The Board of <keyword id="46894" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="tata-sons" source="Orion">Tata Sons</keyword> on Friday approved the reappointment of N. <keyword id="56148" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="chandrasekaran" source="Orion">Chandrasekaran</keyword> as the <keyword id="6420527" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="executive" source="Orion">Executive</keyword> Chairman for the next five years. The decision took place during a board meeting held on Friday. Accordingly, the Board reviewed the last five years' performance of the group and considered the reappointment of Chandrasekaran. In a statement, <keyword id="8555" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="tata" source="Orion">Tata</keyword> Sons said that <keyword id="5196318" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ratan-n-tata" source="Orion">Ratan N. Tata</keyword>, who was a special invitee to this meeting, expressed his satisfaction on the progress and performance of the Tata Group under the leadership of Chandrasekaran. "He recommended his term be renewed for a further five-year period," the statement said. "The Board members commended the performance of the Executive Chairman and unanimously approved the reappointment of Mr. <keyword id="97017" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="n-chandrasekaran" source="Orion">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> as the Executive Chairman for the next five years." Tata Group stocks tumble after Mistry's legal win casts a shadow on the conglomerate's hallowed reputation

<keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> Chairman <keyword id="97017" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="N-Chandrasekaran">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> on Wednesday asked all group employees to stay focussed on their businesses and welfare of stakeholders in wake of the NCLAT order that raised issue of his appointment as Executive Chairman of the company. In a message to the employees of the group, Chandrasekaran said Wednesday's "NCLAT ruling, which apart from other things, raises issues on my appointment as Executive Chairman of Tata Sons". He further said, "Tata Sons firmly believes in the strength of our case and will pursue the appropriate legal recourse".
 Going forward, he further said, "I assure you that we have set ourselves on a course that will make the <keyword id="6355725" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-group">Tata Group</keyword> stronger and more vibrant than it has ever been before. I urge all employees to stay focussed on their businesses and the welfare of our stakeholders". Chandrasekaran said ever since he was asked to take on the role and responsibilities of Executive Chairman in February 2017, "our efforts have been primarily focused on: restoring stability and moving decisively towards a healthier financial position; conducting our businesses with the highest ethical standards, which the group has been known for over 150 years".
 He further said "honoring our commitments to all stakeholders and resolving outstanding issues; driving growth and transforming our businesses for the future" were also equally important issues. 
 "We will continue to work towards deepening the legacy of this unique institution," Chandrasekaran said.

Chandasekaran writes to Tata employees; asks them to focus on biz, stakeholders' welfare

The <keyword id="6355014" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="delhi-high-court">Delhi High Court</keyword> on Monday granted more time to the Centre to file the status report in a petition seeking direction for an injunction against the updated privacy policy by WhatsApp. Notably, WhatsApp had asked users to either give their consent to sharing data with Facebook or lose their accounts after February 8. The policy was, however, put on hold till May 15 due to a massive backlash by the users. The petition filed by <keyword id="6360668" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="advocate">Advocate</keyword> Chaitanya Rohilla has claimed that the new policy violates the Right to Privacy guaranteed under the Constitution and gives a 360-degree profile into a person's online activity without any government oversight. During the course of <keyword id="6394153" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Proceedings">proceedings</keyword>, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva granted the government more time and adjourned the matter to April 19. The court refused to issue notice to the respondents in the matter. In a similar matter related to the new privacy policy, Chief Justice D.N. Patel had issued notice to the <keyword id="3428254" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ministry-of-electronics-and-information-technology">Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology</keyword>. The matter will come up for hearing on March 15. In a hearing on January 25, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva emphasized that downloading the application is not mandatory and a person can choose not to download it. "It is voluntary. If you do not want to, you can choose not to. It is not mandatory for you to download it," a single-judge Bench of Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva said, reiterating his stand from an earlier proceeding. Prior to that, the judge had remarked that if a person feels that WhatsApp will compromise data, they must delete it. "It is a private app. Do not join it. What is your grievance? I cannot understand your concern." <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> appointed <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata group</keyword> chief designate <keyword id="97017" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="N-Chandrasekaran">N Chandrasekaran</keyword> as its Chairman today, with immediate effect. With this, he will also be the first non-Parsi chairman of the 150-year old Tata Group. 
 
In a regulatory filing, the company said - "the Board of Directors have today appointed Natarajan Chandrasekaran as additional director and Chairman of the board with immediate effect". 
 The appointment comes within a week of <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> announcing Chandrasekaran as its Executive Chairman, capping two months of a bitter boardroom battle that followed the unceremonious sacking of Cyrus Mistry and letting of bad blood ever since. 
 
Popularly known as 'Chandra', the 54-year-old will take charge at the helm of $103-billion Tata Sons, the main holding company of the salt-to-software conglomerate from February 21. 
 
At Tata Motors, he will have to take the responsibility of turning around the struggling homegrown auto major which is trying to regain lost ground, specially in the passenger vehicles segment. 
 Chandrasekaran will also have to pay special attention to the Nano. Mistry had alleged that Tata Motors has been unable to shut down the loss making small car due to "emotional reasons" and doing so would also stop the supply of "gliders" to an entity that makes electric cars in which <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> has a stake. 
 
Mistry had alleged that the Nano product development called for a car below Rs 1 lakh but the cost was always above this. 
 
"This product has consistently lost money, peaking at Rs 1,000 crore," Mistry said in his letter written to Tata Sons board members a day after he was ousted as the Chairman of India's largest conglomerate. 
 
He further stated, "As there is no line of profitability for the Nano, any turnaround strategy for the company (Tata Motors) requires to shut it down. Emotional reasons alone have kept us away from this crucial decision."

Firdose Vandrevala, a <keyword id="6357147" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Steel">Tata Steel</keyword> deputy MD was moved to head <keyword id="45008" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Power">Tata Power</keyword> and was also chairman of the board for <keyword id="6359475" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Teleservices">Tata Teleservices</keyword>. Among the current leadership at Tatas, N Srinath who heads Tata Teleservices, headed <keyword id="6370462" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Communications">Tata Communications</keyword> in the past. Anil <keyword id="828638" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sardana">Sardana</keyword>, current <keyword id="3817874" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="md-of-tata-power">MD of Tata Power</keyword>, headed Tata Teleservices before Srinath. 
 There have been instances when the CEOs were removed midterm, much like Mistry. Bickson was replaced mid-tenure and <keyword id="2503475" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rosling">Rosling</keyword> left unexpectedly, and so was the case of Green and Vandrevala. 
 However, <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> always preferred CEOs to have prior experience of heading companies or businesses and opted to move up CEOs from smaller companies to larger ones. 
 
While appointing Ratan Tata’s successor both the search committee and Tata himself chose Mistry amongst 6 other internal candidates. It was then told that Tata himself would mentor Mistry for a year. While the hunt for perfect candidate is still on, it’s kind of a déjà vu for Tata Sons. With hardly any time left to train new CEOs, Tata may be considering another paratrooper.

"I cannot all by myself. I need a team to guide me,” Chandrasekaran replied. 
 When <keyword id="6360722" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="ratan-tata">Ratan Tata</keyword> was taking over from JRD Tata, he had no experience in technology and was dependent on FC Kohli to build <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=TCS&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">TCS </a>into the group flagship. 
 
ET quoted people involved in selection process saying that Chandrasekaran's answer made it evident he was ready to hit the ground running. 
 
The selection committee interviewed three other serious contenders - Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth, Harish Manwani of Unilever and Sir George Buckley of the Smiths Group. 
 So how Chandrasekaran, or Chandra, appointed? Well, before the <keyword id="46894" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Sons">Tata Sons</keyword> board met to select the occupant for the corner office, the selection panel briefed the Nomination and Remuneration Committee (NRC) of the board about its unanimous choice. Some of the members of NRC - Tata himself, Ronen Sen and Venu Srinivasan - were also on the selection panel, so the meeting was brief. This was followed by a meeting of the entire board where Chandra, who arrived after addressing the media on TCS' quarterly results, was "officially, given the news. Sources said both Tata and Chandra made short speeches. 
 
After the board meet at Bombay House, the group headquarters of the $103-billion conglomerate in south Mumbai, Chandra and fellow Tata Sons board member Amit Chandra drove back together to the TCS head office. 
 
Pretty early on during selection interviews, the search panel came to the conclusion that, despite the global nature of the process, an internal candidate was to be preferred - one who understood the complexities and ethos of the House of Tatas. 
 
"An external candidate would need some months to grapple with the diversity,” an old group associate told ET. Speth, while an internal candidate, was not an insider in the sense Chandra is. 
 "Look at his value-creation track record and the scale of operations he manages at TCS along with his personal leadership traits and the respect he generates,” another official involved in the process told ET, adding “He has grown TCS substantially from what he inherited from S Ramadorai and helped it topple <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> as the IT bellwether.” 
 
Chandrasekaran has been instrumental in leading business transformation for many of his global clients. And that in turn has given him invaluable insights into customer centricity. 
 
Under Chandrasekaran, TCS had identified a series of future leaders, so taking him out of the organisation would not have triggered a major dislocation. 
 
His finance deputy was the obvious choice to follow in his footsteps. 
 Now, as <keyword id="651163" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Sons-Chairman">Tata Sons Chairman</keyword>, Chandrasekaran's job will be to create his own brain trust at the earliest. So that would mean the long awaited group chief financial officer's position getting filled. 
 
Some would even expect the creation of a vice-chairman's role - something that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cyrus+mistry&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Cyrus Mistry</a> had promised the Tata Sons board but never did. 
 
"The selection panel or the board could not have done that for him. He has to lead that initiative,” a senior Tata Group official told ET.
