Ecommerce: The trends to watch out for in 2022

The report also terms extreme operational complexity as the roadblocks for ONDC. "With its primary focus of enabling e-commerce for small retailers and MSMEs, ONDC has the potential to enhance retail digital penetration in the country at an even faster pace than what was seen during the COVID lockdowns. The network will enable a wider customer catchment to small retailers and direct customer access to MSMEs, creating millions of million-dollar businesses," said the report. Using an open source protocol, ONDC switches the approach from closed platforms to a network that creates interoperability across all on boarded applications, says the report. "This interoperability enables unbundling, which allows all participants to play to their strengths -- a banking app with millions of consumers focuses on boarding/engaging consumers while a SaaS provider for online sellers handholds the sellers. Further, the buyers get to stick to their app of choice for accessing a broad selection while sellers do not need to spend time and capital in working with multiple platforms in silos. Overall, this can drive capital efficiency for the players, helping them achieve profitability," said the report. As per the report, the roadblocks to success of ONDC include solving the chicken and egg situation between supplier and buyer on boarding, customer complaints redressal (as a fragmented process also creates gaps for the process to fall through), competition issues in case the large incumbents or massive brands are on boarded as well as those related to data privacy and ownership. "Looking at <keyword id="6358921" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="upi" source="Orion">UPI</keyword> evolution, ONDC might also need to decide on its positioning as a non-regulatory authority or becoming a rule-setting body in order to ensure that the network remains fairly attuned for the small retailer to not get marginalised," said the report. Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has been incubated with the primary purpose of supporting grassroots-level entrepreneurship and digitising small, local retailers by making them a participant in India's e-commerce revolution. ONDC is pursuing an open protocol approach that drives interoperability between all onboarded platforms and, hence, lowering the entry barrier for a retailer to sell online. This allows a consumer on any app of his/her choice to buy from any seller across the network even if the seller might not be onboarded on the app that the customer is using. "We appreciate this move by the Indian government to take the digital revolution across the nook and corner of the country and believe that this could be a massive driver in taking India's digital penetration in retail from the current 5-7 per cent to almost 20 per cent in the next 5 years (current IBEF estimate is of 19 per cent by 2030)," said the report. Financial solutions company <keyword id="2777173" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Razorpay">Razorpay</keyword> on Monday said it has acquired AI-based risk tech <keyword id="6395918" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="SAAS">SaaS</keyword> (software-as-a-service) platform <keyword id="11669390" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="tera-finlabs">TERA Finlabs</keyword> for an undisclosed sum. TERA Finlabs is an Indian subsidiary of GAIN Credit, a leading UK digital lender which was launched in 2018 to expand their global footprint in digital lending. This marks the company's third acquisition after foraying into the B2B SME lending space with the launch of Razorpay Capital in 2019, it said in a statement. "The team at TERA FinLabs comes with exceptional domain knowledge in credit underwriting &amp; risk management and we see immense value in TERA Finlabs core lending infrastructure capabilities," said Harshil Mathur, CEO and Co-Founder, Razorpay. Razorpay Capital, along with TERA Finlab's technology capabilities, will be able to service the credit needs of over 10,000 businesses in India by the next year, the company said. Fintech startup Razorpay buys SaaS firm TERA Finlabs

New Delhi, E-commerce in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> grew by 36 per cent and 30 per cent year-over-year (<keyword id="63194" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="YoY">YOY</keyword>) in terms of order volume and gross merchandise value (GMV), respectively, in the fourth quarter of 2020, said a report on Wednesday. However, the average order value declined by 5 per cent in Q4 2020 as compared to same period last year, said the report by <keyword id="2646256" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Unicommerce">Unicommerce</keyword>, an e-commerce focused supply-chain software-as-a-service (SaaS) technology platform, and global management consulting firm Kearney. The report showed that personal care, beauty and wellness as well as <keyword id="34523" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fmcg">FMCG</keyword> and <keyword id="6354525" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="healthcare">Healthcare</keyword> were the biggest beneficiaries and saw volumes grow by 95 percent and 46 percent YoY, respectively. Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities accounted for a 90 per cent YoY incremental volume and <keyword id="2657724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="value-growth">value growth</keyword>. Interestingly, brand websites reported 94 per cent volume growth in Q4 2020 as compared to same period last year. "The e-commerce industry has emerged as the backbone of the retail industry and small and big players have realised the immense potential that e-commerce holds," Kapil Makhija, CEO, Unicommerce, said in a statement. "The e-commerce volume growth continued to accelerate in the last quarter of the pandemic hit year." The report showed that FMCG and pharma as a category reported growth of 92 per cent on the brand website and 62 per cent growth on the marketplaces. Brands going direct to consumer ● As the e-commerce ecosystem matures in India, there is an increasing trend of brands going directly to consumers to offer a great experience to its patrons. While the brands have created their own website, the brands continue to sell on the marketplace as it still drives the majority of the order volume ● The number of consumers shopping directly from the brand’s website is increasing at much faster pace than marketplaces. Rising demand from hinterland of India ● All leading e-commerce companies are focusing on cities beyond the metropolitan cities. Currently, Tier II and beyond cities contribute around 66% of the total online consumer demand in India and this share is expected to rise in the coming years ● Tier III and beyond cities witnessed 53% growth, making it the fastest-growing region. It also observed that the top 5 cities of Tier III contribute only ~22% of the overall Tier III order volume, however in metro’s the top 5 cities constitute 90% of overall order volume ● The top 3 states, by e-commerce volumes, are Delhi NCR 1 , Maharashtra, and Karnataka, and they constitute 65% of overall consumer demand Return orders on decline ● Managing returns is an integral part of running an ecommerce business. The total percentage returns (as a percentage of forward dispatches) saw a decline of ~13% as compared to last year and it constitutes ~17% of the overall order volume as compared to ~20% in the previous year 2 ● E-commerce companies have invested extensively to reduce COD returns as they constitute large part overall returns. The return percentage on COD orders have reduced from 27% in 2019 to 20% in 2020 and for prepaid orders, the total return has decreased from 12% in 2019 to 11% in 2020. But in two days, investors subscribed for 36 times the total number of shares on offer. Today, the stock has listed 25% over its issue price. IndiaMART InterMESH which is the parent company for Indiamart.com – one of the country’s biggest online marketplaces for businesses – is one of the country’s oldest e-commerce ventures that started in 1999. It competes with TradeIndia.com, Alibaba India and ExportersIndia.com. IndiaMart has over 82.7 million registered buyers and 5.55 million supplier storefronts across 54 industries in India at the end of March 2019. This compares to TradeIndia.com’s (founded in 1996) 4.96 million registered users today, ExportersIndia’s (founded in 1997) over 2.7 million users in India. Meanwhile, the global e-commerce giant Alibaba, which launched the India unit in 2008, has over 6 million members with 15,000 Indian SMEs on its platform. However, at IndiaMart competition isn’t a worry. “We are 16X the size of our next competition, our lead is only growing. It’s a winner takes it all kind of a market and we are getting the larger share as the market is growing,” Dinesh Agarwal, founder and CEO of IndiaMart, told Business Insider. In an interview, Agarwal said the IPO process very overwhelming but he was sure of the prospects. “We were confident about our numbers, having built a robust business and having had great numbers since the last three years. Even while the small and medium enterprises had faced temporary setbacks like demonetization, GST and then the elections, we have managed to put out our best performance,” said Agarwal. IndiaMart’s revenue has been growing at 29% per annum for three years. IndiaMart, which was founded in 1999, today claims to have a 60% market share of the online business classifieds space in India, and it focuses on providing a platform to Small &amp; Medium Enterprises (SMEs), large enterprises as well as individuals. Will the success of Indiamart’s IPO open the doors for others too? “That’s a tall claim. I think it all depends on the readiness of the company rather than the market,” he said. With a listing on the stock market, IndiaMart is now open to market scrutiny. But Agarwal is rest assured. “Our business model has been proven time and again. We know how to steer through tough times and accept newer technologies. When we started we were a desktop based company, now we are a mobile B2B company, so we have seen how to evolve with time. We have seen 5 governments too through our time!,” he said. With the IPO proceeds in its kitty, IndiaMart plans to grow bigger. “Today we are attracting larger companies like Jindal Steel, JCB Machines, who are advertising and generating leads on our platform. We have also adapted SaaS - Software as a Service - where we have developed a CRM for SMEs to manage their leads, invoice management and more,” he said. IndiaMart has also started offering payment facilitation services and Agarwal is looking at fintech as a space to grow further. “Going forward we will be looking at buyer purchase financing and SME lending as well,” he said.
