<p>Carl Icahn is going to keep the lights on at Atlantic City's Trump Taj Mahal.&#xa0;</p>
<p>In a letter to Trump Entertainment Resorts CEO Robert Griffin posted on his <a href="http://www.shareholderssquaretable.com/letter_to_bob_griffin/">Shareholder Squaretable</a> website, Icahn said:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;"><span>...I cannot be so callous as to let 3,000 hardworking people lose their jobs while a global settlement with the State and Union, which would enable us to turn the Taj around, as we've done with so many other failing businesses, remains a possibility.<strong> Therefore, even though I have no assurance that the State will provide aid or that the Union will drop its appeal, I will send you a commitment letter to provide you with up to $20 million of additional financing </strong>(in accordance with your budget and subject to the terms and conditions contained therein)<strong> to keep the Taj operating throughout the bankruptcy proceedings,</strong> and I will also commit to work collaboratively with the State, the City and the Union to try to forge a global settlement that will bring real stability to the Taj and its employees.</span></p>
<p>Back in October, Icahn <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/icahn-the-trump-taj-mahal-casino-will-almost-certainly-close-2014-10">told the Associated Press</a> that the Trump Taj Mahal would "almost certainly close." That report said Icahn, who owns Atlantic City's Tropicana casino hotel, "<span>was approached by Trump Entertainment about canceling the $286 million in company debt he owns and converting that into ownership of the Taj Mahal."</span><span><br /></span></p>
<p>Over the last two months, Icahn has issued several letters, which are <a href="http://www.shareholderssquaretable.com/">posted on his Shareholders Squaretable</a> website, addressed to Taj Mahal employees and union leadership.&#xa0;</p>
<p><span>Here's the full text of Icahn's letter:</span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">Dear Bob:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">I received your letter requesting further aid and assistance in your attempts to keep the Trump Taj Mahal open, and I would like to respond.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">I do not typically shy away from a challenge.&#xa0; In fact, I take great pride in my ability to successfully rebuild failing businesses.&#xa0; As you correctly pointed out, a few years ago I took a chance at the Tropicana by investing when others would not, and today the Tropicana is a profitable, viable casino that provides stable employment for almost 3,000 workers.&#xa0; In addition to gaming, I've also had tremendous success rehabilitating businesses in other industries, including oil and gas, metals and real estate.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">But Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. is one of the most distressed companies I have ever come across in my 50+ years of investing.&#xa0; The company's hometown of Atlantic City is in the midst of an unprecedented crisis.&#xa0; Intense competition from surrounding markets is steadily eroding gaming revenues for the city's casinos.&#xa0; At the same time, relative to those surrounding markets, the costs of operating a casino in Atlantic City continue to escalate.&#xa0; As a result, four local casinos shuttered in 2014, and a once vibrant Atlantic City institution, your Taj Mahal, loses almost $10 million every month.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">Despite all of that, and in part because of the tremendous integrity you have displayed throughout this difficult and arduous process, I took your letter to heart.&#xa0; I worked tirelessly with my team over the last few days - reviewing and re-reviewing the numbers you provided us, trying to find some way to help you keep the Taj operating.&#xa0; I also had countless discussions with representatives of the State and the Union, and at one point, I genuinely believed we were close to a global settlement.&#xa0; But ultimately, even though I committed to inject another $100 million of capital into the Taj, we could not get a deal done.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 60px;">Now, I want to be clear that I am in no way "anti-union" (as some may suggest).&#xa0; I grew up in one of the roughest neighborhoods in Queens, and I've worked hard every day of my life to get to where I am.&#xa0; So I respect people who want the opportunity to work hard and better their lot in life, which is why I often have a good relationship with labor leaders at the companies I own.&#xa0; It's also the reason why, despite some questionable decision-making from this Union's leadership over the last few months, I remain hopeful that I will be able to reach a deal with them.</p>

Carl Icahn Offers To Keep The Trump Taj Mahal Open

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Indian businessman Anand Prakash Chouksey spent $260,000 building a replica of the <keyword id="11900363" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="taj-mahal" source="Orion">Taj Mahal</keyword>.</li><li>Chouksey's wife is still alive, unlike the empress for whom the mausoleum was built for.</li></ul><p>A man in India has gone to great lengths to demonstrate his love for his wife by building a replica of the famed Taj Mahal for her. </p><p>Anand Prakash Chouksey, a businessman in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, spent 200 million rupees (around $266,000) to build a replica of the "Monument to Love," complete with pristine marble columns. </p><p>The original Taj Mahal, located in Agra, south of Delhi, was built by 17th-century emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his beloved wife, Mumtaz. It is known as one of <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/01/travel/the-new-seven-wonders-of-the-world.html">the new seven wonders of the world</a> and was <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.org/media/taj-basics/print/#:~:text=The%20Indian%20poet%20Rabindranath%20Tagore,Agra%2C%20Uttar%20Pradesh%2C%20India.">described by writer Rabindranath Tagore as a "teardrop on the cheek of time."</a></p><p>Chouksey, 52, dedicated the replica to his still-alive wife of 27 years, Manjusha. </p><p>Speaking to the <a href="https://www.todayonline.com/world/indian-man-builds-taj-mahal-replica-home-wife">AFP</a>, Chouksey said that his replica is around a third of the original Taj Mahal's size and was constructed from the same marble used to make the Taj. </p><p>"My wife's only demand was for a meditation room (on the property). She's a spiritual woman," Chouksey told the AFP. "She says the dome creates a different environment, and there is a lot of positive energy."</p><p>Speaking to the BBC, Chouksey said that the interior of the replica consists of two bedrooms, with a library and meditation room. He constructed it after making multiple trips to Agra to take a look at the Taj Mahal, and built the interior of the replica based on his notes. </p><p>"We also used a lot of 3D images of the Taj Mahal on the internet to build our own," Chouksey said. </p><p>The replica, which sits on Chouksey's 50-acre property, is also open to neighbors and tourists alike to visit.</p><p>"A lot of people have also started to do their pre-wedding shoots here," Chouksey told the BBC. "I don't stop them because, in our town, we are a close-knit community where everyone knows everyone. So, my house is open for all." </p><p>"Today, there is a lot of hate in our country. People are being divided in the name of religion and caste," he continued, adding that he wanted to spread love in times of distress. "And this house for me is a symbol of that love, one which goes beyond our social differences and the political noise."</p>

Now, the government of Uttar Pradesh along with <a href="https://www.unenvironment.org/news-and-stories/press-release/city-taj-mahal-agra-launches-action-plan-combat-air-pollution">UN Environment</a>, is set to implement a comprehensive action plan to control air pollution, which will also protect the Taj Mahal.<br /><br />The city is home to Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world. This majestic monument came under dire stress as Agra became the eighth most polluted city in the world. <br /><br />The beautiful white marble facade of Taj Mahal is <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-pollution-india-tajmahal/pollution-turns-indias-white-marble-taj-mahal-yellow-and-green-idUSKCN1IN01S">reportedly</a> turning yellow and green, facing discolouration, due to air pollution. Not just that, the huge <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world/asia/la-fg-india-taj-mahal-20180522-story.html">mounds</a> of garbage lying on the banks of Yamuna where the historic monument is located, has led to an infestation of insects around the Taj Mahal. <br /><br />These factors have turned tourists wary of visiting the monument. Otherwise, it is known to draw interesting onlookers in hoards, from around the world. The extensive smog which covers the tomb that dates back to the 17th century, during winters is not helping either. <br /><br /><strong>An action plan</strong><br /><br />Now, the state government along with the UN Environment rolled out the action plan which will now control –vehicle emissions, crop residue, garbage and municipal solid waste burning along with industrial emissions.<br /><br />Moreover, the government of Uttar Pradesh now plans to deploy 650 electric buses. A large number of international organizations are lending a hand too.<br /><br />“To help deal with Agra’s mounting plastic waste, Massive Fund proposed a project of $30 million under the Alliance to End Plastic, to eliminate more than 90 percent of plastic waste from Agra. Waste management firm Geocycle further proposed to pilot a technology to clean up the Yamuna river in Agra. The fading beauty of Taj Mahal will get a soothing touch on World Environment Day

<p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/sandeepachetan/11268502654/sizes/o/">Flickr/sandeepachetan</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul><li><strong>India's Supreme Court has made a statement threatening to demolish the Taj Mahal or to shut it down.</strong></li><li><strong>The statement came in response to the lack of action taken to prevent and remedy</strong><strong> the discoloration of the monument.</strong></li><li><strong>The damage appears to be caused largely by air pollution from nearby factories and the excrement of insects coming from Yamuna River.</strong></li></ul><p><br />In a drastic statement, India's Supreme Court has presented the local government where the Taj Mahal is situated with an ultimatum, threatening either to demolish the iconic monument or to shut it down.</p><p>"Either we shut down the Taj, demolish it or you restore it," stated Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak to the Central and Uttar Pradesh governments on Wednesday.</p><p>The Taj Mahal, erected by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century, is one of the world's "seven wonders" and was built in Agra as a mausoleum for Shah Jahan's wife, Mumtaz Mahal.</p><p>The court was already in the middle of another similar hearing from May, prompted by environmentalist Mahesh Chander Mehta's petition, when it was raised that pollution was turning the monument's once pristine white marble facade green, brown, and yellow.</p><p>Since then, the court has begun implementing various preservation laws - the most recent being that non-locals are prohibited from offering prayers on the monument's premises - but officials have declared the case a "hopeless cause", rebuking the local government for its failure to devise a preservation plan swiftly enough.</p><p>Over the past three decades, the building has degraded largely due to particulate matter given off by industrial units in its vicinity, but also due to the Yamuna River, at the west side of which the Taj Mahal is situated.</p><p>Yamuna River also contains considerable waste and, as a result, now houses a breeding ground for insects - whose excrement corrodes the building's marble. In addition, household generators running on diesel and kerosene are also common in India and are thought to be another culprit in pollution levels.</p><p>The court also questioned the chairman of the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) - the 10,400 square kilometre region around the Taj Mahal - about why the court's ban on the expansion of industrial units in that area was contravened.</p><p>Uttar Pradesh government has defended itself saying IIT, Kanpur was conducting an assessment of air pollution levels in and around the TTZ and would give its report within four months. <p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">According to the<span> </span><a href="http://www.hindustantimes.com/India-news/UttarPradesh/Miss-Universe-caught-on-the-wrong-foot-at-Taj-Mahal/Article1-1132152.aspx" target="_blank">Hindustan Times</a><span>, the state-run Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) filed a complaint with police after Culpo posed for a photograph, showing off red high heeled shoes for a footwear company.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span>While no police who were on duty at the time raised any objections, India's Supreme Court strictly prohibits any commercial activity or branding and publicity on the Taj Mahal grounds.</span></span></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span><span><span>According to the the Times, ASI officials are saying Culpo's visit was actually a covert fashion shoot and not authorized by its organization nor the tourism police.</span></span></span></span></p>

<br /><ul><li><strong>The Supreme Court has now given an ultimatum to the Central and <keyword id="6357713" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> governments saying, "Either we will shut down the Taj or you demolish or restore it." <br /></strong></li><li><strong>The judges also said that single monument could have solved the foreign exchange problem single-handedly, if it was preserved well.<br /></strong></li><li><strong>The court has also questioned the chairman of the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ), about the violation of the court's ban on the expansion of industrial units in the zone.</strong></li></ul>After repeated interactions over the <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/india-news/on-taj-mahal-supreme-court-slams-centre-for-apathy-says-either-we-will-shut-it-down-or-you-demolish-1881433">issue</a> of the preservation of the <keyword id="6355354" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="taj-mahal">Taj Mahal</keyword>, the Supreme Court of India, the country's apex court, has now given an ultimatum to the Central and Uttar Pradesh governments saying. The court said, "Either we will shut down the Taj or you demolish or restore it." The court was hearing another petition regarding the protection of the Taj by environmentalist M.C. Mehta when they finally declared it a “hopeless case” and tried to call the Central and Uttar Pradesh governments out on their “lethargy” and “apathy”.<br /><br />The statement comes as a shock to Indian citizens as the marble monument is a Wonder of the World and a must-see for all who come to India.<br /><br />The judges also said that the monument could have solved the foreign exchange problem of the country if the governments had looked after it since it invited so many foreign tourists every day. <br /><br />They went on to compare the <keyword id="36539" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="eiffel-tower">Eiffel Tower</keyword> to a TV tower, in establishing the superiority of the Taj, which is “more beautiful”. They court said, "Eighty million go to watch Eiffel Tower which looks like a TV Tower. Our Taj is more beautiful. If you had looked after it your foreign exchange problem would have been solved. Do you realise the loss caused to the country due to your apathy?”<br /><br />The <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/supreme-court-slams-centre-for-lethargy-in-protecting-taj-mahal/articleshow/64944524.cms">bench</a> of Justice Madan B. Lokur and Justice Deepak made it a point to express its displeasure over the UP government's failure to come out with a vision document to preserve and protect the Taj. It also asked for details on what the Centre has done and now, aims to do for the monument. The court has also questioned the chairman of the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ), which is a defined area of 10400 sq km around the Taj Mahal to protect the monument from pollution, about why the court's ban on the expansion of industrial units in the zone was violated.<br /><br />The Uttar Pradesh government defended itself saying it was also trying to take care of the environment around the historic monument so that it could be there for another 400 years and not just for a generation. The <a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/website/story/supreme-court-on-taj-mahal/313348">Centre</a> also mentioned that IIT, Kanpur was conducting an assessment of air pollution level in and around the Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) and they would give their report within four months.<br /><br />However, the court shot back calling the initiatives vague or of no consequence. It said that steps taken by the authorities appear to have a "negative effect" on Taj. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court had blamed the Archeological Survey of India for failing to do what was required for the preservation of the iconic monument. <br /><br />The marble monument has been long struggling against deterioration. It had started turning green and yellow due to pollution and the matter was brought to the court in May. Since then the court has tried to make several laws to preserve Taj. The latest one <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/no-offering-namaz-at-taj-mahal-supreme-court-5251922/">prohibits</a> non-locals from offer namaz in the Taj premises.<br /><br />The court said that as the issue was lingering on for a long time and since there were no concrete steps or reports to present, the case will now be heard on a day-to-day basis only from 31 July.<br />
