He then dropped to the floor and hit the ground, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/olympics/article-9867079/Japans-Masatora-Kawano-VOMITS-collapses-floor-FINISHING-50km-walk-race.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to Mail Online</a>.</p><p>Olympic commentators suggested Kawano's race was over.</p><p>However, it was a herculean performance from the Japanese racewalker as he picked himself up from the ground, finished, and placed sixth with a time of three hours, 51 minutes, and 56 seconds.</p><p>He wasn't too far off the podium, either, as Evan Dunfee of Canada won bronze with a time of three hours, 50 minutes, and 59 seconds.</p><p>Jonathan Hilbert, of Germany, won the silver medal with a time of three hours, 50 minutes, and 44 seconds.</p><p>The gold medal heads to Poland as Dawid Tomala won the race with a three-hour, 50-minute, and eight-second finish.</p>

This was great for cardio laps, but there was no air conditioning, which made the gym feel like a sauna. During the muggiest days, heat rising to the top of certain sections could quickly cause metal climbing equipment to become hot to the touch.</p><p>Sport climbing was one of this year's <a href="https://www.nbcolympics.com/news/tokyo-olympics-101-new-sports">new events</a> at the Olympics in Tokyo, along with skateboarding, surfing, freestyle BMX cycling, and 3-on-3 basketball. "It's like paddling in bathwater."</p><p>H​​umidity also ranged from 66% to 84%, often making competition feel even worse and more difficult for athletes to cool down.</p><p>"I've played tennis now professionally for 20 years, and I've never faced this kind of conditions in my entire life on a consecutive daily basis," the tennis star ​​Novak Djokovic <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/olympics/2021/07/28/die-will-take-responsibility-tennis-players-wilt-tokyo-heat/">told The Telegraph</a>.</p><p>In 2019, the International Olympic Committee shifted the marathon and race-walking events 500 miles north to Sapporo, a move that was expected to reduce temperatures by 10 degrees. And there's already research showing appropriate conditions for this level of competition will soon become increasingly rare.</p><p>A <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(16)31335-6/fulltext">2016 report</a> showed fewer major cities will be able to host a Summer Olympics by 2085. Of those, the latter is so common that runners call it <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/runners-diarrhea/expert-answers/faq-20058107">"Runner's Trots</a>."&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>According to the Mayo Clinic,&#xa0;scientists still aren't sure exactly what causes runner's diarrhea, but <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/runners-diarrhea/expert-answers/faq-20058107">they have some compelling theories</a>.&#xa0;Some suggest it's a result of the severe<span>&#xa0;physical jostling a marathon can impose on&#xa0;your internal&#xa0;organs. Others think it happens after prolonged periods of decreased blood flow to your&#xa0;intestines. </span></p><p><span>Personally, the one that hits home the most for me is pre-race anxiety and stress. As a former competitive swimmer, I can honestly say there's no sensation that&#xa0;quite equals the stomach-churning fight-or-flight butterflies I used to get just before diving into the water.</span></p><p><span>Among all of these theories, one thing is clear from studies on long-distance athletes: <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/runners-diarrhea/expert-answers/faq-20058107">Food simply moves more quickly through your system</a>&#xa0;when you're an athlete&#xa0;training for a strenuous event.</span></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Aside from diarrhea, many long-distance runners&#xa0;and race-walkers&#xa0;experience other health issues during or after training, including&#xa0;acid reflux, a condition with effects like heartburn, indigestion, coughing, hoarseness, and asthma.</p><p>There's even some evidence to suggest that prolonged, intense exercise - like&#xa0;the kind&#xa0;you'd do&#xa0;in the weeks and months before a marathon and during&#xa0;the race - can&#xa0;<a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2803113/">negatively affect your immune system</a>&#xa0;by reducing the&#xa0;body's natural ability to fend off upper-respiratory infections including colds and the flu.</p><h2>Marathoners, meet interval training</h2><p>Still, there's good news for those of us who are committed to working out. There's plenty of evidence, in fact, that suggests you can get some of the same benefits of long-distance running and other types of endurance training <strong>without ever passing the five-mile mark.</strong></p><p>That's right. Running fast and hard for just five to 10 minutes a day may help&#xa0;add years to your life, just as running for hours can. In fact, people who run for less than an hour a week - so long as they get in their few minutes of daily running - appear to rack up&#xa0;<a href="http://content.onlinejacc.org/article.aspx?articleID=1891600">similar benefits in terms of heart health</a> compared with people who run more than three hours a week.</p><p>That finding squares with recent research showing that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/easy-ways-to-lose-weight-get-fit-in-new-year-2014-12">short bursts of intense exercise can provide some of the same health benefits</a> as long, endurance-style workouts.</p><p>One of the most popular forms of the quick workout - and the one that has been studied the most - is <a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22100179">interval training</a>.
