It didn't last long.</p><p>Inflation has persisted even as many commodity prices have dropped sharply. Tensions with China have intensified after the US shot down a spy balloon from the country. Add in the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/a-banking-crisis-is-unfolding-worldwide-how-bad-is-it-2023-3">recent turmoil in the banking sector</a>, and conditions have taken a serious turn for the worse.</p><p>The Federal Reserve last week responded by <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fed-raised-interest-rates-again-amid-calls-to-pause-svb-2023-3">raising rates by 25 basis points</a>, fewer than the 50 that had been expected just a few weeks ago, but still a hike. Financial conditions are likely to get tighter still as a result of the stress facing small and midsize lenders, which play a significant role in US bank lending. Tougher lending standards could have the impact of one or multiple rate hikes, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-is-svb-impacting-interest-rates-federal-reserve-inflation-fight-2023-3">Fed Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said</a> in a post-decision presser. <a href="https://www.gspublishing.com/content/research/en/reports/2023/03/23/389221fb-4258-4232-b50e-c61a89d54b14.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Goldman Sachs agrees</a>, quantifying the effect as 25 to 50 basis points of rate increases.</p><p>That has big name investors and market signals predicting a recession, and soon. Bill Gross and Jeff Gundlach, both considered "bond kings" thanks to their investing prowess, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/bond-king-gross-gundlach-recession-outlook-economy-fed-rate-hikes-2023-3">sounded the alarm</a>. <br />The authorities are taking extra caution to avoid any unforeseen incidents that can happen in the metro network which connects Delhi, <keyword id="18858" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Noida">Noida</keyword>, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Faridabad. They placed CISF troops, counter-terror reaction teams to ensure quick reactions to emergencies, <a href="https://twitter.com/OfficialDMRC/status/1158273456938672129">reported Live Mint. </a><br /><br />India's Home Minister Amit Shah declared in Parliament that Article 35A and Article 370 of the Indian Constitution that give special status given to Kashmir -- and rights to make its own laws-- will be struck down. <br /><br />"The entire constitution will be applicable to Jammu and Kashmir state,” Shah said. <ul><li>Six Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists entered the state via Sri Lanka</li><li>Chennai Police Commissioner confirmed that an intelligence alert has been received. </li><li>A red alert has been sounded in Coimbatore where the police suspect the terrorists might be holed up.</li></ul>Security has been tightened in Tamil Nadu following an intelligence alert that six Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists have entered the state through Sri Lanka, the police said on Friday.<br /><br />The group comprises one Pakistani national and five from Sri Lanka, the police said. <br /><br />Speaking to mediapersons, Chennai Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan confirmed that an intelligence alert has been received that six Lashkar terrorists have entered Tamil Nadu, adding that storming operations may be carried out to nab the infiltrators.<br /><br />The police are taking all steps to prevent any untoward incident, he said.<br /><br />A red alert has been sounded in Coimbatore where the police suspect the terrorists might be holed up. The police are scanning the Coimbatore railway station with the help of sniffer dogs and also checking all departing trains.<br /><br />The police have appealed to the public to inform them about movements of suspicious persons.<br />

Tamil Nadu on high alert after intelligence reports of terrorist infiltration

<br /> <keyword id="1333" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Beijing">Beijing</keyword>, <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="80" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>'s capital today issued the first-ever red alert of the year for heavy <keyword id="55910" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Air-Pollution">air pollution</keyword> as the city of over 22 million people was enveloped by thick <keyword id="68139" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Smog">smog</keyword> stated to be the worst in recent months. <br />

According to reports by state-run Zinhua news agency, Beijing has upgraded its alert for air pollution from orange to red, the most serious level today,<br />

This is the first time the capital has issued the red alert, which will last from 7:00 AM Tuesday to 12:00 PM Thursday. <br />

The notice, issued after days of heavy smog last week, also places traffic restrictions on certain types of vehicles in the city of 22.5 million people. <br />

The air quality alert of the US Embassy in Beijing showed very unhealthy reading of PMI above 256 which could cause significant health problems for heart and lung diseases and significant increase in respiratory effects among general population. <br />
<br />
Yesterday China's weather observatory issued a yellow alert for smog that will cover the country's northern regions and asked schools to keep the children not let them outdoors to avoid exposure to heavy smog. <br />
<br />
Beijing, Tianjin, parts of the neighbouring provinces of Hebei, Henan and Shandong, as well as parts of eastern Jiangsu province will be shrouded in moderate smog and the southern part of Beijing will be choked by heavy smog, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said. <br />
<br />
The smog will be dispersed by a cold front next Thursday, the NMC said. <br />

Beijing issues first-ever red alert on air pollution

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/Explosion-proof-light-SEGS23C2K-warning-light-02-big.jpg">Wikimedia Commons</a></span></p><p class="caption">CONDITION RED ALERT</p></div><p></p></div></div>Albert Edwards thinks that the US economy is about to hit the rocks - hard.</p><p>This may not be surprising for anyone who follows Societe Generale's admitted perma-bear, but according to Edwards' latest weekly commentary the signals for a recession are mounting.</p><p>Edwards said that in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/albert-edwards-on-the-market-feral-hogs-2013-6">his Ice Age thesis</a>, the idea that we're in the midst of a multi-decade downturn for stocks and financial assets, spotting recessions is the biggest key to surviving the cold.</p><p>"The key to the Ice Age thesis is to sound CONDITION RED ALERT as each recession approaches, because the equity outcome then always proves much worse than anyone expects due to the additional phase of secular de-rating," the strategist wrote in a note to clients Friday.</p><p>Based on Edwards' reading of the latest data out of the US, it appears that it is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/albert-edwards-if-im-right-the-us-stock-market-will-fall-75-2016-1">time to sound the alarm</a>. Here's Edwards (emphasis added):</p><p style="padding-left: 60px;">In the aftermath of the latest, weaker than expected, nonfarm payroll data, economists are certainly more worried. The excellent folks at Advisor Perspectives highlight the Fed?s Labour Market Conditions Index as suggesting <strong>a recession is imminent</strong> (the cumulative peak is an average of 9 months ahead of the start of recession and we are now four months beyond a peak. For investors who think copper still has some predictive power, its recent move is disturbing.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Societe Generale/Advisor Perspectives" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/575aa73552bcd01a008c81ff-960/screen shot 2016-06-10 at 7.40.10 am.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Societe Generale/Advisor Perspectives</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>This of course, is just another recession in Edwards' Ice Age thesis, which posits that during long-term equity downturns, it takes at least 4 recessions to work through. So far according to Edwards, we have only had two since the top of the bubble in 2000, thus we still have a way to go until the pain is over.</p><p>"The secular bear market only ends when cyclically-adjusted valuation measures reach rock bottom (such as the Shiller PE on the bottom line)," said Edwards.</p><p>"Each successive recession (red part of real S&amp;P top line) sees huge downturns, usually to new lower lows of both prices and valuations. That is why we reiterated our view early this year that in the coming recession the S&amp;P will bottom at 550, a 75% decline from current levels."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="Societe Generale" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/575aa9bf52bcd026008c8406-960/screen shot 2016-06-10 at 7.50.51 am.png"><span class="sprites click-to-enlarge-icon" title="Click to enlarge"></span></a><p class="source"><span>Societe Generale</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Of course there are always arguments in the other direction. Despite the weak jobs report that Edwards mentioned, both <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jolts-report-april-2016-2016-6">job openings</a> and <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/initial-jobless-claims-june-9-2016-6">weekly jobless claims</a> numbers came in strong for the labor market. Copper, it could be argued, is also facing sector-specific trends as opposed to macro fears.</p><p>In spite of this, Edwards maintains that he is bearish for a reason, despite it being a difficult spot.</p><p>"We remain at the bearish extreme of the market," he wrote.</p><p>"It is not a pleasant place. It is cold, dark and damp. People either don?t speak to you or send you abusive e-mails. Members of your own family pretend not to know you. ALBERT EDWARDS: 'CONDITION RED ALERT' a recession is imminent

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Beijing has just issued its first-ever red alert for heavy smog - the highest-level emergency response the city can issue to signal a threat to public health.<p>Around 6:30pm local time on Monday, the Chinese capital's state news agency, Xinhua, <a href="https://twitter.com/XHNews/status/673809919221477376">informed its citizens</a> that half the city's drivers would be banned from the roadways and that school would be suspended until further notice.</p><p>It is the first code red Beijing has issued since the color-coded pollution response system began in 2013.</p><p>Pollution levels in China's major cities have been a mounting problem over the last decade, as the country's rapidly growing manufacturing industry races ahead of the government's ability to control emissions, particularly from coal burning.</p><p>The result is a constant and <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/beijing-china-smog-pollution-photos-climate-health-global-warming-2015-11">ever-expanding cloud of gray</a> that engulfs China's urban areas.</p><p>Emergency red alerts are meant to be issued at least 24 hours before the onset of dangerous smog, based on wind and weather forecasts, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/08/world/asia/beijing-pollution-red-alert.html?_r=0">the New York Times reports</a>.</p><p>Smog is considered dangerous depending on its reading in the air quality index. A score above 200 is considered "unhealthy," while a score between 301 and 500 is "hazardous."</p><p>On Monday, Beijing's municipal reading was 253.</p><p>Here is Xinhua's announcement, with an accompanying photo of the Bird's Nest, Beijing's iconic stadium used during the 2008 Olympics.</p><p><div></div></p><p>The emergency initially began as an orange alert issued on Saturday, the Times reports.
