With this, we are also ready to launch Stand-alone technology. New Delhi: The adoption of <keyword id="20643295" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="Electric-two-wheeler" source="keywords">electric two-wheeler</keyword> vehicles in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> is on a gradual rise and it is expected that their share will rise to upwards of 13 per cent by 2026-27, investment banking company <keyword id="19905137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jefferies" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Jefferies" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Jefferies">Jefferies</keyword> asserted in a report. In the financial year that ended in March 2024, the share of electric two-wheelers was at 5 per cent. Share of EVs in two-wheeler sales rose from just 0.4 per cent in 2020-21 to 5.4 per cent by early 2023, led by rising subsidies and new launches. However, Jefferies claimed that a subsequent reduction in incentives has resulted in the share remaining in the 4-7 per cent range for most of the past 24 months, despite the introduction of lower-priced vehicles by manufacturers. "We currently assume share of E2Ws rising from 5 per cent (0.9mn units) in FY24 to 7 per cent/10 per cent/13 per cent (1.4mn/2.3mn/3.4mn units) in FY25E/FY26E/FY27E, although we now see a downside risk to these estimates in the context of the new scheme targeting just 2.5mn E2Ws over two years," Jefferies said in its report released earlier this week. <keyword id="19897349" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola-Electric" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Ola Electric" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Ola Electric">Ola Electric</keyword>, which has recently become a publicly listed company, has emerged as the dominant manufacturer in India's electric two-wheelers market, said Jefferies, noting that its market share rose from 21 per cent in 2022-23 to 35 per cent in 2023-24 and further to 49 per cent in 1Q-2024-25. However, as per the Jefferies report, Ola's market share has subsequently fallen to 31 per cent in August and just 29 per cent in September (month-to-date). Bajaj, TVS and Ather, on the other hand, have gained 5-9 percentage points each since June quarter, it said. This week, the Union Cabinet has approved a scheme for the promotion of electric mobility in the country. The scheme has an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over two years. The Cabinet's approval for the 'PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme' was based on a proposal from the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI). Among others, subsidies or demand incentives worth Rs 3,679 crore would be provided to incentivise e-2Ws, e-3Ws, e-ambulances, e-trucks and other emerging EVs. The scheme will support 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses, a release said. The Ministry of Heavy Industries is also introducing e-vouchers for EV buyers to avail of demand incentives under the scheme.

The PM E-DRIVE scheme will be implemented from tomorrow, October 1, 2024, and will be in force till March 31, 2026. The total outlay of ₹10,900 crore is spread over two years, with ₹5,047 crore allocated for FY 2024-25 and ₹5,853 crore for FY 2025-26. The scheme is aimed at accelerating the adoption of EVs in the country, with a focus on electric two-wheelers, electric three-wheelers (e-3Ws) and more. The PM E-DRIVE subsumes the ongoing EMPS-2024 scheme. A major focus of the scheme is providing demand incentives to lower the acquisition cost of EVs for consumers. For FY 2024-25, the scheme proposes a demand incentive of ₹5,000 per kWh for e-2Ws and e-3Ws, which will be reduced to ₹2,500 per kWh in FY 2025-26. A major part of the outlay, around ₹8,070 crore has been earmarked for EVs. This includes ₹4,391 crore for electric buses and ₹1,772 crore for electric two-wheelers. As part of the scheme, the central government aims to support the purchase of over 14,000 e-buses, establish 2,000 charging stations, and upgrade EV testing facilities across the country. PM E-DRIVE scheme with ₹10,900 crore outlay announced for electric vehicles

The Rs 10,900 crore scheme will support 2,479,000 electric 2-wheelers, 316,000 electric 3-wheelers and 14,028 electric buses, along with 88,500 <keyword id="186291" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ev" source="Orion">EV</keyword> charging sites. Shailesh Chandra, President of SIAM and Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd &amp; Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, expressed strong support for the government's forward-thinking initiative. Chandra said, "This forward-thinking initiative reflects the Government's unwavering support for <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword>'s transition to electric mobility, fostering innovation and investment within the sector. We believe this scheme will not only enhance the growth of the EV ecosystem but also strengthen India's leadership in the global movement towards environmental sustainability." It is expected to support the deployment of 24.79 lakh e-2Ws, 3.16 lakh e-3Ws, and 14,028 e-buses, providing a significant push to India's EV ecosystem. A critical aspect of the scheme is the introduction of e-vouchers for EV buyers. At the time of purchase, an Aadhaar-authenticated e-voucher will be generated, which will enable buyers to avail of demand incentives. Additionally, the scheme allocates Rs 500 crore for the deployment of e-ambulances, marking a new initiative to integrate electric vehicles into essential public services. Another Rs 4,391 crore has been earmarked for the procurement of 14,028 e-buses, with a demand aggregation process led by CESL in nine major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Intercity and interstate e-buses will also be supported in consultation with states. Furthermore, Rs 500 crore has been set aside to incentivize the adoption of e-trucks, a critical move given that trucks are one of the largest contributors to air pollution. The scheme encourages those with a scrapping certificate from <keyword id="19897457" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-road-transport" source="keywords">Ministry of Road Transport</keyword> and Highways-approved (MoRTH) vehicle scrapping centres to participate in this transition. With an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore, the scheme will support the installation of 22,100 fast chargers for four-wheelers, 1,800 fast chargers for e-buses, and 48,400 fast chargers for two- and three-wheelers. These chargers will be installed in cities with high EV penetration and along selected highways, making long-distance EV travel more viable.

Automobile industry hails PM e-DRIVE scheme to promote EVs

Simply defined, APIs allow software to communicate with other software, which frees up more developers to work on creating more applications faster and innovating better. Although businesses have been using APIs for a while, there’s been a shift in the way these interfaces are viewed within organizations. Today, many competitive, forward-thinking companies view APIs as software products that enable developers to open up new digital business models and prospects rather than merely as an integration tool to link programmes and data. To give us a broader perspective on this, Abhinav Asthana, CEO and Founder of Postman spoke with Felipe LaMaitre, Director of Developer Relations at AWS, as part of the SaaS Scions web series by Business Insider India to further elaborate on this. Then a Software engineer, Abhinav Asthana launched Postman in 2012 as a side project with the intention of making API testing easier. Today, Postman has more than 25 million registered users and 75,000 open APIs, making it the largest public API hub in the world. Driving factors behind Postman’s success Postman’s popularity can be attributed to the numerous small measures that the company undertook. Asthana's advice to fellow founders is to create a support network of colleagues within the workplace as well as family and friends outside of the business. This serves as the main driving force behind continued building. He reiterates that it is crucial to wait, consider, and list the pros and cons while developing, Asthana acknowledges the simplicity of creating software but advises founders to focus on product development rather than being consumed by operational aspects. “Software is much simpler to create because it doesn't require a significant initial expenditure. You only need a computer, the internet, free time, and some talent. To top it off, there are a tonne of materials online, some of which are even offered by AWS. Instead of getting so preoccupied with the operational aspects of beginning a business, such as seeking capital, setting up an office, and so forth, founders shouldn’t neglect what is most important at this time–developing the product,” he says. Balancing simplicity and complexity in software When asked how to keep things simple in a commercial world when markets and consumer needs are becoming increasingly complex, Asthana says it is "difficult to achieve." The term "software" in general is as wide as the ocean, with an equally enormous scope for improvement. One may always add new features and submit updates, but this leads to a slew of newer challenges. "Every update or upgrade is a component that must be carefully maintained, and the most difficult aspect is balancing all of the components." He notes the importance of introducing new features and simultaneously removing outdated, ineffective ones. APIs as the next big wave in SaaS APIs have been called the "next big SaaS wave." The software revolution began slowly, but in recent years it has skyrocketed, with the shift to software as a service, or SaaS, becoming the fastest-growing part of data. Asthana adds to this by saying, “Two decades ago, this industry was severely underserved on a global scale, with developers bearing the brunt of this". In actuality, however, APIs serve as the fundamental units of software, and since the early 2000s, developers have yearned for a better developer experience, including tools that make designing, documenting, and testing APIs more streamlined. As opposed to writing raw code, developers spend more time working with APIs. As a result, both tech and non-tech businesses have gone digital. Today he says, “APIs are essential abstractions in important industries including banking, healthcare, retail, and others. All of our aspirations for technology two decades ago have been surpassed by this”. However, the buck doesn’t stop here, more needs to be learned and developed, and Postman will play a crucial part in the expanding API business. Postman’s role in expanding the API business Lastly, Asthana spoke about how Postman is working on building and maturing the API market. “We currently work on two levels, informing leadership of the value of APIs for businesses. We also manage developer relations, a programme that is entirely devoted to developers and provides them with practical tools that they can apply right away in their line of work,” he said. While about 60% of total video viewing in India happens on YouTube, Netflix has 40 Mn monthly active users. Disney Plus Hotstar too has reached the critical mass with its freemium model, well-supported by relevant collaborations, such as sports (read cricket), which drives volume. Also, a KPMG study reveals that, unlike the West, only 10% of viewers access OTT platforms for watching original content. Rather, OTT is used primarily for the convenience of anytime and personal viewing of movies, music, sports or to catch-up with TV content. Driving OTT Growth in India As a country with a population of 1.23 billion, India is the next big market for OTT platforms. Some of the growth drivers for OTT players in India, based on the precedent from the West include: ● Investments in Content Video streaming services are expected to spend around ₹1,920 crore to create original content for India in 2021, driven in part by the sharp rise in audiences during the 2020 lockdown. The platforms will further increase spends, including on sports, to ₹30,000 crore, during 2021-25, according to the latest FICCI-EY media and entertainment industry report. Around 500 original titles are likely to be released in 2021 across platforms, as opposed to 385 titles in 2019 and 220 in 2020. The investment in original content makes sense given that viewers are learning to pay for the content they consume, especially original content. In 2020, 29 million subscribers paid for 53 million OTT video subscriptions (not counting subscriptions bundled along with data plans), a figure that is estimated to increase to 39 million subscribers for 71 million subscriptions in 2021. Netflix has more than 40 originals scheduled for 2021 and is expanding its slate by nearly three times compared to 2020. Amazon Prime Video has 50 local originals in various stages of development and 30 in various stages of production. Demand for original content will likely double by 2023 compared to 2019 levels. ● Content – the New Battlefield for Viewers Increasing number of consumers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities have spurred the production of regional content. Alt Balaji has seen a change after the pandemic. Before the pandemic, the top 8 cities in India contributed to 70% of their total audience; post-April 2020, 60% of the traffic is from other tier-2 and tier-3 cities. Old favourite shows are being re-aired on OTT platforms, while investments in new content production continue. Recently Amazon announced the acquisition of MGM, for $8.45 billion, giving it access to MGM’s library of 4000 film titles and 17,000 TV shows. We have witnessed the emergence of a wide variety of content including Indian content since India has a diverse market with over a dozen languages that are widely spoken across the country. OTT players are shifting their focus towards localisation of their platforms, to be able to connect with the Indian users, be it in terms of regional languages, geography and user experience etc. India already has about 40 OTT players and 10 music streaming apps in existence catering to various entertainment and media demands. This has opened the doors for OTT platforms to promote regional and hyperlocal content. In fact, a leading OTT player recently released 11 shows during the lockdown- all locally curated shows. The share of regional language consumption on OTT platforms is expected to cross 50% of total time spent by 2025, easing past Hindi at 45%. ● Government Regulations The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has, in the past year, stressed the need for some form of regulation of OTT Platforms to streamline the sector. In this regard, the MIB recently notified the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021. The new rules require OTT platforms to set up a robust three-tier grievance redressal mechanism. The first level will comprise regulation by the OTT Platform itself through a grievance officer. The second level will be an institutional self-regulatory body formed by publishers of content and their associations. This self-regulatory body will comprise industry experts headed by a retired Supreme Court/ High Court judge /eminent personality in the relevant field. At the third level is an inter-department committee constituted by the MIB that will provide oversight and hear appeals for decisions taken at level two or if a complaint is referred to the inter-department committee by MIB. Regulation might help improve the quality of content in the future. ● The Future of OTT - New Applications and Content Innovations There is no doubt that the future of <keyword id="6357922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="television" source="Orion">television</keyword> is OTT, and the industry is at a nascent stage. Content is the force that defines the direction of evolution in the industry. New applications such as learning, education and fitness are being explored. Pricewaterhouse Coopers reported that in 2018, more than 40% of new internet users in the world were children. Edtech platforms like Byjus and Unacademy use the OTT streaming approach for education. Similarly, possible applications for learning management in corporations are being explored. While fitness was never considered an activity that could be done remotely, the pandemic saw this notion change. According to a Bobble.AI report, besides video conferencing apps and websites, fitness applications such as Lose Weight, Cure.fit, recorded a 104.53% rise in daily active users. Video streaming platforms are also creating content to cater to this trend. Disney+ Hotstar has partnered with Brilliant Wellness, to introduce content from its fitness experts, yoga, and spiritual gurus. -- India’s large population and relatively young age demographics make the business environment dynamic and interesting. The government is taxing digital assets outside of the RBI’s digital rupee. Simply put, the digital rupee is basically the digital version of India’s fiat currency that’s run using a private blockchain system. Unlike other cryptocurrencies, which aspire to be decentralised — they run on public blockchains — a CBDC is a centralised digital asset since the RBI will be able to control its supply in the market. “It's phenomenal news that India launching a blockchain-powered ‘digital rupee’. This move will pave the way for crypto adoption and put India in the front seat of innovation,” said Nischal Shetty, the CEO of WazirX, in a statement. Many experts argue that CBDCs are not ‘technically’ cryptocurrencies due to their centralised nature. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana, CBDCs are designed to be trackable and do not allow any form of anonymity. India is not alone in the race to raise a CBDC India is not the first country to experiment with digital legal tender. The key advantages of these CBDCs are reduced printing costs, low settlement risks, easy to implement cost-effective global payment system and more. Moreover, with a CBDC in control of the monetary policy, banks won’t get pushed out of the system as easily. On the flip side, scalability has been an inherent project with cryptocurrencies. It will be interesting to see how the RBI plans to address that problem as it deals with a population of 1.4 billion. TCS ties up with IIT Bombay to develop India's first sensing tool for semiconductor chip imaging

I get more emails than I can handle. Every day, I watch as the unread messages in my inbox pile up despite my best efforts. It's not because I spend too much time responding to the emails that matter — I spend too much time reading the ones that don't. There are newsletters, brand-outreach spam, press releases, recruiters, social-media updates — emails that are almost never urgent but still make me feel obliged to check to make sure I'm not missing anything important. Even carefully deployed filters go only so far to keep the <a href="https://www.ftc.gov/system/files/ftc_gov/pdf/CSN%20Annual%20Data%20Book%202021%20Final%20PDF.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ever-growing volume of unwanted emails</a> at bay. <a href="https://hbr.org/2019/01/how-to-spend-way-less-time-on-email-every-day#:~:text=Reading%20and%20processing%20irrelevant%20emails,even%20bulk%2Dprocessing%20takes%20time." target="_blank" rel="noopener">One study</a> found that more than half of our emails were not important, and another study found that one-quarter of an <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/McKinsey/Industries/High%20Tech/Our%20Insights/The%20social%20economy/MGI_The_social_economy_Full_report.ashx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">average American's</a> workday was spent answering and reading emails. This cascade of digital messages is <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/tech/annals-of-technology/e-mail-is-making-us-miserable" target="_blank" rel="noopener">making us miserable</a>. The disaster that is the modern inbox is a prime area for disruption — and companies are racing to cash in using the hottest new tech: artificial intelligence. A company called Shortwave, founded by a team of ex-Googlers, has created a tool that uses AI to sum up your emails for you. It spits out a simple summary of all your important communications in an attempt to save you time. I decided to try it out to see whether AI could really solve my email problem, and to an extent, it did.The tool goes to show that while there's a long way to go, AI can help improve our online lives. By eliminating the need to manually take care of menial tasks like reading every email, AI can help us be more productive so that we can focus on more important and creative aspects of our lives and work. <h2>The AI revolution comes for email</h2>Similar to Google's now defunct Inbox product, Shortwave <a href="https://www.theverge.com/22990303/shortwave-email-google-gmail-inbox-successor-hands-on" target="_blank" rel="noopener">organizes your inbox</a> by prioritizing conversations with people and tucking away the rest into their own bundles, such as "newsletters," "travel," and "purchases." Its AI addition, which launched last week, runs on GPT-3, the language model behind the viral chatbot ChatGPT. Since the Microsoft-backed research firm OpenAI made ChatGPT public in November, over <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2023/feb/02/chatgpt-100-million-users-open-ai-fastest-growing-app" target="_blank" rel="noopener">100 million people</a> have used it to generate movie plots, write their college essays, and code computer programs from scratch. Now companies like Shortwave are building products on top of the tech.When I log into Shortwave, which costs $9 a month for the full product and offers a free limited version, there is a "summarize" button at the top of each email. When I select it, it "reads" the email's content and condenses what it's about into a few sentences to give me a TL;DR version. For example, someone sent me a report on the 10 most successful crypto countries. Instead of going through the email, which included numerous figures and tables that would have taken awhile for me to read, I asked Shortwave to summarize it. In about half a minute, the app strung together a 70-word digest of the report, pulling from its highlights. In this case, the summary gave me enough information that I decided to move on without reading the entire email. The app told me that I had saved two minutes.That may seem insignificant, but in the few weeks that I have used the tool, those minutes have added up to nearly three hours of saved time over a week — even though I sometimes used the "summarize" button just a few times a day. Shortwave's tool has especially come in handy for lengthy email chains — instead of reading each new email, I can check the AI's summary, which sums up the entire thread, to see whether any of the new emails concern me. If I want to loop in another person, there's an option for me to share the summary with them. It also works great for newsletters I want to stay on top of but don't have the time to read. Once I have an overview of what a newsletter is about, it's easier for me to decide whether I'm interested enough to go deeper.Shortwave also plans to eliminate the time we spend on emails that require only a few words, like ones confirming a meeting's schedule or acknowledging a receipt. The company let me test a feature that will be rolled out in the coming months: AI-generated responses. When someone sent me a message and asked me to let them know I got the message, I would type "confirm receipt" in the email body and click the "smart edit" button. Shortwave would then expand my message into a proper email with a greeting and a signature, with options to instantly make it sound more cheerful or formal as needed. In my experience, it's far more useful than Gmail's auto-generated responses, which are limited to a couple of words and don't offer customization. Yoon Kim, a computer-science professor at MIT, told me that for quick emails, automated tools like this would boost worker productivity. This is the main vision behind Shortwave. Jacob Wenger, Shortwave's cofounder and head of product, summed up his thinking: "You should not have to fully read and interact with every email in your inbox to get to inbox zero."<h2>'AI will free us from the mundane and repetitive tasks'</h2>Shortwave isn't alone in its mission to automate emails. Over the past year, several firms have capitalized on ChatGPT-like language models to write people's emails for them, automatically <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2023/02/14/otter-ai-launches-otterpilot-its-new-ai-meeting-assistant/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">generate meeting notes</a>, and <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2022/12/13/23505873/donotpay-negotiate-bills-ai-chatbot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">negotiate</a> their internet bills on their behalf. Microsoft is set to add a summary tool to Outlook, and Google has for years offered tools for Gmail that help you compose emails. Since 2021, the productivity startup <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2021/11/26/flowrite-seed/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Flowrite</a> has used GPT-3 to compose entire emails for you. <a href="http://hyperwriteai.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">HyperWrite</a>, an email-writing tool by the startup OthersideAI, has taken AI-generated text even further. It not only generates email text but also learns how a user writes and which kinds of topics they generally talk about so that they can spend less time editing the AI. Matt Shumer, OthersideAI's CEO and cofounder, expects personalized AI models to generate more accurate and relevant information than a generic system.Beyond email, AI's ability to consume loads of information and break it down will address some of the web's fundamental issues. Anton Borg, a computer-science researcher at the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden, told me that AI would automate routine tasks and lower the skill level required to use tools like photo-editing software. On March 1, OpenAI <a href="https://openai.com/blog/introducing-chatgpt-and-whisper-apis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a new interface that will allow businesses to add ChatGPT to their services, making it easier for more companies to utilize AI. Snap is one of its early adopters and rolled out a chatbot for Snapchat+ subscribers called "My AI," which answers questions and offers recommendations like birthday gift ideas for a friend. <h2>Limitations of AI</h2>Many people are rightly skeptical about an AI revolution, citing issues like the tendency of ChatGPT and Bing's chatbot to "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-chatbot-chatgpt-google-microsofty-lying-search-belief-2023-2">hallucinate</a>" or incorporate the biases of the text they're trained on in answers. Text generation is tricky. As soon as an AI begins to communicate under the guise of a human's name, it enters an ethical gray area, Vincent Conitzer, a computer-science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, told me.A well-written email signals many things, Conitzer said. It signals the person took the time to compose it and that they care about the topic. We might lose these important signals if AI takes over. To address this, Conitzer told me it'd be "helpful to have proof that the message was written by a human being."Like any tech, AI tools can run into bugs. On many occasions, Shortwave's summary tool refused to produce more than a sentence or two, leaving it no more useful than the subject line. A couple of times, it didn't produce a summary at all because of an "unexpected error." A more-pressing concern for me, however, is what the presence of AI in email would mean for privacy. This has been an issue with ChatGPT, since the company can use what people say to the chatbot to train AI models or put information in its future conversations, as it did when it <a href="https://twitter.com/DaveLeeFT/status/1626288109339176962" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gave away</a> a journalist's phone number. I was, therefore, worried that the AI model would leak my emails and that they would show up in someone else's ChatGPT conversation. Companies across the world, including OpenAI's largest investor, Microsoft, have <a href="http://businessinsider.com/chatgpt-microsoft-warns-employees-not-to-share-sensitive-data-openai-2023-1?ir=t">asked</a> their employees to not share any sensitive data with ChatGPT. Shortwave, though, has been trying to get in front of those issues: According to Wenger, the email text you summarize goes to OpenAI, but it's never stored. More importantly, Shortwave's "summarize" tool is optional and doesn't activate by default. Only the emails I choose to summarize are processed, which is why, even though the risk of compromising my identity is little, I never deployed it for emails that contained sensitive information. Because tech like ChatGPT collects and processes far more data than previous AI tools, Conitzer expects it to be regulated for not only privacy but also systemic biases. When someone asked ChatGPT to write code that would filter people from genders and races who would make good scientists, it set "male" and "white" as the two prerequisites. Experts have <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/02/08/technology/ai-chatbots-disinformation.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised alarm</a> over such biases and factual inaccuracies augmenting the spread of conspiracy theories and disinformation online. For AI to have more widespread use, it's important that the companies building these models are cognizant of these problems and that regulators make sure there's an independent check on these platforms.Despite these difficulties, Kim, the MIT professor, agreed that "these technologies could profoundly change our internet activities." For now, I'm looking forward to not spending hours sifting through a mountain of unwanted emails. The increasing use of AI models, such as GPT-3, is allowing the tech to make a real impact on our online world. As part of his ambition to make <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="india" source="keywords">India</keyword> a green economy, Union minister <keyword id="19897455" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nitin-gadkari" source="keywords">Nitin Gadkari</keyword> wants to slash GST on hybrid vehicles and has vowed to rid the country entirely of the over 36 crore petrol and diesel vehicles. "One hundred per cent," <keyword id="19934966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="gadkari" source="keywords">Gadkari</keyword>, the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, said when asked whether it is possible for India to get rid of petrol and diesel cars altogether. "It is difficult but not impossible. This is my vision," Gadkari said in an interview to PTI. He said India spends Rs 16 lakh crore on fuel imports. This money will be used for improving the life of farmers, villages will be prosperous and the youth will get employment, the minister said. Gadkari did not give any timeline to meet this ambitious target which even proponents of green energy believe is mind bogglingly difficult. The proposal to reduce GST on hybrid vehicles to five per cent and to 12 per cent for flex engines has been sent to the Finance ministry which is considering the requisition, Gadkari said. The minister said he firmly believes the country can end fuel import by promoting the use of biofuels. Environmental activists welcomed Gadkari's vision for increasing green mobility, but also struck a word of caution by flagging the use of fossil fuels in the production of electricity. "In India, we are still heavily dependent on a fossil fuel-based energy system to power electric cars, and this needs to be changed. There is urgent need to ensure 100 per cent renewable energy alongside electric vehicles to tackle the climate crisis," <keyword id="21152150" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="avinash-chanchal" source="keywords">Avinash Chanchal</keyword>, a campaigner for Greenpeace India, told PTI. Gadkari said he has been pitching for alternative fuels since 2004 and is confident things will change in the coming five to seven years. "I cannot give you a date and year for this transformation to take place as it is very difficult. This is difficult but not impossible," Gadkari asserted. He said he firmly believes that given the speed with which electric vehicles are being introduced, the coming era will be of alternative and biofuels and this dream will come true. Gadkari said auto companies such as Bajaj, TVS and Hero are also planning to manufacture motorcycles using flex engines and auto rickshaws using similar technology too were on the way. "I roam around in a car that runs on hydrogen. You can see electric cars in every other household. People who used to say this was impossible, have changed their views now and started believing in what I have been saying for the last 20 years," the minister said. "Tatas and <keyword id="19906966" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ashok-leyland" source="keywords">Ashok Leyland</keyword> have introduced trucks that run on hydrogen. There are trucks that run on LNG/CNG. There are 350 factories across the country of bio-CNG," he said. "Definitely, a revolution is taking place.
