How to resize images directly on Google Chrome

<p>I loved it. Until it had an epic fail.</p>
<p>For the first 13 days, I was so happy that I was ready to recommend it instead of a Mac (with some caveats). <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But last weekend, I took it Starbucks and experienced such a disaster that I changed my mind.</span></p>
<p>Before I get into the Starbucks fail, I want to talk about the 13 days where things went well. With the Chromebook operating system, all work is done via cloud apps over the Web. Instead of using applications installed on your PC, you open cloud apps in Chrome tabs or new Chrome windows. </p>
<p>You can save some files to your PC, too, though that's not the default. Mostly your files will be automatically saved in your Google Drive.</p>
<p>That was fine for my job because a<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">t Business Insider, we rely almost entirely on cloud apps. We use Gmail and Google Apps. Our main application, the "content management system" where we write stories, is accessed through a browser. Editors chat to each other through an online chat program called Campfire, or through Google Chat. I use Hootsuite for Twitter, etc. <br /></span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I opened the ChromeBook, signed into my Business Insider account and all my bookmarks to cloud apps and saved passwords were there. No downloading. No installing anything. It was great!</span></p>
<p>I had one problem: I also use my personal Gmail account for work. For instance, I use RSS reader Feedly and the only way to access it is to be signed in with my personal Gmail account. But I found a way to rig ChromeBook to <span></span><a href="https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/1721977?hl=en">sign into multiple Google accounts </a><span>at the same time. (From Gmail, click on the user account icon and then "add account"). It wasn't hard, but it wasn't intuitive. That "add account" is a little hard to find.<br /></span></p>
<p>Pixel and <keyword id="6373078" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Chrome-OS">Chrome OS</keyword> are fast and responsive, even when I have a lot of tabs open. No beach balls. No fan coming on, mysteriously heating up the device for hours at a time like my Mac loves to do. No bugging me to update my software. </p>
<p>I was a happy camper.</p>
<p>One bad thing: many Chrome add-on apps are still immature. For instance, the calculator doesn't support copy/paste. I had to manually type in numbers.</p>
<p>Also, the Mac blows the Pixel out of the water when it comes to image editing.</p>
<p>ChromeBook's default Photo viewing app is really weak. It won't even resize a photo (except to crop). I found a Chrome OS app called Pixr, which worked ok. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">But the Mac's apps, iPhoto and Preview, are far better.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Pixel Chromebook does have a beautiful touchscreen, which worked great. I didn't need an external mouse. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">For non-work things, like watching movies, it's also great, like the Mac. And because the screen has such high resolution, it took great screen shots, even when cropping and resizing photos to be bigger. </span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">So, for 13 days, I was delighted. I even wanted to buy <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">a new HP Chromebook</span> for my daughter, who is in college. <br /></span></p>
<p>Then I took the Pixel to Starbucks. And the Pixel wouldn't let me log on to the Internet.</p>
<p>This particular Pixel has 3G, but it told me that the 3G network wasn't available. That was crazy. I was right in the middle of town, across the street from the college and 3G worked on my phone.</p>
<p>At Starbucks, AT&amp;T requires you to sign an agreement before accessing the network. The AT&amp;T sign up page wouldn't load, no matter what (logging in and out, rebooting, going straight to the Starbucks AT&amp;T page ...). Since that didn't happen, I got an error message that told me I couldn't use the network:</p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Without being able to use the Internet, I couldn't access ANY apps. The file I needed was actually stored on the Pixel's hard drive, not in the cloud. But because </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">I couldn't get to the cloud app Google docs, the file wouldn't open.</span></p>

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The Pixel was a brick. I couldn't even take screen shots. (I took these fail pictures with my phone.)</span></p>
<p>This would never have happened with a Mac or a PC. Even if I couldn't access WiFi, I could open a file and work offline.</p>
<p>The upshot is, at under $300, like for an HP ChromeBook ($279, no touchscreen) a ChromeBook is fine for home, or school, where WiFi is reliable. </p>
<p>But the Pixel costs $1,300 and for $1,100 you can get a new 13-inch MacBook Air. For $1,200 a new MacBook Pro. (Not to mention a countless variety of Windows 8 machines). </p>
<p>So I don't recommend the expensive Pixel instead of a Mac. </p>
<p>That said, I'm going to miss this Pixel after I send it back. For working at home on stable WiFi, I've learned to prefer it.</p>

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="1754577" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitch">Twitch</keyword> <keyword id="11640646" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="emotes">emotes</keyword> are small emoji-like icons that you can use in any Twitch streamer's chat room.</li><li>Twitch streamers with enough viewers can upload their own custom emotes for subscribers to use.</li><li>If you download the third-party extension BetterTTV, you can access dozens of new Twitch emotes for free.</li></ul><p>To the untrained eye, reading a Twitch chat can feel like interpreting hieroglyphic code. That's because Twitch chats are packed with the <keyword id="572624" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Streaming">streaming</keyword> social media site's popular "emotes."</p><p>Fortunately, we're here to help get you up to speed on Twitch emotes: Which ones are the most popular and what they mean, where to click and what to type to send emotes in Twitch chat, and how you can create your own signature emotes.</p><h2>Twitch emotes, explained</h2><p>Twitch emotes are tiny pictures that, just like <keyword id="859539" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="emoji">emoji</keyword>, each have their own meaning and connotation. And although some have an obvious use, most of them are pretty obscure. You can send an emote on Twitch to quickly convey to a streamer and fellow chatters your emotional reaction or opinion; whatever your mood, there's probably a suitable emote.</p><p>A few dozen emotes are available to everyone on the site; these are called "global" emotes. Just click one to add it to your chat message.</p><h2><strong>A selection of the most popular Twitch emotes</strong></h2><ul><li><strong>Kappa:</strong> A classic emote, Kappa is a smirking face in grayscale that signals sarcasm.</li><li><strong>LUL:</strong> The laughing face is Twitch's take on "LOL."</li><li><strong>Jebaited:</strong> This bemused face is sent to signal that the streamer's been tricked or "baited."</li><li><strong>PogChamp:</strong> Possibly the most popular emote on the site (<a href="https://www.polygon.com/2021/2/12/22280777/twitch-pogchamp-vote-results-lizard-meme-komodohype" target="_blank" rel="noopener">and one of the most controversial</a>), you'll send this happy lizard when something awesome or exciting happens.</li></ul><div type="image" title="A selection of Twitch emotes: Kappa, LUL, Jebaited, and PogChamp." height="614" width="800" msid="84411483" hostid="261"></div><p>However, some of the most popular emotes require you use to use a browser extension called Better TwitchTV, or just BetterTTV for short.</p><h2>How to get more Twitch emotes with BetterTTV</h2><p>To use BetterTTV and get access to more Twitch emotes, you need to download the BetterTTV extension for your web browser, <a href="https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/betterttv/ajopnjidmegmdimjlfnijceegpefgped?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chrome</a>, <a href="https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/betterttv/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Firefox</a>, or <a href="https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/betterttv/icllegkipkooaicfmdfaloehobmglglb" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Edge</a>.</p><p>Once you've downloaded it:</p><p><strong>1.</strong> Head to any Twitch chat and select the "Chat Settings" gear icon in the bottom-right corner, by the stream chat window.</p><p><strong>2.</strong> Select "BetterTTV Settings" from the Chat Settings menu.</p><div type="image" title="The Twitch chat settings menu, with BetterTTV settings highlighted." height="638" width="1276" msid="84411491" hostid="261"></div><p><strong>3.</strong> In the BetterTTV settings, make sure the "BetterTTV Emote Menu," "BetterTTV Emotes," and "BetterTTV GIF Emotes," and "FrankerFaceZ Emotes" are all set to "On."</p><div type="image" title="The BetterTTV menu." height="1440" width="2880" msid="84411494" hostid="261"></div><p>You'll now be able to use new BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ "Global" emotes on every channel. Every Twitch streamer can also add up to 15 "Channel" emotes that anyone with BetterTTV can use in their chat.</p><h2>How to make your own Twitch emotes</h2><p>Along with global and BetterTTV emotes, every Twitch channel can submit their own custom emotes for subscribers to use. They're one of the unique ways that viewers can show their love for the channel.</p><p>However, to upload custom emotes, your Twitch channel needs to reach "partner" or "affiliate" status. Once there, you can take advantage of the tools provided in the Twitch Creator Dashboard to upload unique emotes.</p><ul><li>Twitch affiliates can have one emote for all subscribers, and two emotes each for $9.99 and $24.99 tier subscribers.</li><li>Twitch partners start with six emote slots, but that number can increase up to 60 as they earn more subscribers. Once you've unlocked an emote slot, you get to keep it forever, even if you lose subscribers.</li></ul><div type="image" title="A selection of example custom emotes." height="1001" width="849" msid="84411499" hostid="261"></div><p>Your emotes will have to meet a few parameters. To use <a href="https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/subscriber-emote-guide?language=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitch's auto-resize feature,</a> your file will need to be a square image between 112x112 and 4096x4096 pixels, and be a maximum of 1MB in size. Twitch emotes: Everything to know about Twitch's wildly popular take on emoji

<p>The computer will be called Sprout, and HP is reportedly planning to unveil it at an event on Oct. 29. Based on Re/code's description, it doesn't seem like the Sprout will look like an ordinary laptop or desktop computer.</p>
<p>The Sprout is said to include three primary parts: a flat touch-enabled surface, a large flat screen display similar to HP's line of Pavilion desktops, and an overhead assembly that includes a 3D scanner and projector. It doesn't sound like the Sprout has a traditional keyboard. </p>
<p>The projector would display images on the flat surface, which users would be able to interact with. Specifically, Re/code says users will be able to manipulate whatever is being shown on the touch surface with either their hands or a stylus. This includes resizing elements of the user interface and moving things around. </p>
<p>What's potentially more interesting, however, is the Sprout's 3D scanner. Once and object is scanned, users will be able to place the 3D rendering of that object in whatever he or she is working on. </p>
<p>The Sprout will run on Windows at launch, but could eventually support Google's Chrome OS, Re/code's sources said. HP is likely to market the Sprout to businesses, but it may also try to target high-end consumers that may need it for professional purposes. </p>
<p>We expect to learn more about the Sprout next week. The news also comes after <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hp-is-planning-to-split-2014-10">HP announced that it will be splitting</a> its printer and personal computer segment from its corporate hardware and services business.</p>

HP Is Going To Announce A Crazy New Computer That Can Scan Objects In 3D

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Florence Fu/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Mac OS X has been around so long that Nickelback had the number one single the year it launched.</p><p>So after over 15 years, it's time for a change.</p><p>OS X is officially dead, and has been renamed macOS. The first version of macOS, codenamed Sierra, launches this fall as a free update for most Macs. But there's a public beta version out now, and I've been testing it for the last week or so.</p><p>There are tons of changes in Sierra, and they all add up to a big, significant update for the Mac.</p><p>So what can you expect? Time to dive in.</p><h2>Siri</h2><p>Let's start with Siri, since that's the biggest and most significant new feature coming to Sierra.</p><p>This isn't the same Siri you're used to. Yes, it can tell you a joke or give you weather and sports updates. But Siri on Mac has been retooled to perform a lot of desktop-specific tasks, like searching for files or adjusting settings that tend to be buried under layers of menus.</p><p>Some examples: "Turn on Bluetooth." "How much iCloud storage do I have left?" "Show me my music files." "Show me documents I worked on yesterday." And so on.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>My favorite feature so far is email search. I spend a lot of time digging through my inbox for the last email my editor sent me or a specific attachment. It's so much easier to say, "show me emails from So-And-So" instead. It's also nice to have image, Twitter, and web search baked right in, especially when you're working in an app and need to look something up quickly. You can also drag content from the Siri window into the app you're working on. All of these are thoughtful improvements.</p><p>On the other hand, a lot of the features feel like they belong on the iPhone and were forced onto the Mac. It's a bit awkward to dictate text messages and emails on your computer, especially when you have a big ol' keyboard right in front of you. You're better off ignoring that aspect of Siri.</p><p>I only have two major issues with Siri on the Mac:</p><p>First, there's the awkwardness. As I tested Sierra over the last week, I got a lot of snickers in the office as I queried my Mac to find files or search through emails. It got really embarrassing when Siri didn't understand me one time and replied, "I'm not sure what you said there, Spider-Man." Everyone laughed. (It's a long story, but I got kind of drunk over Labor Day last year and thought it'd be funny to ask Siri to call me Spider-Man from now on. I forgot about that until this week. Now all my colleagues know I'm an even bigger dork than they thought.)</p><p>Maybe one day we'll live in a future where it's normal to talk to your computer instead of typing or clicking a mouse, but it feels out of place today.</p><p>Then there's Spotlight, which got a big update last year that lets you use natural language to search your Mac and check stuff like sports scores or weather. But a year later, Siri can do pretty much everything Spotlight can do and then some. It's strange that Apple decided to leave Spotlight on the Mac instead of adding a text field to type into in Siri. You basically have two assistants for the same thing now, and they live right next to each other in your taskbar. I can see those two features merging together one day, but it's odd that Apple would spend so much time improving Spotlight last year when it was about to add Siri to the Mac.</p><p>Overall, it's obvious that we're in the early days of Siri on the Mac. While it's wonderful for searching the web and files on your computer, it's not going to radically change the way you use macOS.</p><h2>Photos</h2><p>Photos is the next biggest update to macOS. Just like in the upcoming iOS 10, Apple built in a new artificial intelligence system that can scan the content of your photos and automatically group them into albums and slideshows. It's also really useful for search - just look up "baby" or "dog" or "house" or a person's name you've tagged and you'll get exactly that.</p><p>These improvements are very similar to Google Photos, which launched last year, except for one key difference. Instead of crunching all the data in the cloud like Google does, Apple Photos analyzes everything locally on your Mac without sharing anything with Apple. In theory, this'll keep your content much more private than it is with Google.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>I've been using Google Photos for a year now, so I'm not ready to make a call and say one service is better than the other. Since I have all my photos in Google, I've only taken a few dozen since I started testing Sierra last week. It'll take a few more months before I can tell if it's working as well as Apple says.</p><p>So far though, Photos was able to automatically make an album of my trip to San Francisco for Apple's WWDC event and show me photos of my adorable new cat Larry when I searched for "cat." While Facebook and Google spend a lot of effort scanning your photos on their own servers, it's really impressive Apple figured out how to do something similar while still keeping your photos private on your machine.</p><h2>iMessage</h2><p>No other app got more attention at last week's WWDC keynote than iMessage. It's about to get a massive overhaul, essentially turning it into Apple's own social network.</p><p>The Mac version of iMessage is also getting all those features too - from bigger emojis to rich information when you paste a link. It's a huge, significant update to Apple's most popular app. It worked well for me so far in Sierra, but it'll be even better once iOS 10 is available and more people can start using it.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Picture-in-picture video</h2><p>I didn't realize how much video I watch on my computer while doing other work. A lot of times I'll keep a video playing while I listen to the audio and work in another browser tab, which is less than ideal. But in Sierra, you can pop videos out of the browser with picture-in-picture (PiP) video.</p><p>PiP lets you float videos from the web or iTunes on top of all your other apps. You can resize and position the video anywhere on your screen. So far, ESPN and Vimeo are the only sites that support PiP, but there's nothing stopping YouTube and the rest from adding it too. (I'd be shocked if YouTube didn't have PiP ready in time for Sierra's launch this fall.)</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Screenshot/Tech Insider</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There's one major downside though. PiP only works with Safari, so you're out of luck if you use Chrome, Firefox, or something else.</p><h2>Other stuff</h2><p>There are loads of other relatively minor features coming to Sierra, and many of them won't be ready until later versions of the beta or when the iOS 10 beta is available to the public next month. But add all those iterative improvements up, and Sierra feels like a hefty update.
