You can only imagine how a work day for <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> head looks like but we can tell you that, he’s now making the most of his commute thanks to better connectivity, more than ever. 
 <keyword id="824043" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Business-Insider">Business Insider</keyword> caught up with <keyword id="249393" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajan-Anandan">Rajan Anandan</keyword>, VP, <keyword id="4405979" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="google-se-asia-india">Google SE Asia &amp; India</keyword> to understand how the internet landscape has changed in the past few months. 
 “India is the biggest market for us and it has a very diverse user base. We are always going to have a clear distinction between India and the US for the next several years,” says <keyword id="198577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anandan">Anandan</keyword> on where India stands for <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword>. 
 
India currently has around 400 million internet users, 300 million of them are coming online through their smartphone which makes it the second largest internet market in the world after China.

 In the past few months, a lot of things have changed in the internet landscape with low-cost carrier <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> coming in. The Google chief thinks that this has changed things tremendously for the entire telecom sector, “There is now an enormous user base that’s spending its time online, with network providers also upgrading their services and not just giving more for less. Our mission in India is to make information accessible to everyone and that means reaching out to the massive 1.3 Billion population in the country. The Internet for everyone is the goal,” said Anandan. 
 
The first challenge for Google is Access and they’ve tackled that with providing high-speed public Wi-Fi at railway stations and after covering 110 stations, we now have 5 million Indians accessing it every day. With 500, 000 Indians accessing the internet with Google India for the first time, the company plans to extend it to 400 stations by the year 2018.

 With revolutionary projects like Smart Cities, Google is partnering with the government at <keyword id="3025354" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pune-Smart-City">Pune Smart City</keyword> to provide high-speed Wi-Fi. 
The other concerns are connectivity and affordability and while currently, there at 125 million 4G subscribers and 150 million 3G subscribers, there are still issues like patchy connectivity. 
 Google is trying to get a lot of its services like <keyword id="10879" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="YouTube">YouTube</keyword>, Maps and even Chrome offline to make the internet more accessible to most Indians. There’s Search Lite which detects how slow is your network and works accordingly.

<ul><li><keyword id="249393" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajan-Anandan">Rajan Anandan</keyword>, VP for Google South East Asia and India, has called it quits at the company. </li><li>While he will stay on at Google until the end of April, he will then be joining <keyword id="563136" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sequoia-India">Sequoia India</keyword>, a top VC firm. </li><li>Vikas Agnihotri, Country Director, Sales will be replacing him as the interim MD at <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword>. </li></ul>Rajan Anandan, the VP for Google South East Asia and India, has resigned from the Internet giant to join the VC firm Sequoia Capital’s India and SEA wing. Anandan joins Sequoia as managing director and will be part of its leadership team. He will also lead Sequoia’s accelerator program Surge. Surge has on offer $1.5 million of seed capital along with “company-building workshops, global immersion trips and support from a community of exceptional founders”, according to an official blog from the company. “Rajan’s deep understanding of technology, significant operating expertise and a track record of growing tech businesses across the region will help Surge founders scale and build the transformational businesses of tomorrow,” said Shailendra J Singh, managing director at Sequoia, in a post on LinkedIn. While Anandan will stay on at Google until the end of April, the company has appointed Vikas Agnihotri, Country Director, Sales as the interim MD. Anandan has often been credited for having catapulted Google’s growth in India, over his tenure of eight years in the company. However, his entry into investments is not new. Anandan has been an active angel investor and also a member of the Indian Angel Network. Google India head Rajan Anandan quits to join VC firm Sequoia

It’s been almost a year that Google set up its late-stage investment arm in India so that the local start-ups can be doubled down, and now, the tech giant is set to task <keyword id="3275181" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kaushik-Anand">Kaushik Anand</keyword>, California-based company executive and former Sequoia Capital investment analyst, to drive Google Capital's India outpost. The news was shared with ET by two people directly aware of the matter, on the condition of anonymity. 
 
Anand is currently based out of Mountain View, California, but would move to India soon and push Google Capital's late-stage bets in the country. 
 "(Google Capital has) done four investments here. We've got a Google Capital team member here - we will announce that soon. He is going to be based here. You're going to see us do more and more investments here," <keyword id="249393" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajan-Anandan">Rajan Anandan</keyword>, MD for Google South East Asia and India, had said last week. 
 
Anandan had also said that Google Capital, which has an annual corpus of $300 million for investments had decided to bet on India because of the shortage of late-stage investors in the country.

Kaushik Anand could be moving to India to head Google start-up investments

<ul><li>The <keyword id="6354335" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reserve-bank-of-india">Reserve Bank of India</keyword> has requested all payment companies in India to store local data within the country’s borders.</li><li>The central bank have given all payment companies six months to comply with the notice.</li><li><keyword id="6355629" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="google">Google</keyword> says it is already taking user privacy seriously.</li></ul>Following the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) request to all payment companies operating in India to setup data storage facilities, Google has started to work with the Indian government and industry to map out the best suitable policy for consumers. “We follow local laws and local legislation, so whatever India decides we will comply with,” Rajan <keyword id="198577" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Anandan">Anandan</keyword>, Vice President for <keyword id="45395" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> and South East Asia, <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/internet/will-comply-with-local-data-hosting-norms-google-chief/articleshow/64071965.cms">told Economic Times in an interview</a>. Anandan said that the company will be letting consumers choose how much data the company stores, along with an option for “taking it down”. He further added that Google is working with the local government to come up with the “right answer” that is good for both the country and its consumers. Currently, Google dominates the internet in India through its search engine, YouTube, and the Android OS, which is the most used operating system in the country. The company also runs <keyword id="704860" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tez">Tez</keyword>, the second-most-used-payment application. The RBI has imposed a deadline of six months on all payment companies operating in India to setup storage facilities in the country. The deadline evoked mixed reactions, with some sectors arguing that the deadline period is too short to comply, while others fear that it will disrupt a well-established global network and hinder new innovation. Google launched its local data center in Mumbai in September 2017. “Today, it is a global Internet economy. Obviously, when you change any aspect of that you have to be very thoughtful of what you want to change, because it has implications on many things,” Anandan said. “You are changing complete architectures, very large infrastructures and networks, but our view is very simple. We should come up with right answer collectively. But it should all focus on what is the right answer for the Indian consumer,” he added. Storing data locally will require a lot of modification to the existing infrastructure, and Anandan said that it will “not be easy”. Following the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook%E2%80%93Cambridge_Analytica_data_scandal">Cambridge Analytica data leak</a>, the government has been looking to mandate all internet firms to host data locally to protect user privacy.

Google says it will comply with local data norms in India

There are around 51 million Small and Medium Businesses (SMEs) in India. However, less than 5-6 per cent are currently online. Goggle aims to bridge this titanic gap with its mobile app, <keyword id="2624167" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google-My-Business">Google My Business</keyword> (GMB). 
 "In the next three years, India will have over 500 million internet users, who will search for information, including local businesses. The search experience for local business in India is broken today and we want to help connect businesses and customers," <keyword id="249393" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Rajan-Anandan">Rajan Anandan</keyword>, VP and Managing Director, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> South East Asia and India told reporters today. 
 
The app will help small and medium businesses (SMBs) create and manage information about their businesses online in English and Hindi across the Google platform for free. They’ll neither have to invest in a website, nor a domain. 
 
"GMB is our first mobile-based product initiative for SMBs and we have seen huge uptake of it. In the last five months of the pilot phase, over a million SMBs have already signed on. We are engaging with 25,000 new SMBs every week," Anandan said. 
 
The search engine giant aims to bring 20 million small and medium businesses in India online by 2017 through the new app. 
 Google had earlier launched the immensely successful '<keyword id="2870010" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="India-Get-Your-Business-Online">India Get Your Business Online</keyword>' scheme to provide free website, domain and web hosting to Indian SMBs. The programme had helped around half a million businesses in India.

<ul><li><keyword id="7694" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjay-Gupta">Sanjay Gupta</keyword> is the new country manager and vice president of sales and operations for <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword>.</li><li>His appointment comes after Rajan Anandan, the VP for Google South East Asia and India, resigned in April.</li><li>Gupta is leaving his Star and <keyword id="149162" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Disney-India">Disney India</keyword>’s managing director position to lead Google.</li></ul>Google India has snagged Disney India’s former head, Sanjay Gupta as its new country manager and VP of sales and operations. “I am delighted to take on the challenge of leading and shaping Google’s charter in India. It is an exciting opportunity to leverage the power of technology to solve some of India’s unique challenges and make Internet an engine of economic growth for people and communities,” said Gupta. Gupta will take over his role at Google early next year. Rajan Anandan, the VP for Google South East Asia and India, resigned in April this year. Anandan was replaced by Vikas Agnihotri, country director of sales who took on the role of Google India’s interim MD. Gupta had earlier worked with top companies like Hindustan Unilever and Bharti Airtel. His most recent stint was as the MD of Star and Disney India, where he also led the digital evolution of Hotstar. The IIM Kolkata-graduate was also an alumnus of Delhi College of Engineering. “We are excited to combine Sanjay’s expertise, experience and leadership with our teams and build further on our existing efforts in this highly dynamic, competitive and exciting digital economy, looking to build a more helpful and inclusive Internet for everyone in India,” Scott Beaumont, President of APAC, Google said.

Google India will now be led by former Star and Disney India head Sanjay Gupta

<ul><li><keyword id="30126" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amit-Jain">Amit Jain</keyword> has joined the VC firm as a Managing Director.</li><li>Jain will be based out of Singapore. </li><li>He had been appointed as <keyword id="2502101" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uber-India">Uber India</keyword> head in 2015. In 2018 he went on to head the APAC business.</li></ul>Sequoia Capital India has brought former Uber India head on Amit Jain on board, as its managing director. Jain will be based out of Singapore. “His addition to the team underscores our deep commitment to helping founders realise their dreams of building very large and enduring companies, many of whom will become key pillars of this region’s growth, prosperity and innovation,” said the company in a statement. Jain had quit as Uber’s Asia Pacific head in April. Jain was appointed as Uber India head in 2015, and went on to head its APAC business in 2018. Before Uber, Jain was the President at Rent.com, a housing classifieds site in Los Angeles. He had also worked at TPG Capital and McKinsey. <keyword id="563136" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sequoia-India">Sequoia India</keyword> has been on a <keyword id="6357342" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hiring">hiring</keyword> spree in 2019, adding many star candidates to its list. Sequoia India hires former Uber Asia Pacific head Amit Jain

After Google and Apple, <keyword id="6354576" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> is raising money for the victims of <keyword id="4928388" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="hurricane-harvey">Hurricane Harvey</keyword> that lashed through the US state of Texas. It has raised $10 million for victims already. Founder Mark Zuckerberg said Facebook is also starting a fundraising campaign to help people affected by floods in South Asia. "Together the Facebook community has raised over $10 million to help people affected by Hurricane Harvey. This includes all of the fundraisers you've run and the $1 million match from Facebook. Thank you for all your generosity," Zuckerberg wrote in a post. "We're also starting a fundraising campaign to help people affected by the floods in South Asia.  Apple had announced that it has partnered with the American Red Cross to accept donations through the iTunes Store for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Apple CEO <keyword id="191843" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tim-Cook">Tim Cook</keyword> tweeted: "Prayers for Texas and all those affected by #HurricaneHarvey. Join us in the relief effort by donating: http://apple.co/2xmVm50." Users can donate money in $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 and $200 denominations and Apple will transfer all the money to the Red Cross. Google also pledged $1 million relief to flood-hit areas of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. "We are committing $1 million from Google.org and Google employees to Goonj and Save the Children for their relief efforts," Rajan Anandan, Vice-President, South East Asia and India, wrote in a blog post. Save the Children is working in the flood-affected areas of the three countries and aims to reach a total of 160,000 people.

After Apple and Google, now Facebook is raising millions for Hurricane Harvey victims

The philanthropic arm of Google, called Google.org, has announced a grant funding of Rs 54 million for three Indian non-profit organisations, namely <keyword id="3271283" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ratnanidhi-Charitable-Trust">Ratnanidhi Charitable Trust</keyword>, <keyword id="3271179" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Leprosy-Mission-Trust-India">Leprosy Mission Trust India</keyword> and <keyword id="3271180" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Public-Health-Foundation-India">Public Health Foundation India</keyword>. 
 
As per sources, this grant will be used towards using technology so that people living with disabilities can have more access and opportunities. 
These grants are the result of the global Google Impact Challenge for disabilities, which is an initiative to invest US$20 million in non-profit organisations, which are using emerging technologies so that disabled people can be made independent. 
 
In the event, NGOs from across the world were invited so that they could submit ideas for making a real and positive impact for disable people. 
 
"Innovative technologies are already helping to improve everyday life for people living with disabilities. Through these grants, we want to empower organizations to build impactful solutions that will create better access for people living with disabilities in India," Rajan Anandan, Vice President and Managing Director, Google India and Southeast Asia told ET. 
 
 
Individudally, Ratnanidhi Charitable Trust will use the money to provide improved access to a well-fitting artificial leg by using 3D scanning and printing technologies. The Leprosy Mission Trust India, on the other hand, will be establishing a facility to create high-quality, customized, protective footwear using 3D technologies for people suffering from leprosy. The Public Health Foundation India, however, will focus on developing a mobile app so that village healthcare workers can rapidly and reliably assess eligibility for government disability benefits. 
 
The announcement was made today at the TechShare India event in New Delhi.

Three Indian non-profit organisations get grants worth Rs 54 million from Google.org

With an aim to eliminate <keyword id="2749116" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="digital-divide-in-India">digital divide in India</keyword>, while addressing a <keyword id="6372077" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasscom">NASSCOM</keyword> event on March 1, 2015, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> asserted that there is immense potential for the Indian IT sector to innovate and provide mobile applications to deliver citizen- centric services and mobile governance. PM Modi has advocated the use of technology for bringing a positive change in people’s lives. 
 Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister said that he was planning to invite ideas from the public for developing a <keyword id="6369871" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Mobile-app">mobile app</keyword> for his office. 
 And today (March 2, 2015) <keyword id="2445183" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="MyGov">MyGov</keyword>, which is the citizen engagement platform of the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword>, has announced the launch of a nationwide contest to build a mobile app for the <keyword id="602601" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Prime-Ministers-Office">Prime Minister’s Office</keyword> (<keyword id="6365387" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="PMO">PMO</keyword>). 
 The contest will invite participation from people across India. In order to select the best ideas to develop the mobile app for the PMO, MyGov has collaborated with none other than the <keyword id="2749117" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="tech-giant-Google">tech giant Google</keyword>. The contest will open up for the public at 5:00 pm on on <a href="https://mygov.in/">MyGov.in</a>. 
 
The contest has been divided into three phases: 
· The first phase will seek ideas from the public on what they would like to see in the mobile app for the PMO 
· The second phase will involve building wireframes 
· The final phase will include short listing, judging and building the app 
 Commenting on the initiative, Rajan Anandan, vice-president and managing director, <keyword id="45395" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Google-India">Google India</keyword> &amp; South-East Asia, said, “We announced about five months ago that we will contribute on the Digital India initiative and the app development contest is a step in that direction.” 
 
“We are very excited to be a part of the Prime Minister’s vision and would urge every Indian to come forward and participate in the app development contest and become a cohesive part of governance and decision making in the country,” added Anandan. 
 Talking about the announcement, <keyword id="933930" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Gaurav-Dwivedi">Gaurav Dwivedi</keyword>, <keyword id="5645" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="CEO">CEO</keyword>, MyGov, said, “We want to provide every citizen access to the PMO through a mobile device. And since this is an app for the people, we are inviting people to submit ideas on the features they would like to see in their PMO’s mobile app.”

Aimed at bringing 300 million people online, search giant <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> has partnered content providers along with government agency, <keyword id="541856" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="CDAC">CDAC</keyword> to make regional content available on Internet. 
 It has announced the creation of the Indian Language Internet Alliance (<keyword id="2582343" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="ILIA">ILIA</keyword>), and through this group it is looking at promoting the growth of Indic-language content online. The ILIA is composed of Times Internet Limited, Patrika Group, Process Nine Technologies Pvt Ltd, Prost Innovation Pvt Ltd, Reverie Language Technologies Private Limited, Ver Se Innovation/NewsHunt, Webdunia.com etc in addition to Google. Under this alliance, Google also launched a new website called www.<keyword id="6357660" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="hindi">hindi</keyword>web.com which curates content from these content partners in Hindi language. 
	 

	In order to provide Internet connectivity to 300 million by 2017, Google will also offer voice search service in Hindi. Going forward, Google also plans to include other Indian languages such as Tamil, Marathi and Bengali. 
 

	"India has about 200 million Internet users with about 5 million new users being added every month with 100 percent coming through mobile devices. At this pace, India will overtake the US in terms of number of users in the next 12 months," Google India Vice President and Managing Director Rajan Anandan said.
 

	“However, only 198 million people in the country are estimated to be proficient in English with most of them already on the Internet. The group is committed to promoting the growth of Indic- language content online. The Indian Language Internet Alliance (ILIA) hopes to enable 300 million Indian language speakers to become highly engaged Internet users by 2017," he added.
 

	Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar welcomed this move and expressed hope that if Internet becomes available in Indian languages, then the number of Internet users in the country will go up to 50 crore. “This will help in realisation of digital India initiative of the government. It is an important initiative," he said.

Google Has A New Gameplan To Win More Internet Users In India

Rajan Anandan, Google's managing director in India and Southeast Asia, apparently told the FT that he wanted Android One to target Indian "sweet spot" of $31 - $47 but the article was later corrected to insist that the phone would not be sold at under 3000 rupees, or $47).The news will cause pain to high-price Android phone manufacturers like Samsung, HTC and LG. We told you yesterday that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/android-fragmentation-and-htc-sales-and-profits-2015-8">HTC now makes such high losses selling Androids that its stock indicates the company is technically worthless</a>. And LG currently makes only 1.2 cents profit per phone that it sells. Samsung's revenues have also been in decline, as super-cheap Android phones cream off the low end of its business and Apple's iPhone 6 decimates the high end.So it looks as if Google's super-cheap Android One - which is also supposed to be a high-quality phone - will bring even more discount pricing pain to those companies.Given that Google needs Android manufacturers to be successful in order to make Android a widespread platform for the apps that Google makes from, why would Google do this? Anandan told the FT:"Strategically it [India] is very, very important," he added. "Don't get me wrong, the revenue is interesting but ... we're here really because 10 years from now a billion Indians will be online and when we have a billion Indians online we think that's going to make a huge difference to the global internet economy."<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image"><a title_source="Google" title_caption="We don't yet know what the next version of Android One will look like. This was the first version.</div></div></div>A billion users might buy a lot of apps (from Google Play) or see a lot of Google ads when they use their phones to search for things.More importantly, 1 billion new phone users will maintain Google's dominance of smartphone market share. While Apple's iPhone 6 may become the single biggest-selling phone of all time, the phone market overall appears to be in the process of shrugging it off in favour of Android.Take, for example, China, where Apple has had a massive success in selling the iPhone in recent years. China is now as big or bigger than the US in terms of iPhone sales. The war will have casualties, however, as Samsung and HTC are finding out.Interestingly, Anandan doesn't see those victories coming automatically, or purely based on price (Apple's phones will always be sold at much high prices than Androids):"There are several battlegrounds where we are not winning [and] local search is clearly the one where it's most apparent," Mr Anandan said, noting competition from JustDial, a Mumbai-listed Indian search start-up.

Google is launching a $50 Android

According to the report, since consumers are more certain about their choice, instance of them switching between brands has declines by 4% over the last two years from 11% in 2016 to 7% in 2018.  It doesn’t matter whether its the automobile industry or not, the number of Indian users online as increased dramatically since Jio started offering cheap access to internet and affordable phones. Last year Rajan Anandan, the vice president for India and South East Asia at Google, <a href="https://www.exchange4media.com/digital-news/india-to-reach-650-mn-internet-users-by-2020rajan-anandangoogle-india-70074.html">disclosed</a> that India is adding nearly 10 million daily active internet users every month. He added that video watch time has seen a 400% year-on-year growth in the country. These findings were based on research conducted by Kantar TNS. The research covers 4,000 respondents in India engaged via online or face-to-face interviews with an average length of 25 minutes for telephone interviews and 30+ mins for face-to-face interviews.
