From Koffee with Karan to Big Boss Tamil⁠ — these are the most-watched Indian shows on Hotstar in 2019

Now that the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> polls are over, <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> may once again bag the limelight and <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> has already churned out a couple of interesting thriller-gangster movies last week. But most of them were eclipsed by the hot Hollywood release, <keyword id="154785" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Godzilla">Godzilla</keyword>. 
 
While Godzilla collected Rs 18 crore nett in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> in just three days and another Rs 5 crore on the first Monday as per industry estimates, all five Bollywood movies released last Friday (May 16) had a slow start at the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword> and understandably so. We were particularly intrigued by The Xposé, a <keyword id="2144245" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Musical-thriller">musical thriller</keyword> directed by <keyword id="304212" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ananth-Narayan-Mahadevan">Ananth Narayan Mahadevan</keyword> and starring <keyword id="8539" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Himesh-Reshammiya">Himesh Reshammiya</keyword> and <keyword id="1089543" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yo-Yo-Honey-Singh">Yo Yo Honey Singh</keyword>, along with debutantes <keyword id="90343" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sonali-Raut">Sonali Raut</keyword> and <keyword id="1273210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zoya-Afroz">Zoya Afroz</keyword> (<keyword id="2993" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Miss-India">Miss India</keyword> 2013 second runner-up). This one takes a pseudo-realistic peek at the glitzy <keyword id="2248216" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-of-the-1960s">Bollywood of the 1960s</keyword> – the dazzling era of Hindi movies, glamorous stars and their not-so-well-kept dirty secrets. The fast-paced period drama revolves around the ugly fights between two rival actresses, the shocking murder of one and the subsequent probe carried out by the <keyword id="2248197" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ex-cop-turned-actor">ex-cop-turned-actor</keyword> Reshammiya (<keyword id="6354422" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ravi-Kumar">Ravi Kumar</keyword>). Star <keyword id="271" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="actor">actor</keyword> <keyword id="16207" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Irrfan-Khan">Irrfan Khan</keyword> also makes a special appearance to assist Himesh Reshammiya in his probe. 
 Although the movie hit about 1,000-plus screens worldwide, business had been slow and debut day collections at the domestic <keyword id="25892" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="box-office">box office</keyword> amounted to Rs 2.97 crore nett, as per industry estimates. But the masala entertainer witnessed a decent traction during the first weekend and picked up around Rs 10.97 crore after the first three days. “The Xpose Fri 2.97 cr, Sat 3.43 cr, Sun 4.57 cr. Total: Rs 10.97 cr nett. India biz,” trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted. 
 
Although trade figure puts it to Rs 8.22 crore nett over the first three days, Xposé is a middle-budget movie, costing around Rs 15 crore (production and promotion combined), and according to a statement by producers, they claim to have recovered close to Rs 12.5 crore from the sale of satellite, music, home and overseas video, and other rights, and are profitable post the weekend. This means most of the revenues earned from the theatrical releases will be add to the film’s profit. Collections on the crucial Monday did not disappoint either and stood at around Rs 3.5 crore, as per industry estimates. 
 
Xposé may do even better at the box office, thanks to the thrill factor, although there are too many things happening at the same time and the coherence gets lost, especially in the second half. “It’s a fascinating subject. Right from verbal duels between rivals, to hiring black marketeers to sabotage others’ films, everything has been depicted,” <keyword id="303" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Director">director</keyword> <keyword id="68758" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ananth-mahadevan">Ananth Mahadevan</keyword> told the Times of India (he himself plays a director in the movie). “The audience will have fun guessing which stars have inspired the sequences.” 
 
D Gangs of Mumbai: Uncomfortable truths Directed by <keyword id="826189" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Wilfred-Lobo">Wilfred Lobo</keyword> and <keyword id="2248198" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajiv-Ranjan-Das">Rajiv Ranjan Das</keyword>, D Gangs of Mumbai is a low-budget crime-thriller that tells the story of two gangsters, <keyword id="169913" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="AVI">Avi</keyword> (<keyword id="3799" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanjay-Kapoor">Sanjay Kapoor</keyword>) and <keyword id="33379" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shiva">Shiva</keyword> (<keyword id="131513" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aarya-Babbar">Aarya Babbar</keyword>), the chance they get to restart life and the final mess they have to face in order to survive. In other words, D Gangs reminds you of The Great Gatsby, but the box office reception has been extremely poor – around Rs 65 lakh on the opening day and a little over Rs 2 crore after the first three day. And fourth day collection dipped further to a paltry Rs 40 lakh. 
 
<keyword id="914784" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="M3">M3</keyword>: Whodunit with a twist <keyword id="16657" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="sara-khan">Sara Khan</keyword> and Paras Chhabra-starrer M3: Midsummer Midnight Mumbai is a romantic thriller directed by <keyword id="1182415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Braj-Bhushan">Braj Bhushan</keyword>. But in spite of funny cops, paranormal touch, ‘hot’ love scenes and unpredictable twists and turns, this flick didn’t sizzle at the domestic box office and managed a paltry Rs 70 lakh on the opening day. Total collections after the first three days amounted to Rs 2.25 crore, again putting a big question mark as to the fate of the movie. First Monday collections were no better and amounted to just Rs 56 lakh.

Mrityunjay Devvrat-directed Children of War was released in India and <keyword id="6354759" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bangladesh">Bangladesh</keyword>, but here it had a problematic start as the censor board asked him to change the film’s original title – <keyword id="1967278" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-Bastard-Child">The Bastard Child</keyword> (the original title has been retained outside India). Starring <keyword id="14623" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Raima-Sen">Raima Sen</keyword>, <keyword id="6825" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Indraneil-Sengupta">Indraneil Sengupta</keyword>, <keyword id="41577" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Victor-Banerjee">Victor Banerjee</keyword>, <keyword id="10655" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pawan-Malhotra">Pawan Malhotra</keyword> and the late <keyword id="78733" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Farooq-Sheikh">Farooq Sheikh</keyword>, this one is a gory tale of the Bangladesh (former East <keyword id="3001" type="COUNTRY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pakistan">Pakistan</keyword>) Genocide and the country’s <keyword id="140599" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="war-of-independence">War of Independence</keyword> against Pakistan. The brutality of war and the gruesome reality of the <keyword id="2248225" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rape-camps">rape camps</keyword> will leave one stunned, but what is <keyword id="6357415" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="missing">missing</keyword> is the bigger scenario. Official numbers are yet to turn up, but going by insider information, Children of War has been a <keyword id="2076872" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Box-office-bomb">box office bomb</keyword>. 
 In spite of the never-ending box office drought, we are now looking forward to superstar <keyword id="14509" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajinikanth">Rajinikanth</keyword>’s <keyword id="1849408" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kochadaiiyaan">Kochadaiiyaan</keyword> and debutant <keyword id="133664" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tiger-Shroff">Tiger Shroff</keyword>’s <keyword id="1184791" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Heropanti">Heropanti</keyword>, to be released on May 23. Both are blockbuster material – exactly the kind Bollywood now badly needs.

Overwhelms All But Xposé Off To A Decent Start

When <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> has a mission, you don’t expect it to break the traditional mould and deliver something spectacular. That’s why we were not feeling wildly enthusiastic when two <keyword id="624" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Women">women</keyword>-centric movies hit the screen just a day before the much-coveted International Women’s Day. One is, of course, <keyword id="1523830" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Gulaab-Gang">Gulaab Gang</keyword>, the intensely hyped drama flick starring <keyword id="289" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="madhuri-dixit-nene">Madhuri Dixit Nene</keyword> and <keyword id="6371319" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Juhi-Chawla">Juhi Chawla</keyword> as leads. It is <keyword id="132056" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Soumik-Sen">Soumik Sen</keyword>’s directorial debut and going by the storyline – a group of pink-clad women hell-bent on social reform and getting justice for women – loads of fire and spice were expected from this movie. 
 But that was not the case. To begin with, <keyword id="1408081" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sampat-Pal-Devi">Sampat Pal Devi</keyword>, the <keyword id="19496" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="leader">leader</keyword> of the original Gulabi Gang, filed a case against the makers of Gulaab Gang and the <keyword id="6355014" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Delhi-High-Court">Delhi High Court</keyword> passed a stay order against the pan-India release of the movie. However, Delhi HC lifted the ban after another hearing and Gulaab Gang hit around 1,600 screens on March 7 as scheduled. 
 
The pre-launch controversy has, however, taken its toll and in spite of the positive buzz, Gulaab Gang has bombed the <keyword id="827271" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Domestic-Box-Office">domestic box office</keyword>. It managed to nett around Rs 2.41 crore at home on the opening Friday, followed by Rs 2.97 crore nett on Saturday and another Rs 3.46 crore nett on Sunday, taking the total weekend collection to Rs 8.84 crore nett. Collections tanked again on the crucial Day 4 (Monday, March 10) and were pegged at a little over Rs 1 crore nett. It means the film is literally struggling to get past the Rs 10 crore nett mark in spite of a huge release. 
 
Just like Gulaab Gang, Kangna Ranaut-starrer <keyword id="6377522" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="queen">Queen</keyword> started on a slow note on the opening day (Rs 1.75 crore nett at the domestic box office, which was lower than Gulaab Gang). But business picked up soon, thanks to excellent reviews and positive word of mouth. The coming-of-age comedy drama hit 800 screens, against Gulaab Gang’s 1,600, but collected around Rs 10 crore nett in the first weekend at home. Surprisingly, Day 4 collections were better than the opening Friday and stood at around Rs 2 crore nett, taking the total to Rs 12 crore nett in four days. 
 
In contrast, <keyword id="1952335" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Total-Siyapaa">Total Siyapaa</keyword>, the third flick released on March 7, tanked at the domestic box office and only managed Rs 4.09 crore nett in the opening weekend. The rom-com, directed by Eeshwar Niwas and starring <keyword id="6451231" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ali-Zafar">Ali Zafar</keyword> and <keyword id="6356250" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Yami-Gautam">Yami Gautam</keyword> (along with veterans <keyword id="6533" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Anupam-Kher">Anupam Kher</keyword> and <keyword id="6738" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kirron-Kher">Kirron Kher</keyword>), has hit around 850 screens. But the lacklustre response at the box office is quite a dampener. The Monday numbers are not out yet but according to industry insiders, the movie has made a little over Rs 1 crore. 
 
What makes or breaks these movies 
Going by the box office response, Total Siyapaa is a washout and Gulaab Gang has failed to draw the audience while Queen is slowly building a solid base. Now let us take a close look at what has or hasn’t work for these <keyword id="569603" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood-flicks">Bollywood flicks</keyword>. 
 
Gulaab Gang – Old wine in new bottle: It’s not difficult to understand why Gulaab Gang has apparently failed. In spite of some good points, writer-director Soumik Sen has essentially portrayed the age-old Bollywood theme – the good versus the bad. Be it Rajjo the revolutionary (<keyword id="6355846" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Madhuri-Dixit">Madhuri Dixit</keyword>) valiantly fighting against gender discrimination, violence, abuse and poverty, or the <keyword id="2122747" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="all-black-politician">all-black politician</keyword> <keyword id="339288" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sumitra-Devi">Sumitra Devi</keyword> (Juhi Chawla) controlling and manipulating every life – they do it all in the archetypal Bollywood style. So you get some high-sounding dialogues and stick-wielding action sans the inner growth of the protagonist. 
 
Most of Madhuri’s socially committed actions are rituously punctuated by dance numbers as if we are in a kind of dream sequence. And the epic grandeur is essentially missing from this make-believe corrupt world, controlled by a failed system and ruled by larger-than-life women. Nothing is too oppressing or overwhelming in this supposedly sombre world; every issue can be dealt with, however trite the solution, and Women’s Lib has been made easy for the masses, without being given the required depth. The original Gulabi Gang founder has not been acknowledged anywhere in the movie as the makers claim that Gulaab Gang is a work of fiction. And that’s exactly what it is. This flick never rises to the classic height of real life but remains dwarfed in a scripted ambience. 
 
 
 
Queen – A <keyword id="6374782" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="journey">journey</keyword> worth taking: Recently, <keyword id="6355923" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Aamir-Khan">Aamir Khan</keyword> has taken to <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> to praise the film, director-writer <keyword id="143066" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vikas-Bahl">Vikas Bahl</keyword> and <keyword id="203866" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="lead-actor">lead actor</keyword> <keyword id="2202" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kangana">Kangana</keyword>. “What a film!!! Guys you have to watch QUEEN!!! Anyone who hasn’t seen it, please go now and see it. Such an important film for every girl, every woman to watch... and in fact every male to watch too! Thank you to Vikas Bahl and his team which made the film. And Kangana... you rock,” he tweeted. 
 Well, that speaks volumes about quality and the flick is worth every word of it. The plot seems pretty familiar, at least in the beginning. Rani (<keyword id="2201" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kangana-Ranaut">Kangana Ranaut</keyword>) is a simple Punjabi girl hailing from Delhi and she gets turned down by the UK-returned fiancé Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) a couple of days before their wedding just because she is not his sort any more. But instead of breaking down, Rani goes on her honeymoon trip alone through <keyword id="106" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Paris">Paris</keyword> and <keyword id="22442" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Amsterdam">Amsterdam</keyword> – trying to cope, having fun and finally breaking free &amp; living life on her own terms. Of course, you will find stereotypes and clichés here but Kangana sparkles in this coming-of-age movie – making <keyword id="343" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="Friends">friends</keyword> and growing inwardly as the journey of discovery continues. A must-watch and we must say that the BO verdict has been quite right this time. 
 
 
 
Total Siyapaa – Not totally doomed: We say that in spite of the poor box office response. Inspired by a Spanish film, Seres Queridos (Only Human), this rom-com features an Indo-Pak pair – Asha (Yami Gautam) and Aman (Ali Zafar) – and their many attempts to iron out the clashing cultures and countries. The backdrop of <keyword id="6354968" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="London">London</keyword> looks both beautiful and homey, but the characters, at times, look lost and confused, as if trying to find their way back to the centre stage. Anupam and Kirron Kher (Aisha’s parents) do their best while <keyword id="16657" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="sara-khan">Sara Khan</keyword>, as Asha’s sister, proves to be tantalising, vivacious and gutsy. You get large dollops of humour as well even as the eccentric and whimsical characters try to make their mark. Overall, an average movie but offers some fun moments.

Amazon donates the money, and the programme launched in the UK in November last year.At least two of the charities listed by Amazon as eligible for donations were backed by Haitham al-Haddad, a controversial imam who has been classed as an Islamist preacher by the UK government. The charities are the Muslim Research and Development Foundation (MRDF), and Helping Households Under Great Stress (HHUGS).Al-Haddad is an Islamic scholar who advocates hardline orthodox beliefs, such as homosexuality being a sin, that men should not be questioned for beating their wives, and that the punishment for adultery should be stoning. He has said that he is against ISIS and other extremist groups.While al-Haddad is now the former chairman of the MRDF, chief executive of counter-extremism think-tank Quilliam Haras Rafiq told Business Insider that he is still the spiritual head of the organisation. He described al-Haddad as a "hardcore Islamist."The UK government's counter-extremism commissioner Sara Khan told The Times, "Haitham al-Haddad's views are misogynistic, racist and homophobic. They promote a supremacist 'us versus them' world view that wrongly makes Muslims feel that they can't be fully British."Business Insider also spoke to Imtiaz Shams, chair of Humanists UK's Faith to Faithless group, which defends people who have left their religion. Shams has met Haitham al-Haddad, and described him as a "very, very slippery guy.""No charity should have someone like that," he added. To Shams, al-Haddad's anti-gay and anti-apostate rhetoric means "he should be treated like a neo-Nazi."The charities were first identified in a <a href="http://henryjacksonsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/HJS-Islamist-Charity-Report.pdf">paper published in February</a> by the right-leaning thinktank the Henry Jackson Society. Researcher Emma Webb, who specialises in non-violent Islamic networks in the UK, told Business Insider: "It became apparent to us quite quickly that a lot of these groups had charitable organisations attached to them."In a statement sent to Business Insider, Amazon said that it was investigating the allegations from The Times but that it takes its cues from the UK's charity regulator."We rely on the Charity Commission, the official charity regulator in England and Wales, to determine which organisations are eligible to participate. If a charity no longer has charitable status because that organisation supports, encourages or promotes intolerance or discrimination and has been removed from the Commission's register, we will remove them from the service."The... organisations in question are approved by the Charity Commission, however, due to the serious nature of these concerns, we have referred these allegations to the Commission and will be conducting a full review to ensure they do not violate our policies," an Amazon spokesman said. He also said that the company has 6,000 charities listed on Amazon Smile.It isn't clear how much money Amazon may have funnelled to these charities."In my view there has been a number of failures here," said Quilliam's Rafiq. He said Amazon had a legitimate defence in relying on the UK's charity watchdog for guidance, but also that the tech firm may need to look at how its platform could be manipulated."Amazon is one of the last tech organisations to really look at who they're actually supporting," he said. It’s the first time that the organisers have come up with the theme of jannat (heaven) and jahannum (hell) – the Wow and the Aao – and <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> Superstar <keyword id="6354583" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Salman-Khan">Salman Khan</keyword> will host the show as before on <keyword id="35780" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="80" keywordseo="colors">Colors</keyword>. 
 
‘Sallu’ has been on a roll here, hosting the show for the fourth year running. In fact, he has been so smitten that he vows not to “leave it” until Colors channel asked to do so. But there’s another reason why Salman has stuck to the show. It’s the Rs 5 crore fee per episode, but the 47-year-old has jokingly told the media that the amount is higher than that. He has reportedly doubled the money he was charging the previous season, but the actual amount is anybody’s guess. 
 However, Colors does not seem to be that generous with its <keyword id="1866240" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Celebrity-contestants">celebrity contestants</keyword>. For one, Pakistani fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has been reportedly dropped for demanding Rs 1 crore or so. That’s definitely bad news for viewers as he would not have been a damp squib like The Great Khali of Season 4. Music composer Aadesh Srivastava won’t be in either, because he asked for Rs 70 lakh, media reports say. We just hope the prize money hasn’t shrunk as well. Last season, it was Rs 50 lakh, but the big news doing the rounds is that the amount might be double this time.

But what will be on the cards at Lonavala, the house of the Bigg Boss, this time? Most people are already drooling over Sallu and his double avatar – that of angel and devil – in tune with the theme. We still don’t know for sure who all are joining that coveted list. But the regular dose of glitz and glamour should not be missing either, going by the earlier track record. Loud verbal wars and fisticuffs, mushy scenes and marriage even (remember how Sara Khan and Ali Merchant tied the knot in the Bigg Boss house a couple of years ago). And there was big money in it – it is said that the live-in couple walked away with a whopping wedding cheque of Rs 50 lakh. 
 
It is almost certain that stand-up comedy king Kapil Sharma will make a special appearance on Bigg Boss 7, like he did last time. But the artiste denies joining the show as a house mate. That’s a pity as we all love a clean and clear laughter break after emotion-charged fights, sob scenes and playing politics in and out of the Confession Room. But then, that’s the sticky factor of the show that keeps it at the top of TRP rankings. 
 
Modelled after the popular show Big Brother, the Indian version has a host of celebrity contestants who stay in an isolated house, are cut off from the rest of the world, work through the tasks assigned to them and do some active politicking to vote each other out of the contest till they reach the last leg for the big prize money. Contestants are constantly monitored by in-house TV cameras and one must don an audio microphone all the time, as long as he/she is in the house. 
 
So what are you waiting for? Buckle your seat belt, take a deep breath and keep your hold firmly on the remote this Sunday evening when all ‘hell’ will break loose and ‘heaven’ will await you. Any last moment wish, dear viewers, before the show begins?
