‘Ghar ki murgi dal barabar’- the age old adage is getting proved quite literally now. With the price of the lentils skyrocketing each day, ex-mill and wholesale prices of tur <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=dal">dal</a> increased further by about 18% in a week in Maharashtra. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=price">price</a> has absurdly increased from Rs 167/kg for the best variety to Rs 194/kg. 
 
While the government is relying on imports to check the matter just like onions, local traders say this would never going to happen. The shortages are huge, government imports are meagre and local crop will come only in December, keeping tur dal prices exorbitantly high till Diwali. 
 
The desi tur is expensive than the imported African tur by about Rs 20/kg to Rs 30/kg in wholesale. With this, the wholesale prices in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Maharashtra+">Maharashtra</a> have crossed Rs 190/kg, which will translate into retail prices of Rs 200/kg to Rs 220/kg in a few days. In fact, trade sources also think that prices can also touch Rs 250/kg by Diwali if the government intervention is not effective. 
 
The shortage is so high that the mills are running at about just 25% of their capacity. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Governmen">Governmen</a>t has imported about 5,000 tonne dal and another 2000 tonne is on the way, as per a news report by The Economic Times. 
 
The Indian <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=tur+dal">local tur crop</a> will come on by December, while the industry expects the production to fall due to the deficient rains in the growing regions. Though the central government has asked the states to include dals in the essential commodities act, very few states have done so.

New Delhi, Feb 12 () <keyword id="513422" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Retail-inflation">Retail inflation</keyword> jumped to over five-and-a-half-year high of 7.59 per cent in January on persistently high prices of vegetables, pulses and protein-rich meat and fish, government data showed on Wednesday. The <keyword id="134096" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="consumer-price-index">Consumer Price Index</keyword> (CPI)-based inflation was 7.35 per cent in December 2019. It had stood at 1.97 per cent in January 2019. The earlier high was in May 2014 when the CPI-based inflation was 8.33 per cent. The overall food inflation during January this year stood at 13.63 per cent, slightly lower than 14.19 per cent in the previous month, showed the data released by the National Statistical Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. Food inflation, however, had contracted in January 2019 with a print of (-)2.24 per cent. Inflation in vegetables spurt to 50.19 per cent in January this year, while that for pulses and products, it rose to 16.71 per cent. Among protein-rich items, prices of meat and fish went up by 10.50 per cent during the month, while egg prices were higher by 10.41 per cent against the year-ago period. The food and beverages category showed an inflation print of 11.79 per cent, according to the data. Housing turned costlier by 4.20 per cent in January 2020, while for fuel and light, the inflation print was 3.66 per cent. "The internals of the food inflation are worrying, given a broad-based uptick across categories that tend to be sticky, such as proteins, and a narrower-than-expected reduction in inflation for vegetables. "Moreover, the fairly broad-based rise in the core inflation to 4.1 per cent in January 2020, driven by various services, is a cause for concern," said Aditi Nayar, principal economist, ICRA. Nayar added that regardless of the level of retail inflation, the stance of the RBI for the monetary policy is likely to be retained as accommodative, for as long as the MPC considers the output gap to be negative. "The timing and magnitude of the next rate cut will depend on how quickly inflation appears to be reverting back towards 4 per cent." Rahul Gupta, head of research (currency), Emkay Global Financial Services, said, "It is the consecutive second month that the CPI has breached upper band of the RBI's inflation target... if inflation continues to hover above 6 per cent, we don't expect the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) to cut interest rate or change its accommodative policy stance," said. Retail inflation jumps to nearly six-year high as everything from vegetables to pulses to meat and fish get expensive

New Delhi, Dec 18 () The government on Wednesday decided to offload 8.47 lakh tonne of pulses from its buffer stock and will sell foodgrain to states at market price to boost domestic availability and ensure stability in prices.
 The average prices of pulses are ruling at Rs 60-95 per kg in major cities, but maximum rate of urad is as high as Rs 140 per kg in some parts of India.
 "The Department of Consumer Affairs that maintains buffer stock of pulses for the Union government under the Price Stabilisation Mechanism has offered about 8.5 lakh tonne of pulses to state governments at average market rates," an official statement said.
 The decision in this regard was taken during a meeting chaired by Consumer Affairs Secretary Avinash Srivastava to review prices and availability of pulses across the nation.
 "The purpose is to ensure an increased overall availability of pulses in the market across India and also to ensure that prices remain stable," the statement said.
 The Centre has offered 3.2 lakh tonne of tur (arhar), 2 lakh tonne of urad, 1.2 lakh tonne of chana, 1.5 lakh tonne of moong and 57,000 tonne of masoor.
 According to the ministry data, the average price of chana is ruling at Rs 65 per kg, tur Rs 85 per kg, urad Rs 95 per kg, moong Rs 85 per kg and masoor Rs 60 per kg across major cities. However, the maximum rate of chana is Rs 88, tur Rs 110, urad Rs 140, moong Rs 120 and masoor Rs 100 per kg.
 Commenting on the government's decision, India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) Chairman Jitu Bheda said: "While IPGA welcomes this deliberation, only stocks of urad which is selling above MSP (minimum support price) should be released from the buffer stock. All other pulses are selling below MSP and therefore buffer stocks of these should not be liquidated."

Centre to offload 8.47 lakh tonne pulses from buffer stock to boost supply, control prices

New Delhi, May 10 () Cooperative Nafed is procuring pulses and oilseeds from farmers at support price during the current lockdown, the government said on Sunday. "2.74 Lakh tonnes gram (chana) has been procured from 9 states namely Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana," the agriculture ministry said in a statement.That apart, Nafed has bought 3.40 lakh tonnes of mustard from 5 states - Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana. Around 1,700 tonnes of sunflower has been procured from Telangana.In pulses, 1.71 lakh tonnes toor (arhar) has been procured from 8 states - Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Odisha.The Union Agriculture Ministry said it is taking several measures to facilitate farmers and farming activities at field level during the lockdown.Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar is regularly monitoring the situation.Food Corporation of India (FCI) is the government's nodal agency for procurement and distribution of foodgrains. It mainly purchases wheat and paddy from farmers at the minimum support price (MSP) for maintaining the central buffer stock.Nafed procures pulses and oilseeds from farmers on behalf of the government.Regarding sowing area coverage of summer crops, the ministry said that paddy has been sown in about 34.87 lakh hectare area as compared to 25.29 lakh hectare during the corresponding period previous year.About 10.35 lakh hectare area has been sown under pulses as compared to 5.92 lakh hectare during the same period last year.The area under coverage for coarse cereals rose to about 9.57 lakh hectare as against 6.20 lakh hectare.Sowing of oilseeds has been completed in about 9.17 lakh hectare area from 7.09 lakh hectare. Nafed procures pulses, oilseeds at support price amid lockdown

New Delhi, Jan 19 () The government plans to extend urad dal imports of up to 4,00,000 tonnes a fiscal for another three months till June this year in view of likely domestic shortages, according to sources.
 The Indian Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) has demanded the government for removal of quantitative curbs on urad as the country is likely to face a shortage of about 50 per cent in production this year on account of damage to the 2019 kharif crop.
 Last month, the commerce ministry had raised the quota of urad import from 1.5 lakh tonnes to 4 lakh tonnes for the fiscal ending March 2020. Import was allowed to be undertaken only by millers and refiners.
 According to sources, "So far, only 2 lakh tonnes of urad has been imported. The pulses situation was reviewed recently by the concerned ministeries and a consensus has emerged to give time till June for undertaking the import of rest of the quota."
 IPGA Vice Chairman Bimal Kothari had recently said the country produces about 25-30 lakh tonnes of urad dal a year. There could be 50 per cent fall in output because of severe damage to the kharif crop.
 "To meet the domestic demand, the government should remove quantitative restrictions on urad and allow free shipments," he had said.
 Meanwhile, the government has decided to offload 5 lakh tonne pulses from its buffer stock to both state governments as well as in the open market.
 Sources said about 1 lakh tonnes of pulses will be sold to state governments at not less than minimum support price (MSP) under the Price Support Scheme (PSS).
 Another one lakh tonne of pulses, especially milled pulses will be offloaded in the open market at above MSP level under the Price Stabailisation Fund (PSF), the source added.
 The state governments are expected to lift more pulses from the buffer stock in the coming days as prices of some pulses are on rise.
 Cooperative NAFED is also planning to sell pulses from the buffer stock to institutional buyers like hotels and big retail stores, the sources added.
 The country has imported 21.4 lakh tonnes of pulses during April-November of this fiscal and total shipments are expected to touch 30 lakh tonnes at the end of this fiscal.
 India's dependence on pulses import is reducing as domestic production has been increasing in the last few years on account of government measures.
 Pulses production has improved to the level of 230 lakh tonne since 2016-17 from 160-180 lakh tonnes level. However, the production is still short of the annual demand of 250 lakh tonne. LUX MKJ

Govt plans to extend urad imports till June on likely domestic shortage: Sources

New Delhi, Jan 31 () Consumer price inflation has been witnessing moderation since 2014, however, there has been an "uptick" in the prices of food items, particularly vegetables, owing to output disruptions and low base effect, the Economic Survey said on Friday.
 The Survey has recommended measures to safeguard farmers through procurement under Price Stabilization Fund to help regulate the price volatility of important agri-horticultural commodities and also added that Minimum Support Price (MSP) needs to be made more effective.
 The Economic Survey 2019-20, presented in Parliament by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that inflation has been witnessing moderation since 2014, however, recently there has been an "uptick".
 It pointed out that the major driver of consumer price or the retail inflation was on account of articles under the 'miscellaneous group' in 2018-19, and for the current financial year so far, food and beverages emerged as the main contributor to retail inflation.
 "Among food and beverages, inflation in vegetables and pulses was particularly very high, mainly driven by low base effect and production side disruptions due to untimely rain," observed the Survey.
 The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation has increased to 4.1 per cent during April-December period of the current fiscal, as against 3.7 per cent in the same period of the previous fiscal.
 On the other hand, the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation fell to 1.5 per cent during the period under consideration from 4.7 per cent in the year-ago period.

New Delhi, Dec 12 () Retail inflation spiked to a more than three-year high of 5.54 per cent in November due to costlier food products like vegetables, pulses and protein-rich items.
 The previous high was in July 2016, when the consumer price index-based inflation stood at 6.07 per cent. Retail inflation was 4.62 per cent in October, and 2.33 per cent in November 2018.
 According to the data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO), inflation in the food basket jumped to 10.01 per cent. This compares with 7.89 per cent October and (-) 2.61 per cent in the year ago-month.
 During the month, inflation in vegetables shot up to 35.99 per cent, as against 26.10 per cent in October.
 Likewise, the prices of cereals and eggs grew at a faster pace of 3.71 per cent. Prices of meat and fish rose by 9.38 per cent annually and of eggs by 6.2 per cent in November.
 Prices of pulses and related products jumped 13.94 per cent during the month.
 In the fuel and light category, prices dropped by 1.93 per cent.
 The Reserve Bank of India has been mandated by the government to contain inflation in the range of 4 per cent, with a margin of 2 per cent on either side.
 ICRA Principal Economist Aditi Nayar said that moderation in vegetable prices should douse food inflation to a large extent in early 2020, and healthy groundwater and reservoir levels bode well for rabi output and yields of various cereals.
 However, the year-on-year decline in the area sown under rabi pulses and oilseeds poses a concern, given the high inflation being recorded by some of these items.
 "ICRA expects the CPI inflation to spike further to 5.8-6 per cent in December 2019, close to the upper threshold of the MPC's medium-term target, driven by the recent revision in telecom tariffs. As a result, we expect the MPC (monetary policy committee of RBI) to remain on hold in its February 2020 policy review," she said.
 India's November inflation has surged to 40-month high mainly due to an increase in food prices, said Rahul Gupta, Head of Research - Currency, Emkay Global Financial Services
 "At this month's policy, RBI refrained from cutting rates due to uptick in CPI despite a slow growth. If inflation continues to rise further then RBI may continue to maintain a pause at the February policy," he said. KPM NKD CS MR
