For each of us, life is going to be marked in two periods - ‘<keyword id="9311631" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="pre-covid">pre-COVID</keyword>’ era and ‘post-COVID’ era. After the Spanish Flu of 1918, the world had forgotten pandemics and when one broke out, we were not prepared at all. <br /><br />As lockdowns and mobility restrictions came into force to counter the spread of the virus, various sectors were forced to hastily work out their business continuity plans. The only solace was that the <keyword id="50691" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Digital">digital</keyword> connectivity had matured enough in recent years to keep life going amid shutdown. Thus, many sectors could figure out ways to ensure continuity. Remote learning and continued education is one example. The other is, of course, the entertainment and media sector, which, like any other business, has also faced unprecedented turbulence in 2020.<br /><br /><strong>COVID-19 Impact on Media and Entertainment Industry</strong><br />Television channels, as utility service, had to go on, and their viewership witnessed a spike, as people were largely confined to their homes and the TV set (or the mobile phone screen) was their only point of contact with the outside world, and thus the only source of news as well as diversion. <br /><br />The consumption of content, thus, increased greatly. Unfortunately, this did not result in a similar increase in revenue. This is ironic. With the overall economy taking a hit, there were wage cuts and job losses, reducing the overall purchasing power of consumers. As a result, their spending was restricted to the most essential items alone which means that at least during the period of the extended lockdown, from April to early July, there was no point in any marketing activities, including advertising. Thus, while viewership increased, content consumption increased, for entertainment and media industry expenses increased, but its revenues hit rock bottom.<br /><br />As the lockdown was gradually lifted, restrictions were eased and life began to limp back to normality in July, the revenue streams started picking up again – though very slowly. Further, with the onset of the festive season, general entertainment channels reached pre-COVID levels in terms of revenue, but most niche channels have not yet reached the same point. However, one big exception has been the news segment: for obvious reasons, news channels have benefitted from the lockdown because more and more people turned to them more and more often for updates on the coronavirus and lockdown measures.<br /><br /><strong>Post COVID-19 Media and Entertainment Industry </strong><br />As the world adjusts to a new normal, consumer behaviour is rapidly evolving. There is ever-increasing demand for at-home digital media like OTT platforms which are now expanding to new demographics and locations. This will continue to magnify post-COVID. Further, even once the crisis subsides; it would take some time for consumers to adopt external consumptions models again.<br /><br />Therefore, technological advancements would play a pivotal role in bringing outdoor entertainment directly to consumers at their home. <br /><br />The future is digital. We will not just see the addition of new users but also increasing the retainership of existing digital consumers. Online gaming consumption and demand for OTT originals is only going to increase as technological advances greatly aid them. The best part is that their model is subscription-driven and not dependent upon advertisers. Though television is very much here to stay, OTT is going to gain a lot of traction in the mid-term.<br /><br />Further, the dependency of M&amp;E companies on technology will likely increase to leverage cost-efficiency and create revenue enhancement opportunities. As monetisation and revenue in terms of ad-spend, continues to grapple, profit protection and cash management with greater technology integration will gain strategic significance for M&amp;E companies. The industry is likely to remain focused on sustenance at current levels along with a renewed emphasis on flexibility which would accelerate the move to a variable cost model and reduced fixed costs. While the long-term implications of COVID-19 are yet to emerge, the above mentioned developments will likely come into focus in the M&amp;E industry as the post-COVID reality becomes clearer.<br /><br /><strong>Summing Up!</strong><br />If we take a long-term view, COVID-19 has put the world behind by at least two to three years, and returning to the normal will take as much time. Moreover, it may not be normal  as earlier, but a ‘new normal’. A year is a long time, and many fears and many habits have become a part of us, and it will be difficult to dislodge them for long. Many people may continue taking precautions even after successful administration of the vaccine, which will further impact consumer decisions and behaviour.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Far-right and anti-gay protesters have started targeting drag queens in the UK. </li><li>Protesters showed up to two Drag Queen Story Hour events there this week.</li></ul><p>A group of far-right and anti-gay protesters forced a planned Drag Queen Story Hour event to postpone its reading in the United Kingdom this week, after a crowd of demonstrators gathered outside the library where it was set to take place. </p><p>About 30 protesters showed up at the event in the city of Bristol with counter protesters arriving after, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-bristol-62335147">according to the BBC</a>. Police at the scene arrested one woman on suspicion of assault, according to the report, but later released her.</p><p>"Officers attended to facilitate peaceful protest and enable library staff and visitors, the event organisers and the wider community to go about their lawful business," a police spokesperson said, according to the BBC.</p><p>The protest in Bristol is one of several incidents in recent months where far-right groups have targeted drag events intended for children and families. In the United States and the UK, right-wing influencers have pushed an online campaign that baselessly accuses drag performers of sexually "grooming" children and promotes long standing anti-LGBTQ conspiracies.  </p><p>A Drag Queen Story Hour is an event where a drag queen reads stories to children, often at a library or another similar venue. At the scheduled Tuesday event at Henleaze Library in Bristol, a librarian instead read to the children and parents who showed up, according to the BBC report.</p><p>A similar clash occurred in Reading in the UK on Monday, <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2022/07/27/protesters-terrify-children-by-storming-drag-queens-story-hour-17078584/">Metro reported</a>. In that incident, the story hour went ahead as scheduled, but protesters entered the library. The protesters accused parents who brought their children to the reading of participating in "child-grooming," the report said.</p><p>Other protesters at the Monday demonstration remained outside and taunted organizer Sab Samuel and the parents who brought children to the event, the report said. Police escorted Samuel outside of the library for their own safety, according to Metro.</p><p>These anti-gay protests in the UK have been organized by the same British groups that previously protested measures to stem the spread of COVID-19 and vaccines to prevent serious cases of the disease, according to the BBC report.</p><p>Some of the protesters came from Alpha Men Assemble, <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/xgdg7d/covid-conspiracy-theorists-alpha-men-assemble-hold-combat-training-sessions-in-uk">a conspiracy theorist group</a> that is part of the sovereign citizen movement and whose adherents believe they have the right to opt out of laws that they disagree with, the BBC reported. Others in attendance came to represent the Independent Nationalist Network, a small group associated with the far-right and unofficially led by Richard Lumby, a former organizer for the extreme-right British National Party, according to anti-racism organization <a href="https://hopenothate.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/state-of-hate-2022-v1_17-March-update.pdf">Hope Not Hate</a>.</p><p>The incidents in the UK appear to indicate that the anti-gay disinformation campaign baselessly attempting to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drag-queens-children-lgbtq-right-wing-libsoftiktok-idaho-patriot-front2022-6">associate LGBTQ people with pedophilia and "grooming"</a> extends beyond the borders of the US, where drag queens for months have been targeted by right-wing politicians and influencers.</p><p>A leader of a neo-Nazi group <a href="https://www.insider.com/neo-nazi-leader-arrested-drag-queen-story-hour-2022-7">was arrested at a Drag Story Hour event in Boston</a> last weekend. About 20 men showed up wearing black face masks and held a banner that read "Pedo scum off our streets." Members of the far-right Proud Boys group also disrupted a Drag Queen Story Hour at a library in California <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/06/13/proud-boy-drag-queen/">last month</a>, resulting in local authorities launching a hate crime investigation. </p>

Some investor's thought Budweiser Asia's proposed $64 billion valuation was too high, and selling off its slowing Australia business could reduce that price tag. </p><p>Carlton and United, the Australian-based brewery being sold to Asahi, joined AB InBev in 2016 through its acquisition of SAB Miller. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="9054779" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sabrina-ionescu">Sabrina Ionescu</keyword> is a bona fide <keyword id="152792" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="WNBA">WNBA</keyword> star just six games into her professional career.</li><li>On Tuesday, she became the youngest player in league history to earn a <keyword id="11286962" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="triple-double">triple-double</keyword>.</li><li>She's orchestrating an epic Liberty turnaround, as the team is already exceeding expectations.</li></ul><p>Just six games into her professional career, Sabrina Ionescu is proving she's ready for WNBA superstardom.</p><p>The do-it-all point guard racked up her first WNBA triple-double Tuesday night as her <keyword id="747448" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="New-York-Liberty">New York Liberty</keyword> hosted a solid Minnesota Lynx squad at the Barclays Center. Her 26-point, 10-rebound, and 12-assist performance makes her just the ninth WNBA player, the first of her franchise, and by far the youngest in league history to achieve the rare feat.</p><p>And to top it all off, New York got the win.</p><div type="image" title="sabrina ionescu" height="1406" width="1875" msid="82782509" hostid="261"></div><p>"Obviously, getting a triple-double in a win is what's important," Ionescu said after the game. "If I got that in a loss, it wouldn't mean anything to me ... but it's definitely pretty cool."</p><p>The Liberty have long been WNBA bottom-dwellers despite their status as one of just three remaining original franchises in the league. But Ionescu - the NCAA's all-time triple-double leader and the only player in Division-I history to rack up 2,000 points, 1,000 assists, and 1,000 rebounds - represented an opportunity for head coach Walt Hopkins to usher in a new era.</p><div type="image" title="Sabrina Ionescu" height="1405" width="1874" msid="82782513" hostid="261"></div><p>In selecting her with the first overall pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft, New York hoped to turn over a new leaf and leave its losing ways in the past - and the Liberty's vision is quickly coming to fruition. The former Oregon Ducks superstar is orchestrating a full-fledged renaissance in New York. With their win over WNBA legend Sylvia Fowles, reigning Rookie of the Year Crystal Dangerfield, and the ever-formidable Lynx, the Liberty are 3-0 on the season - officially surpassing their 2020 win total and marking their hottest start in 14 years.</p><p>"The 3-0 start is a big deal," Hopkins said. "That's pretty special to get out to this. This team getting to see what they are capable of early is a big deal for us."</p><p>"It's been pretty fun to watch," he added.</p><div type="image" title="new york liberty" height="682" width="910" msid="82782515" hostid="261"></div><p>Ionescu surely isn't the only star sporting seafoam this season; she isn't even New York's leading scorer. Betnijah Laney, the league's most improved player last year, joined Hopkins' squad in free agency and appears to have once again made a massive leap over the offseason. She's averaging a team-high 23.3 points per game for the Liberty and ranks third in scoring across the entire WNBA - sitting just behind two All-Stars in Breanna Stewart and DeWanna Bonner.</p><p>But there's little doubt that Ionescu is at the center of it all, facilitating New York's offense and breaking down opposing defenses to unlock opportunities for Laney and her other teammates. The Liberty's 11-point victory Tuesday evening is just the latest example; between her scoring and assist output, Ionescu was responsible for a whopping 56 of New York's 86 points on the night.</p><p>That's 65% of her team's offense, for those keeping track.</p><div type="image" title="sabrina ionescu" height="1666" width="2222" msid="82782517" hostid="261"></div><p>"It's not in any way to downplay Sabrina because she's unbelievable, but I feel lucky with this whole group of players," Hopkins said. "They feed off of each other, they give to each other, they're so unselfish, they're such good listeners, they're so coachable, and it starts with Sab [Ionescu], Betnijah [Laney], and Sami [Whitcomb]."</p><p>"But it's undoubtedly special to coach Sabrina Ionescu," he added. "I feel lucky."</p><p>Ionescu leading a remarkable turnaround on one of the league's oldest teams, in one of its biggest but most notoriously challenging markets, and doing it in hardly any time at all.</p><p>Plus, she's pulling it off with flair. Her triple-double against Minnesota came complete with <a href="https://twitter.com/WNBALead/status/1394799270868422660">flashy passes</a>, pullup jumpers, drives to the basket, and <a href="https://twitter.com/nyliberty/status/1394850556070481923">even a three from the logo</a>. And four nights earlier, she drained a <a href="https://www.insider.com/sabrina-ionescu-wnba-game-winner-new-york-liberty-2021-5">dazzling game-winner from beyond the arc</a> to open the WNBA season with a bang.</p><p>Since then, <a href="https://www.insider.com/wnba-mvp-rankings-for-2021-season-based-on-narrative-2021-5">her odds to win MVP this season</a> have jumped from 30/1 to 6/1.</p><p>It's still extremely early in Ionescu's WNBA tenure, but those who questioned how her play would translate at the professional level have gotten their answer many times over. She's already garnered the cachet to warrant superstar status, and she's done it faster than anyone - barring Ionescu herself - could have ever imagined.</p><p>"She's not surprising me, necessarily, but she's impressing me," Hopkins said. "I would've told you that would be hard to do coming into this season because I know what she's capable of. And I'd say early on she's exceeded my expectations."</p><p>"I thought it would take her a little bit longer to get this comfortable," he added.</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Brian Ach/Getty Images for Dress for Success Worldwide</span></p><p class="caption">Lazard veteran Jean Greene is joining Bank of America as a managing director.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Bank of America has poached several senior dealmakers just this month as its investment-banking hiring blitz continues.</li><li>The latest to join the firm is Jean Greene, a long-time Lazard banker who worked on a $100 billion brewery merger. </li><li>The bank has made more than two-dozen senior hires amid a substantial turnaround in fortunes from a disappointing 2018. </li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Click here for more BI Prime stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Bank of America's efforts to rejuvenate its dealmaking operations and snatch back market share continue unabated, even amid the Wall Street's typically sleepy summer days.</p><p>The firm has been <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bank-of-america-hires-senior-bankers-amid-investment-bank-turnaround-2019-7">on a hiring blitz for senior investment bankers this year</a>, and several more have signed on to join the firm in recent weeks, according to internal memos seen by Business Insider. </p><p>The firm announced Monday the hiring of Jean Greene, a long-time Lazard industrials banker, according to an internal memo from Americas mergers-and-acquisitions coheads Kevin Brunner and Ivan Farman. </p><p>Greene, who has orchestrated deals including Tyco's $16.5 billion sale to Johnson Controls and Anheuser-Busch InBev's more than $100 billion acquisition of SAB Miller, starts at the firm as a managing director in December, the memo said.</p><p>"<span>We are pleased to announce that </span>Jean Greene<span> will join the firm as a managing director with a primary focus on industrial clients. In this role, she will be responsible for enhancing coverage efforts within the industrials and other sectors to drive the further growth of our business," Brunner and Farman wrote in the memo</span></p><p>A bank spokesman confirmed the contents of the memo. </p><p>Greene's hiring comes on the heels of two other senior investment banking hires this month: The firm announced last week it had added Omid Ahdieh from Wells Fargo as a managing director in its healthcare group, and on August 5th the bank announced it had hired Amy Lissauer from Evercore as the bank's global head of activism and raid defense, according to internal memos seen by Business Insider. </p><p>A little more than halfway through the year, the firm's investment bank has seen its fortunes improve substantially compared with a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bank-of-america-suffers-talent-losses-amid-investment-banking-drought-2018-10">disappointing campaign in 2018</a><span> </span>that saw the firm lose market and key executives.</p><p>The firm reclaimed the third-position on the investment-banking league tables in the first half of the year, after falling to fourth in 2018, according to Dealogic. Only a few brands try to move beyond this tokenism. <br /><br />For an industry that is obsessed with breaking the clutter, Mansi Shanbag, Lead Copywriter, WATConsult pointed out how brands love spamming when it comes to pride month and queer rights. She said that brands add to the clutter by simply rainbow-washing and not actually contributing to change. She had a simple advice to offer to those brands who rainbow wash, talk to queer folks around you and rework on your campaign if it doesn’t bring about change.<br /><br />We caught up with Shanbag to further discuss changing representation in ads, moving beyond tokenism in India, choosing the right approach while working on diverse campaigns, how can organisations build an inclusive culture on the inside and much more.<br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Q. That the situation is better, and people are more accepting towards different identities and existences. Well, that may be true for some. But ‘some’ is not encouraging enough. The movement in itself has picked up a huge following as more and more queer individuals are finding the strength and comfort to stand up and stand out. More allies are presenting themselves on the daily. The movement is growing, sure. But, for every two positive, affirmative experiences I’ve had as a queer person in the industry personally, I’ve had one <em>‘arey ye sab bakwaas mujhe mat dikhaao.’</em> Always two steps forward, one step back. But I guess that is still one step forward, right? <br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Q. How do you feel about pride-themed merchandise?" text="Q. How do you feel about pride-themed merchandise?"><span data-til="noop">Q. How do you feel about pride-themed merchandise?</span></cmsannotation><br /><br />I have a love-hate relationship with pride-themed merchandise. While I am a sucker for all things pride, every time I am offered an opportunity to purchase pride themed merchandise, in good conscience, I am unable to add to cart until I have had the chance to research what that brand has actually done for the community. It is so very easy to stick a rainbow on your product, your logo, your name for a month and do absolutely nothing to actually contribute to the movement. I mean, more than anything, it's important for brands to fix the way they look at Pride month. In that way, I don’t have to do 30-minutes' worth of research for a simple purchase! <br /><br />By tagging a rainbow across your page and no actual actions to follow that up with, simply proves that the brand is publicly admitting that they don’t mean the support they claim to extend at all! <br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Q. I’m not a person in touch with my emotions, but the delicate treatment of it touched my heart. Netflix’s Valentine’s Day short film was also on top of my ‘so adorable, let me watch it again’ list for so long. I don’t know how to answer this question without offending many people, but I have not come across many ads or campaigns that check all the boxes, that are wonderful in their portrayal of the community, and that have a positive impact or bring about a tangible change all at the same time. <br /><br />Of course, I have a lot more to say about ads that got it wrong or made me cringe! If you make a queer ad and you start it with sexy, seductive music, I am already mad at you. The reduction of the community’s description to ‘sex-crazed’ is rampant in most representations of the queer community. I genuinely don’t know where that stems from. I have friends, both queer and otherwise, and believe me, eroticism is the last possible differentiating factor! <br /><br />There’s so much that can go right and so much that can go wrong, it’s just good sense to look at any pride campaign idea with a fine-toothed comb, weed out the problem areas, and focus on positive consequences. And if by chance, you see it not doing any good, let’s bench it, work on it further. <br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Q. This word sits at the very top of my tongue like sand every year for a whole month. See, you know that line? A person is smart, but people are foolish? That doesn’t work at all in this context. Consumers are smart these days. They almost ALWAYS know when a brand is resorting to rainbow-washing and when they actually want to and are bringing about a change. So, ONLY indulge in mere rainbow-washing as a brand if you are willing to put a target over your head, because we almost always know. Might sound menacing, but truly, I mean it! <br /><br />To avoid getting caught in this trap, the first thing you can do as a brand is reach out to the queer population within your own company or otherwise. Talk to them, ask for their opinions, their insights will bring you so much insight and so much soul to your campaign. I don’t think I’ve ever come across a member of the LGBT+ community that wasn’t willing to take the time out to educate people about the movement or give them two cents. <br /><br />Right now, we are all caught in the vortex that is ‘breaking the online clutter.’ But I don’t think we realize how much we add to the clutter by simply rainbow-washing and not actually contributing to change. <br /><br />BRANDS ALWAYS WANT TO BREAK CLUTTER. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PRIDE MONTH, THEY ARE ALL ABOUT SPAMMING. <br /><br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Q. If there’s no safety, there’s no trust. <br /><br />Very recently, our Group Head – HR reached out to me while formulating some online forms to understand what options she should include in the gender/pronouns bit. I was so very touched by this! Change is slow, but change is here. <br /><br />Apart from these options, there also needs to be a community of sorts within the office. I have made life-long friends working alongside queer individuals, people I have befriended because they would understand me better. A support system like that goes a long way.
