Fowler on Monday published his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.websiteplanet.com/news/alltechconsultinginc-breach-report/">security report</a> indicating that Alltech left its database of job candidate information unsecured without a password. That left the personal identifying information of about 216,000 tech job candidates exposed. Because the door was essentially left unlocked, someone trying to steal identities wouldn't have needed to hack into Alltech's database — or even search that hard — to find the information, Fowler said. Alltech says on its website that "more than 1,000 companies" rely on its services to connect them with tech professionals. Business Insider hasn't been able to verify this independently. BI also contacted the company by calling its main phone number, sending direct LinkedIn messages to its executives, and emailing its main email address. When contacted through its public email and phone number, Alltech didn't respond to requests for comment from BI. Two Alltech executives, listed as the company's owner and vice president on LinkedIn, told Business Insider in direct messages they weren't aware of anyunsecured data or a breach. Fowler said the data exposed included email addresses, passport numbers, the last four digits of SSNs, and information on work visas. "The records also contained internal notes about their experience, qualifications, and type of job they are looking for," Fowler said. Business Insider has reviewed the message Fowler sent to three Alltech email addresses on September 10 disclosing the unprotected data. Fowler has previously flagged <keyword id="19906883" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="cybersecurity" source="keywords">cybersecurity</keyword> issues with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-51682280">Wi-Fi provider</a> at UK rail stations, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wired.com/story/us-school-shooter-emergency-plans-leak/">software</a> company used by more than 5,000 US school districts, and a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wired.com/story/confidant-health-therapy-records-database-exposure/">virtual medical</a> provider, among others. Justin Miller, an ex-Secret Service agent and associate professor of practice of cyber studies at the University of Tulsa, told Business Insider that leaving a database unprotected by a password or any encryption means "anybody could potentially access the database." It's unclear, though, if any other unauthorized parties accessed the Alltech data. Miller and Fowler said that the type of information left exposed by the database, including the last four digits of a Social Security number, could allow a cybercriminal to impersonate a person. "You're looking toward identify theft," Miller said. "Details like names, work history, your visa status, passport numbers, even parts of your Social Security number, allow for bad actors to piece together enough information to steal identities and create fraudulent profiles." Fowler added that incidents like Alltech's — and others he investigates — highlight how important it is for companies to protect their data. "It also serves as a wake-up call to the industry to review their data security practices and identify vulnerabilities to protect their internal systems and the personal information of the individuals they serve," Fowler said. Alltech's website says it was founded in 1998. It's unclear why Alltech collected job seekers' Social Security or passport information. Gen Z workers, in particular, have expressed a willingness to disengage from positions that do not meet their expectations. The report added that even though older generations also admit to ghosting, it is usually with feelings of regret. However, for Gen Z, it seems to be part of a larger movement that seeks greater control over their careers, aligning with the #ActYourWage mindset. Many young adults today feel empowered to prioritise their personal goals, only committing to roles they believe meet their financial and personal needs. Danny Stacy, head of talent intelligence at Indeed UK, said that a lack of transparency from employers, particularly about salary and benefits, is contributing to this rise in ghosting. He added that he thinks the policy could incentivize chipmakers like TSMC and Samsung, which is based in South Korea, to boost manufacturing in the US."The cost of manufacturing in the US for Samsung and TSMC would be lower than a 30% to 40% tariff on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/quartz-mine-computer-chips-hurricane-helene-spruce-pine-semiconductor-2024-9">wafers</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-ai-chip-production-manufacturing-nvidia-labor-china-taiwan-korea-2024-4">packaging</a>," he said, referring to key components of the chipmaking process.Jeff Ferry, chief economist at the Coalition for a Prosperous America, a nonprofit that advocates for increasing domestic manufacturing, estimated that tariffs could create roughly 100,000 jobs at US chip manufacturers and their suppliers.He said this estimate was partly based on a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semiconductors.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2021-Jobs-Report_2-pager.pdf">report</a> published in 2021 by the Semiconductor Industry Association — a trade association and lobbying group — that said a $50 billion investment would help create an estimated 10 additional chip factories in the US. It says that when the unemployment rate's three-month average moves up 0.3 percentage points from its 12-month low, it historically indicates a recession. By that standard, the rule was triggered in October of last year, according to recently published labor revisions through the third quarter of 2023, indicating job losses of 192,000."These revisions, they keep pushing us back further and further from where we thought we were," Booth told <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxhcGsfhKF0&amp;ab_channel=DanielleDiMartinoBooth" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox Business</a> late last month. And fresh data only points to a worsening labor environment, she now added. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/labor-market-april-unemployment-rate-job-growth-wages-2024-5?utm_medium=ingest&amp;utm_source=markets">April's job report</a> delivered fresh weakness to markets, with the number of nonfarm payrolls added coming in significantly below estimates. Unemployment also ticked up slightly month-to-month, rising to 3.9%. "There were 115,000 [job losses] in the month of April, which was seasonally higher than that of January and again, we're about 22,000 with just a hop skip and a jump four days into May of data, so we're definitely seeing an acceleration of job cut announcements," she said.Other analysts have also projected rising recession risk, hand-in-hand with a labor market fallout. That allows you to stay relevant.While technical skills are important, they are not enough, especially as you grow in your career. No career is built in isolation. For you to be successful, you need to be able to collaborate with others.<h2 id="da10edd0-14f2-4c3d-8a6d-0cb54629cfc2">Don't jump immediately into Big Tech</h2>If you want to grow a career in AI now, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-tech-jobs-basic-coding-programming-skills-education-needed-recruiters-2024-8">it's about how you'll be different.</a> You need to specialize in one area of AI because it's quite a wide scope with generative AI, predictive AI, and natural language. Now, if you want to be successful, you need to be more specialized.There are many different roles that you can do. You can be an engineer, you can be a researcher, you can work on product management, or you can have a role that is more consumer-facing. So I advise everyone, especially early in their career, to start being an explorer. Try different things, experiment, and discover really what excites you and interests you.I recommend not jumping immediately into Big Tech early in your career. The reason for that is because a career is very long. It's not really a sprint, it's a marathon. You might not know exactly what you like to do and you might change as you are getting older.I think that you have much more opportunity to grow and to discover when you work in a smaller company. You will be exposed to a much wider scope of work. After, if you really want to specialize in one area, a Big Tech company can help you narrow your scope and go even deeper in some areas.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The number of people working part-time but say they would rather work full-time is rising.</li><li>The labor differential between those who think jobs are plentiful versus hard to get is falling.</li></ul>Recent data shows easing inflation and a steady decline in <keyword id="20067533" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jobless-claims" source="keywords">jobless claims</keyword> in recent weeks, but the <keyword id="19986584" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="labor-market" source="keywords">labor market</keyword> and the economy aren't out of the woods, <keyword id="23071655" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BCA-Research" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="BCA Research" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="BCA Research">BCA Research</keyword> says. The firm's chief global strategist, Peter Berezin, pointed to two low-key labor market indicators flashing warning signals this month. The first, the number of people working part time but would rather be working full time, has "started rising meaningfully," Berezin said in a Monday note. The number rose to 4.83 million in August, an almost 6% increase from July and a roughly 14% increase from the year prior, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics released earlier this month. Historically, that number has always increased in the early stages of a recession, Berezin says. "Could this time be different? I am open to the idea. But I think the onus is on the soft landers to show why. So far, I have not seen any convincing evidence," he said. Meanwhile, recent survey data shows a narrowing gap in positive and negative labor market sentiment. The labor differential, which measures those who think jobs are plentiful versus those who think they are hard to get, fell 3.3 points to 12.6 in September, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.conference-board.org/topics/consumer-confidence">data</a> from the Conference Board released Tuesday. That's "well below" pre-pandemic numbers, and below the 2019 average of 33.2, Berezin said in a Tuesday note. On average, the peak in the labor differential comes nine months ahead of a recession, Berezin says. But this time around, its flashing closer to a rapid slowdown as the labor market pivots to showing weak labor demand via higher unemployment, rather than just slower wage growth and lower job openings. "I suspect that it has taken much longer this time around because until recently, the economy was operating along the steep side of the labor supply curve," Berezin said. The recent warning signs come two months after Berezin <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/stock-market-crash-prediction-2025-decline-fed-fails-avoid-recession-2024-7?_gl=1*19uo0cc*_ga*MTY3OTgyNjg0MS4xNzIxMDE2MDM2*_ga_E21CV80ZCZ*MTcyNzI2OTMwOC4xODMuMS4xNzI3MjcwMzIyLjE1LjAuMA..">cautioned investors over a coming recession</a> to hit the US economy later this year or early next year. He seems to be sticking with that prediction, despite "being told that the labor market is strong and that the recent rise in unemployment reflects positive developments – namely, that more people are joining the labor force." He says the data points to the contrary, with a slowdown in year-over-year labor force growth from 1.9% a year ago to 0.4% in August. "How is it that all these new joiners were able to easily find jobs back then but cannot do so now? The only plausible answer is that labor demand has slowed," he said. He says most of that increase in unemployment comes from people losing their jobs. The number of people who are unemployed because they lost their job has risen by 0.21 percentage points from a 12-month low. If history is any indication, that rise likely points to a recession. "There has never been a case over the past 50 years where this metric has increased by more than 0.20 percentage points without a recession occurring," he said. Correction: September 26, 2024 — This story was updated with a more-precise BLS figure for the year-over-year increase in August in the number of people who were working part time but would rather have been working full time. The increase was roughly 14%.

2 under-the-radar recession signals are flashing red this month, research firm says

<ul class="summary-list"><li>September's payrolls report exceeded expectations, but economists see weak gains for October.</li><li>Even with lower expectations, a poor print could reset the market's narrative around a soft landing.</li></ul>The narrative around ongoing labor-market strength revived with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/september-jobs-report-unemployment-rate-nonfarm-payroll-growth-federal-reserve-2024-10">September's payrolls report</a>, which topped economists' expectations by over 100,000 jobs. But that could change on Friday, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases new jobs data.Expectations for October's headline payrolls number are already relatively low at around 110,000-120,000. Economists and investors are discounting the impact that Hurricanes Milton and Helene and the ongoing strike at Boeing are likely to have on the jobs numbers.Even after accounting for these extraordinary events, however, some experts say a weak number below that consensus could counter the prevailing narrative that rapid Fed rate cuts slowed inflation without tipping the economy into recessionary territory — a so-called soft landing."If you get 50,000 or less, even with those potential disruptions, that does bring back some concerns about a slowdown," Tom Essaye, the founder of Sevens Report Research, told Business Insider. "Also, it really counters this idea that there's going to be no landing, that the economy's just not going to slow at all. So I think it would move markets."Ben McMillan, the CIO of IDX Advisors, said the same about a jobs print well-below consensus, especially given how much investor sentiment about a soft landing has shifted to the upside in the last month."This could be a situation where many investors say to themselves, 'Alright, maybe the economy is not as robust as we thought,' things could be more prone to slowing down, and therefore investors revise their risk-on outlook appropriately," McMillan told Business Insider.Goldman Sachs estimates that the hurricanes will lower the number of jobs added by 40,000-50,000, meaning a potential jobs print of 200,000 would, in theory, be reduced to 150,000-160,000. Pantheon Macroeconomics says the impact is likely to be closer to 25,000 jobs. For the strikes at Boeing and other firms, the Bureau of Labor Statistics itself estimates that they'll <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bls.gov/ces/publications/strike-report.htm">reduce job gains by 44,000</a>.But while various surveys of economists show muted expectations for October, some warn there's a chance that job gains could be lower than the 110,000-120,000 consensus. Goldman is just under that with a 95,000 prediction, while Comerica is much lower at 30,000. Former Fed economist Claudia Sahm thinks the print could even be negative.A print of under 100,000 would be the first since 2020.The hurricanes and strikes, however, make it unclear where the threshold of worry is for investors in a significant miss to the downside. Michael Cuggino, the president and portfolio manager of the Permanent Portfolio Family of Funds, told Business Insider on Monday that investors might be quick to disregard a poor number due to the temporary factors listed above. Plus, they may even cheer on the chance of larger rate cuts from the Federal Reserve, he said.Bill Adams, the chief economist at Comerica, said in a note this week that while his expectations are very low, investors shouldn't jump to conclusions."The October jobs report will likely show a severe but short-lived hit from hurricanes Helene and Milton," Adams said. "The report will tell us little about the economy's trend."The headline number for October isn't the only part of the report that could reset expectations, however. According to Renaissance Macro Research Chief Economist Neil Dutta, there is some evidence that September's 254,000 jobs added could be creating a false sense of confidence in the strength of the economy.For one, response rates to the BLS payrolls survey have been extraordinarily low this year, meaning revisions in subsequent months have been larger, he said.<div type="image" title="bls jobs report response rate" height="781" width="1067" msid="114788147" hostid="261" sizebytes="27070"></div>And while there's no guaranteeing what will happen with September's data, 75% of revisions over the last 12 months have been negative, according to economist David Rosenberg. Rosenberg said in an October 9 note that ADP's payrolls report is a more reliable survey to follow, and the firm's estimate of jobs added in September was 143,000.Another sign that September's jobs numbers may have been overstated is that other employment indicators haven't started to trend upwards.<div type="image" title="pmi employment indicators" height="791" width="1075" msid="114788152" hostid="261" sizebytes="29558"></div>"There's really not much evidence that the labor market's meaningfully inflected higher in September," Dutta said in an October 28 video. "If you look at the PMI data, the employment components in both the manufacturing and [services] PMIs remain below 50."

On the other hand, a CNN report in June this year talked about how over 61 percent of large US companies are mulling over the idea of using AI to take care of tasks that were earlier being done by humans. So, if AI will be replacing humans at their jobs is something that only time will tell. However, if that does happen, here are some jobs that are at risk of being replaced by the new technology. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="110538675" title="Humans who effectively use AI—and not AI itself—will take over jobs, even in entertainment industry: Netflix co-CEO" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> <h2>1. In June this year, Google had published a blog post that talked about how AI tools could help users plan their trips. In future, tools like these could be commonplace and that could impact travel advisors' jobs. As AI continues to evolve, its impact on the job market will likely vary across different sectors. While some roles may be at risk, others could be enhanced by AI, allowing humans to focus on more creative and complex tasks. AI taking human jobs debate continues, what jobs it could replace first

"This is an empowerment play. "Our robot is meant to complement people and let workers be more productive by taking on dangerous, repetitive tasks so people can focus on the more interesting, creative aspects."Nicholas, who spent his early career stocking shelves and pricing items as a teenager in the UK, said he's done enough of these jobs to see automation as an improvement."When you're doing those hourly jobs, you don't want to do the mundane things that you know a computer can do," he said.A recent Amazon-sponsored MIT <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://ipc.mit.edu/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Automation_from_the_Worker_s_Perspective-30-Sep-pub.pdf">survey</a> of 9,000 workers in a variety of jobs indicated that employees feel more optimistic about technologies that help perform more routine tasks and let humans focus on more creative ones.In general, many jobs involve some mix of routine and non-routine work that must be done, and this is especially true in warehouse retail. For example, at Sam's Club, it used to be the responsibility of a worker to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sams-club-worker-ai-replaced-tiresome-daily-task-2024-6">walk every single aisle of the cavernous store</a> with a clipboard to make note of inventory levels for restocking ahead of the next morning's opening. When you come back home after a long day of dealing with a demanding boss and/or an annoying colleague, the last thing we are going to want to do is exercise. However, getting our behinds off the couch and dragging ourselves to the gym — or the park — might actually help us feel better. In today’s fast-paced, high-pressure <keyword id="19954079" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="work-environment" source="keywords">work environment</keyword>, <keyword id="19901233" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="burnout" source="keywords">burnout</keyword> is becoming a common issue. Deadlines, long hours and constant multitasking can leave us feeling emotionally exhausted and mentally drained. But there’s good news — according to research published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, <keyword id="23298308" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="moderate-exercise" source="keywords">moderate exercise</keyword> might be the key to combating job burnout. The study examined over 500 employees, assessing their <keyword id="23410261" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="exercise-habits" source="keywords">exercise habits</keyword> and how these related to their work satisfaction and emotional well-being. The results were clear: those who engaged in moderate <keyword id="20053428" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="physical-activity" source="keywords">physical activity</keyword> experienced significantly less burnout and <keyword id="22955163" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="emotional-exhaustion" source="keywords">emotional exhaustion</keyword>. As per Michele Wolf Marenus, PhD, a research scientist at Personify Health and one of the study's authors, it’s not about pushing yourself to the extreme. Instead, it involves activities like strength training, dancing, or hiking for at least 30 minutes on five or more days a week. A combination of vigorous activities, like running, and moderate ones is also effective. Interestingly, the study found that more intense forms of exercise didn’t necessarily lead to better results. In fact, moderate activity proved to be the sweet spot. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Bankrate found the "most valuable" majors among 152 fields of study.</li><li>Valuable majors were based on unemployment, salary, and people with advanced degrees.</li></ul>A new analysis of 152 majors found <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-paying-college-majors-six-figures-salary-engineering-college-graduates-2024-4">engineering degrees</a> are valuable financially and in the labor market.Bankrate analyzed 2022 American Community Survey data to determine the "most valuable college majors." Unemployment, median annual income, and the share of people with advanced degrees were the metrics used to create the ranking."In our ranking, majors are considered valuable if they lead to higher <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/high-paying-college-majors-six-figure-salary-tuition-engineering-jobs-2024-3">salaries</a>, lower unemployment rates, and require the least amount of education because we were really just focused on bachelor's degrees," Alex Gailey, a Bankrate analyst, told Business Insider.Still, Gailey said not everyone cares about their salary, and instead, people may put more emphasis on other career aspects, such as pursuing a certain field where they think they can make a difference.Below are the majors that made the top 10 in Bankrate's ranking:The top nine most valuable majors had median salaries of at least $100,000. Actuarial science at No. 10 didn't fall too behind in its median salary, at $95,000. Petroleum engineering had the lowest unemployment rate among the top majors and one of the lowest overall. Materials science, at No. 5, had the highest share of people with advanced degrees among the majors at the top of the ranking.The major that ranked the lowest overall was studio arts. This had a median salary of $40,000 and an unemployment rate of 4.6%. While studio arts and other types of art degrees ranked toward the bottom, Gailey said that doesn't mean these degrees aren't worth it, but they do tend to have higher unemployment and lower median pay than others.Gailey said obtaining an engineering degree "at an affordable public college is likely to guarantee a fairly solid investment" because of the job opportunities available right after graduation."Whereas attending a private college with high tuition costs for, let's say, a fine arts degree may be riskier," Gailey said. "It doesn't mean it's not going to pay off in the long run, but it could be riskier because part of the equation is what costs you're incurring on the front end and how the outputs exceed essentially what you're paying."Despite how financially valuable some degrees could be, not everyone feels college is necessary to get a job. Gailey said younger people are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/student-loans/is-college-worth-it">questioning getting a bachelor's degree</a>. Gailey pointed to survey results of US adults from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2024/05/23/is-college-worth-it-2/">Pew Research Center</a> that highlight how people feel about the need for college."Roughly half (49%) say it's less important to have a four-year college degree today in order to get a well-paying job than it was 20 years ago," Pew Research Center said.Gailey said while college is an investment, getting a bachelor's degree can generally pay off, especially in terms of long-term earnings, and "there are ways to lower those upfront costs of college." That can include attending community college and then transferring credits to a four-year school.Gailey pointed to an analysis from the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/research/college-labor-market#--:explore:wages">Federal Reserve Bank of New York</a> of full-time workers and their pay that showed recent grads with a bachelor's who are between 22 and 27 years old had a median annual wage of $60,000 in 2023.
