Ashlee Wisdom left a toxic workplace environment after developing chronic hives.At the time, Wisdom was also getting her master's in public health at New York University, where she was learning about how social and political factors can affect specific groups' health.These experiences led her to build Health In Her HUE, a digital health platform that connects women of color to medical providers committed to serving their health needs."I had my own experience of seeing how racism impacts your health, and I saw all of this innovation happening in healthcare, but I didn't see anyone at that time building anything that addressed the specific pain points that Black women and women of color tend to have when they are navigating the healthcare system," Wisdom told Business Insider.Health In Her HUE is part of a surge in femtech, or technology companies that aim to support women's health and wellness. A report published last year by a consulting company called FemHealth Insights found that the sector was rapidly growing, with over 60% of femtech companies founded from 2017 to 2022.Historically, women's healthcare has been impaired by challenges like bias and a lack of specialized providers. But femtech offers a new way forward — one where connecting with a doctor doesn't require an in-person appointment and female founders are creating digital spaces that mirror the care they want to receive.<h2>Connectivity to close the women's health gap</h2>Increased access to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5g-advanced-standalone-6g-qualcomm-huawei-mwc-2024-3">high-speed internet</a>, the expansion of telemedicine, and demand for women-centric healthcare are some factors behind the recent support for femtech platforms and apps."In 2020, because we were left with no alternative, there was a massive increase in online services, which created a culture shift for providers and clients," said Smisha Agarwal, the executive director of the Center for Global Digital Health Innovation at Johns Hopkins University.As a result, the US healthcare sector became less resistant to remote tools like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/teledermatology-future-of-skincare-musely-ceo-jack-jia-2024-6">telehealth</a> and medical apps, and patients realized they enjoyed the relative privacy of talking with a provider in their home rather than at a clinic. "These tools can change the power dynamic in a clinical relationship," Agarwal said.Health In Her HUE says nearly 14,000 women have accounts and use the website to access medical information tailored specifically to women of color; virtual peer-support groups; and medical professionals who deliver healthcare in a way that meets patients' social, cultural, and linguistic needs.Black women often confront <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/women-crossing-state-lines-give-birth-black-maternal-mortality-crisis-2023-9">greater difficulties</a> in accessing affordable and quality healthcare, are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8020496/">disproportionately burdened</a> by chronic conditions, and are more likely to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-doctors-and-community-groups-are-promoting-health-equity-2023-11">experience discrimination</a> in medical settings. "I wanted to build a platform that helps Black women, and women of color more broadly, navigate healthcare and a system that is too often precarious for us," Wisdom said.<div type="image" title="A headshot of Ashlee Wisdom on a tan background." height="810" width="1080" msid="113135183" hostid="261" sizebytes="46492"></div>Through the platform, users can look up providers by the insurance they take, their specialties, and their ZIP code, and then meet with them in person or virtually, depending on the provider.In the beginning, Wisdom reached out to providers who seemed aligned with her mission and asked if they would participate in the project. Now providers looking to join can make an account, and once they commit to the company's health-equity pledge, they're added to the directory.Wisdom said one Health In Her HUE user who felt that other doctors had ignored her symptoms got a diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome after meeting with a Health In Her HUE provider. Another told Wisdom that she drove three hours to meet with a gastroenterologist she found in the directory; she felt that "if a Black GI doctor saw her, they would take her symptoms more seriously," Wisdom said.For years, healthcare systems weren't <a target="_blank" href="https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2023/01/women-health-gap-davos-2023/">designed for women</a>, and there are still gaps in research and treatments for women's health issues. A study published in the Journal of Women's Health in 2021 found that funding from the US National Institutes of Health was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/full/10.1089/jwh.2020.8682">more likely to go toward conditions</a> that primarily affect men and less likely to go toward conditions that disproportionately affect women, like migraines and endometriosis.With this reality in mind, Joanna Strober cofounded Midi Health, a website designed to help people experiencing menopause and perimenopause access specialists. Described as a virtual care clinic, Midi Health allows people to make telehealth appointments with licensed nurse practitioners and doctors specializing in women's midlife health. Strober told BI she started the company after encountering barriers to finding menopause care."I also realized that the only way to scale this and give access to all women was to do it virtually," Strober said. "It's about connecting women to excellent care regardless of where they live."During a virtual appointment, patients can discuss perimenopause and menopause symptoms like hot flashes and brain fog. Interventions can range from lifestyle coaching to prescription medication, and Midi providers can refer patients to in-person treatments when needed. Some insurance plans cover care if the providers are in-network with PPO plans. Strober is focused on scaling insurance coverage so more women can use Midi.Strober said that as of August, about 100,000 women had used Midi in 2024. Most are between 40 and 50, and the average age is 46."It's growing really fast, and women are coming to us in increasing numbers for more issues than we originally expected," Strober said. She added that while Midi isn't intended to be a primary-care clinic, users' interest in speaking with providers about more than hormonal health demonstrates that "there are just not enough providers who are trained in women-centered care."Strober attributed an increased desire for digital platforms like Midi to improvements in telehealth technology and to women's demands for better care. The relative ease of virtual appointments is also a benefit.<h2>Investing in solutions</h2>A report by Silicon Valley Bank published last year said <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.svb.com/trends-insights/reports/womens-health-report/">venture-capital funding for women's health companies</a> had surged by 314% since 2018.But Strober believes that the industry has just taken off and that founders must convince investors that more money can be made. Midi Health is on its way toward doing that; the company closed a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/midi-health-raising-series-b-menopause-2024-1">$60 million Series B round</a> in April.Agarwal said that as more companies enter the healthcare industry, they'll need to consider patient needs beyond health, such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-hospitals-dont-have-policies-for-new-ai-tech-survey-2024-2">privacy</a>. She argued that minimizing data collection and communicating about data use are imperative."Digital solutions do not replace in-person services, but they are a brilliant addition to in-person care," Agarwal added.Wisdom acknowledged that virtual care isn't a cure-all and told BI that while Health In Her HUE's main goal is connecting women of color to culturally responsive clinicians, she hopes for a future where all providers offer that level of care."We don't want Black patients always to feel like they need to be seen by a Black healthcare provider," Wisdom said. "They should feel comfortable and confident knowing that any provider they engage with can provide them with high-quality care."But for now, Wisdom said, virtual care can be a path toward accessibility. Health In Her HUE raised <a target="_blank" href="https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/08/health-in-her-hue-closes-3-million-seed-round/">$3 million in a seed round</a> in January, and Wisdom and her team are hopeful about features they can build to create a space where users know they're getting accurate information from medical providers who understand their experiences. Wisdom and her team plan to create an app and possibly partner with a telehealth company to offer virtual appointments."It feels good to build a solution that's useful for my community," Wisdom said. "I'm glad my energy is being used for a mission that deeply resonates with me."

The demand for office spaces during the first quarter of 2024 has been strong, registering total leasing of 13.6 million square feet across the top six cities. It is a remarkable 35 per cent increase compared to the same period last year, according to professional services and investment management company Colliers. Although this is a significant drop from the record office space take-up in the last quarter of 2023, the remarkable annual increase is indicative of upbeat occupier sentiment, given the fact that the first quarter is typically slower, Colliers said in a report. The office market of Hyderabad saw 2.2x space uptake in Q1 2024 as compared to the corresponding quarter last year. This demand was driven by healthcare and pharma and technology sectors. Amongst other major office markets, Mumbai too experienced a notable surge in leasing activity, an impressive 90 per cent yearly rise in Q1 2024. "Hyderabad continues to strengthen its role as a prominent commercial office market in the country. HMS helps hospitals manage their information like clinical data, inventory, patient information and financials, and integrate all of it across departments. Also, Insta’s own SaaS transition will render it with benefits and also the clients it serves. Insta says its new SaaS-powered system will enable the hospitals – its clients – to improve operational efficiency by 20-25% with minimal revenue leakage. “The India market is ripe for SaaS. It provides the much-needed agility that healthcare players are looking for, thus, giving us the confidence of further expansion in a shorter period of time,” said Abhinav <keyword id="3268" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lal" source="Orion">Lal</keyword>, co-founder and chief technology officer, Practo. Scalability &amp; cost-efficiency The company has ambitious growth plans ahead – to grow the number of its clients by 25%. The SaaS model will provide it with scalability. The company said that the SaaS transition will also provide more value to its partner clinics and hospitals in addition to flexibility. More importantly, the new system will make it more cost-effective, and it can be passed on to its clients. “With this move, the company aims to improve its integration, enabling timely upgrades and greater ease of use, at four times reduction in costs as compared to conventional IT infrastructure,” Insta said in a statement. ‘Helps anticipate revenues &amp; shorten sales lifecycle’ Since it was acquired in 2015 by Practo, Insta grew its business by 368%. It has been clocking 25-30% revenue growth year-on-year, for the last two to three years. “While our consumer business continues to grow, our B2B business is turning profitable. Practo’s Insta says its SaaS transition will help reduce costs by 4x

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Big businesses such as hospital systems, insurers, and PE firms are gobbling up medical clinics.</li><li>Some doctors and industry experts fear corporate owners could prioritize profits ahead of patients.</li></ul>Independent doctors are almost a thing of the past.UnitedHealth Group struck a deal in March to buy the nine-state doctor group of the struggling hospital system Steward Health Care. The same month, the powerful healthcare conglomerate, which owns the nation's largest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-medical-patients-affected-unitedhealthcare-mount-sinai-dispute-2024-3">health insurer</a>, got the green light to take over a decades-old independent Oregon <a target="_blank" href="https://www.oregonlive.com/business/2024/03/oregon-health-officials-give-emergency-ok-to-corvallis-clinics-acquisition-by-insurance-giant-unitedhealth-group.html">medical practice</a>, adding another 100 healthcare providers to its roster. It picked up a 400-doctor <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fiercehealthcare.com/payers/unitedhealth-quietly-scoops-new-york-physician-group-crystal-run">group</a> in New York about a year before.These are just the purchases we know about; there could be many more. Physician practice deals often go unannounced and get little attention from regulators, but they add up. Near the end of 2023, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/optumhealth-ceo-plans-to-make-clinics-a-100-billion-business-2021-4">UnitedHealth's Optum</a>, the business unit housing its clinics and surgery centers, said it employed or was affiliated with 90,000 doctors. That's a whopping 10% of all doctors in the US.Though it's the hungriest, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/optumhealth-ceo-plans-to-make-clinics-a-100-billion-business-2021-4">UnitedHealth</a> is just one buyer in the market for physicians. Little by little, big businesses have taken over healthcare in the US. Hospitals have been scooping up medical practices for decades to create giant health systems. Insurance companies fought back with their own clinic purchases. Private equity firms increasingly staked claims to nursing homes and groups of specialists such as emergency physicians and dermatologists.And in the last few years, tech companies and retailers like Amazon, CVS Health, and Walgreens added thousands of doctors to their payrolls when they bought <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cvs-walgreens-amazon-primary-care-acquisition-strategy-2024-3">primary-care chains</a>.Nearly 78% of US doctors are employed by hospitals or other corporate entities, such as insurers and PE firms, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.physiciansadvocacyinstitute.org/PAI-Research/PAI-Avalere-Study-on-Physician-Employment-Practice-Ownership-Trends-2019-2023">research</a> from consultancy Avalere and the Physicians Advocacy Institute. For the first time, more medical practices were owned by corporate entities (30%) than hospitals (28%) as of January 2024, the research found.There's mounting evidence that this trend toward corporatization could harm patients. Research has found that prices go up when hospitals and private-equity firms buy medical groups. Sometimes, care gets <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nber.org/papers/w30928">worse</a>, but there's still much unknown about how corporate ownership affects medical care, especially when it's a giant like UnitedHealth or CVS doing the buying.Some doctors and experts in the industry fear corporate owners could prioritize their investors and profits ahead of patients, and doctors could lose the ability to make their own decisions about what's best for a patient."The big guys aren't cheaper. They don't deliver better customer service, they aren't more timely, none of that. They're just able to negotiate higher prices," said Farzad Mostashari, the CEO of Aledade, a company that aims to help primary care practices stay independent.The federal government is starting to pay attention. In March, it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/03/federal-trade-commission-department-justice-department-health-human-services-launch-cross-government">launched</a> an inquiry into PE firms and other corporate owners' "increasing control over healthcare" and how this might threaten patients' access to affordable and quality care.The feds also zeroed in on UnitedHealth, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/health/healthcare/u-s-launches-antitrust-investigation-of-healthcare-giant-unitedhealth-ff5a00d2">reportedly</a> facing an antitrust investigation by the US Justice Department into how its medical group acquisitions affect consumers and competitors. News of the probe surfaced before a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/change-healthcare-cyberattack-small-mental-health-practices-payments-money-2024-3">cyberattack on UnitedHealth's</a> technology business, Change Healthcare, caused hospitals and clinics nationwide to forgo billions in payments — raising more questions about UnitedHealth's chokehold on the healthcare industry.<h2>Doctors are hot commodities</h2>It's tough to lump the many buyers of medical practices together, as they're pursuing different strategies. But, in essence, they're all hiring doctors for their relationships with patients, who bring opportunities for more profits. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-millennials-giving-up-medical-care-cant-afford-costs-2024-2">US healthcare spending</a> reached $4.5 trillion in 2022, representing almost a fifth of the national GDP.Hospitals rely on doctors — especially those who provide primary care — to refer patients for lucrative procedures or surgeries. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/unitedhealth-stock-exec-medical-costs-rising-2023-6">Insurers like UnitedHealthcare</a> and CVS' Aetna are required by federal law to spend most of the money they collect in premiums on medical care. Still, they can pocket more of those premiums by sending patients to clinics they own.Pharmacies hope that buying medical practices will give more prescriptions to fill and get more customers to buy over-the-counter products at the front of the store."They all realize that patients will follow what their doctors tell them to do or where their doctors tell them to go," said Chas Roades, a longtime healthcare consultant. "So it allows them to both drive traffic to a downstream profit model that they're interested in growing, and I think it also is a way to get consumers to trust them."Meanwhile, independent doctors have a tough time going it alone. Reimbursement is shrinking, and small practices don't have the ability to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/2022-prp-practice-arrangement.pdf">negotiate higher rates</a> as big hospital systems do. Plus, running a modern medical practice is expensive, requiring investments in staffing, technology, and electronic health records. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-chatbots-tech-doctors-medicine-healthcare-system-empathy-quality-email-2023-6">The pandemic</a> made things even more challenging, spurring many doctors to sell their private practices.<h2>The quiet takeover of physician practices</h2>Much of the takeover of physician practices has slid under the radar. That's because acquisitions valued below <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ftc.gov/enforcement/competition-matters/2024/02/new-hsr-thresholds-filing-fees-2024">$119.5 million</a> don't have to be reported to federal regulators, and many practice purchases don't meet that threshold. Publicly traded UnitedHealth, for instance, rarely announces its purchases of medical groups and surgery centers."We're really flying blind here with respect to understanding how many acquisitions by which entities and what geographies and what specialties," said Yashaswini Singh, an assistant professor at Brown University who studies healthcare consolidation.This lack of disclosure has made consolidating doctor practices difficult to study. Research into private equity's effects on healthcare is just emerging, and there's little to no academic, peer-reviewed research on how other corporate owners' acquisitions affect healthcare prices and quality, Singh said.Studies, including Singh's <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama-health-forum/fullarticle/2795946">research</a>, have shown, however, that PE ownership leads to steeper prices and more utilization, meaning patients may have more frequent doctor's appointments. Together, that drives healthcare costs higher. Research also suggests that PE ownership of nursing homes and hospitals <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/article-abstract/2813379?guestAccessKey=e0cef9be-d55c-4bcf-8892-412af8f24355&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=122623">worsens the quality</a> of care. One <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w28474/w28474.pdf">paper</a> found that patients who went to nursing homes owned by private equity firms had a 10% greater chance of dying.And yet, private equity companies are rapidly expanding their presence in healthcare. A 2023 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.antitrustinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/AAI-UCB-EG_Private-Equity-I-Physician-Practice-Report_FINAL.pdf">study</a> found that one private equity firm owned 30% of the market share for physician practices in over a quarter of metropolitan areas across the US. A single PE firm owned over half the market share in some areas.<h2>'An unsatisfying way of practicing medicine'</h2>Acquisitions by other corporate giants might not produce the same outcomes as PE firms, said Zirui Song, an associate professor of healthcare policy and medicine at Harvard Medical School who studies private equity in healthcare. PE firms are unique in holding on to their acquisitions for only a few years and saddling their acquired companies with debt and fees. Owners who hang on to their medical groups might be more motivated to improve services, he said.Anecdotally, though, many doctors don't like working for corporate overlords, Roades said. Older physicians who own equity in their medical practice get a nice payday when they sell, but the younger ones left behind are closely managed and measured in terms of cost and productivity, he added.It's "an unsatisfying way of practicing medicine. We're seeing a growing number of disgruntled early and mid-career physicians in these groups who find themselves suddenly working for large corporations, and this is not what they wanted to do with their lives," he said.After a few years working at Optum-owned Oregon Medical Group, Dr. Nick Jones opened a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/direct-primary-care-a-no-insurance-healthcare-model-2017-3">direct primary care practice</a>, a type of clinic that charges a monthly fee instead of billing insurance. He said there's a sense of powerlessness for primary-care doctors in the traditional healthcare system — whether they're employed by Optum, a large hospital system, a private-equity firm, or a nonprofit clinic.With thousands of patients to treat, they face a mountain of administrative paperwork and have no control over their schedules. These problems stem from the fact that primary-care doctors are <a target="_blank" href="https://kffhealthnews.org/news/article/compensation-pay-primary-care-shortage-solution/">underpaid</a> in the traditional "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/newsletter-article/moving-health-care-system-away-fee-service">fee-for-service</a>" healthcare system, in which doctors are paid for every visit, he said.While he felt supported at his previous Optum-owned clinic because of his office manager, "the financial underpinnings and the economics of medicine" made it unsustainable and stressful, Jones said. "There was a three or four month wait for patients to see me. There was still too much on our plate to do, and [during the pandemic] there weren't enough medical assistants or case managers or nutritionists or other support to make 20 patients a day feel like the right thing to do."<h2>Doctors worry corporate giants put profits over patients</h2>The insurers and retailers say care is better and cheaper when integrated under one roof, connected to the health plan, pharmacy, or other provider organizations.For its part, Optum says it wants to improve the health and well-being of people and lower the cost of care with integrated care teams and better technology. It says it's helping clinics transition to providing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/optumhealth-ceo-plans-to-make-clinics-a-100-billion-business-2021-4">"value-based"</a> or "accountable" care, which means that its doctors get paid fixed fees upfront that, in theory, encourages them to keep patients healthy and order fewer unnecessary tests.Optum said in a statement it continues "to focus on supporting physicians, advance practice clinicians, and nurses in closing gaps in care and helping the health system perform better for everyone."A spokesperson pointed to a <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2799376">study</a> by Optum published in JAMA Network Open in December 2022 that found seniors in value-based care arrangements were less likely than seniors in traditional payment models to visit the emergency room, or be admitted at the hospital for COPD, asthma, stroke, or heart attack.But there are potential dangers. Patients may end up with fewer choices as bigger companies edge out competitors.California health system Emanate Health sued Optum in 2023 for anticompetitive behavior. It alleged that Optum canceled its contracts with Emanate hospitals and steered patients away after Emanate refused to agree to certain terms. Among the terms: Emanate primary-care doctors would serve only Optum patients, and Optum would get first dibs if Emanate decided to sell its primary-care practices.Care might also feel less personal. Some <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/one-medical-patients-affected-unitedhealthcare-mount-sinai-dispute-2024-3">One Medical patients</a> complained that since the chain folded into Amazon, their appointments were shortened, and certain features for seniors, like having health coaches available during patient visits, went away, according to a report from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2024/02/28/amazon-health-one-medical/">The Washington Post</a>.<h2>Patients could end up spending less time with doctors and face higher costs</h2>Dr. Mitch Li, an emergency physician who started Take Medicine Back, a group that opposes corporate owners pushing into healthcare, said patients will spend less time with their doctors and potentially face higher costs from predatory billing practices."The corporate practice of medicine is the reason why <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-millennials-giving-up-medical-care-cant-afford-costs-2024-2">healthcare costs</a> are out of control," Li said.Above all, some doctors fear having to make decisions that benefit the owner's bottom line, even though they may not be the best option for a patient.Dr. Michelle Cooke, a primary-care physician, previously practiced at an Atlanta clinic owned by a hospital system. Though the system was not-for-profit, it didn't operate like that, and over time, the job became unbearable, she said.She had more than 3,000 patients assigned to her care — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jabfm.org/content/jabfp/29/4/496.full.pdf">far more</a> than typical — and appointments were too short, especially for the chronically ill, she said. The hospital system would prioritize lucrative physicals for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cigna-selling-medicare-advantage-business-insurers-higher-costs-slower-growth-2024-2">Medicare patients</a> rather than seeing patients with an urgent need."It really got to the point where I feel like I was working to feed the corporation," Cooke said. "It really wasn't incentivizing what the patients needed."Cooke has since opened a direct primary care practice, where she sees just a few hundred patients and can spend more time with them. She said she's found that she prescribes less medication now because she has time to educate patients on lifestyle habits and nutrition.<h2>The federal government and states are dialing up the scrutiny</h2>The Federal Trade Commission, the US Department of Justice, and the Department of Health and Human Services are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/federal-agencies-probe-private-equity-profiteering-in-healthcare-2ba4c23a">stepping up scrutiny</a> of healthcare deals, particularly those backed by private-equity firms. The agencies also signaled that they want to look at smaller deals that typically wouldn't trigger an antitrust review.Several states have also increased their oversight of local healthcare consolidation. Some state lawmakers are also trying to strengthen <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMp2306904#f1">laws prohibiting</a> corporations from practicing medicine. Most states have these bans on the books, but companies have found various ways around them.It's unclear if any of these efforts will meaningfully slow the corporatization of healthcare. And, to be sure, some physician practices may not have survived without an infusion of capital from a corporate buyer.A bill introduced by Oregon State Rep. Ben Bowman would have closed certain <a target="_blank" href="https://www.opb.org/article/2024/02/22/oregon-lawmakers-could-limit-corporate-ownership-of-medical-practices/">loopholes</a> and put more distance between corporate entities and their medical practices. Bowman told Business Insider he wanted to prevent big businesses from eroding doctors' autonomy."A physician who went to medical school who took an oath — their highest ethical duty is to care for their patients. Whether it's a private equity firm or a large corporation, their highest ethical duty is to generate a return on investment for their shareholders. Those two incentives are fundamentally at odds," Bowman said.The bill, opposed by Amazon and CVS, died in March, but Bowman said he plans to reintroduce it in 2025.Around the same time the bill died, UnitedHealth's Optum and The Corvallis Clinic — the small Oregon medical practice that Optum struck a deal to buy — requested that their tie-up receive an emergency exemption from state review because of the Oregon clinic's deteriorating finances.The proposed acquisition, first announced in December, had received plenty of pushback from state residents. The request also came as hospitals and clinics nationwide faced cash shortfalls because of the cyberattack on UnitedHealth's Change Healthcare.A week later, Oregon's health authority approved the request.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Criminal gangs are helping students cheat on exams in India, according to The Wall Street Journal.</li><li>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam.</li></ul>India's massive examination machine is floundering.This year, the country's primary testing body — the National Testing Agency (NTA) — has faced a series of controversies.They range from exam delays and cancellations to more serious allegations of errors in questions and leaked papers.While NTA officials have denied that any exam papers were leaked the federal education minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, told the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cv22wl82yldo">BBC</a> in June that "some irregularities" had been found.Now, it seems some are taking advantage of the examination chaos.According to the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/world/india/gangs-are-making-millions-helping-indians-cheat-on-exams-32500cce">Wall Street Journal, some middle-class families are paying criminal gangs thousands </a>to help their children get the upper hand on these exams.<h2 id="5266815a-7004-480f-a5ba-395977759d6c">Cheating in India's medical entrance exam</h2>Cheating has, in particular, plagued India's highly competitive medical entrance exam, also known as the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).This year, around 2.4 million students in India took the exam, competing for medical college seats totaling about 0.02% of that number."Very few people crack it on the first try," one student, who asked not to be named for privacy reasons, told Business Insider.She spent a year preparing for the undergraduate and postgraduate exams, respectively. During this time, she woke up at 4 a.m. and studied for at least 10-12 hours each day.Some prefer to take an easier route.The Journal found that several students had paid $15,000-20,000 to illegally look at the question paper before the exam. BI could not independently verify the figures.The police made multiple arrests related to exam cheating after results showed that 67 people received perfect scores in the NEET exams this year."Question papers are sold at extravagantly high prices," Ashok Rathore, a police officer who investigated cheating linked to India's medical school exam, told the Journal. "It's a nexus of desperate students, parents, tuition centers and printing presses."<h2 id="378edaf6-be36-458e-8847-661e66638c81">Leaked questions</h2>One student told BI that several Telegram channels dedicated to exam prep saw messages encouraging students "struggling with exams and don't have time for studies" to get in touch for "help.""My friend said he was asked to pay around 15,000 rupees ($180) to enter the private channel where they shared the questions," she said.BI reached out to the Telegram account offering "help". The person said they can provide next year's medical entrance exam questions for around 1 lakh rupees ($1,200).High ranks in these exams mean coveted "seats" in medical colleges operated by the state and national governments. Those with money can still legally obtain places in private medical colleges if they pay fees ranging from $115,000 to $145,000.However, some students with the financial capacity prefer cheating and getting a government seat instead."It makes very good economic sense," a senior medical advisor with knowledge of the matter told BI. "The question paper will be given for about 25 lakh rupees (around $29,000). For that much, they get a free seat in a government college where they only have to pay around 16,000 rupees ($190) per annum.""For the entire five-year degree, that still only comes to around one lakh rupees ($1191), so of course rich students would rather do that instead of paying their way into private medical schools."<h2 id="4ff61c3d-756d-47c9-8f47-2f6be9f1f6a0">Earning a 'merit' seat</h2>The advisor — who preferred to remain anonymous but whose identity is known to BI — also said there is a significant amount of respect that comes with having "earned" a merit seat instead of paying their way into a private "management" seat."Unfortunately, there are very few objective metrics that people have as outsiders to judge the competence of their doctors, especially at a time when everybody in India sits with an MBBS board outside their clinic," agreed Asish George, a doctor who cleared the entrance exam in 2014."For those people, the fact that someone cracked a highly competitive entrance exam and got in would inspire more confidence than someone who paid their way through the whole thing."According to the Journal, authorities in India have tried to install video cameras inside exam halls and increased their monitoring of social media to catch cheaters. But many are still finding ways to illegally gain the upper hand, at a high price. The NTA did not immediately respond to a request by BI for comment.

LinkedIn's research also reveals that an impressive 98% of Indian professionals are enthusiastic about incorporating AI into their work. Domestic companies have been responsible for nearly 47 per cent of office leasing activity from 2022 to H1 2024, marking a departure from the traditional dominance of global corporations, particularly American firms. During 2022-2023, domestic firms experienced a 60 per cent surge in office space absorption compared to the pre-pandemic period of 2018-2019. These programs, along with increased domestic manufacturing, employment generation, and a well-capitalized banking sector, have created a supportive environment for business expansion. Other contributing factors include low corporate leverage ratios and improved access to capital, which have enhanced the investment capacity of Indian companies. India's talent pool, with approximately 2.5 million STEM graduates and a thriving start-up ecosystem featuring over 100 unicorns, has also been a major driver of growth. With over 38 sector skill councils, the government's focus on bridging the skill gap is preparing domestic firms for future demands, further bolstering the office leasing sector. Flexible space operators, technology, and BFSI sectors have emerged as the primary drivers of office leasing, collectively accounting for two-thirds of all domestic activity. The RCA sector, which includes legal, taxation, HR, and media services, is also playing a significant role in boosting domestic leasing.
