<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12612257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="kawasaki" source="Orion">Kawasaki</keyword> debuted two <keyword id="11910048" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="robot" source="Orion">robot</keyword>s at 2022 International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo.</li><li>The company provided a demonstration, showing a person riding it's goat-shaped robot.</li></ul><p>Kawasaki, best known for its motorcycles, debuted a four-legged rideable robot at the world's largest robot trade show last week. </p><p>The robot, Bex, was created by the company's <a href="https://event.kawasakirobotics.com/jp/irex2022/en/humanoid/kaleido-slim/">Kaleido program,</a> which has been working on developing humanoid <keyword id="11907543" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="robots" source="Orion">robots</keyword> in Japan <a href="https://event.kawasakirobotics.com/jp/irex2022/en/humanoid/kaleido-slim/">since 2015</a>. Spectators got their first view of the robot at the <a href="https://biz.nikkan.co.jp/eve/irex/">2022 International Robot Exhibition (iREX)</a> in Tokyo. </p><p>Videos from the event show the dexterity of the goat-shaped robot, which can alternate its limbs like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/boston-dynamics-spot-robot-dog-for-sale-for-75000-2020-6">Boston Dynamic's robot dog</a>. The Bex can also lower itself and transport itself on wheels — a move that the program's lead engineer, Masayuki Soube, <a href="https://event.kawasakirobotics.com/jp/irex2022/en/humanoid/kaleido-slim/">said</a> could help provide a short-term solution to the <a href="https://gizmodo.com/watching-a-robot-slip-and-fall-is-way-more-entertaining-1847556442">balance issues robots face.</a></p><p>The video also shows a demonstrator riding astride the Bex, using the robot as a type of vehicle. Riders can control the robot via handlebars. Though, the company did not give any specifics on the robot's speed capacity, the video shows the robot goat moving at a slow pace.</p><p>Kaleido <a href="https://event.kawasakirobotics.com/jp/irex2022/en/humanoid/kaleido-slim/">said</a> on its website that the Bex can carry up to 220 pounds, including human passengers. Soube said the product is still in development, but anticipated it could be used to carry cargo in warehouses and factories. The robot has a modular upper body, meaning the goat construction can be removed if needed.</p><p>The company also debuted a humanoid robot at the Tokyo event. Soube said they created the robot to be used for anything from factory work and disaster relief to nursing home care. In its demonstration, the bi-pedal robot dances and waves at the audience.</p><p>Soube said that traditionally robots have been operated by programmers, but the humanoid robot is able to learn intuitively, using motion capture.</p><p>The practical use of robots has come more into play since the pandemic as companies struggled to combat labor shortages. Last year, American companies <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-shortage-american-companies-order-robots-record-number-staff-2021-11">ordered</a> a record 29,000 robots. </p><p>Insider's Kate Duffy previously reported that companies have turned to robots for some tasks, such as <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gratitude-robots-labor-shortage-staff-employees-supply-chain-2021-11?r=US&amp;IR=T">writing thank-you letters to colleagues</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/restaurant-labor-shortage-bigger-tips-for-staff-after-hired-robot-2021-10?r=US&amp;IR=T">carrying plates</a> from a restaurant kitchen to servers. </p><p>Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said he believes robots will help create a future where "physical work will be a choice." Last summer, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-unveils-tesla-bot-humanoid-robot-based-off-autopilot-2021-8">Tesla revealed plans for</a> its own humanoid robot, Optimus. </p><p>In January, Musk <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-60154782">predicted</a> that the robot would eventually become a bigger business than the company's <keyword id="6358835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="electric-cars" source="Orion">electric cars</keyword> and said Tesla aims to have an Optimus prototype ready by the end of the year.</p>

Motorcycle maker Kawasaki created a rideable electric goat — take a look

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Matt Denton is a British animatronics engineer who has made robots for "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," and "Jurassic World."</strong></li><li><strong>Denton was one of two engineers that built BB-8, the roller-ball droid from the new "Star Wars" films.</strong></li><li><strong>He has also built a giant spider-like vehicle named Mantis, the world's largest hexapod robot.</strong></li><li><strong>Mantis can be driven from within a pod at the centre of its legs, moving at a gentle&#xa0;1 km per hour.</strong></li></ul><p>Animatronics engineer Matt Denton has worked on some pretty mindblowing projects. He's built special effects robots for "Star Wars," "Harry Potter," and "Jurassic World."</p><p>But his latest project may just be his most ambitious yet. Denton has created a huge, six-legged driveable robot that has been compared to a spider. And it's won him a Guinness World Record.</p><p>Denton was interested in robotics from an early age, "I was mad for technical Lego," he told Business Insider. In fact, he still likes to build machines with Lego, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsyFLqrX6Ss">as is attested by his YouTube channel</a>.</p><p>"I always loved special effects in films, 'Star Wars,' 'Blade Runner' and things," Denton said, but he never thought he would make a career out of it. Aged 20, Denton spent a summer working for a special effects company and dropped out of university to throw himself into the industry. He ended up carving out a niche for himself making high-end control systems for film animatronics and has now been in the business for 25 years.</p><h2>Creating BB-8</h2><p>Denton has turned his hand to some fantastical creations, including a T-rex for "Jurassic World" and a six-legged tortoise for "Harry Potter." His most famous is BB-8, the tiny roller-ball droid from the new "Star Wars" films. Denton made BB-8 along with engineer Joshua Lee and two puppeteers, although he sometimes steps into a puppeteering role himself.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>A career highlight for Denton was surprising people at a panel discussion ahead of the release of "The Force Awakens" with a fully-functional BB-8. "Everyone had assumed BB-8 was CG [computer graphics]," said Denton, who was controlling the droid from the wings. "The crowd went nuts, it was a defining moment and a great magic trick."</p><p><strong>You can watch the moment BB-8 surprises the crowd here:</strong></p><h2>Building a rideable robot spider</h2><p>When he's not bringing beloved film characters to life, Denton gets down to some hardcore robotics. He recently won a <a href="http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/news/2018/9/video-this-star-wars-inspired-walking-robot-weighs-two-tonnes-and-travels-at-les-540955">Guinness World Record</a> for building the world's largest rideable hexapod, called Mantis. In layman's terms, that means he built a massive, driveable, spider-like robot.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Mantis is five metres in diameter, whereas BB-8 is about 0.5 metres, making Mantis about 10 times larger as its spherical little brother. Denton told Guinness World Records that he first became fascinated with walking machines when he saw the huge mechanical AT-ATs in "The Empire Strikes Back."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Denton started building Mantis back in 2009, by which time he'd already built 20 or so much smaller hexapods, including one for "Harry Potter."</p><p>The project started when Denton was approached by a company to build a 200-tonne hexapod that would function underwater to explore the seabed. Denton was interested in making Mantis as a creative engineering project, as well as to trial-run any problems he might encounter with the 200-tonne machine. In the end, he got funding for both.</p><p>At the time he only had a basic knowledge of hydraulics, which are a key component of Mantis, so he had to tackle a "massive, steep learning curve."</p><p>The underwater machine project was ultimately abandoned, as the company opted for more traditional methods of sea-floor navigation using tracks and wheels. But Denton kept going with Mantis, and in 2012 it was completed.</p><h2>How Mantis works</h2><p>Mantis may be a gigantic robot spider (or technically an insect, as it has six legs rather than eight) but it is surprisingly light-footed for a machine weighing just under 2 tonnes.</p><p>Its weight is distributed such that each footpad exerts the same amount of pressure as a human foot. It moves at just over 1 km per hour, but Denton says it's not about speed, but rather the robots ability to navigate difficult terrain. Mantis can be driven from inside the cab, or using a wifi connection.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Since then Denton has taken Mantis to various festivals and events, including Bestival, Electromagnetic Field Camp, and even a forestry event in Sweden. But he doesn't see Mantis as a novelty and has been approached multiple times about repurposing it for commercial interests.</p><p>Denton told Business Insider that he was approached by a Brazilian gold mining company. They were interested in using Mantis to navigate forested areas for drilling, without having to chop down trees. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Honda launched a rectangular electric scooter that costs $995. </li><li>It's a throwback to the Motocompo, a foldable Honda scooter from the 1980s that fit in a trunk. </li></ul><p>Who says <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dealers-turning-away-evs-velectric-cars-demand-cools-inventory-2023-8">electric vehicles</a> are too pricey for average Americans? Honda just revealed one that costs only $995.</p><p>No, the Motocompacto is not a car. It's a quirky, little electric scooter for bopping around town or a college campus. And I'm obsessed.</p><p>I mean, what's not to love?</p><div type="image" title="The Honda Motocompacto electric scooter on a beach. " height="646" width="1200" msid="103734662" hostid="261" sizebytes="37514"></div><p>The Motocompacto is shaped like a cute, rideable suitcase. It maxes out at 15 mph and has a range of 12 miles, Honda says. It even comes with an adorable acceleration claim of zero to 15 mph in seven seconds. It offers onboard storage for its charging cord and other stuff one might bring along for a ride.</p><p>Better yet, it's the spiritual successor to one of Honda's coolest vehicles of all time, the 1980s Motocompo. That was a tiny, folding motorcycle that fit into the trunk of a hatchback. The idea was for buyers to park somewhere convenient, scoot around town on the Motocompo, and drive home.</p><p>Similarly, the Motocompacto's handlebars, seat, and rear wheel can collapse inward, turning the scooter into its own carrying case. Honda says the compact, rectangular shape should make the scooter easier to stow away in a vehicle or on public transportation.</p><p>It comes with a carrying handle, but at 41.3 pounds it won't exactly be an easy one-handed lift.</p><div type="image" title="The Honda Motocompacto electric scooter in its folded state. " height="1700" width="2667" msid="103734664" hostid="261" sizebytes="46574"></div><p>When you think about it, the combo of an electric scooter and an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/kia-ev6-hyundai-ioniq-5-genesis-gv60-tesla-rival-ev-2023-9">electric vehicle</a> makes a lot of sense — since you could theoretically charge the smaller device off of the larger vehicle's battery pack.</p><p>Several carmakers sell EVs with power outlets in them. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rivian-electric-ev-truck-pickup-coolest-features-r1t-2021-10">Rivian</a>, a startup that makes electric pickups and SUVs, includes a wireless speaker and flashlight that stay charged using dedicated docks. That could work for scooters too.</p><div type="image" title="The Honda Motocompacto. Honda's weird new suitcase-shaped scooter is a throwback to one of its coolest vehicles of all time

The company has also claimed that the humanoid has a high emotional quotient, can detect human emotions, and has advanced vision capabilities.<br /><br />CyberOne features two microphones and two cameras, allowing it to hear and see in three dimensions. It uses microphones to analyze human vocal expressions and can detect 45 different emotions.<br /><br />The CyberOne weighs 52 kg and has a height of 5 feet 8 inches (177 cm). It can walk at a speed of 3.6 km per hour and grip objects while it walks.<br /><br />It is to be noted that CyberOne is still in development and may take a long time before it is ready for commercial launch. Each unit of CyberOne can cost between CNY 600,000 to CNY 700,000 (approx. ₹71 lakh to ₹82.8 lakh). The company will have to significantly reduce the price if it plans on building it on a large scale.<br /><br />The CyberOne is still in the early stages of development and cannot be compared to other humanoid robots, such as the Atlas from <keyword id="1005599" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="boston-dynamics" source="Orion">Boston Dynamics</keyword>. Boston Dynamics worked on Atlas for over 25 years and continues to develop it.<br /><br />Elon Musk-led Tesla revealed that the company is working on a robot named <keyword id="545507" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="optimus" source="Orion">Optimus</keyword>, which will be launched in 2023. Emmanuel Macron tweets wild video of a man riding a hoverboard, and hints it could be used by the French army

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Kingda Ka is the tallest <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/here-are-the-six-most-extreme-roller-coasters-in-the-world-2017-3">roller coaster</a> in the world. At 139 meters, it's nearly the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza.</li><li>But what if someone built a roller coaster as tall as the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/burj-khalifa-dubai-uae-tallest-building-in-the-world-2019-1">Burj Khalifa</a>, the tallest building in the world? </li><li>Although the engineering would be possible, it wouldn't be safe to ride because intense wind resistance, flying pieces of debris, and bird strikes could injure or even kill riders.</li><li>Plus, the high g-forces could cause people to black out as blood moves away from their heads and towards the rest of their bodies.</li></ul><p><em>Following is a transcript of the video.</em></p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> This is Kingda Ka, the tallest roller coaster in the world. At 139 meters, it's nearly the height of the Great Pyramid of Giza. But what if we built a roller coaster even taller? What if there was a coaster that went as high as the tallest building on Earth, the Burj Khalifa? Well, it's a good thing we don't, because strapping in to a ride like that might be the last thing you ever did.</p><p>The true limit of a roller coaster's height has less to do with engineering and more to do with the limits of the human body, because the higher the roller coaster, the faster you'll drop under gravity. And on our 800-meter-tall mega-coaster, riders would hit the blistering top speed of 370 kilometers per hour. Going this fast, the wind alone would cause serious damage. For comparison, Here's what a wind tunnel does to a human face.</p><p><strong>Matt Calabrese:</strong> Your skin would pull back at the cheeks. Your eyes would be seeing a lot of damage if there was debris in the air or anything like that. And your ears would probably start popping, which wouldn't be fun.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Some of this is already a problem for Formula Rossa, the fastest roller coaster in the world. It reaches a top speed of 240 kilometers per hour, and anyone who rides it has to wear goggles to protect their eyes, because at those speeds, dust and debris in the air turn into tiny missiles. Speaking of missiles, dust and debris wouldn't be the only problem.</p><p><strong>Calabrese:</strong> The main thing I'd be worried about is if you had a bird strike.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> Yes, a bird strike. It's rare, but it can happen. </p><p><strong>Matus:</strong> And I was like, oh my God, oh my God.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> At lower speeds, it could leave you with a bad bruise or a painful welt, like with the Kingda Ka rider. But at 370 kilometers per hour, you and the unfortunate bird would likely die from the collision. Now, you could just wear a motorcycle helmet and protective clothing before strapping in, but there's another problem that no amount of protective gear could fix: g-force.</p><p>It's the force that makes you feel heavier than normal, like when you're riding through a coaster loop. Normally, you experience 1 g-force, but when you rapidly accelerate, like when you're going through a coaster loop, the g-force ramps up, which causes blood to rush away from your head and often makes riders feel light-headed. For this reason, most roller coasters don't subject you to more than 5 g's, tops. But we're not talking about your typical coaster. If you enter a loop on the Khalifa coaster at more than 300 kilometers per hour...</p><p><strong>Calabrese:</strong> Blood will start to move away from your head and to the rest of your body, and that means you'll start to gray out and then possibly black out, and that's not good.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> So what can engineers do to protect riders as they continue to build taller, faster coasters? The boring option is to slow down the ride by adding brakes along the first drop. But there's a better, more exciting way around the problem: loops. Really big loops.</p><p><strong>Calabrese:</strong> All we have to do is manipulate the curvature to maintain the g-forces that we want. So instead of a tight loop that you would see on a low-speed roller coaster, you'd need big, swooping loops and large radius curvature to make sure that you're not generating huge amounts of g-force at that speed. As you go through the roller coaster and you lose speed due to air resistance and drag in the wheels, your speed drops, and your curvature will get tighter.</p><p><strong>Narrator:</strong> That's why many roller coasters start with one big loop, followed by a series of faster, lighter ones. So in theory, our Khalifa coaster is rideable, as long as we add big enough loops and hand out protective eye gear. That said, we'll probably never see a roller coaster get much taller than they are today, because nowadays there are cheaper and more efficient ways to thrill and terrify riders.</p><p>For example, hydraulic or magnetic launching systems accelerate riders to extreme speeds, without needing to build an expensive, giant drop. So perhaps the only reason to ever build something like a Khalifa coaster would be for the view.</p><p><strong>Calabrese:</strong> I love roller coasters with beautiful views. And it adds so much to the experience, having a view on the way up. So any beautiful location, love to see a roller coaster in order to get a different perspective on those views.</p>

On Sunday, he was awarded the league's annual <a href="http://www.worldsurfleague.com/bigwaveawards/winners">XXL Biggest Wave Award</a>&#xa0;after the judges calculated that the height of the wave was approximately 80 feet. That tops a 78-foot wave surfed by Garrett McNamara in 2011 at the same beach.&#xa0;</p><p>"<span>I had an amazing dream the night before, where I was talking to myself: 'You gotta go straight down. You gotta go straight down.' I didn't really know what it meant. But I figured somebody was talking to me," Koxa said at the awards show, according to surf forecasting website <a href="https://www.surfline.com/surf-news/rodrigo-koxa-breaks-guinness-world-record-80-footer-nazare/23691">Surfline</a>.&#xa0;</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>A huge comeback</h2><p>Koxa's&#xa0;massive wave is something of a redemption for his surfing career. In 2014, he almost died surfing a wave at Nazare. He said he spent the next few months recuperating and training to get back in the water.</p><p>"<span>I try to surf big waves all my life, and I had a huge experience in 2014 where I almost died at Nazaré," Koxa said. "Four months later, I had bad dreams, I didn't travel, I got scared, and my wife helped me psychologically. Now, I'm just so happy, and this is the best day of my life. Thank you to WSL, it's a dream come true."</span><span></span></p><p><span>Capturing the XXL Biggest Wave Award is something of a holy grail to the tight-knight cabal of surfers who travel the world hunting for the biggest waves. Besides the international recognition, the award comes with a hefty cash prize - which helps offset the travel and training expenses.</span></p><p><span>Though it's an intensely sought-after prize, it's difficult to accurately measure wave height. To determine how large a wave is, the judges - a mix of professional surfers, former professionals, oceanographers, and other wave experts - estimates a surfer's "crouch height," then use an oversize image of the wave to generate a scale that gives them a roughly accurate measurement.&#xa0;</span></p><h2>Big waves, real risks</h2><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>The waves are so big at Nazare that they&#xa0;move too fast for the surfers to paddle into - so the surfers get towed on jet-skis. The jet-skis also act as a safety measure, picking up the surfers from the impact zone after they ride the waves or rescuing them when they go down.</span></p><p><span>As a place to surf, Nazare itself is distinguished by its bathymetry, or the shape of the land under the water. In front of the beach lies a steep underwater canyon that funnels the ocean's energy onto a shallow sandbar.&#xa0;When large storm systems kick swell towards the Portuguese coast, that pent-up energy gets released abruptly over the shallow water, creating some of the largest rideable waves in the world.</span></p><p><span>The risks of surfing at Nazare are serious, though. Andrew Cotton, a professional big-wave rider, broke his back surfing the same day Koxa caught his wave. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWQnfLLHyKo&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=19">BI Screenshot/Motor Trend Channel</a></span></p><p class="caption">Nope.</p></div><p></p></div></div>As the rumor mill about the Apple Car grinds on and on and on, we keep getting little clues about what "Project Titan" may or may not be all about.</p><p>The two latest pieces of the puzzle: Tim Cook made some obscure statements that suggest a recent investment in a Chinese car-sharing service is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tim-cook-hints-at-two-new-product-categories-from-apple-2016-7">going to provide support, somehow, for the Apple Car</a>, alleged to arrive in 2021 (!); and Apple put somebody with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bob-mansfield-to-lead-apple-car-project-2016-7">zero automotive experience</a> in charge of the project, although he was reportedly close to Steve Jobs.</p><p>My colleague Steve Kovach has been all over both these announcements. </p><p>From my perspective, having followed the up-to-now completely inconsequential progress of the mysterious Project Titan, I'm ready to say that if you think Apple will be selling a car by 2021, you're going to be disappointed.</p><p>Here's why. That's five years down the road. The Apple Car project has been underway for about two years. So we're being asked to accept that it will take Apple <em>seven years</em> to create and market an automobile?</p><p>That's about two entire product cycles for a major automaker. Heck, Ford designed, engineered, and went racing in about a year and half with the new $400,000 Ford GT supercar - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ford-gt-wins-24-hours-of-le-mans-2016-6">and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_left"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot via Ford Performance</span></p><p class="caption">Ford's Le Mans winner.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>If it's going to take Apple that long to bring a car to market, then you can only draw two conclusions: that Apple wants to develop a vehicle to use future technologies that aren't practical or accessible today; or that Apple is completely incompetent when it comes to this car project.</p><p>It's possible that the undertaking is just a sort of sideline experiment to keep pace with Google and Tesla. That would make sense. </p><p>But the the Apple Car isn't a car. </p><p>And based on Cook's comments, I don't think it's trending in that direction, anyway. There is no Apple Car, and there never will be

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Motorcyclist</span></p><p class="caption">Looking good.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Motorcyclist Magazine has named its 2016 Motorcycle of the Year, and it's a good one: the <a href="http://www.triumphmotorcycles.com/bikes/classics/street-twin/2016/street-twin">Triumph Street Twin</a>.</p><p><span>"To determine the Motorcycle of the Year, we analyze every motorcycle available to us and not only select the very best representation of a new motorcycle, but also the bike that helps move the industry forward," Andy Leisner, VP, Group Publisher of Bonnier Motorcycle Group, said in a press statement. </span></p><p><span>"Of the great motorcycles available in 2016, the Triumph Street Twin delivers on all of its promises - attractive looks, comfort, electronic rider aids and strong performance, all at an amazingly reasonable price. It appeals to both entry-level riders and experts."</span></p><p><span>The Street Twin, the latest installment in Triumph's legendary Bonneville lineup, has a 900cc engine, which isn't exactly small, but it isn't large, either. It hits a sweetspot for riders; the Street Twin isn't at all underpowered, but it isn't intimidating. </span></p><p><span>The retro styling fits into the currently quite popular "standard" bike segment. This is a crowded arena, with great bikes on offer from Ducati, Indian, Harley-Davidson, and the established Japanese manufacturers. But Triumph has always played in this space, so it has the DNA to deliver automatic credibility.</span></p><p><span>The Street Twin has a light, contemporary look - without losing that made-in-England, throwback Triump charm - and is loaded with tech features, including ride-by-wire throttle control and advanced traction control, all of which enhance safety and rideability. </span></p><p><span>But the best thing about this bike, as the Motorcyclist reviewers noted, is probably the price: it's less than $9,000, and it's all Triumph, all the time. The Triumph Street Twin is Motorcyclist's bike of the year for 2016

<p class="source"><span>Radical Transport</span></p><p class="caption">The Mark Cuban funded Radical Moov hoverboard is intended for serious transportation</p>Radical Transport had just gotten its first hoverboard prototype working in February 2016 when the nascent market faced a potentially game-ending crisis: some of the first hoverboards, made by other companies, had begun catching fire.<p><span>Nick Fragnito and Evan Williams, the founders of Radical Transport, weren't overly concerned though. They knew their board, the Radical MOOV, would be going after a different market. And they had Mark Cuban's wallet and strategy team behind them. </span></p><p><span>Cuban told Business Insider that he viewed the exploding hoverboards as an opportunity. The team he was backing was "</span><span>confident they would be able to build a board that was better and far far safer," he said in an emailed message.</span></p><p><span>Cuban said his role in the endeavor is limited to "writing checks" and providing strategic advice, while Fragnito and Williams focus on the engineering and marketing. </span></p><h2><span>Not a toy</span></h2><p><span>The company is currently testing prototypes and can't say for sure when the MOOV will be available for purchase. But it's clear that the MOOV is being positioned as a legitimate mode of transportation. With its $1,500 price tag, the MOOV will be in the same price range as serious transportation devices like an Urbe bike or moped.</span></p><p><span>"It is much more vehicle than it is a child's toy," said Fragnito.</span></p><p>One of the biggest changes is a solid state riding platform that differs from the traditional halved swivel design. The solid board allows for a steering system based on weight rather than foot position, which Fragnito said creates a sportier rider experience. The system can also be tailored to the rider's skill level; users can choose between different rider profiles from novice to advanced in the company's app. The board also has a handle -  making it easier for daily riding, and colorful interchangeable deck boards for personalization. </p><p>Fragnito said that before the MOOV he wouldn't have considered himself a hoverboard purchaser but sees his product as an "electric rideable." He and Williams have started incorporating the boards into their daily<span> </span>lives and say the devices work as an easy tool for coffee stops and lunch breaks. "It really is a showstopper, it's sleek and doesn't look like a toy," said Fragnito.</p><h2>Straight outta Dallas</h2><p><span>Cuban recruited Fragnito and Williams in August of 2015 with the intent of buying the original hoverboard patent from Shane Chen and having the duo be his engineering team. Shortly after purchasing the license to pursue the patent, Cuban <a href="http://www.techtimes.com/articles/106572/20151113/mark-cuban-hoverboard-lawsuit-shane-chen.htm">dropped the idea</a> and announced he'd make his own board. Fragnito and Williams had previously taken a trip to China to observe Chen's factory, and already knew they'd need to completely redesign the traditional hoverboard process to make the product safe and the business scalable. </span></p><p><span>The board is sourced and manufactured in Dallas, Texas and aims to become one of a half dozen companies compliant with the UL 's hoverboard safety standard. The Consumer Products Safety Commission issued a statement in February of 2016 that banned retail outlets from selling boards that don't comply with the UL's standard.</span></p><p><span>The safety, innovative engineering and made-in-the-USA pedigree will help set the MOOV apart, the team believes. Mark Cuban's pricey new hoverboard wants to turn the 2-wheelers into grown-up transportation

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>We may not have flying cars yet, but we could finally be getting a hoverboard.&#xa0;<p>Lexus has built a functional prototype of a hoverboard and it looks just about as impressive as Lexus cars.</p><p>The company recently posted a video of skateboard-like device, which it calls SLIDE, <a href="http://www.lexus-int.com/amazinginmotion/" target="_blank">on its website.</a> The company calls the device the "first real, rideable hoverboard," however, the video does not show the board in action.&#xa0;</p><p>The technology behind the futuristic device is magnetic levitation.&#xa0;It uses&#xa0;<span>liquid nitrogen-cooled semiconductors and magnets for its frictionless movement, <a href="http://www.lexus-int.com/amazinginmotion/" target="_blank">according to the Lexus website</a>.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"When technology, design and imagination come together, amazing things can be achieved. Presenting SLIDE," <a href="http://www.lexus-int.com/amazinginmotion/" target="_blank">Lexus said in a tweet</a> on Tuesday.&#xa0;</span></p><p>The hoverboard is the latest project in the company's<em> Amazing in Motion </em>series of videos which showcases new technologies Lexus is working on.&#xa0;</p><p>Of course, Lexus isn't the first company to tackle the hoverboard idea. Last year, the California-based company Arx Pax showed off its hoverboard model called the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/meet-hendo-a-10000-hoverboard-2014-10" target="_blank">Hendo board</a>. The company, which launched its product on Kickstarter, quickly sold out of its few flying skateboard models for the hefty price tag of $10,000 a pop.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Lexus will begin testing its device this Summer in Barcelona, according to a </span><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-24/lexus-builds-a-functional-hoverboard-prototype">Bloomberg report</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. Lexus built a real hoverboard

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Earlier this week, Lexus revealed in a video that it had created a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/lexus-hoverboard-2015-6" target="_blank">"real, rideable hoverboard" called Slide</a>. The company didn't reveal much else, only that it would be testing out the board this summer in Barcelona.&#xa0;<p>The big reveal garnered a lot of attention, but it also raised a lot of questions. Specifically, how does the device work?</p><p>While the company didn't share many details about it's flying skateboard, it did say the technology behind the board is magnetic levitation. It uses liquid-nitrogen-cooled semiconductors and magnets to move around.</p><p>But in the video the company released on Tuesday the board appears to be levitating above concrete in a skatepark, which left a lot of folks asking how exactly that works given there need to be a magnetic surface for the whole thing to work.&#xa0;</p><p>Well, thanks to some sleuthing from the spanish website <a href="http://elpatin.com/el-lexus-hoverboard-vuela-sobre-cubelles-barcelona/" target="_blank">El Patin</a>, we now are getting some answers.&#xa0;</p><p>According to El Patin, the company's test site is appears to be&#xa0;a normal-looking skatepark located in a village called Cubelles just outside of Barcelona. But the skatepark is actually far from normal.&#xa0;</p><p>The entire unfinished park is lined with a metal track. The track&#xa0;even appears to be embeded in the quarter pipe shown in one of the photos on El Patin's website. Presumably, the Lexus hoverboard can't actually float over cement, but needs to glide along the embedded track.</p><p>So don't be fooled by Lexus' teaser video you saw this week. It's likely Lexus buried a magnetic track under the pavement in order to provide the illusion the board can hover over a normal surface.</p><p>Lexus hasn't revealed exactly what else it intends to do with the park besides testing, but did say in a statement to Business Insider that the hoverboard is not a consumer product and will not go on sale.
