Experts believe that, since the strategy is similar to the one adopted before the launch of Reliance Jio, Ambani’s arrival in the e-commerce space will be equally aggressive. But, then again, so was Amazon when it initially launched in India. The American e-commerce giant has been able to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2018/05/18/report-amazon-india-worth-16b-with-30-market-share-will-hit-70b-gmv-in-2027/#699b8a36b952">capture</a> one-third of the market in its five years in India. Ambani’s plan also factors in the rural users — one segment of the population that Amazon and Flipkart have been having a hard time bringing online to shop. Jio Point Stores are being put up in over 5,000 towns to bring in last mile connectivity for shoppers who live in rural areas. Not only will that increase connectivity but allow Reliance to cater to new customers that are first-time users or don’t have an internet connection at all. Reliance Retail has already been testing the e-commerce portal in Gujarat where it already has an offline network of 1.2 million local shopkeepers. Jio claims to be generating nearly 4 to 5 petabytes of data every day from its user base of over <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambanis-reliance-jio-beats-airtel-to-be-indias-second-biggest-telecom-network/articleshow/70291841.cms">300 million subscribers</a>. That's enough to fill up more than 22 million CD ROMs. Back in 2014, this is was the same amount of data that <a href="https://research.fb.com/blog/2014/10/facebook-s-top-open-data-problems/">Facebook</a> was also processing on a daily basis. It may seem like a lot but it's only a fraction of what a company like Google processes per day at <a href="https://solink.com/resources/4-comparisons-prove-video-biggest-big-data">20 petabytes</a>. Jio hopes that by using AI it will be able to have a more real-time picture of its user's experiences and gain key marketing insights to beat out the competition — Vodafone Idea and Airtel. "If this data can be properly analyzed in real-time using big data analytics and predictive analytics techniques, we can both improve the health of our network through intelligent automation and offer multiple, customized personal services to our customers," stated Anish Shah, President of IT at Reliance Jio. "They're not just fishing for us, they're giving us the ability to fish," clarifies Kiran Thomas, the President of Reliance Industries. Data set to grow As of now, the data flowing to Jio from Indian users is more-or-less restricted to its telecom network. But at the 42nd <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/highlights-of-mukesh-ambani-speech-at-reliance-industries-agm/articleshow/70638299.cms">Annual General Meeting</a> of Reliance Industries (RIL), Ambani announced a host of new features like Jio GigaFiber, a new IoT platform, and a set top box among others. The one key difference Stadia doesn’t need an additional computer hardware to work but Jio Console users are going to need the company’s set top box that comes with an integrated graphics card. Stadia just needs any device to have internet and be compatible with Chrome in order to function. This could have worked in Google’s favour but then again, it’s a not a pocket pinching compromise. Jio’s <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/details-of-jio-fibre-new-tariff-plan/articleshow/70639942.cms">GigaFiber plans</a> — which come coupled with the set top box — start at a mere ₹700 per month with a minimum speed of 100Mbps up for grabs. Claims of zero-latency Both, Google Stadio and Jio Console claim to provide an experience with zero latency — no delays. For serious gamers, this is probably the most enticing part of the formula. Zero latency means no lags between frames, better reaction times, and a higher chance of success against players who are stuck on a network with high latency. It may not seem like much but for racing and shooter games, where timing is key, but it can make the difference between winning or losing at a crucial moment. Despite the claims by both companies, they are yet to prove 100% seamless gameplay with accurate tests. Filling in the blanks There isn’t too much that has been disclosed by either company when it comes to their gaming platforms. They both claim that any controller can be used with their respective platforms. Nonetheless, Google still plans on launching its own controller, which will come equipped with the Google Assistant and claims to reduce latency even further. Both platforms are also claiming that they will be able to stream content in 4K quality, with Google planning to upgrade to an 8K resolution in the future. But, Stadia’s main impetus lies in the fact that users won’t have to download any content in order to play a game. Jio, on the other hand, has made no declarations of the kind. Not yet, anyway. Experts also believe that Jio may benefit from a ban in India. “Sub ₹12,000 category will see very careful participation from Chinese players unless there is clarity. Amid reports of ban on Chinese budget smartphones, Mukesh Ambani reveals Reliance Jio and Google are working on an affordable 5G smartphone

The country also increased two spots in rank globally for overall median fixed broadband speeds, from 81st in December to 79th in January, according to network intelligence and connectivity insights provider <keyword id="2431974" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ookla" source="Orion">Ookla</keyword>. Overall fixed median download speeds in India saw a slight increase from 49.14 Mbps in December to 50.02 Mbps in January. In November, India ranked at 105th position, globally in median mobile speeds. Ookla also recorded 29.85 Mbps median mobile download speeds in January this year which is better than 25.29 Mbps in December 2022. The UAE leads the chart for overall global median mobile speeds, whereas Papua New Guinea increased 24 spots in rank globally. For fixed broadband download speeds, Singapore is consistent at the top spot while Cyprus increased 20 spots in rank globally. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio's True 5G services have gone live in more than 236 cities, becoming the first and only telecom operator to reach such a wide network in a short span of time. As 5G rolls out, India jumps 10 spots in median mobile speeds globally: Ookla

"Airtel won our video experience award once again, as our users on its network continue to enjoy the best video experience nationally. With mobile video consumption rising, video experience is increasingly becoming an important aspect of users' mobile network experience and at present Airtel holds an advantage," said the report titled 'India Mobile Network Experience Report April 2020'. It also led in download speed with an average speed of 10.1 Mbps. The report noted that Jio remains superior in 4G availability and won in terms of 4G coverage experience. "Jio continues to increase its already spectacular 4G availability score. The operator's score has grown by less than half a percentage point, to reach a remarkable 98.2 per cent since our last report." In terms of upload speed <keyword id="15492" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> led among the other players with a score of 3.9 Mbps. Vodafone and <keyword id="41511" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="idea">Idea</keyword> had an edge over their rivals in the average upload speed of their users. Opensignal said that for this report, it treated Vodafone and Idea as individual operators, as they are still operating as separate consumer brands. Jio might not look and sound as desperate as their competitors due to a recent<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/mukesh-ambanis-reliance-jio-raises-25215-crore-for-its-invits-from-canadian-fund-brookfield/articleshow/70295640.cms"> equity infusion</a> from a Canadian investor – but they too need tariff hikes. “Jio would have to increase tariffs as there is no way that they can carry on at the rate that they are going. It is just a matter of time,” Alok Shende, telecom expert and managing director at Ascentius Insights told Business Insider India, before the SC order. However, Jio might have another hurdle as it has set new subscriber addition targets of attaining 500 million subscribers, as announced. And it still has a few million more to add as its subscriber base is currently at 348 million. “RJIO’s pricing hinges on its aspiration of 500 million subscriber base and parent Reliance Industries’ aspiration of paring net debt to zero. Hence, considering higher subscriber acquisition target, we argue the company may delay tariff hike by a few quarters. That said, given the company’s ballooning debt and its commitment to reduce debt, tariff hikes look certain,” said a CLSA report in October. <ul><li>Mukesh Ambani announced that he plans to connect 1 billion devices using Jio’s IoT network that’s going to launch on 1 January, 2020.</li><li>For Reliance Jio, it will bring ₹20,000 crore revenue stream.</li><li>But the bulk of IoT will be driven by industrial applications rather than consumer devices like smart bulbs or air conditioners. </li></ul>Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, estimates that India will have at least 2 billion connected devices over the next two years. And, the company’s telecom arm — Reliance Jio — plans to power at least half of them to hone in on the ₹20,000 crore revenue opportunity. Jio’s IoT network will be a Narrowband Internet of Things (NBIoT) based on the company’s 4G network. The aim is to ensure that data gets from point A to point B in the most reliable way at the lowest possible cost once it launched on 1 January, 2020. Ambani cited the example of India’s 300 million electricity meters that needs to be connected digitally for real-time monitoring. “Having up to date data by the minute can help consumers have full visibility and control over the cost and quality,” according to Ambani during the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/highlights-of-mukesh-ambani-speech-at-reliance-industries-agm/articleshow/70638299.cms">Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting.</a> Just as Jio will be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/reliance-jio-fired-up-as-mukesh-ambani-joins-hands-with-satya-nadellas-microsoft-to-challenge-jeff-bezos-in-india/articleshow/70641754.cms">threatening Jeff Bezos’ Amazon Web Services (AWS)</a> as it partners with Microsoft to bring cloud computing to small and medium businesses, it will also challenging Amazon when it comes to IoT. It’s not about your light bulb at home IoT is not all about smart bulbs or air conditioners. In reality, a lot of the communication that happens over IoT is between machines. In fact, 50% of IoT spending will be driven by enterprise capabilities like manufacturing, transportation, logistics and utilities rather than consumer facing applications, according to <a href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/in/Documents/manufacturing/in-mfg-harnessing-the-power-noexp.pdf">Deloitte</a>. The reason these sectors will primarily push growth is because of their direct association with smart city projects and the Indian governments $1 billion investment to set up a 100 smart cities in the country, according to the World Bank. In a smart city, typical IoT applications would help manage energy usage, monitor traffic, deliver better public services and even lower the level of pollution. From the current 60 million IoT devices currently functioning in the country, Deloitte estimates that 32 times more devices — 1.9 billion — will be online by 2020. As a result, the market will also expand from $1.3 billion to $9 billion. According to an IDC report, half of the businesses in India see IoT as a requirement for staying digitally fit and 60% believe it's essential to keeping a competitive advantage. While the potential of IoT is huge — it’s not without its challenges. The transfer of data over connected devices brings with concerns of reliability and privacy. To help with this, the Open Connectivity Foundation recently opening a local chapter in India to help create awareness about global IoT standards. But, it dipped back to its opening price of ₹1436.25 by end of the day. All telecom operators are now bound to pay a levy to the government⁠— including for past revenue⁠— on not just the money earned from core telecom services but also on dividends, handset sales, rent and profit from the sale of scrap in addition to revenue from services. Airtel will have to pay ₹21,682.13 crore and Vodafone will have to cough up ₹19,823.71 crore to the Indian government, according to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Given the huge financial impact on Vodafone and Airtel, they will be considerably weakened to complete against Mukesh Ambani’s Jio and its deep pockets. Both Airtel and Vodafone have huge debts and are bleeding cash in trying to retain customers from moving on to Jio. Reliance Jio also has high debt but its parent company, Reliance Industries, underwent one of the largest capital expenditure exercise by an Indian corporate. Of the $93 billion invested in different verticals, nearly half was invested in Jio. It’s network is already 5G-ready whereas Airtel and Vodafone still have a ways to go to upgrade their infrastructure. The budget set aside for making the network better and buying the 5G spectrum will now go into clearing the government dues . Meanwhile Jio can aggressively move towards acquiring more customers from these two peers.
