Stocks of the Mahindra &amp; Mahindra (M&amp;M) group have been under selling pressure and were the top Sensex losers on Thursday. M&amp;M slumped 6.5 per cent after the company announced equity stake buy in RBL Bank. On Wednesday, it made an announcement of acquiring a 3.53 per cent stake in RBL Bank as an investment at a cost of Rs 417 crore. “We may consider further investment subject to pricing, regulatory approvals and required procedures. However, in no circumstance will it exceed 9.9 per cent”, M&amp;M said in a filing. In a communication, RBL Bank said that the holding of M&amp;M Limited as per the last beneficiary position as on July 21 as received from the depository (NSDL) is 3.53 per cent of the total paid up share capital of the bank. “We being a listed company, for trading in the shares of the Bank there is no pre-approval required from the bank except for the fact that as per the Master Direction -- <keyword id="6354335" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india" source="Orion">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> (Acquisition and Holding of Shares or Voting Rights in Banking Companies) Directions, 2023, any shareholder who wishes to acquire 5 per cent or more of the shareholding of the bank is required to make an application to Reserve Bank of India to seek their prior approval for such acquisition. No such application has been received by us till date,” the bank said. <keyword id="43217" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tech-mahindra" source="Orion">Tech Mahindra</keyword> was down more than 3 per cent after the IT major’s poor show in Q1 results. Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in a report that Tech Mahindra delivered a weak 1QFY24 performance, with revenue declining 4.2 per cent QoQ in CC to $1.6 billion, missing our estimate of a 2.5 per cent decline. "Due to the sharp dip in revenue, Tech Mahindra also saw a steep fall in profitability, exacerbated by a 200bp one-time impact from bankruptcy of a client. We expect the company’s profitability to improve from 2Q onward, partially through sharp cost control and headcount cuts despite high utilisation," the report said. "While we expect a potential for performance improvement after the leadership refresh in Jun’23, we believe this will take time given the macro headwinds and limited flexibility to invest in growth because of weak current profitability. We remain on the sidelines as we feel the current valuation fairly factors in the uncertainties around growth and margin. We cut our FY24/FY25 EPS estimates by 8-10 per cent on weak margin and muted outlook." Emkay Global Financial Services said Tech Mahindra’s revenue slumped 4 per cent QoQ (4.2 per cent CC) to $1.6 billion, missing our estimates. EBITM declined by 440bps QoQ to 6.8 per cent, well below our estimate even after adjusting for one-offs. Deal wins remain weak, and stand at $359 million (TTM deal-intake down 25 per cent YoY). Tech Mahindra has failed to capitalise on its strength in the areas of communications, ER&amp;D, BPO, XDS, etc, and deliver consistent performance in the past, the note said.

Its liquidity coverage ratio stood at 155%, as against the 100% mandated by RBI. This means that in the short-term, the bank has enough cash to meet its obligations. RBL Bank’s credit card business – which constitutes 22% of the company’s total loan portfolio – has been a fast growing segment for the company. The news may move other Future Group subsidiaries — Future Retail, Future Lifestyle Fashions and Future Consumer— shares as well. The reports suggest that HCL America is due to respond to the lawsuit filed by a<a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/hcls-us-arm-faces-patent-infringement-claim-related-to-one-of-its-software-products/articleshow/77837559.cms"> Texas-based company, Coretek Licensing, by September 28.</a> The shares of HCL Technologies ended nearly a percent lower on Friday. ITC FMCG major ITC on Friday informed stock-exchanges that it is considering merging three of its wholly-owned subsidiaries —- Sunrise Foods, Hobbits International Foods and Sunrise Sheetgrah — with the parent company. The company said its board would meet on September 4 to consider the proposal. The shares of ITC ended nearly a percent higher on Friday. Indiabulls Ventures Indiabulls Ventures on Friday told stock-exchanges that it would raise nearly ₹588 crore via share sale to a clutch of investors. In the filing, the company said it would issue 33.6 million shares, representing about 5.5% shareholding, to six investors. The shares of Indiabulls Ventures ended nearly 8% higher on Friday. RBL Bank RBL Bank in a BSE filing told investors that the Bank MD and CEO Vishwavir Ahuja sold nearly 18,92,900 shares on August 27-28 for ₹38.52 crore. The Bank said Ahuja sold his shares to service personal debt obligation and to meet some family commitments. The shares of RBL Bank ended nearly 5% higher on Friday. Inox Wind Inox Wind on Friday reported a net loss of ₹73 crore for the quarter ended June 30. The company’s revenue from operations fell to ₹97 crore from ₹260 crore in the same quarter last year. The board of Inox Wind approved raising ₹200 crore via issue of securities. The shares of Inox Wind ended nearly 4% lower on Friday. Top stocks to watch in trade— RIL, Future Enterprises, HCL Technologies, Future Retail, ITC, Indiabulls Ventures, RBL Bank, Inox Wind and more

This move is expected to impact the capital buffers of these banks. According to analysts, these banks would be most impacted by the move as their capital ratios would be affected by 30-85 basis points. For banks the first line of defense against bad loans is CET Tier 1 capital or Common Equity Tier 1 capital (CET1), which is the highest quality of regulatory capital, as it absorbs losses immediately when they occur. According to Motilal Oswal Financial Services, the CET 1 impact would be maximum for RBL/HDFC Bank/ICICI Bank at 84 basis points/72 basis points/64 basis points. Among non banks, SBI Cards would be the most vulnerable with a 416bp impact on capital ratios. Capital buffers will have to be further strengthened by banks if they want to lend to consumers for unsecured loans. If a bank had to set aside say ₹20 for loans, it will now have to set aside 25% more for every unsecured loan it issues. Not just this the banks will have to set aside more capital if they want to lend to shadow banks or non banking financial institutions as well. When cost of capital increases, so will lending rates. In the years after the pandemic broke, unsecured personal loans to retail borrowers have been on a steady rise. Not just banks but even non banks have been merrily issuing such loans to borrowers, and in many cases these borrowers have multiple such loans used for consumption. From 12-14% these loans are now growing at 30% rate. The central bank has cracked down on some non banks for not adhering to norms while underwriting such small ticket loans. The red flags have been flying high for a while now. According to proprietary research done by UBS, borrowers with more than five personal loans rose from 1% in 2018 to 7.7% in March 2023. New disbursement of personal loans to borrowers with weaker credit profiles accounted for 22% of disbursements. Of all banks, UBS was of the view that state-owned banks and non banking financial companies had a much higher share of weak borrowers compared to private banks. Analysts believe that pressure on net interest margins and higher credit costs to impact earnings of banks and shadow banks over FY24 and FY25. Paytm, a fintech company, has recently built a large loan portfolio which is mostly comprised of personal loans. With the <keyword id="30067" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rbi" source="Orion">RBI</keyword> cracking down on these loans, the loan growth will be impacted for Paytm too. Deepak Shenoy, CEO of Capital Mind, took to social media to explain the impact, “See how it affects SBI cards: SBI Cards had credit card receivables of ₹ 45,000 crore with 23% capital adequacy ratio (CAR). So ₹10,500 cr in capital (23% of ₹45Kcr). Increase risk weight to 125% means ₹45K cr=₹56K cr risk weighted assets.” Shenoy explains that if “SBI Cards wants to grow, and keep high CARs (min is 15% I think?) they’ll need to raise capital and dilute. RBI tightens norms on personal loans for banks and NBFCs; stocks to be under pressure

The private sector lender saw a 127% growth in its credit card spends in August, compared to last year. ICICI Bank leaves SBI behind in credit card spends as it chases HDFC Bank in pole position

The voice feature on PUBG game made two cheats become friends during the Covid induced lockdown. Both joined hands and started duping people through spoofed <keyword id="182854" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="SMS-services">sms services</keyword> to send phishing messages of points redemption. Police said on Tuesday the accused -- Tusar Tyagi and Shubham -- became friends while playing PUBG games during the lockdown period. Initially, Shubham started to provide UC game accessories to Tusar and spoke to him through VOIP calls. After they became friends, Shubham told him that he worked in <keyword id="6354680" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="credit">Credit</keyword> and Debit Cards phishing and had good knowledge to earn easy money in <keyword id="32575" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="cyberspace">Cyberspace</keyword>. He offered Tusar 20 per cent commission on the sale of his sellings. During January 2021 Shubham contacted Tusar and asked him to collect his smart mobile phones from <keyword id="152739" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Croma">Croma</keyword> stores and to sell it in open market. "After keeping his commission of 20 per cent, he had to deposit the remaining amount in Shubham's wallet and bank account. Hence, Tusar started working for Shubham. He has deposited approx. ₹2 lakh in Shubham's wallets and bank account till now," said Atul Thakur, DCP South Delhi. The matter came to light when an Advocate lodged a complaint at the Malviya Nagar police station that he had got an SMS on his mobile to redeem his Kotak Mahendra bank and <keyword id="2179992" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBL-Bank">RBL Bank</keyword> credit cards. And, as soon as he clicked on the given web link and entered his card credentials, he lost Rs 1 lakh from his credit cards. Beneficiary accounts and wallets were investigated which revealed that the cheated amount had been credited in a <keyword id="6357120" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> account at first and then it was used for Croma Gift Voucher Accounts. The Delhi Police then alerted the Croma store at <keyword id="187307" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Preet-Vihar">Preet Vihar</keyword> and on February 28, the staff of Croma store informed the police as soon as 21-year-old Tusar Tyagi came to the store. He was arrested under Section 420/120B. The police team is now working to arrest his partner Shubham. In the aftermath of <keyword id="45660" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yes-Bank">Yes Bank</keyword> crisis, Private sector lender <keyword id="2179992" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RBL-Bank">RBL Bank</keyword> on Wednesday said it is "well capitalised" and there is no adverse change in its asset quality. The statement comes in the wake of the Yes Bank crisis, following which stock prices of various banks went sharply down. "The management of RBL Bank wishes to address the prevailing concerns around the bank which is based on misinformation, and warrants clarification," it said in a statement. The lender further said that: "We wish to re-emphasize that RBL Bank is a fundamentally strong institution. Rumours around financial health and stability of the institution especially in social media seem to be misplaced, motivated and not based on facts". The bank said it is well capitalised, has healthy liquidity, growth is on track and management remains firmly committed. "There has been no material adverse change in the asset quality since we announced our Q3 financial results on January 22, 2020 and our guidance remains consistent," the bank said. The bank further said that it has a capital adequacy ratio of 16.08 per cent with Tier-1 at 15.02 per cent (significantly higher than the prescribed regulatory requirement at 11.5 per cent and 9.5 per cent respectively). "All our business segments are doing well, we continue to expand presence across newer geographies by adding branches and are also hiring more people as previously planned," the statement said adding that the bank continues to attract additional deposits from retail, corporates and institutional segments. Shares of RBL Bank were trading at Rs 230.25, higher by 10.80 per cent over its previous close in early trade on <keyword id="35140" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BSE">BSE</keyword>. The stock had witnessed significant downtrend and had slumped over 30 per cent in the previous two trading sessions.
