New Delhi, Mar 25 () Supply of hand sanitisers in the market is set to increase in the coming days, with liquor makers in various states starting to manufacture them on a priority basis, according to an industry grouping. All India Distillers' Association (AIDA) on Wednesday said distilleries in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and other states have started production of hand sanitisers. This follows appeals by various state governments amid rising demand for hand sanitisers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Many state governments have granted licenses to distillers in quick time, in some cases the same day, to manufacture and sell hand sanitisers. They would be sold at the central government-mandated price limits, a senior AIDA representative said. "Availability of hand sanitisers would improve in the market within a couple of days... within three to four days, we would have sufficient quantity in the market," AIDA Director General V N Raina told . According to him, around 45 to 50 distilleries in the country have agreed to produce hand sanitisers. There was panic buying of hand sanitisers in the market following cases of coronavirus infections being reported in the country. Though several FMCG companies, including HUL, ITC, Godrej and Himalaya, have expanded their production of hand sanitisers, there still seems to be supply shortage due to the high demand. To tackle the situation, Raina said the central government has directed all states to immediately grant licenses to distilleries for manufacturing hand sanitisers. "Lots of distillers do not have packing facilities as in small bottles of 100 ml or 200 ml. Generally, they have only liquor bottles for packing. Despite that around 45-50 distilleries are doing that," he said. As per the WHO standards, the base for hand sanitisers is alcohol. "I am happy that our members and the industry have responded to this crisis very well. The government is also very happy about the way we have responded to the current situation," Raina said. Several liquor makers, including market leader Diageo and Radico Khaitan, have already announced that they would manufacture and supply hand sanitisers. There are more than 550 coronavirus cases in the country. Washing hands frequently is among the effective ways to curb spreading of the infection. On whether liquor makers would continue to produce hand sanitisers even after the coronavirus pandemic is over, Raina said it would depend on future demand. "They would continue manufacturing as they have the licenses... once the crisis is over, the demand would go down. "We would have to see and analyse what is the demand then," he said. New Delhi, Mar 26 () The Centre on Thursday said it has given permission to distilleries and sugar mills to manufacture hand sanitisers in bulk and has already issued licences to 45 distilleries. To maintain demand and supply of hand sanitisers, states have been asked to remove any bottlenecks in supply of raw materials for making hand sanitizers and to give permissions to the applicants, including distilleries, who intend to manufacture hand sanitisers, it said. "We had received 100 applications, of which we have given licence to 45 distilleries so far apart from 564 other manufacturers. These companies will manufacture hand sanitisers in bulk," Consumer Affairs Secretary Pawan Agarwal told . More than 55 distilleries are likely to be given permission in one or two days and many more are being motivated to produce hand sanitizers, he said. The permission has been given under the Drug Prices Control Order, he added. The secretary further said, "These manufacturers have also been asked to work in three shifts to maximise their output. What was produced in a month will be manufactured in a day." Most of them have commenced production and others are likely to commence output in a week, the consumer affairs ministry said in a separate statement, and added there will be sufficient supply of hand sanitisers for consumers and hospitals. In order to ensure that hand sanitisers are made available to the general public and hospitals at a reasonable price, the government has also fixed the maximum retail price of hand sanitisers at Rs 100 for 200 ml bottle. The prices of other quantities of hand sanitisers will be fixed in the proportion of these prices. Both central and state governments are taking all steps to ensure supply of essential items during the lockdown to combat the coronavirus. New Delhi, Apr 2 () The soaring demand for hand sanitisers following the coronavirus pandemic has made several companies -- from FMCG players such as Patanjali, Emami, Raymond Consumer Care and Dabur to liquor makers like Radico Khaitan and Diageo -- to venture into manufacturing of the disinfectant. Recently, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs had directed state governments to grant licences to distilleries and sugar companies to manufacture hand sanitisers to prevent shortage. Besides, the ministry had also directed deodorant makers to either manufacture or bottle hand sanitisers made by sugar companies and distilleries, which lack capabilities to pack in small units consumed in the market. Raymond Consumer Care, the FMCG arm of the Raymond Group, which sells personal grooming items such as deodorant and perfume under Park Avenue brand, plans to manufacture hand sanitiser and is awaiting clearances from the government. "At Raymond Consumer Care, we intend to make a positive contribution to India's fight against COVID-19. We are committed to creating innovative products that resonate with the needs of our consumers and we have currently developed an effective hand sanitiser," said Raymond Consumer Care spokesperson. "The commercial production of hand sanitiser is currently awaiting the government approval and it is our endeavour to make the same available across the country through our expansive distribution network," he added. Baba Ramdev-led Patanjali Ayurved, which also forayed into the hand sanitiser manufacturing last week, claimed it is selling the item at below the price capped by the government. "We have already sent one million units into the market and would soon produce over one crore units to battle the spread of Covid-19," said Patanajali Ayurved spokesperson S K Tijarawala. Last month, the government capped the maximum retail price of hand sanitiser at Rs 100 per 200 ml bottle till June 30 this year following a sharp rise in prices of this product owing to the coronavirus outbreak. Kolkata-based FMCG major Emami, which owns 'HE' brand of deodorants, also has plans to start manufacturing hand sanitisers. "We confirm that we are getting into production of hand sanitiser," said an Emami spokesperson without specifying details. Earlier, diversified conglomerate ITC, which owns popular personal hygiene brand Savlon, had announced to manufacture hand sanitiser segment at its perfume manufacturing facility at Manpura in Himachal Pradesh. "Addressing a larger national requirement during the Coronavirus pandemic, ITC has repurposed its recently commissioned perfume manufacturing facility in Manpura, Himachal Pradesh to manufacture Savlon Hand Sanitisers. This initiative reinforces our efforts to enable enhanced production and supply of Savlon range of hygiene products in the market which is the need of the hour," said ITC Chief Executive, Personal Care Products, Sameer Satpathy. Stressing on the need to venture into manufacturing of hand sanitisers, Dabur India Ltd Marketing Head-Home &amp; Personal Care Rajeev John said, "In today's world, where consumers are facing increasing health hazards due to the emergence of new viruses and pandemics, there is a growing need for getting instant and on-the-go protection." Like the FMCG firms, liquor manufactures such as Radico Khaitan and Diageo have started manufacturing hand sanitizers. According to All India Distillers' Association (AIDA), around 150 distilleries are manufacturing hand sanitisers across states in India. "In states like UP alone 29 distilleries are producing hand sanitisers. The number of such distilleries is growing every day," said AIDA Director General V N Raina. When asked about the quantity produced by the distilleries, he said, "Some distilleries have supplied over one lakh litres in three days' time only. All over India, they must be producing over 4 to 5 lakh litres." He, however, since distilleries do not have packing facilities for small units such as 50 ml or 100 ml they are taking help of other industries. Liquor maker Radico Khaitan, which has started manufacturing hand sanitisers from its Rampur distillery in Uttar Pradesh and other plants in southern India, has provided the first batch of hand sanitisers to primary health care authorities and hospitals in a number of states. Branded as "Radico 8PM Extra Strong Hand Sanitiser", it is available at markets in bulk and small units as well. "Radico Khaitan decided to expand the use of Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) at the company's mother distillery in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh and at other bottling plants in different parts of the country in this time of distress," said Radico Khaitan Chief Operating Officer Amar Sinha. Before the coronavirus outbreak hand sanitiser was considered to be a very niche segment and its distribution was limited to key metro cities where it was consumed by high income groups and hospitals. Mumbai, Mar 24 () Led by market leader Diageo, the liquor industry is joining hands with state governments to fight the coronavirus pandemic by manufacturing and supplying hand sanitisers. The coronavirus pandemic has led to a high demand for sanitisers as hand washing is an effective way to keep the infection away. Liquor companies like Diageo and Radico Khaitan have decided to stop bottling alcohol at some of their plants and instead make hand sanitisers following an appeal by the government and a promise to give them the needed permits. "We will support the government and the hospitality sector during this pandemic by manufacturing 3 lakh litres of bulk hand sanitisers from our 15 units across the country," Anand Kripalu, managing director and chief executive officer of Diageo India, said. As part of the initiative, the company will also donate 5 lakh litres of ENA (Extra Neutral Alcohol), which is a key ingredient in making sanitisers, to the sanitiser industry, he said in a statement. This amount of ENA can produce more than 2 million units (250 ml each) of hand sanitisers, he added. Diageo is the country's largest liquor maker. The country's second largest liquor maker Allied Blenders &amp; Distillers, which produces the globally largest selling whiskey Officer's Choice, said it has not decided on manufacturing hand sanitisers since there is a tedious licensing process. "We have not taken a final call on this. A liquor company cannot make something that needs a drug licence under the existing licence. Having said so, it does not mean we will not do our bit to help the nation," Deepak Roy, vice-chairman of ABD, told over phone on Tuesday. Smaller player Radico Khaitan said it would start producing sanitisers from its Rampur distillery and has already applied for necessary permissions. It has also chalked out distribution plans. "Being a leading spirit manufacturer, we have decided to extend our support to the country in this worrisome time of the coronavirus outbreak," Radico Khaitan Chief Operating Officer Amar Sinha said in a statement. "Radico Khaitan has kick-started expanding the use of ENA at its mother distillery in Rampur into production of hand sanitiser which will be available at retail stores in a few days," he added. According to Kripalu, Diageo has also announced health insurance cover to on-trade partners and donation of free masks to government public health departments. As part of this initiative, it is offering health insurance cover worth Rs 3 crore to bartenders and would also donate around 1,50,000 masks to the public health departments of five states. An e-mail sent to the All India Distillers Association did not elicit a response on questions about other distillers' efforts towards making hand sanitisers. Last week, FMCG leader HUL cut the prices of its handwash product and also promised to increase production to help alleviate supplies issues in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Beauty products maker VLCC has also started production of hand sanitisers. Some liquor companies overseas are also in the process of making hand sanitisers. "While we advise that you cannot use our standard vodka product as a hand sanitizer, our team at the distillery has been working hard to get all of the pieces in place to begin production on a hand sanitizer that adheres to industry and governmental guidance," American vodka maker Tito's said in a tweet on Sunday. New Delhi, Apr 3 () Personal grooming products maker Nivea India on Friday said it has started production of hand sanitisers from its skincare manufacturing plants in collaboration with its key partners. The company said its plant at Sanand in Gujarat which originally manufactures skincare products for the India market has begun production of alcohol-based hand sanitisers, and it will be shifting part of its production towards the making of sanitisers at the plant. The hand sanitisers will be distributed free of cost to the public hospitals and healthcare institutions in Ahmedabad and Vadodara as well as to distribution partners across the country, the company said in a statement. "Extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary solutions and we are happy to do our part to help in this time of need. We have been in constant touch with the local authorities and our key partners, having worked very hard over the past few weeks to make the switch at our plant and formulate the liquid hand sanitisers," Nivea India Managing Director Neil George and Vice President of Supply Chain for the Region Omar Navarro said in a joint statement. This project was made possible in a record time only through the support and cooperation of the company's associates, including Gujarat Print Pack Ltd which provided packaging labels for the sanitiser bottles completely free of cost and Hyderabad-based partner Aptar Beauty and Home India Pvt Ltd, which provided pump assembly free of cost, they added. New Delhi, Mar 31 () FMCG major ITC on Tuesday said it has started production of Savlon hand sanitisers from its Manpura facility in Himachal Pradesh, which has been designed to produce premium fine fragrances to meet soaring demand due to coronavirus pandemic. The company said it has re-purposed the perfume facility to help produce an additional 1,25,000 litres of Savlon hand sanitisers as there has been an unprecedented surge in demand for hand hygiene products like sanitisers. Commenting on the step, ITC Personal Care Products Chief Executive Sameer Satpathy said,"Addressing a larger national requirement during the coronavirus pandemic, ITC has re-purposed its recently commissioned perfume manufacturing facility in Manpura, Himachal Pradesh to manufacture Savlon hand sanitisers." He further said: "This initiative reinforces our efforts to enable enhanced production and supply of Savlon range of hygiene products in the market which is the need of the hour to help fight the virus and contain its spread." ITC starts producing Savlon hand sanitisers from fragrances factory

New Delhi, Mar 24 () The government on Tuesday banned export of all sanitisers and ventilators with immediate effect in wake of the coronavirus outbreak. "Export of all sanitisers...is prohibited, with immediate effect," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification. It also banned exports of all types of ventilators, including any artificial respiratory apparatus or oxygen therapy apparatus or any other breathing appliance or device. Last week, it had banned export of certain ventilators, surgical and disposable masks and textile raw material used for making masks. There is a shortage of hand sanitisers and face masks in the market amid the coronavirus outbreak as people resorted to panic buying. RR HRS

New Delhi, Mar 18 () The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has asked manufacturers and importers of surgical and protective masks, gloves and hand sanitisers to furnish information regarding these items by the end of the day, failing which it will have to take coercive action. Last week, NPPA directed all manufacturers and importers of surgical and protective masks, gloves and hand sanitisers to furnish information on these items by March 17, 2020. It has been observed that very few manufacturers/ importers have submitted the requisite information in the prescribed format, NPPA said in an office memorandum. "It is therefore informed to all the companies concerned that non-compliance of the orders issued by this office would attract penal provisions of DPCO, 2013 and the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 which may lead to search and seizure and even prosecution for defaulting companies," it added. All manufacturers/importers are required to submit the requisite details by 6 pm on March 18, 2020 failing which NPPA would be constrained to initiate appropriate coercive action, the regulator said. The government on March 13 declared face masks and hand sanitisers as essential commodities for the next 100 days as it stepped up efforts to boost supply and prevent hoarding of these items in its fight to check the spread of coronavirus disease.
