Jawa, presently the Chief of Transformation for Unilever, would take over the leadership role for a term of five consecutive years with effect from June 27, 2023, the company said in a statement. "The appointment of Rohit Jawa as a whole-time director and MD &amp; CEO will be subject to the approval of Shareholders and other statutory approvals as may be applicable," it added. Jawa will join the HUL board as a whole-time director from April 1, 2023. Besides the Indian market, he will also take over as President of Unilever South Asia. He will join the Unilever Leadership Executive (ULE) effective April 1, 2023. After a transformational tenure of 10 years at the helm of HUL, Sanjiv Mehta will retire from the company. Jawa is currently the Chief of Transformation for Unilever in London where since January 2022, he has successfully orchestrated the once-in-a-decade, end-to-end transformation of Unilever. He started his career with HUL as a management trainee in 1988 and has a proven track record of sustained business results across - India, South East Asia, and North Asia. As EVP for North Asia &amp; Chairman for Unilever China, he led a significant transformation of Unilever China into a competitive, profitable, and consistent business, now Unilever's third biggest globally, the statement said. Further, as the Chairman of Unilever Philippines, he led the business to become one of the top 10 markets for Unilever globally. Rohit's ability to integrate the strength of traditional markets with digital technologies and future-fit business models positions him well to take HUL into its next growth phase. Commenting on the development HUL Chairman Nitin Pranjape said: "I am delighted to welcome Rohit back to India. He has a deep understanding of the business landscape, particularly in Asia and has led the transformation of Unilever businesses in China and in the Philippines. Mehta (62), had taken over as the MD &amp; CEO of HUL in October 2013 leading the business through a period of sustained growth. During his decade at the helm, the business crossed the Rs 50,000 crore turnover mark and the market capitalisation of the company increased more than four times from USD 17 billion to USD 75 billion, reinforcing HUL as one of India's most valuable businesses, the company said. Hindustan Unilever appoints Rohit Jawa as new MD & CEO; Sanjiv Mehta to retire

<ul><li>HUL Chairman and Managing Director, <keyword id="169120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjiv-Mehta">Sanjiv Mehta</keyword> made a clarion call for more government support to boost consumption in the cities. </li><li>Nearly 60% of the total sales for HUL comes from urban cities, which fetches a large portion of the premium for FMCG companies. </li><li>Between falling earnings, job losses, poor business, and widespread risk aversion, many retail stores have closed down, and HUL’s distributors are not able to recover their dues. </li></ul>Sanjiv Mehta, the Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Unilever (HUL), said that India would have to be “aggressive” with spending to boost consumption in the cities before it’s too late. For some of the distributors of India’s largest consumer staples company, the damage has already been done. Speaking at a virtual event organized by the All India Management Association (AIMA), Mehta raised the need for a cut in interest rates, given the signs of urban distress that have emerged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “There is a risk of inflation, but the bigger risk is the economy going into a tailspin. A big part of rural India still buys unbranded products, while the margin for FMCG companies comes from premium products, which are sold in the big cities. “The rural per capita consumption of FMCG is less than half of the national average. It is very visible now that the rural growth rates are higher. The issue for us is the urban growth rate,” said Mehta. The government has introduced various relief measures for the rural economy during the pandemic, such as the government economic stimulus increased allocation under the MGNREGA scheme to enhance job opportunities in rural areas. These relief measures are largely focussed on rural areas. On the other hand, Mehta believes that the government should look at how the urban buying sentiment can be revived. “There is very clear anecdotal evidence of growth rates in the staples in urban India slowing down, which could be a very clear pointer that the urban poor are feeling the stress,” he said. <div type="image" title="HUL portfolio" msid="78267486" hostid="153"></div> The on-ground reality for HUL distributors According to the ICICI Securities report, the increase in the distributor’s bad debts due to the lockdown has led to the permanent closure of a few retail stores. The distributors are finding it difficult to absorb this loss with margins of 4%, the report said. The company has also not offered a grace period to the credit days, which continue to hang like a sword on distributors’ necks. With a downtrend in its revenue, HUL has reduced the number of trade schemes and discounts. The company has also taken a price hike of 8% in Red Label Dust tea. HUL’s revenues declined 7% in the first quarter if the revenue from its GSK Consumer integration⁠— of which the food powder Horlicks was the biggest contributor⁠—is excluded. HUL’s share price reflects investors’ pessimism The share price of HUL hit a nearly three-month low of ₹2,011.70 on September 20. Edelweiss also expects margins to remain under pressure, with the declining economy. “Skincare, which is a high margin business, is doing well but still not back to pre-COVID levels. Meanwhile, Foods &amp; Refreshment grew 3% on a very high prior year comparator, driven by solid performance in Tea and Ice-creams.</li></ul>Hindustan Unilever Limited, in its results for the quarter ended 31st December 2021 said that it spent Rs 1,193 crore on advertising in the quarter. It also said that it saw strong, all-round performance in the quarter. "Growth in the quarter was competitive and profitable with Domestic Consumer Growth of 11% and Profit After Tax (PAT) growth of 17%. Business fundamentals remained strong with handsome market share gains in all our divisions, both urban and rural markets and across price segments. Underlying Volume Growth at 2% was significantly ahead of the market," its report stated. Its Home Care segment witnessed a growth at 23% and was broad based with strong performance in Fabric Wash and Household Care. Fabric Wash grew in strong double-digits with all parts of the portfolio performing well. Household Care sustained its robust performance and grew in high teens on a strong base. Liquids and Fabric Sensations continue to outperform driven by effective market development actions. Calibrated price increases were taken across Fabric Wash and Household Care portfolios to partly offset the significant inflation in input costs. Its Beauty &amp; Personal Care segment grew 7% led by Skin Cleansing, Skin Care and Colour Cosmetics. Tea continued its robust performance and grew competitively on a strong base delivering high teens 2Y CAGR. Focus on market development actions in Health Food Drinks resulted in handsome market share and penetration gains. Ice Creams had a very strong quarter delivering 2Y CAGR in high teens enabled by impactful innovations and effective activations. Its EBITDA margin at 25.4% improved 100 bps YoY. PAT at Rs. 2,243 Crores increased by 17% year-on-year. Profit after tax before exceptional items at Rs 2,292 Crores was up 17%. FMCG major <keyword id="87377" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hindustan-Unilever-Ltd">Hindustan Unilever Ltd</keyword> on Thursday reported an increase of 10.7 percent in its consolidated net profit at ₹2,100 crore for the first quarter ended June, 2021. The company had posted a net profit of ₹1,897 crores in the April-June quarter of the previous fiscal. Its net sales during the quarter under review stood at ₹11,966 crore, up 13.21 per cent, as against ₹10,570 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, Hindustan Unilever Ltd (<keyword id="44863" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="HUL">HUL</keyword>) said in a regulatory filing. HUL's total expenses was at ₹9,546 crore, up 14.68 per cent in the first quarter of FY 2021-22, as against ₹8,324 crore a year ago. Commenting on the result, HUL CMD <keyword id="169120" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjiv-Mehta">Sanjiv Mehta</keyword> said: "In a challenging environment, we have delivered a strong performance across topline and bottomline. Our performance in the quarter has been resilient and is reflective of our capabilities, the agility in our operations and the intrinsic strength of our portfolio." The second wave of COVID-19 brought upon us a severe humanitarian crisis. Mehta further said: "Looking forward, we remain cautiously optimistic about the demand recovery. Our focus firmly remains behind delivering volume-led competitive growth and margins in a healthy range." Shares of HUL on Thursday were trading at ₹2,446.15, up 0.50 per cent on BSE.
