However, the effectiveness of these measures is increasingly being questioned as AI-driven bots evolve and find ways to bypass restrictions. <h2>AI bot evolution</h2>While <keyword id="21559036" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="AI-bots" source="keywords">AI bots</keyword> can serve legitimate purposes like marketing and customer service, some are designed to manipulate public discussions, incite hate speech, and spread <keyword id="19933162" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="misinformation" source="keywords">misinformation</keyword>. Research from the University of Notre Dame investigated the bot policies of platforms like LinkedIn, <keyword id="19932634" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tiktok" source="keywords">TikTok</keyword>, and X, testing how well these platforms enforced their rules. The findings were troubling. "Despite what their policy says or the technical bot mechanisms they have, it was very easy to get a bot up and working on X. They aren't effectively enforcing their policies," said Paul Brenner, a Director at Notre Dame. Even interns, who had only a high school-level education and minimal training, were able to launch the test bots using technology that is readily available to the public, Brenner explained. Research has indicated that a substantial portion of misinformation circulating during electoral periods can often be traced back to automated accounts. Many experts emphasise that the pervasive influence of these accounts can negatively shape public perception and discussion, and is often used to target certain sensitive groups and stoke communal tension. As platforms struggle to keep pace with the evolving tactics of malicious bots, the need for stronger regulations becomes increasingly evident. Considering that AI is evolving at a rapid pace that makes it supremely difficult to tell bots apart from real human accounts — even for the tech-savvy — Brenner argues for US legislation that mandates platforms to identify human versus bot accounts. Similar measures are needed in India, where the lack of accountability for social media platforms allows harmful bot activity to proliferate. <h2>What needs to be done?</h2>Addressing the bot problem requires a multitude of different solutions. For starters, enhanced technology, such as more sophisticated AI detection systems, could help platforms identify and mitigate bot activity more effectively. Recent advancements in machine learning are paving the way for tools that can better analyse user behavior and detect anomalies that indicate bot activity. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="114250696" title="AI labs are fragmenting because of ego clashes and commercial pressures. Legislation could also play a pivotal role in shaping how social media platforms handle bot accounts. By requiring transparency about bot activity and holding companies accountable for enforcement, policymakers can create an environment where genuine discourse thrives and misinformation is curtailed. In India, the proposed <keyword id="19955205" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital-India-Act" source="keywords">Digital India Act</keyword> could be an avenue for strengthening regulations around <keyword id="19979951" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="digital-platforms" source="keywords">digital platforms</keyword> and enhancing user safety. Still, I won't be staying. <h2>For a fresh start, I signed a year-long nursing contract in New Zealand</h2>I'd been travel nursing across the West Coast for three years when I started feeling a pull to nurse abroad. I knew I wouldn't be 26 forever and wanted to travel while I could, but the complex process of relocating with my husband and his job was enough of a barrier to keep me put. Then my husband filed for a divorce without warning, my dog died, and I crushed my ankle in a freak hiking accident, all within a month. I knew I needed a fresh start. I spent the next six weeks resting my ankle and scouring the internet for international nursing programs. I was limited to English-speaking countries and remembered a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/family-travel-tips-for-road-trips-international-vacations-2024-1">fantastic family vacation</a> to New Zealand several years back. I figured it'd be the perfect place to return to. I found a year-long nursing contract in Auckland with great reviews and started the weeks-long documentation process. I found a flat on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/how-to-sell-on-facebook-marketplace">Facebook Marketplace</a> that had an open room. It was a huge risk, as I'd be living with five random roommates, but the price was too good to pass up. Once I finished the application process, I booked a one-way ticket to Auckland. To my surprise after I arrived, the flat I rented was perfectly functional, my roommates were stellar, and I felt settled. I bought a used truck online and started working shortly after. I've been here about three months, and my nursing lifestyle is already completely different. <h2>My 12-hour shifts are no longer unbearable</h2>In the US, we were just about as short-staffed as we were short on equipment, so every day was absolute chaos. I'd be lucky to escape for a five-minute snack or bathroom break during my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overworked-years-until-child-realized-work-doesnt-care-2024-7">12-hour shift</a> in the ICU. It was an unwritten rule that you didn't take breaks. I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burnout-work-boss-left-office-on-stretcher-2024-4">overworked</a>, exhausted, and functioning on auto-pilot. I didn't have the capacity to give my full attention to two to four patients at once. There was also a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overworked-years-until-child-realized-work-doesnt-care-2024-7">distinct hierarchy</a>. I'd call doctors by their earned titles and knew better than to bother them with my concerns. Everyone was working tirelessly, so we handled most problems on our own. Meanwhile, at my hospital in New Zealand, the doctors insist on being called by their first names. Everyone treats each other as equals, which makes me feel safe to ask questions and voice my concerns. I can't speak for all of New Zealand, but at my particular hospital, we're allotted three uninterrupted breaks in each 12-hour shift. We give a stand-by nurse a comprehensive patient report and rest easy knowing that our patient is being cared for while we're on break. Our break room is stocked with tea, bread, and cheese, plus comfortable couches to lounge on. My breaks are rejuvenating and prepare me to return to my shift with focus and precision. <h2>I have a life outside of work, but the pay is lower and I miss my family</h2>At the end of a shift in the States, I'd drive home in silence. It felt like I needed three days of doing nothing to feel like myself again. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/two-jobs-same-time-secret-damage-mental-physical-health-2021-9">I hardly had enough physical and mental energy</a> to get out of bed until it was time to clock back in. A good night's rest is all I need to recover from a shift in New Zealand. The next morning, I'm up early to hike, surf, or take a day trip to explore. I feel like I finally have my life back. <h2>Though I'm happier and healthier than ever, the pay isn't great</h2>I make between one-half to two-thirds of what I did in the US. The <keyword id="20123169" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="financial-situation" source="keywords">financial situation</keyword> is manageable because I'm single, living with several flatmates, and not looking to make any substantial purchases. But living on this salary would be difficult in the long term. I also miss my family and friends and know that I'd be unhappy if I couldn't return to my loved ones. Google takes steps to protect Android devices from theft, rolls out new features

Over the past few months, there’s been a lot of brouhaha about the lagging pace of bank deposits in India. Simply put, the rate at which Indians are depositing their hard-earned money in banks has been falling constantly, and some blame the increasing financialization of household savings in the country, or the rising preference of Indians towards mutual funds and shares. So, the hypothesis is that people are choosing to invest more in mutual funds and the Indian equity markets through direct investments, IPOs, or NFOs, the money flowing into Indian banks in the form of deposits is slowing down. But is that really the case? <h2>A crisis or a phase?</h2><keyword id="19899808" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rbi" source="keywords">RBI</keyword> data suggested that for the quarter ended June 2024, bank deposits grew at 11.7%. On the other hand, credit growth has outpaced this at 15%. This means that the outflow from banks as loans is far greater than the inflow into them in the form of deposits in Q1 of FY 2024-25. The situation largely saw cut-copy-paste in the first week of September as well, with loans registering a 13.3% YoY growth during the period, while deposits rose only 11.1%. This gap has only been widening for the last 3 years. Since deposits are how banks gather assets to further lend and earn interest income as a consequence, even a slight dip could set the alarm bells ringing for banks, and rightfully so. And truth be told, mutual funds are indeed taking on bank deposits in a big way. Per a report by <keyword id="20250971" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="franklin-templeton" source="keywords">Franklin Templeton</keyword>, in August 2024, the AUM (assets under management) of Indian mutual funds, or the total funds managed by them, stood at 31.3% of total bank deposits in the country, up from 24.20% during the year-ago period. As of August 2024, the AUM of mutual funds stood at Rs 66.17 lakh crore, an all-time high. But all said and done, is this really the reason why the rate of bank deposits is falling behind? SBI has dismissed this to be a “statistical myth”, and experts point out that since equity and fund houses also keep the cash in their respective bank accounts, there’s no cause for concern. So, is financialization really to be blamed for the trailing tempo of deposits? Or is something else happening behind the scenes? We take a closer look: <h2>First, are <keyword id="4000333" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="household-deposits" source="Orion">household deposits</keyword> really slowing down? And is that a cause of concern?</h2>Data from Motilal Oswal suggests the contrary. Deposits grew by around 10.4% between March 2020 and August 2024. Data from RBI also highlights that as of August 9, 2024, bank deposits witnessed a YoY growth of 10.8%. The loan-to-deposit ratio for the retail segment, which indicates what percentage of its total deposits the banks lend out as loans, has stayed at 77.5%, above the 77% mark for the tenth straight month. Also, we can’t forego the fact that the share of Indian <keyword id="20319599" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="households" source="keywords">households</keyword> in bank deposits has indeed slowed down. However, data from Axis AMC shows that the dip is marginal—from 63% in 2022 to 62% in 2023 and 61% in 2024. What has slowed down even more considerably is the share of government deposits in the aggregate bank deposits, which has dipped from 14% in 2018 to 9% in 2024. So, it's not just household deposits, you see. Moreover, as of March 2024, the collective CASA ratio (current and savings account deposits) of all commercial banks in India stood at 41.00%, down from 43.1% in March 2023 and 45.2% in March 2022, marking a nearly 5% point decline over the past year, while still staying over the 10-year average of 39.2%. This implies that Indian banks are relying more on higher-cost funds (savings accounts), which can limit their profitability. <h2>What is this financialisation of savings we are talking about?</h2>Then again, there is no doubt about the growing affinity of Indians towards mutual funds and stock markets. Recent data from CBDT (<keyword id="19942037" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="central-board-of-direct-taxes" source="keywords">Central Board of Direct Taxes</keyword>) highlights that India’s net direct tax collection surged by around 22%, driven exclusively by the significant uptick in the collection of <keyword id="20930760" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="securities-transaction-tax" source="keywords">Securities Transaction Tax</keyword> (STT), which doubled to Rs 26,154 crore, from Rs 13,352 crore in the year-ago period. Why does this matter? STT is levied when you buy or sell equity shares on stock exchanges, sell equity mutual funds, and trade in futures and options in the equity segment. Such taxes, including the multiple other taxes in equity market investments, are considered as leakages as the money moves out of the economy into government coffers. Data from a ValueQuest report explains that over the last 20 years, the markets have handsomely rewarded the investors, generating over $900 billion in incremental value for them. This is the major driver behind the dramatic rise in investment flowing towards the equity markets. There’s further proof of this budding romance, if you check the demat pudding. The number of demat accounts, which are a primary requisite for participating in the stock markets, also burgeoned by 42.3 lakh in August 2024, taking India’s total tally of demat accounts beyond 17 crore. To put this in perspective, this is almost equivalent to the population of just 8 nations in the world, including China, the US, Brazil and more. Vivek Iyer, Partner, Grant Thornton Bharat thinks it's rather important, as well. “Financialisation of household savings in India is an indication of deepening capital markets in the market, especially from a retail investor standpoint. Bank deposits with a modest rate of return are no longer the only option for savings for investors. Investors today have more avenues for wealth creation in the form of public capital markets, which have democratized wealth creation and provided equality of opportunity to retail investors”, he says. Yes, Indians are investing more and more in the markets, and in mutual funds. But is it a sin to look out for inflation-beating returns, which the stock markets offer, and vanilla bank deposits don't? After all, the allure of 12-13% annual returns offered by equities can certainly pale the stability offered by good old deposits, which generally do not go beyond 9% when it comes to annual returns. But all of this is not what is behind the slowdown. India is still a toddler in the school of savings financialization, with less than 10% of the population holding a demat account, and less than 5% of us saving in equities. That's a drop in the ocean of deposits, far inadequate to trigger a tsunami. <h2>Tell me why lagging deposits have nothing to do with Indians investing more in mutual funds!</h2>Says Shweta Rajani, Head - Mutual Funds, Anand Rathi Wealth Limited, “Households' equity holdings composition grew from 11.1% in FY 23 to 14.7% in FY 24. This trend reflects a growing awareness of investment options, empowering individuals to take control of their financial futures. Despite this transition towards equities, banks still hold a significant share of household financial savings—33.5% in FY24 compared to 34.9% in FY23”. Also, household savings and their subsequent financialization do not have much to do with deposit creation, which is entirely made by banks. What actually drives increased deposits is credit growth or increased lending. When interest rates are eased, people tend to borrow more and spend more, which circulates more money in the economy. The telecommunications company Orange — the sole internet provider for the Paris Games — has nearly 1,000 staffers running its 5G-connectivity project at the Olympics.In addition to installing and operating its innovative and unprecedented <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/paris-olympics-internet-connection-5g-mobile-technology-2024-7">5G infrastructure at the Games</a>, Orange is applying slightly dated 4G technology to power its security operations.Most people in Paris use 5G, the fifth generation of mobile networking, to access the internet for the Olympics and beyond. But a small number of key staffers are using a 4G-powered walkie-talkie-style technology called push-to-talk.Ensuring PTT communications are clear for all parties using the system is a top priority for Orange, according to Bertrand Rojat, Orange's chief marketing and innovation officer.Rojat told Business Insider that 13,000 PTT devices were being used by emergency-services personnel and organizers throughout the Games. He said these devices use a "special mechanism" to give them priority over attendees who are using devices on the default public 4G network. Rojat did not provide more details on how the mechanism works but said it guarantees secure and readily available connectivity.<h2 id="43758193-0b08-4962-8be7-ad970754a4ae">Communicating walkie-talkie style</h2>PTT is a 20-year-old technology that works in a similar way to walkie-talkies.It's a two-way radio communication system in which the user pushes a button to switch from receiving voice messages across a frequency to broadcasting their own voice messages.Walkie-talkie-style systems like PTT are often used in a public-safety capacity, such as with firefighting and emergency services, where relaying information quickly and clearly is essential.In the late 1990s and early 2000s, PTT services ran on 2G and 3G networks, both of which had speed and capacity limitations. However, following the introduction of 4G networks in the 2010s, PTT tech started using the innovation because it offered higher data-transfer speeds and lower latency.<h2 id="71a9752c-7a6f-4235-a292-b5e9313e045a">Groundbreaking developments</h2>Rojat said the Paris Games are the first Olympics where the PTT service is running on an operator's current mobile network. But PTT technology has long been essential for the event.The International Olympic Committee has used these devices to oversee athlete teams competing in events and communicate with volunteers, health and safety workers, and security teams in a simple and secure manner."You need push-to-talk for organization, to exchange information, and so on," Rojat said. "Instead of having a dedicated network and dedicated push-to-talk terminals, we will be using smartphones and our mobile network, which makes it easier. You don't need specific equipment."This utilitarian setup can reduce infrastructure costs and the risk of individual hardware failures, Rojat added.<h2 id="5a9e37f2-f741-49da-a8f9-2c79f3b02baf">A break from the past</h2>At previous Games, PTT services ran over a Terrestrial Trunked Radio network. TETRA is a standardized way of hosting two-way radio communications across a narrowband network.Narrowband radio communications, where signals are broadcast over a smaller range of frequencies, have historically been used for such PTT-style communications rather than wideband frequencies because narrowband frequencies provide a stronger and clearer signal.Outside of the Olympics, there are even greater innovations happening into PTT technology.Earlier this year, T-Mobile and Motorola Solutions partnered <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=68a86a785bc466c61a599fa980db205a5b4f883c9dac9ff74595b4ccc2948486&amp;postID=66ab9222e3c9582388c31c70&amp;postSlug=how-paris-olympics-uses-push-to-talk-technology-2024-8&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.t-mobile.com%2Fnews%2Fbusiness%2Ft-mobile-launches-mission-critical-push-to-talk">to launch</a> a push-to-talk 5G system designed specifically for emergency services in the US.
