<ul><li><keyword id="6354512" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> temporarily froze hiring, promotions and appraisals in view of the <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">Coronavirus</keyword> pandemic. </li><li>It will onboard all the campus and lateral hires to whom they made job offers. </li><li>However, Pravin Rao, COO at Infosys, did not hint of any furloughs or layoffs. </li><li>The company said that all the 6,000 trainees will now continue their training remotely. “There are assessments, certifications and other online training to facilitate remote programmes,” Rao added. </li><li>Rao said that the company is planning to make more than 35,000 offers in FY21.</li></ul>Infosys, in its latest earnings call, said that it has temporarily froze hiring, promotions and appraisals in view of the Coronavirus pandemic, calling it a ‘no regret’ move. For IT giants wages, employee costs and campus placement drives make up for over half of its operational costs. ‘We will honour all offers made — freshers and lateral hires’ Infosys however said that it will onboard all the campus hires. With this, it joins the likes of Accenture, Tata Consultancy Sevices (TCS) and other tech giants who will honour all the job offers made in the last financial year. A large number of companies have rescinded campus job offers forcing even IITs to hold a second placement drive in late July and August. “We are yet to onboard only a small percentage of campus hires we made offers to so far,” said Pravin Rao, COO at Infosys. The technology multinational made 18,000 job offers the last financial year. It said it will also onboard the lateral hires. “We will honour all the commitments made to campus hires — freshers as well as lateral. As far as onboarding timelines are concerned, we have already hired a few lateral employees, while in lockdown,” he said during its Q4 earnings call. Employee count decreases by over 1,000 <div type="image" title="infy employees" msid="75253862" hostid="261"></div> There has been a decrease in the employee headcount — by over 1,000. The employee count at Infosys stood at 243,454 during the third quarter ending in December 2019 — higher than 242,371 as of March 2020. “We should not read into the fall in employee count, it is not a secular trend,” Rao said. He did not hint any furloughs or layoffs, given the Coronavirus chaos. Going forward, Rao said that the company is planning to make more than 35,000 offers in FY21. “In the near term, there will be a demand-supply mismatch because we were already geared for high volume in the first quarter. We have to ensure that the utilisation rates go up,” said Nilanjan Roy, CFO at Infosys. Remote assessment for nearly 6,000 trainees Infosys claims to have a strong digital footprint. The company said that all the 6,000 trainees will now continue their training remotely. “There are assessments, certifications and other online training to facilitate remote programmes,” Rao added. In fact, as much as 93% of the employees at Infosys are now working from home, thanks to the lockdown. The focus is on employee safety. “We will revisit as the situation evolves, keeping the safety of employees a priority. We will also take initiatives like temperature check etc,” the company said. However, as a new normal emerges after the lockdown ends, just like TCS, Infosys also plans to retain work from home. Infosys has a new 'no regret' policy when it comes to employees

With the month of appraisals ahead, the recent crisis in Infosys isn’t really going down well with the employees. India's second-largest software services exporter has already come under criticism after CEO Vishal Sikka got a hike of 55%. The co founder and IT veteran of the country Narayana Murthy as well as other promoters aren’t content with the present management and have called for an overhaul of the board. 
 
Sikka’s compensation hike that rose to$11 million a year from $7.08 million has made the CEO compensation to median employee remuneration ratio to 935.38 times. 
 
"People are happy with Vishal Sikka but not with his salary,” a Pune-based employee told The Economic Times. 
"Infosys hasn't raised visa requests for the system engineers and senior system engineers. There is a general sense that promotions will be halted or delayed by using these governance issues and results as an excuse,” ET learnt from another employee. 
 
Murthy, in an interview to ET, questioned the actions of Infosys Chairman R Seshasayee and independent director Jeffrey Lehman. 
 
On Thursday, Sikka wrote to employees asking them not to be distracted by speculation about the company's commitment to governance, integrity and values, and highlighted the improvements the company has made in his tenure. Also the recent murder case at Infy’s Pune campus has dented the reputation of the IT exporter to some level.

Promotions and Increments may take a hit

<keyword id="267073" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="EY">EY</keyword>, <keyword id="53186" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="PwC">PwC</keyword>, <keyword id="6358918" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deloitte">Deloitte</keyword> and KPMG- the Big Four, in hope to get the best talent, are tweaking terms in employee contracts where the new employees will get a fixed amount of <keyword id="6370334" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="appraisals">appraisals</keyword> for two years regardless of their performance. 
 
"My team has earned Rs 16 crore while he (pointing towards a colleague in an adjacent cabin) has managed only Rs 6 crore. Yet, I get 10%, my team members get even worse and he gets 20% while two of his team members are promoted,” an advisory partner in one of the four firms told ET. 
 
Every partner across the firm earns about Rs 10 crore as revenue every year and as if this wasn’t enough, some of the new partners will be getting anyways between 50%-100% of their annual salary as bonuses. This, say industry trackers, is one of the reasons why consultancies have become turbulent. 
 
"When a consultant is moving from company A to B, he/she needs some time to settle down and they are now demanding guarantee of bonus so that in the initial one year, they get a cushion,” the head of an executive search firms that works with some of these firms told ET. 
 
"The Big Four audit firms are resorting to innovative and aggressive practices to woo talent as they look at big bonanza this season because audit contracts with public companies are coming for a 10-year rotation and there is enough scampering for new clients as the firms want to showcase new talent in their ranks. Also, there is plenty of tax-related work with GST and firms have to go all way out to tap into the best talent,” R Suresh, managing director of RGF Executive Search India told ET. 
 The Bg Four have recently seen partners moving from one firm to another with their teams. Recently, about 20 partners and about 300 executives with <keyword id="50041" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="KPMG">KPMG</keyword> put in their papers to join Deloitte. Before that some of the senior executives from KPMG's tax practice joined PwC. On their part, KPMG too has poached partners from its rivals in the last one year. 
 
In all these cases, those partners who have jumped boats are given favorable terms where their appraisals will not depend upon their performance for the first two-three years, say insiders.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Getty</div></div></div><ul><li>The pace of condo and co-op sales in Manhattan slowed in the first quarter to an almost nine-year low, according to the real-estate appraiser Miller Samuel and Douglas Elliman Real Estate.</li><li>Buyers got more aggressive about negotiating for discounts amid rising mortgage rates and uncertainty about the tax law's impact.</li></ul>Manhattan home sales slowed to the lowest levels in nearly a decade last quarter, as buyers negotiated more forcefully for discounts. In the first quarter, condo and co-op sales fell by 25%, the most since Q2 2009, according to data compiled by the real-estate appraiser Miller Samuel and Douglas Elliman Real Estate. The total number of sales, at 2,180, was the lowest in more than six years. About a third of the year-on-year decline last quarter was attributable to the boom in construction of units that started many years ago but only closed over the last 2-3 years, said Jonathan Miller, the CEO of Miller Samuel.Aside from that pipeline running dry, the recent slowdown also reflects what's happening right now. Mainly, buyers are pushing hard for bigger discounts from listed prices.Miller estimates that the remaining two-thirds of the decline can be explained by reluctant buyers, and an ongoing evaluation of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/trump-new-tax-law-mortgage-interest-property-tax-deduction-affect-homeowners-2018-3">what the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act means for home values</a> in Manhattan. "The market is resetting," Miller told Business Insider. "It's still brisk as you skew lower in price, but it's not as robust as it's been."Another sign that buyers were more aggressive about negotiating lower prices was a smaller number of bidding wars. About 9% of closings in the first quarter were above the asking price - the lowest share since the fourth quarter of 2012, according to Miller. As recently as Q3 2015, buyers scrambled to outbid each other on a record 31% of units. They have more to consider now, including <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mortgage-rates-are-rising-2018-2">rising mortgage rates</a> and tax changes. The new tax law caps the deduction for state and local property taxes at $10,000. Also, homeowners who deduct mortgage interest are limited to the amount they pay on $750,000 worth of their mortgages, down from $1 million. This change would only affect the most expensive markets in the country, including Manhattan, where the median sales price is $1.08 million. "The federal government is in the process of extracting itself from the homeownership promotion business," Miller said. "There's things to offset that, like doubling the standard deduction for single and multiple households. Manhattan home sales plunge to the slowest pace since 2009 as buyers fight for bigger discounts

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jonathan Miller is a real-estate appraiser who's published monthly housing reports for 27 years.</li><li>Everyone from The Wall Street Journal to The East Hampton Star quotes his data and analyses.</li></ul>On a hot July day seven years ago, Jonathan Miller took his 29-foot Hydra-Sports powerboat out into the Long Island Sound off the coast of Connecticut. The boat smelled like sea salt from his recent lobster-fishing trip. The water in the estuary was clear and calm. Miller and his wife, Cheryl, were enjoying the sunshine when his iPhone rang. The call was from a journalist at an international paper asking for Miller's comment on the US housing market for a story. "I didn't even tell them I was on a boat, just that I didn't have my laptop handy if they needed numbers, he said. This, Miller said, was one of the strangest places he has ever answered a call from a journalist. But for those who know Miller, it's not strange at all. The 62-year-old founder of the real-estate-appraisal and data firm Miller Samuel is probably the most-quoted man in real estate, with some 2,469 news citations, according to the database LexisNexis. After all, he releases monthly and quarterly housing-sales and rental reports on behalf of Douglas Elliman in 14 different markets across the country — and has done so for the last 27 years.<div type="image" title="Jonathan Miller with a graph behind him" height="2220" width="2960" msid="96650319" hostid="261" sizebytes="225892"></div>Especially now, when relatively high mortgage rates, rapidly declining demand, and even scarily dipping home prices are battering the market, Miller has steered the public through it all and provided accurate information so that both industry veterans and regular people can understand what the heck is going on with residential real estate — and make important life decisions accordingly. His nontraditional background — he's an appraiser, not an economist — puts him in a unique position to translate what can be a jargon-filled and opaque topic for the masses. He's ready for the challenge.<h2>Impartiality is crucial to Miller's success</h2>Miller is a polymath: he has <a href="https://account.miamiherald.com/paywall/subscriber-only?resume=136004513&amp;intcid=ab_archive">guided Floridians</a> through understanding how Miami could adjust and profit off of the influx of New York-based buyers in 2020; he's <a href="https://www.bisnow.com/new-york/news/multifamily/one-wall-street-110814">predicted</a> how a downtown Manhattan office-turned-condo building could cause a surplus of residences for sale that will push down sales prices in the area for years to come; and in the spring, <a href="https://www.mansionglobal.com/articles/aspens-market-is-so-crazy-that-buyers-shop-for-homes-that-arent-even-for-sale-01654180192" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he explained</a> the impact of the ultra-luxury market on real estate in the bougie ski destination of Aspen, Colorado. His most relevant hot take right now isn't even that hot: Miller opposes the idea that the US housing market will crash now the way it did during the Great Recession. Like many of his peers, he argues that there are too few properties on the market compared to those seeking homes for that to happen, and that the market varies too much locally. <h2>'When things are bad, I say they're bad'</h2>His honesty has not always been welcome. In the years that preceded the Great Recession, he said, he had to start requiring mortgage-broker clients working for banks to pay his company before the appraisal because so many refused to pay if they did not get the valuation they wanted. In order to attract and keep business, other appraisers would assess properties higher than their actual value in New York City, he said. One time, he even saw a luxury condo appraised at $15 million over its actual value. "We weren't morally flexible," he said. "And that made us a pariah for mortgage brokers." So Miller Samuel had to pivot away from relying so heavily on institutional players, which had made up 75% of its business. He instead started catering to individuals who needed appraisals, like private lawyers or co-op boards, to keep the company from going under, Miller said. <div type="image" title="New York City condo buildings in 2009" height="682" width="910" msid="96650321" hostid="261" sizebytes="120344"></div>But days after Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy in 2008, the tide changed."All of a sudden, our company was seen as genius because we never lost our mind," he said. His candor over the last 36 years has helped him rise to a vaunted position in a crowded field of experts, including <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rising-stars-of-real-estate-residential-commercial-proptech-industrial-leaders-2022-11#daryl-fairweather-34-9">Redfin's Daryl Fairweather</a> and the National Association of Realtors' Lawrence Yun, who are both economists. Those in the field respect him, from his best friend, the Chicago realtor Garry Vallo, to Phil Crawford of the "Voice of Appraisal" podcast. Friends say celebrities like NBC's beloved weatherman Al Roker and the "Shark Tank" millionaire mogul Barbara Corcoran call on him for his appraisal expertise. "I'm proud that I'm not an economist," Miller, who feels that not being tied to a larger corporation helps him remain objective, said. "When things are bad, I say they're bad. And when things are good, I say they're good. The good means more because I said when things were bad." <h2>It's been a long fight to the top fueled by 'piss and vinegar'</h2>Miller was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1960. He described his dad as a "serial entrepreneur," who worked as a real-estate developer, the owner of the largest McDonald's franchise in the world, and the proprietor of a French cooking school. "I always admired that because the man was not afraid to take on new worlds," Miller said. "His passion was the climb. When he succeeded, he lost interest. It ended up making me a conservative entrepreneur." Miller studied business and hotel management at Michigan State, where he met his future wife and business partner, Cheryl, greasing donut trays in the wee hours of the morning at a campus bakery. After graduation, the couple moved to Chicago. Miller took a job as a realtor at a local Century 21 Realty shop, where he quickly became the No. 2 broker on his team. Vallo, who he met on the job, was No. 1.Even at that time, Miller was a data visionary and computer whiz, Vallo told Insider."When we would do market analysis on a property, I knew at that point that he really knew his information," Vallo said. "He was the one who could analyze the data better than me and the other guys." The young couple visited New York in 1985 and fell in love with the fast pace. They returned to Illinois, quit their jobs, and moved to the Big Apple two weeks later. <div type="image" title="Jonathan and Cheryl Miller at Rockefeller Center" height="480" width="640" msid="96650323" hostid="261" sizebytes="36408"></div>They promptly joined a real-estate company as guides who showed properties to potential buyers or renters. Those early days in New York, Miller's boss said he was "all piss and vinegar" — ambitious, serious, and passionate. He was promoted to sales director just six months into the job.<h2>A database that launched a thousand reports</h2>Data and real-estate obsessed, Miller decided to become an appraiser to close what he saw as a gaping lack of available information about the value of New York City buildings and homes. With sparse listing data and public records, the true value of properties in New York City was opaque. To clear it up, Miller fanatically went to work. His parents gave him, his sister, and his wife the money to start an appraisal company a year and a half after he arrived in NYC. Miller and his sister, channeling their dad and with their parent's support, ran the day-to-day operations at the firm, which they called Miller Samuel, along with their spouses.<div type="image" title="Jonathan Miller speaking at an event." height="2276" width="3036" msid="96650324" hostid="261" sizebytes="210462"></div>Big on tech, Miller Samuel created an innovative real-estate database of property information. Using a Scantron similar to a standardized fill-in-the-dot test form, they gathered data during property inspections that they input into their proprietary software. That data enabled them to broadly assess what made New York City homes valuable. Their early efforts made them the first to quantify how much certain property attributes, such as a view of Central Park or the number of bedrooms in a particular condo building, were worth on the market. Today, Miller Samuel has replaced Scantrons with iPods, iPhones, and a CoreLogic appraisal software called A La Mode. Miller saw the story in the data. He made graphs and charts to visually communicate what the numbers meant.In 1994, Miller struck a deal that made him the unofficial Manhattan real-estate data master. The then-local brokerage Douglas Elliman enlisted him to put together monthly and quarterly rental- and sales-market reports.As Elliman grew to become the <a href="https://www.realtrends.com/articles/2021-realtrends-500-biggest-growth-ever-seen-in-history-of-rankings/">sixth-largest brokerage in the country</a> by transaction volume with 7,000 agents from the Hamptons to California, Miller expanded his scope, too. The Millers settled in the leafy NYC suburb of Darien, Connecticut, and had four boys between 1989 and 1998. They now have two grandchildren and two more on the way. Cheryl is not the face of the business in the way that Miller is, but she's been just as much his partner in business as in life, Vallo said. "If there's ever been somebody that I've met, that has been a match that was made in heaven, it would be Jonathan and Cheryl," Vallo said. "Cheryl is the glue."<h2>The 'king of free' is out to cut through the crap</h2>Miller's profile really grew in the years after the Great Recession. Constantly called upon to make sense of falling home prices, rising foreclosure rates, and how it all happened, the internet was paramount to building his following as he shared thoughts. Today, 8,500 people subscribe to his weekly blog "<a href="https://millersamuel.com/housing-notes/">Housing Notes</a>," which he started writing in 2015. He joined Twitter in 2007, and <a href="https://twitter.com/jonathanmiller">now has 20,500 followers</a> hanging onto his commentary, including industry giants, public figures, reporters, and economists like former President Barack Obama, the swaggering urbanist Richard Florida, and New York City's former head of housing, Vicki Been. Readers of real-estate news around the world have especially appreciated his straight talking.  A part of the <keyword id="6355725" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Tata-Group">Tata group</keyword>, this telecom company has plans to double its women workforce by 2020, and maintain a nearly equal ratio between men and women in the following years.

"We are committed to promoting gender diversity and increasing the number of women employees," said Tripathi. However, as of now, women make up only 9.5% of the telecom company's staff, out of which about 4-5% take maternity leave annually.

Tata Teleservices to offer six-month maternity leave to attract more women to its workforce

In a bid to retain talents employees, <keyword id="6362513" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Startups">startups</keyword> are giving out as much as 150% hike in the salaries in this appraisal season. 
 
Often, startups find it difficult to hire talent and are forced to go to B-schools during recruitment season. 
 
Once hired, they don’t the talented lot to leave the organisation and the startups do anything to retain top performers such as accelerated promotions, sponsored family trips, executive programmes to global B-schools, apart from increments. 
 
As per reports, food tech firm Faasos is planning to give high-potential employees at the junior-mid level 150% increment, compared to 100% last year. 
 
"We are also offering additional incentives in direct proportion to sales (for the sales team) with no upper limit. ESOPs will be offered to top performers," Aditya Adyar, chief people officer at Faasos, told ET. 
 
Likewise, Pronzo also plans to give 100% raise and ESOPs. 
 
Meanwhile, India Inc is expected to give 10.5%-10.6% hike for 2015-16. 
 
"It's still a very competitive scenario when it comes to retaining and attracting key talent and increments are a big talent attractor. Unlike corporates, where there is a much more structured system in place, in startups, you have to pay what top performers demand. It's a business requirement," Anandorup Ghose, rewards consulting practice leader at Aon Hewitt, told ET.

On a larger scale, it also aims to get nearly 25,000 employees onboard in India — including the senior positions. It will look for senior officials with exposure in the technology and startup sectors. Recently, it added Nisheeth Srivastava as Chief technology and innovation officer. In fact, last year, to boost the senior level players, the IT major also initiated quarterly appraisals for its employees in India. Overall, the company has made nearly 11,000 promotions for its employees, he added.
