Shopclues which was once valued at $1.1 billion-- is sold in an all stock deal for a reported valuation ranging between $70-$100 million. Here’s a look at how it all went down for the e-commerce startup. 2011 Shopclues was founded in July 2011 by Sanjay Sethi, Sandeep Aggarwal and Radhika Aggarwal. This was two years before Amazon came to India. It raised an angel round of funding. 2012 The startup raised its series A round of funding of $4 million. During this time, Shopclues had 2500 transactions a day and according to <a href="https://www.techcircle.in/2012/09/04/excl-shopclues-raises-4m-in-series-a-round-looking-to-gross-rs-100cr-sales-by-dec-2012">reports</a>, was hoping to turn profitable by 2013. 2013 Gaining momentum, Shopclues closes its series B round for $10 million from investors Nexus Venture Partners and Helion Venture Partners. 2014 Shopclues raised $15 million as a part of its series C round of funding from its existing investors. 2015 In 2015, the startup scooped up its Series D funding for $100 million, also welcoming Tiger Global to its board of investors. “Shopclues has emerged as the leading marketplace of choice for the millions of small and local businesses seeking to reach mass consumers in India’s tier 2 and tier 3 cities,” the then Tiger Global private equity business head Lee Fixel <a href="https://www.vccircle.com/e-com-marketplace-shopclues-raises-100m-series-c-funding-led-tiger-global/">had said.</a> It also registered a GMV of $400 million. 2016 Between late 2015 and early 2016, Shopclues closed its series E round of funding to join the prestigious unicorn club. It also brought back its dreams for profitability while also reportedly hoping for an IPO. 2017 Shopclues was caught in the middle of a very public spat between its founders – husband and wife duo Sandeep Aggarwal and Radhika. Aggarwal put out a post on Facebook accusing his wife of “an illicit affair” as well as ousting him from the company. The rumours of its probable sell began taking solid turns. Snapdeal (who was itself making a comeback from massive losses) was reported to be in talks with Shopclues for a possible merger, but the talks didn’t go through in the end. There were also rumours about ebay.in looking to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/ebay-in-talks-with-etailers-including-shopclues-for-a-fresh-bid-in-india/articleshow/65157378.cms">acquire</a> Shopclues. Shopclues also laid off about 200 employees to cut costs. Then came the news of its final sale to Singapore-based Qoo10 in an all stock deal, but with a massive fall in valuation. “This partnership presents new strategic opportunities for both companies, as it opens up cross-border opportunities for consumers and sellers across Asia,” the company said in a statement.

Shopclues launches Shopclues Surety to ensure quality products on its platform

Alibaba needs to merge the Paytm, in which it has a stake, with the much bigger adversary ShopClues, as it is prospecting several securing targets to solidify an India entry against opponent Amazon, people acquainted with the matter said. 
 The Gurgaon-based ShopClues numbers <keyword id="6357968" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="GIC">GIC</keyword> of Singapore, <keyword id="526777" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Tiger-Global">Tiger Global</keyword>, Nexus Venture Partners and Helion among its investors and has raised about $250 million till date. ShopClues is positioned as an online flea market, selling cheaper and generally unbranded merchandise to value shoppers. The startup <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/ganeshbalakrishnan/">creates </a>‘all-day casual shoes for the urban workforce’ priced between ₹1,000-₹5,000 a pair. It also <a href="https://www.flatheads.in/">offers </a>India’s first linen sneakers, and the world’s first banana fibre sneakers. At the time Balakrishnan’s episode was shot, his company was on the verge of a shutdown. He said <a href="https://www.sonyliv.com/shows/shark-tank-india-1700000741/investing-in-the-future-of-india-1000203475?watch=true">on the show </a>that he personally invested ₹35 lakh to keep the business afloat, in the last two months. His co-founder Utkarsh Biradar, who helped design the shoes, too invested the same amount. Biradar exited the startup in 2022 but still holds 30% equity. In spite of his mounting troubles, Balakrishnan rejected the only deal he received on the show. Sharks Peyush Bansal (co-founder, Lenskart) and <keyword id="246967" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vineeta-singh" source="Orion">Vineeta Singh</keyword> (co-founder, Sugar Cosmetics), offered ₹75 lakh for 33.3% equity in the company. The offer values the company at ₹2.25 crore. Balakrishnan had asked for a valuation of ₹25 crore as its company generated sales to the tune of ₹3.4 crore in FY22. The company had raised ₹5.2 crore in April 2021, at a pre-money valuation of ₹28 crore, from angel investors. Thing is, when you step into the market and for 4 months nobody is wearing shoes, because nobody is stepping out only - such situations arise once in generations. And it happened to us,” said Balakrishnan on the show. And the best way to build it is to work with somebody who’s done this before,” said Balakrishnan on the show. In 2019, Balakrishnan entered the startup space again with Flathead Shoes, inspired by his personal experience of dealing with reeking and ill-fitting shoes. Balakrishnan is married and has a 10-year-old daughter. Currently, his household income is managed by his wife, who’s working with a German company. In its Chapter 2, the Gita says that unlike a human body, the soul is immortal. While the human body may die of death or disease, the soul inside never dies. It simply gets in to new clothes (body) and continues its journey. This made me think whether this preaching of the Gita is applicable to brands as well? I started looking around for examples where brands have either died completely or have risen from the dead or the brink of death to emerge stronger in a new avatar. I did find a number of brands which have died their natural death, but more than that, I found that the number of brands that have reinvigorated themselves is far higher. Also, most of these re-born brands are even doing much better than before! So, just like the mighty Arjun who went to Lord Krishna for answers, I too went to Lord Google and started searching for answers to my questions. I had just two questions: <ol><li>Why do brands die and </li><li>How should a dying or a dead brand revive itself? </li></ol>In this article let us answer the first question first? Why do brands die? After much research and my interaction with many practicing experts I found the answers to these crucial questions. So, why do brands die in the first place? There are many reasons for this. But the main ones are: <ul><li>Being stagnant</li></ul>They say that rolling stones gather no moss. This is true for brands too. Brands that do not keep them updated to conditions around them become stagnated start to lose their charisma. Customers always like to connect with brands who are their own personality. If brands do not make an effort to emulate the customer’s personality or atleast lead a customer towards achieving one, then death is certain. There are many examples in India where brands remained stagnated and died without even realising what hit them. Remember brands like HMT, Campa Cola or Ambassador cars? These brands did not anticipate the changes happening around them and more importantly, even after knowing it refused to change thus leading to their death. Avoiding stagnation becomes more critical when we realise that most of them were market leaders once upon a time! <ul><li>Being disconnected with its customers</li></ul>Every brand has to evolve with its customers. Brands that realise the changes occurring in customer sensibilities in time and adapt themselves to these changes not only survive, but often thrive. Take the brand Lifebuoy. From being a mere bathing soap that had a very rustic look, Lifebuoy is today positioned as a health soap. There were times when Lifebuoy was used by people only to clean themselves after toiling in fields and dirt. But not anymore, Lifebuoy is much more than that today. It is a health-cum-beauty soap. Another brand that has remained connected with its customers is Pepsi. Pepsi keeps reinventing its brand identity every few years. Being a global brand, Pepsi looks for universally common themes and incorporates them into its visual identity elements. <ul><li>Misplaced value equation</li></ul>Customers buy a particular brand because that brand balances their value equation completely. To some, value is in terms of money while to some it is functional benefit and to some it is emotional benefit. But the moment a brand fails to balance this equation, things start going bad for a brand. Look at what happened to brands like shopclues.com. Once considered as a unicorn material, shopclues.com does not even appear in the customer’s consideration set today. Or for that matter MTNL. Once considered as the lifeline of Mumbai &amp; Delhi, the Millennials or the Gen-Z customers don’t even know about MTNL. <ul><li>Deliberate Decision</li></ul>While some deaths are a part of their own doing, sometimes it is forced on them. There was a time in India when GoldSpot, Limca and Citra ruled the carbonated fizzy drinks market. When Coca Cola wanted to re-enter India with its own set of brands that competed head-on with these three, it simply bought the out and quietly killed them. While some old-timers still remember these brands, the feeling is only nostalgic. To kill them was a deliberate decision of the brand owner. The same happened with Uncle Chips, once a leader in the potato chips market. Lays took over the brand and quietly killed it replacing it with its flagship. Today, Uncle Chips is half-dead. Half dead because, Lays uses Uncle Chips to kill competition in areas where Lays is weaker or absent. Once the field is clear, Lays takes over the market. Uncle Chips is now a mercenary! <ul><li>Failed resurrection</li></ul>There have been instances in the past when a brand was taken over with an intention to make it even bigger instead of killing it. Binaca and Hamam were once popular brands in the toothpaste and bathing soap category before they were sold. The intention of the new owner was to make them even bigger. But for reasons unknown, these brands collapsed even after multiple attempts to revive &amp; resuscitate them. <ul><li>Premature Death</li></ul>Death does not differentiate between infants, young adults or adults. It just happens! Remember Tata Nano, the great Indian car? The Nano is a classic example of a great brand died which died as an infant. While the product was flawless and perfectly placed on the value equation, its positioning proved to be its undoing! Nobody wanted to buy a car that shouted out loud “you couldn’t afford to buy a bigger car” every time one used it! Here was a car which had everything going right for it, but just failed in managing the perceptions right. Another example is of the soap brand LeSancy. It probably had the best value equation – the longest lasting soap! But then this strongest point proved to be its nemesis. Beyond a point, its long-lasting nature proved too much for the customers who were habituated to change/replace their soaps much frequently. Just like in life, there are exceptions to each of the situations mentioned, but this is by and large the case. The reasons can be many, but the fact remains that brand health is very fragile. Even minor accident may lead to their untimely death. Hence it is important to conduct regular health-checks, get vaccinated and keep the brand’s immunity at high to avoid any sudden surprises. But just like death is certain in our world, resurrection/revival is just round the corner for every brand, provided they make it to that corner! For every dying brand there are 100’s other who undergo a transformation and make a comeback with a bang. While some brands like Coca-Cola don’t disturb their visual identity but keep doing contemporary things, there are brands like Pepsi which revamp almost everything. We will see about such forever young brands in the next article. Hence, the route to achieving brand moksha is to avoid getting trapped in any of the above mentioned situations. And more importantly, if unfortunately your brand is caught in one, then the faster it gets out of it the better. Or else death is certain!

Why do brands die?

<ul><li><keyword id="6357395" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="eBay">eBay</keyword> was an early mover in India’s <keyword id="35621" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="e-commerce">e-commerce</keyword> space, investing $50 million in Baazee.com in 2004. </li><li>It was unable to make much of a dent in the market and its Indian operations were eventually sold to <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> last year. </li><li>As part of its second attempt, eBay will focus on <keyword id="6744826" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="cross-border-retail">cross-border retail</keyword>, and is reportedly considering a merger with ShopClues. </li></ul>Just when you thought India’s e-commerce sector couldn’t get any more crowded, eBay is said to be planning a <keyword id="6635306" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="relaunch">relaunch</keyword> in the country. The US-based e-commerce company, which is primarily known as a consumer-to-consumer service, will part ways with Flipkart next month. Flipkart will shut the eBay.in portal on 14 August, and replace it with a platform for the sale of used and refurbished goods through its local subsidiary, F1 Info Solutions and Services. As part of its second attempt to break into India, eBay will focus on cross-border retail - the purchase and sale of goods between businesses in countries that are close to one another. It will not make a solitary go of it, however. According to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/ebay-in-talks-with-etailers-including-shopclues-for-a-fresh-bid-in-india/articleshow/65157378.cms">media reports</a>, the company is planning to merge with a local e-commerce platform. It has held talks with ShopClues, an online marketplace established in 2011, in this regard. The Gurugram-based ShopClues is reportedly in negotiations with a number of companies for a potential sale. Early mover, early failure eBay was an early mover in India’s e-commerce space, investing $50 million in Baazee.com, an auction site, in 2004 - a year in which the concept of online shopping was relatively new. The deal was a landmark one, but unfortunately, it didn’t pan out according to the eBay’s expectations. The concept of auctions didn’t catch on with the Indian public, who preferred their discounted prices upfront, which led to low volumes. In addition, the rapid turnover of senior managers and cumbersome regulation didn’t help either. Hence, it was unable to make much of a dent in the market and lost out to other players. In April 2017, eBay’s India operations were sold to Flipkart after the latter completed a $1.4 billion fundraising round from eBay along with Tencent and Microsoft. eBay took an equity stake in Flipkart in exchange for a $500 million investment and a 100% stake in its Indian operations. The company, remained an independent entity, eventually reaching a customer base of 4 million users. However, after the dissolution of the eBay-Flipkart partnership, its customers will likely migrate to Flipkart’s new portal. eBay will have its work cut out for it in the short term, which is why it’s keeping its ambitions modest. Cross-border trade is a small piece of the e-commerce market. eBay’s immediate priorities will be to find a local partner and get foreign and local businesses onboard.

Take two: eBay is taking another stab at the Indian market

<ul><li><keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">Telecom</keyword> advocacy group Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has reiterated the concern regarding illegal import, sale and use of signal boosters. </li><li>The <keyword id="62528" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Telecom">Department of Telecom</keyword> has released several warnings in the matter between 2016 and 2019. </li><li>Signal boosters and repeaters are associated with the degradation of <keyword id="10986122" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobile-signals">mobile signals</keyword> and a decrease in overall service quality.</li></ul>The telecom advocacy group, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/e-commerce/news/amazon-alibaba-flipkart-snapdeal-and-others-get-an-angry-letter-from-indias-telecom-regulator/articleshow/82118919.cms">written to the Department of Telecom</a> (<keyword id="16054" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="DoT">DoT</keyword>) reminding them to act on the concern around the illegal sale of mobile signal boosters. These signal boosters and repeaters are said to cause interference with signals from towers impacting the overall cellular network quality. A signal booster is essentially a device that amplifies the mobile phone signal strength within its vicinity. It is used in areas where there is weak or inconsistent signal strength. DoT has released multiple warnings to e-commerce sellers to stop the sale of said items. In a letter to all e-commerce companies on May 1, 2019, DoT had said that e-commerce firms are facilitating and acting as a party to the illegal sale of unauthorised mobile signal boosters. This letter was addressed to <keyword id="18635" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>, Flipkart, Indiamart, Alibaba, Aliexpress, eBay, Snapdeal, Shopclues and Rediff. Similar warnings were issued in 2016 as well. What makes signal boosters illegal? These signal boosters, which are not registered, are categorised as illegal because they use a spectrum they haven't paid for. It interferes with the airwaves making it capable of distorting mobile signal for other customers in the vicinity of the booster. These devices are the main reasons for network issues like call drops and low data speeds. They also make mobile handsets transmit higher power, to manage connectivity with the site leading to even higher battery consumption and poor network. The illegal use of such devices leads to the degradation of telecom services instead of solving signal issues. In simple words, using mobile signal boosters is like having illegal electricity or water supply connection from the main supply, which leads to improper distribution for others who are paying for the service. What does the law say? The DoT has been saying that the seller for the wireless equipment needed to have a Dealer Possession License (DPL) under the provisions of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act 1933. According to the Act, no person shall possess wireless telegraphy apparatus except under and in accordance with a licence issued under the Act. In case someone wants to purchase such a device, the customer needs to get a ‘frequency authorisation/agreement in principle letter’ from DoT and then get the wireless operating licence for the same after submitting required papers and spectrum charges. Additionally, in case a wireless device is needed to be imported to India, the importer needs an import licence as per customs rules from regional licensing offices of the telecom ministry after completing the initial process of submitting documents and fees. Apart from putting a regulation in place, the crackdown on such devices will improve the quality of the services and also allow the telcos to obtain a fee against the <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/business/trai-issues-spectrum-usage-charges-sop/cid/1789412">spectrum charges</a> they pay to the DoT. The concerned authorities like DoT and the telecom ministry will also make their share of the revenue from the registration and licence fee. Biggest e-commerce players not complying The scuffle between DoT and e-commerce companies has been going on for a while. Soon after the first letter was written to the e-commerce companies in 2019, Flipkart and Snapdeal accepted the request to remove the signal booster devices from their platforms. However, Amazon says it's a marketplace and shouldn't be held responsible to comply with laws applicable to products. Amazon said that it was not clear on the legal basis of the request to take down these products. “Amazon operates an online marketplace in India. Sellers selling their products through amazon.in marketplace are solely responsible for all necessary product compliance and are required to sell products, which are legally allowed to be sold in India. Whenever concerns about the listed products get raised, we review the case with the sellers," Amazon told <a href="https://www.livemint.com/industry/telecom/amazon-to-keep-selling-illegal-mobile-signal-boosters-despite-telcos-appeal-1555020193105.html">Mint</a>. As of today, Amazon still has similar products listed for sale on its website. Telcos ask for stricter action To crackdown on the illicit use of signal boosters, COAI has asked the DoT to ensure a complete ban on sale both offline and online. It has also asked to raise the issue with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to prevent the import of these devices. The DoT has also been asked to request India’s <keyword id="69522" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-home-affairs">Ministry of Home Affairs</keyword> (MHA) to issue appropriate directions to state police chiefs and chief secretaries to take action under law against the sellers. Here's why telcos and DoT want you to stop using illegal signal boosters and repeaters

The online retailers have reportedly said that they will stop the sale of adulterated products in question on their websites sold by certain sellers, according to the Mint <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/ecmOFt9kc8RUTRJjQT5TgJ/Amazon-Flipkart-promise-to-stop-sale-of-fake-cosmetics.html">report</a>. Cosmetics <a href="https://www.medianama.com/2018/11/223-amazon-flipkart-fake-cosmetic-sellers-india-dcgi/">worth</a> ₹40 million were confiscated from around the country during the investigation, it added. In the last three years, online retailers Snapdeal and Shopclues have also faced similar issues and were asked to pull off products from their platforms. The beauty products in question include serums, skin-whitening creams, and stem-cell based cosmetics that fall l under the illegal imports category with some products containing ingredients unfit for human use. As per another <a href="https://www.timesnownews.com/business-economy/companies/article/amazon-flipkart-commit-to-stop-sale-on-fake-cosmetics-on-their-websites/312428">study</a> highlighting the problem of fake cosmetics, one out of every five products sold online is fake. About 35% of the online consumers reported receiving fake products under the cosmetics category in the span of six months, according to poll results. Spokespeople at Amazon and Flipkart could not be reached for comment.

Amazon, Flipkart asked to pull fake beauty products from websites in India: Report

 <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>’s ‘Big Billion Day’, <keyword id="18635" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon">Amazon</keyword>’s ‘Great Indian Festival’ and ‘Unbox Diwali Sale’ from Snapdeal have found many takers in the smaller cities but if we were to draw clue from smaller cities there is hyper interest seen in these cities for ShopClues shopping portal. The shopping portal came fifth in the Google search in these cities. Shopclues had launched offers like 'Lowest Price Online Challenge' and ‘ItneKumMein’ which has helped the site increase sale by 80%. 
 
So brace yourself for the mad rush to get the best deal during the online festive sales all across the country and if you are a little too late to land that perfect deal maybe someone in a smaller city is a little faster than you!

This Mumbai-based startup has grown exponentially since it bought off rival <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TaxiForSure+">TaxiForSure </a>for $200 million.

What more do you need if you have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Alibaba">Alibaba</a> supporting you! <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Paytm">Paytm</a> has expanded from online recharge to become an online marketplace. While it’s retail business is a fraction of Amazon, Flipkart or Snapdeal, it’s undeniably the jack of all trades.

Housing.com has been in recent news for all the wrong reasons. However, with an aggressive marketing campaign and ambition to tap into global real estate business, investors clearly see a lot of muscle in the company’s claims.

This online classifieds website is doing pretty well. In April 2015, the company raised a whopping $150 million from Tiger Global and Steadview Capital Management among other existing investors. Valued at $1 billion, the company has also rolled out its special Quikr Cars ad campaign with Ranvir Singh. 
 
5. Mu Sigma 
This Bangalore-based analytics firm clearly breaks the list of internet-based startups. This one offers analytics to major companies across the world. 
 
6. InMobi 
This company, founded in 2008 is fighting against the likes of Google and Apple in the mobile advertising segment. The startup already has 750 million users across 160 countries. 
 
7. Zomato 
Zomato sits at top of the host of food tech startups India has seen. Its international expansion plans and venture into food ordering and transportation has ensured its leadership in the food-tech space. 
 
8. Zivame 
Zivame offered a niche choice for an already under-served segment. The unavailability of sizes, social discomfort and poor market penetration ensured Zivame.com took the market by storm. 
 
9. RedBus 
RedBus has made a mark on consumer minds, thanks to it’s targeted marketing campaigns and differentiation. Of course, it has now been sold off to the Ibibo group for a whopping $138 Million. 
 
10. ShopClues 
 
Founded in January 2011, Gurgaon-based ShopClues has big names like Tiger Global, Nexus Venture Partners and Helion Venture Partners backing them up.
