After Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDFC First Bank launches video KYC facility for customers to open savings accounts

Mumbai, May 18 () In a first, private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank on Monday launched a video-based KYC that will make it easier to open an account remotely, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) earlier this year came out with detailed guidelines making video-based Know Your Customer (KYC) possible, after the banking system, which used to depend on Aadhaar data for remote account opening, got hit by the Aadhaar judgment of the Supreme Court. Customers will need to share Aadhaar and PAN numbers as part of the account opening process under the video KYC system to open the 'Kotak 811 savings account', an official statement said adding that the facility will be used only for the savings accounts on a pilot basis. Once a customer requests to open an account on the website, a bank executive will come on the video call with the customer and will involve the customer signing on a blank paper, it said adding that the entire video will be saved by the bank. In the earlier system, a customer's Aadhaar made it much easier to 'establish' her identity and helped the KYC requirements. Its Group President (Consumer Banking) Shanti Ekambaram said that in the new normal after COVID-19, video KYC can prove to be a game changer where customer verification is completed from the comfort of one's home or office without the need for a physical interaction. Chennai, Jul 3 (): Equitas Small Finance Bank on Friday launched a new initiative allowing people to open savings accounts through video conference facility by revamping its mobile bank application. The web application is designed to conduct a remote verification process through a video call triggering the domain of a 'relationship executive' of the bank, a press release said. Customers can submit their details on the video call for the bank to take up verification. With the initiative, a customer can open a savings account with the bank by submitting the full KYC through video. "Today, Equitas Small Finance Bank is bringing in a new digital banking experience to its customers, the new video KYC account is a step forward towards our vision", Equitas SFB President Murali Vaidyanathan said. Equitas Small Finance Bank enhances digital banking facility

Mumbai, Jun 7 () Despite the lockdown, the largest private sector lender HDFC Bank has been able to add 2.5 lakh new customers in the last 40 days through an online facility which helps open savings accounts instantly, sources said. The account is created using a "limited know your customer (KYC)" requirement provision, and the customer has a year's time after the instant account opening to update full details, the sources told . The 'Instant Account App' was launched in late April, when there was strict lockdown across the country. Banks were classified as an "essential service" and allowed to be open, but the lockdown meant fewer customer footfalls, making the online alternative helpful to open new deposit accounts. "All the 2.5 lakh accounts which have been opened are new bank customers," a source said, adding that the minimum average monthly balance requirement is Rs 10,000 for metro cities, Rs 5,000 for semi urban centres and Rs 2,500 for rural centres. Most of the accounts which have been opened are from containment zones and red zones in metros and urban areas, the sources said, adding that semi-urban and rural areas have also seen activity. The account is opened using basic KYC details like Aadhaar card, a valid PAN (permanent account number) and one-time password via SMS, and gets activated instantly. A bulk of the transactions being witnessed with such accounts are online shopping and cardless cash withdrawals at automated teller machines (ATMs) which can be started using the app, they said. The bank marketed the instant account opening through social media, mails and Whatsapp messaging, they said, adding that word of mouth also helped. As per the RBI, individuals can opt for such an account with limited KYC, and the maximum balance in such accounts has been capped at Rs 1 lakh, according to reports. AA RVK

HDFC Bank nets 2.5 lakh new customers through instant account opening in lockdown

Mumbai, Jun 12 () The State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday relaunched its Aadhaar-based instant digital savings account facility for customers who want to open an online account using the Yono platform. Yono is the lender's integrated banking and lifestyle platform. The 'insta savings bank account' will offer a complete paperless and instant digital savings account opening with just PAN and Aadhaar number, the bank said in a release. "This account has all the features that would provide our potential customers a convenient, hassle-free and paperless banking experience without visiting the bank branch," SBI chairman Rajnish Kumar said. The bank will issue basic personalised RuPay ATM-cum-debit card to all the new account holders of insta saving bank accounts. To open account, customers need to download the Yono app, enter their PAN and Aadhaar details, submit one-time password, and fill other relevant details, the release said. Nomination facility is also available for account holders along with SMS alerts and SBI's missed call service. Once the process is completed, the account holder will get his/her account activated instantly and can start transacting immediately. Customers will have the flexibility to upgrade to full KYC (Know Your Customer) account by visiting their nearest SBI branch within one year's time. HV RVK

But, here’s the thing, when the measure was originally proposed in March, the aim was to help people who didn’t have <keyword id="102890" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="biometrics">biometrics</keyword> or poor biometrics. In the case of authentication failures and financial exclusion, the purpose of facial recognition was to ensure that people with physical disabilities or leprosy wouldn’t be kept from their pensions and provident funds. That being said, reports indicate that telecom service providers are only the first in line. The plan is for a phased rollout to cover all the other Aadhaar Authentication User Agencies (AUAs), once their devices are ready to accommodate face recognition. According to the nodal agency, the Unique Identification Authority of India (<keyword id="6355252" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="uidai">UIDAI</keyword>), the face recognition verification has been put in place to curbs incidences of fingerprint spoofing and cloning. They also indicated that the measure will also increase the accountability of telecom service providers by tightening the audit process and overall security around mobile SIMs. How does it work The Aadhaar card face recognition feature basically means that users will have to get their picture clicked when using the Aadhaar card for eKYC. Keep in mind, this doesn’t replace fingerprint or iris verification. Those are still in place, but should verification fail at that level, facial identification will be the second factor of authentication. The telecom companies, in turn, will save those photos on their database and send it across on their registered device for verification against the picture of you on file with the UIDAI. Once that’s done, the telecom service providers will have to save both photos on their database for audit purposes down the line. This isn’t a suggestion, it’s a rule with consequences involved. If the telecom companies fail to do so, UIDAI has issued a circular on the financial disincentives that they will be subject to. However, it still isn’t mandatory to fish out an Aadhaar card for obtaining a SIM. It’s only if you choose to use your Aadhaar for eKYC, that face recognition even comes into the picture. Other forms of identification are still valid as KYC documents. Earlier this year, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/nine-years-later-80-of-indians-are-still-not-convinced-the-worlds-largest-biometric-id-system-is-secure/articleshow/64406235.cms">survey</a> by Velocity MR ascertained that nearly 80% of Indians didn’t trust the Aadhaar card system. While the government has continuously reiterated that the Aadhaar database is safe, the concern isn’t with the central database being secure, but with middleman agencies that don’t keep a tight lid on their security when obtaining Aadhaar details are identification proof.

It also has some limitations like it can't offer financial products of their own as a business entity, but it can act as a business correspondent and partner with other financial institutions and banks to offer loans, fixed deposits, insurances and mutual funds. India’s first mobile bank with zero-fee online transactions and no minimum balance is on your Paytm app

Mumbai, Jun 22 () Fino Payments Bank on Monday said it has opened 2 lakh customer accounts since April 1, despite the COVID-19 lockdown. All the accounts meet the complete Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements, the bank said in a statement. The government imposed the nationwide lockdown on March 25 to arrest the spread of coronavirus. Banks were classified as emergency services and allowed to run, but most of them chose to operate at lower staff levels due to absence of customer footfall. In the statement, Fino also said it will close the June quarter with 2.4 lakh new account openings to take the overall customer base to 20 lakh. Over 80 per cent of the 2 lakh customers have opened savings accounts, while the remaining ones have opened current accounts, the bank said. Its Chief Sales Officer Shailesh Pandey said that over half of the new account openings are by millennials. "A significant number of people who opened accounts have experienced digital banking and availability of cash at our points. Also, outreach through digital and social media channels helped connect with millennials who form more than 50 per cent of our new customers," he said. AA HRS

These villages will enable villagers to use digital channels for banking and payments transactions. There, villagers will be able to open bank accounts using Aadhar-based e-KYC and make cashless payments to retail stores through a unique SMS/USSD-based mobile solution. 
 Additionally, ICICI Bank in association with <keyword id="339601" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="ICICI-Foundation">ICICI Foundation</keyword> will impart vocational training to nearly 10,000 underprivileged villagers, especially women, to help them earn a sustainable livelihood. The bank will also extend credit facilities to the trained villagers in a bid to boost self-employment opportunities in the villages. 
 This ambitious move is inspired by the success of India’s first digital village, created by ICICI Bank at <keyword id="3896834" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="akodara">Akodara</keyword> in <keyword id="48360" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sabarkantha">Sabarkantha</keyword> district of Gujarat. Ms. <keyword id="45875" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chanda-Kochhar">Chanda Kochhar</keyword>, MD &amp; CEO, ICICI Bank said , “We strongly feel that technology can play an important role in putting development on a fast lane.” 
 
The bank will create a cashless ecosystem at these villages, provide vocational training to 10,000 villagers in first 100 days and offer them credit linkages so that the villagers can start their own business ventures.

The bank will provide a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Is-your-credit-card-a-debt-sentence/articleshow/55617326.cms">unique SMS &amp; USSD based mobile service</a> which will facilitate the villagers to transfer funds, receive alerts &amp; statements and make payments to retail stores by using their mobile phones. This SMS banking will be available in regional languages and will function on basic mobile phones. The Bank will also set up end-to-end merchant infrastructure that will enable the retailers at the village to accept mobile based payments. 
 
The bank will also create a cashless, digital payment ecosystem for the predominant commercial activity of these villages and set up Point-of-Sale (POS) machines at seed and fertilizer outlets for cashless transactions using Rupay cards. 
 All this is being done in the wake of <keyword id="6362150" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="demonetization">demonetization</keyword> when the country's villages are suffering the most. As someone who saw how Akodara's citizens were reaping benefits from the digitization, this move is not only lauded but necessary right now.

Since the customers would find it easier to switch banks, there would be an increase in competition amongst banks, which could also lead to better services. However, this is not going to be easy for banks given the number of loopholes about technology and data-integration front that need to be addressed before the process can be undertaken. "Banks will have to restructure their account numbering systems. Many of them have different methods and streamlining these will take time.
