India on Friday successfully placed three satellites into orbit on a rocket completely developed by a four-year-old startup, marking the entry of the private sector into space activities, currently dominated by the state-run behemoth ISRO. <keyword id="7537495" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="skyroot-aerospace" source="Orion">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword>-designed Vikram-S, named in a befitting tribute to the father of the country's space programme <keyword id="29151" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="vikram-sarabhai" source="Orion">Vikram Sarabhai</keyword>, tasted success in its maiden mission. Skyroot Aerospace become the first privately held company in India after the space sector was opened for private players by the Centre in 2020. "I am happy to announce the successful completion of Mission Prarambh, The Beginning, by Skyroot aerospace," a smiling Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the country's space regulator, Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (INSPACe), said from ISRO's Mission Control Center here. The rocket achieved an altitude of 89.5 km and a range of 121.2 km, "exactly what was planned by Skyroot Aerospace," he said. The rocket "worked as planned" and Skyroot Aerospace has demonstrated various capabilities of sub-systems that will go into the orbital launch vehicle, he added. The rocket integrated into the launcher soared after lifting off at the prefixed 11.30 am from the sounding rocket complex at the Indian Space Research Organisation's Satish Dhawan Space Centre, here, about 115 km from Chennai. The Mission unveiled by ISRO Chairman S Somanath has three payloads with two belonging to domestic customers and one from a foreign client. The 6-metre tall launch vehicle is one of the world's first few all-composite rockets that has 3-D printed solid thrusters for spin stability of the launch vehicle. "This is a new beginning for the Indian private sector entering aerospace and a historic moment for all of us," Goenka said. The three payloads riding piggyback on the rocket are from Chennai-based start-up SpaceKidz, Andhra Pradesh-based N-SpaceTech and Armenian BazoomQ Space Research Lab. Vikram-S launched the payloads in about 500 km low inclination orbit. In a departure from the routine, Friday's mission was launched from the complex where sounding rockets were used by ISRO. The Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in <keyword id="6355143" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sriharikota" source="Orion">Sriharikota</keyword> has two launch complexes, each capable of providing complete support for vehicle assembly, check out and launch operations for any kind of missions -- Low Earth Orbit, Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. PSLVs and GSLVs are launched from here. Friday's mission is considered to be a significant milestone for Skyroot Aerospace as it would help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of orbital class space launch vehicles, including many sub-systems and technologies that would be tested before lift-off and post-lift off phases of the launch. 'Fun-Sat', a 2.5 kgs payload belonging to Chennai-based aerospace startup Spacekidz, has been developed by students from India, the United States, Singapore and Indonesia. The 545 kg Vikram launch vehicle consists of the Vikram II and Vikram III series. The technology architecture of the launch vehicle offers unique capabilities like multi-orbit insertion and interplanetary missions while providing customised, dedicated and ride-share options covering a wide spectrum of small satellite customer needs, Skyroot Aerospace said. The company added the rockets can be assembled and launched within 24 hours from any launch site. Vikram-S marks "The Beginning" of private venture in Indian space programme with maiden success

"The fee is reasonable. Skyroot Aerospace's rocket Vikram-S with three small satellites is scheduled for launch on November 18 at 11.30 a.m. "Launch is likely on 18th as the weather is predicted to be ideal. Due to inclement weather, we got an updated launch window of November 15-19, 2022," Chandana said. According to him, the Vikram-S rocket is a scaled down version of Vikram-1 rocket. The former is a single stage rocket whereas the latter is a multi-stage vehicle. "Almost all our systems flying in Vikram-S were designed in-house, except for few sensors which were imported," Chandana said. The rocket will be powered by a single stage to help test and validate the majority of the technologies in the <keyword id="1091" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="vikram" source="Orion">Vikram</keyword> series of rockets. The company plans to have three rocket variants: Vikram I - payload or carrying capacity 480 kg to 500 km low inclination orbit (LIO); 290 kg to 500 km sun synchronous and polar orbit (SSPO); Vikram II - 595 kg to 500 km LIO, 400 kg to 500 km SSPO and Vikram III - 815 kg to 500 km LIO, 560 kg to 500 km SSPO. ISRO's rocket launch and tracking fee is nominal: Skyroot Aerospace

<keyword id="7537495" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="skyroot-aerospace" source="Orion">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword>, which successfully launched the country's first private rocket Vikram-S recently, plans to launch Vikram-1, a much bigger rocket to place satellites into orbit, within a year. The Hyderabad-based space startup also aims to slash the costs of space travel in the future. "..now that we have done the first private rocket launch, Vikram-S, our next plan is to launch Vikram-1 which is a much bigger rocket putting satellites into orbit. That we want to do within a year from now," Pawan Chandana, co-founder of <keyword id="9750118" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="skyroot" source="Orion">Skyroot</keyword>, told PTI here Monday evening. Skyroot also wants to become one of the first few companies in the world that can place satellites into orbit. He said the firm has raised about USD 68 million, which is the largest in the aerospace startup ecosystem in India. "Of course, it took close to four years to raise this kind of capital. Now, we are good for the first few launches to orbit and then, of course, it has been very challenging because first time somebody went to the market and raised such large capital," Chandana said. Skyroot would keep on raising more capital in its journey forward and would like to generate a good amount of revenue as it starts launching next year, he said. Noting that space travel is expensive now, he said his firm aims to slash costs, make it affordable and increase reliability. "Today, the biggest problem is that space travel is very costly. Because, rockets, the only way to go to space are very unreliable. Sometimes, they don't work and are also very expensive. They fall into the sea and then you are building something, throwing it away. It's very costly," he said. Skyroot Aerospace plans to launch another rocket Vikram-1, in one year

Space-tech company Skyroot raises ₹225 cr in pre-Series C funding

From launch vehicles to space tourism, Indian space start-ups aim high

The day is not far when <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> will see its own mega private aerospace company like Elon Musk-owns SpaceX or <keyword id="12232315" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jeff-bezos-run" source="Orion">Jeff Bezos-run</keyword> Blue Origin, taking travellers to the edge of space and beyond, <keyword id="12180756" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="srinath-ravichandran" source="Orion">Srinath Ravichandran</keyword>, co-founder and CEO of rocket startup AgniKul Cosmos, has envisioned. In a chat with IANS, Ravichandran who is ecstatic after Agnikul Cosmos was granted access to the Indian Space Research Organisation (<keyword id="6358064" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro" source="Orion">ISRO</keyword>) facilities and expertise for the development and testing of systems and subsystems of its rockets, said that the pact with ISRO will allow them to ultilise its facilities to test out various sub-systems of their launch vehicle. "This will, in turn, help us with reduced capital expenditure and expedited testing," he said. "India can have its own SpaceX or Blue Origin kind of mega private space firm in the near future. There is so much support from the government and investors are open to invest too in the homegrown spacetech startups," Ravichandran added. The next step, he added, will be to aim multiple launches per year and scale to the extent of having a launch once in two-three weeks. "Beyond that would be about making the vehicles more efficient, thereby providing even cheaper access to customers. We are doing this through a mix of innovations on various technologies in the vehicle," Ravichandran informed. Last month, Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos received the nod by the Department of Space to carry out multiple tests and qualify its single piece 3D-printed semi-cryogenic engine and other systems of its rocket at various ISRO centres. This is the second pact that the Department of Space has signed with a rocket maker, after the first with Hyderabad-based <keyword id="7537495" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="skyroot-aerospace" source="Orion">Skyroot Aerospace</keyword> on September 11. According to Ravichandran, their rocket engines are 100 per cent 3D-printed, that too in a single shot. "This allows us to directly assemble what comes out of the 3D printer in our launch vehicle. The big advantage of this is the ability to provide and enable rapid launch access and, at the same time, make customisable launch vehicles," elaborated Ravichandran. He formed the startup with Moin SPM within IIT-Madras with a seed funding of Rs 3 crore, with an aim to develop and launch its first rocket in 2021 and subsequently develop ability to provide launch service for satellites. The current investors in the spacetech startup are Mayfield India, PI Ventures, Speciale Invest, Beenext, Artha and others. In June, India decided to allow private companies to establish and operate rocket launch sites within and outside the country, subject to prior authorisation from the government. Similarly, any rocket launch (orbital or sub-orbital) from Indian or overseas territory can be carried out only with authorisation from Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center (IN-SPACe), an independent body constituted by the Government of India, under the Department of Space (DOS). The launch could be from own or leased launch site and also from mobile platforms (land, sea or air) as per the Draft National Space Transportation Policy-2020 brought out by the Department of Space. "Now that we also have to plan the entire engine building facility in-house, we are confident that we can control engine making end-to-end in India, thereby not only enabling 'make in India' but also 'design in India'," Ravichandran told IANS. He said that anyone who wants to do a space tech startup should do it today. "Right now is the best time to do a spacetech startup in India. The government has been very forthcoming in terms of the help provided to enable private missions and now would be a good time to get started to get things done," Ravichandran noted. With more startups getting on board, private sector participation in India's space sector will get further momentum this weekend with the launch of ISRO's PSLV-C54. In addition to ISRO's Earth Observation Satellite - 06 (Oceansat-3), the rocket will carry eight nano-satellites. These nanosatellites include Bengaluru-headquartered space tech startup <keyword id="8279723" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="pixxel" source="Orion">Pixxel</keyword>'s third hyperspectral satellite 'Anand' "More than two years in the making and made with a lot of dedication and effort, the team can't wait for the satellite to finally go to space and beam down some amazing #hyperspectral data", Pixxel said. Two <keyword id="15481028" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="thybolt" source="Orion">Thybolt</keyword> spacecraft of private space tech company <keyword id="2623423" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="dhruva-space" source="Orion">Dhruva Space</keyword> will also be co-passengers on board PSLV-C54 which is slated to be launched from the first launch pad of Sriharikota spaceport at 11.56 am on November 26. "It is momentous that on the same day, we will be observing 10 years of Dhruva Space!," the company based out of <keyword id="6354552" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="hyderabad" source="Orion">Hyderabad</keyword> said. The upcoming flight comes close on the heels of the launch of Vikram-S (a sub-orbital launch vehicle from Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace), the first rocket built by a private company in India, on November 18. PSLV-C54 will also carry ISRO Nano Satellite-2 for Bhutan (INS-2B) and four numbers of Astrocast, a technology demonstrator satellite for the Internet of Things (IoT) as the payload from Spaceflight, the USA. According to Bengaluru-headquartered ISRO, EOS-6 is the third-generation satellite in the <keyword id="2310307" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="oceansat" source="Orion">Oceansat</keyword> series. This is to provide continuity services for Oceansat-2 spacecraft with enhanced payload specifications as well as application areas. The payloads are: Ocean Colour Monitor (OCM-3), Sea Surface Temperature Monitor and Ku-Band Scatterometer (SCAT-3) and 'ARGOS' Mission Objectives are: To ensure the data continuity of ocean colour and wind vector data to sustain the operational applications; to improve the applications, some additional datasets such as sea surface temperature and more number of bands in the Optical region for fluorescence and in Infrared region for atmospheric corrections are accommodated, and to develop/improve related algorithms and data products to serve in well- established application areas and to enhance the mission utility. INS-2B (BhutanSat) will have two payloads -- NanoMx and APRS-Digipeater. NanoMx is a multispectral optical imaging payload developed by Space Applications Centre. APRS-Digipeater payload is jointly developed by the Department of Information Technology and Telecom, Bhutan and the U R Rao Satellite Centre, Bengaluru. 'Anand' satellite is a technology demonstrator to demonstrate the capabilities and commercial applications of a miniaturised earth-observation camera for earth observation using a microsatellite in Low Earth Orbit. The Thybolt spacecraft includes a communication payload to enable rapid technology demonstration and constellation development for multiple users. It also demonstrates Store-and-Forward functionality for authorised users in the amateur frequency band. "The satellites shall be deployed by using Dhruva Space Orbital Deployer to perform the specific mission operations for a minimum lifetime of one year," according to the national space agency.
