu said.</p><p>"I was also a single mom, so I had to take care of my daughter and work. Every time I took vacation, I had to make arrangements for somebody to take care of her," she added.</p><h2>Founding a travel agency</h2><p>Yu said she eventually felt burned out after working 16-hour shifts at the hospital and earning little commission as a travel agent. She went on to found a travel agency in the late 1970s.</p><p>But when the Gulf War began in 1990, Yu said her business took a hit, so she sold it. It turned out to be kismet.</p><p>Yu said she took the profits she earned from the sale of her agency and invested it in several properties in Miami. I learned so much being alone and being independent," Yu said.</p><p>In recent years, Yu said she's spent most of her time visiting the far-flung corners of the world, where she's camped with the Mundari tribe in South Sudan and lounged at the white-sand beaches of the South Pacific island of Kiribati.</p><p>And although it took Yu a long time to complete visiting every UN member state, she said the journey was well worth it.</p><p>"It was amazing, and it was a big accomplishment. Age is just a number," Yu said.</p><p>"I lived life and wasn't afraid," she added.</p><p>Yu was one of 51 recorded travelers who completed a goal of visiting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-self-declared-nations-you-wont-see-at-the-un-2014-9">every UN member state</a> in 2023 — the year with the most number of people to have achieved the feat in history, <a target="_blank" href="https://nomadmania.com/people-who-visited-every-country/#">according to the travel site Nomad Mania.</a></p><p>While Yu spent half a century traveling to every UN member state, several people have accomplished the same feat before turning 30 in recent years. In December, a 26-year-old Singaporean <a target="_blank" href="https://mothership.sg/2022/12/travel-all-195-countries/">completed traveling to all 193 UN member states in five years.</a> And in 2017, a 27-year-old Connecticut native <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/visited-went-to-every-country-in-the-world-favorites-2023-11">achieved the same feat in just 18 months.</a></p>
