The Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur is now making its presence felt in the dessert business by giving a healthy twist to our quintessential sweet - laddoos. These organic laddoos are being prepared by 150 farmer families and are now sold in 22 cities - including Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Indore, and others. IIT-K is involved in the quality control, packaging, and distribution of these laddoos. Besides the sweet, the <keyword id="221522" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="premier-institute" source="Orion">premier institute</keyword> also helps the farmer families sell nutritious 'hareera' (a nourishing beverage) in different states under its "<keyword id="238889" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="unnati" source="Orion">Unnati</keyword>" project. <keyword id="525604" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="rita-singh" source="Orion">Rita Singh</keyword>, a convener of this project, said, "The delicacies first became popular among the students in the institute. As the demand grew, we started selling laddoos -- made from alsi (flax seeds), til (white and black sesame seeds), and gond (edible gum) -- in several cities. Now, we are seeking the help of our former students who have settled abroad to expand the business in overseas markets." The Unnati project was launched eight years ago in five villages of Kanpur's Bithoor region to encourage scientific agriculture and impart quality education to village children through smart classes. In the last year, some 150 farmer families from 10 nearby districts have joined the initiative. Scientists of the institute have also been promoting organic farming and creating awareness among the farmers. "Our idea was to teach the farmers about natural farming, small processors, buyers, and technology. Of course, we want to preserve our traditional recipes as well," said Rita. The institute has big plans for the organic produce business to provide the farmers with the maximum possible benefits. IIT-K is also leveraging blockchain technology to help the business flourish. "With the help of blockchain technology, buyers will get to see the field or house where the food product was prepared. We started with selling organic products through WhatsApp but are moving to the next level. The entire process is being streamlined. Our products will be available under the brand name Unnati. This will help the farmers immensely," Rita said. IIT Kanpur helps this organic laddoo business grow with blockchain technology

New Delhi, Jan 28 () Mandatory mid-career training is being proposed for highway engineers for promotion to higher levels, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Tuesday.
The proposal in this regard has been submitted by a committee constituted to identify and recommend methods for transforming Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE) into a world class premier institute having comprehensive expertise on the sector, Gadkari said.
"Mid-career training should be mandatory for promotion of highway engineers to next higher levels," the road transport minister Gadkari said, adding that the recommendations also include exclusive training programme for engineers working with contractors and consultants in the sector.
Outlining the massive growth in highways sector in the country, the minister said that to maintain the massive road network of India in efficient, environment friendly and safe manner at economical costs, there is strong need for enhancement of knowledge, skill and expertise of the engineers.
IAHE proposed "one year foundation training for AEEs of Ministry and Deputy Managers of NHAI simultaneously including 15 days foreign training. Successful completion of foundation training must for continuation in service".
He was addressing media after the report of the committee submitted its recommendations to transform the IAHE into a world class premier institute.
IAHE is the premier institute for pooling of experience and sharing of knowledge on entire range of subjects involving management of highways.
Scope of the academy is being expanded to include three distinct functions - training, applied research and development in the Highways and public transport sector, and road safety and regulation.
It was created by the ministry in the eighties for training of highway engineers from central government, state government, and local Bodies. NAM BAL

This move came after Times Higher Education (THE) rankings and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University rankings. According to the THE rankings, only six Indian institutions were spotted in the top 500 universities, globally. None of the Indian universities — including IITs and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) — made it to the top 100 list. In QS rankings, IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi and IISc-Bangalore were the only three Indian institutes that featured in top 200 universities. Indian government demands an action plan from IITs to improve global rankings

Through the challenge, students were asked to submit project ideas/proposals across four business cases – mobility, self-driven cars, dark kitchens in food business and financial services. The winners of the challenge were Garima Pandey and Dimple Chandra from Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA). They presented a solution for the unique problem of streamlining driver partners and customer transactions at airports across cities. Ola is also an active campus recruiter. This year, the company plans to hire 150 students from premier institutes across India. “Ola strives to create a growth-led, entrepreneurial culture, where employees get to jump in head first and take control of their career paths very early on. They are encouraged to solve the real world business and technology problems across diverse verticals like mobility, financial services, electric mobility, food, skilling amongst others,” said Rohit Munjal, CHRO at Ola.

A year-long-ban imposed on at least 30 startups from taking part in placement process in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has n0t deterred them for scouting top talent from the premier institute. These banned startups are still looking forward to rope in fresh graduates from IITs. 
 Many companies were blacklisted by the All <keyword id="6354859" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT">IIT</keyword> Placement Committee (<keyword id="3378863" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIPC">AIPC</keyword>) and they weren’t allowed to take part in the campus placement process because of delayed joining dates. Some startups had even cancelled offer letters. 
 "It was unfair to ban us without issuing any warning. This ban will not prevent us from taking top talent from the IITs,” <keyword id="1845257" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jasminder-Singh-Gulati">Jasminder Singh Gulati</keyword>, chief executive of <keyword id="1845256" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NowFloats">NowFloats</keyword>, told ET. 
 NewFloats is still planning on <keyword id="6357342" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hiring">hiring</keyword> fresh talent from IITs. 
 
 "Startups like ours need premier engineering talent to thrive in the competition and even the IIT students are looking forward to join startups like ours. Students from the IITs are reaching out to us in any case despite the official ban.” <keyword id="3746380" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="vinay-dalal">Vinay Dalal</keyword>, director of <keyword id="3598980" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mera-Hunar">Mera Hunar</keyword>, told ET. 
 
Dalal also said that famous and big startups were given a chance to explain and smaller ones weren’t. 
 "This year, we are looking at lateral hires as we have a few positions open that need experience too.” <keyword id="3085588" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vir-Kashyap">Vir Kashyap</keyword>, chief operating officer at Babajobs, told ET. 
 
However, AIPC will not revoke the ban most probably. "We are just protecting students' welfare. Companies have no right behaving unprofessionally with students,” a spokesperson for AIPC told ET.

Startups that were banned from placement process are still planning to hire IITians

<ul><li>Three premier Indian institutions raised concerns over lack of government funding. </li><li>Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Mumbai and Delhi campuses and the Indian Institute of Science (<keyword id="41780" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IISC">IISc</keyword>) Bengaluru are amongst those who are unhappy with the IoE plans. </li><li>The Human Resource and Development Ministry (MHRD) recently awarded <keyword id="4396140" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="institute-of-eminence">Institute of Eminence</keyword> (IoE) tag to Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) Deemed to be University, Bhubaneswar.</li></ul>Three premier Indian institutions are unhappy with the slow release of <keyword id="92892" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="government-funds">government funds</keyword>. The issue came to the fore when Human Resource and Development Ministry (MHRD) awarded Institute of Eminence (IoE) tag to <a href="https://www.telegraphindia.com/states/west-bengal/global-goal-on-kiit-radar/cid/1719803">Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT)</a> in Bhubaneswar. But two institutes which were given the same recognition last July --Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Mumbai and Delhi and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru — say that the government has not yet provided enough funds to implement IoE plans. The IoE scheme plans to rope in 10 public and private institutions and enable them with better infrastructure, amenities, and autonomy. As per the scheme, the government was to infuse ₹1,000 crore over five years to public institutions. Private institutions are not eligible for government funding. <keyword id="57604" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iit-delhi">IIT Delhi</keyword> had requested for ₹200 crore but received ₹93 crore, as on September 2019. <keyword id="71852" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Mumbai">IIT Mumbai</keyword> received nearly ₹43 crore. On the other hand, IISc has received ₹78 crore against its demand for ₹167 crore in 2018. “There is a protocol for release of funds. The unused balance with the institute has to be reduced to 20% for further (fund) release,” HRD official <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/education/three-institutes-iit-of-eminence-flag-slow-funding-govt-points-to-unspent-funds-6123451/">told</a> the Indian Express. The institutions have appealed for a regular inflow of funds to execute IoE scheme. “We cannot start a big project or activity if funds are released in piecemeal (manner). It’ll be much easier if funding is linked to an activity and not to fixed conventional heads under which the government usually releases funds,” the official added. IITs, IISc say that patchy funding is delaying ‘Institute of Eminence’ plans

Owing to a tough market scenario in e-commerce coupled with <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/IITs-blacklist-31-companies-from-campus-recruitments-most-of-them-are-startups/articleshow/53868909.cms">last year's bitter experience with IITs and IIMs</a>, fewer startups are visiting the premier IITs during campus placement this year. 
 
Some of the larger recruiters from the previous year from e-commerce like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Flipkart-wont-be-among-the-first-ones-to-hire-at-IITs-may-lose-privilege-after-fallout-with-IIM-A/articleshow/52445158.cms">Flipkart</a>, <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> and Hopscotch did not come for summer placements. They are expected to stay away from the upcoming placements as well. "FMCG and other standard recruiters hired in larger numbers and students got their choice of internships. The trend might continue into the finals,” said Sapna Agarwal, head of career development services at IIM Bangalore. 
 <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword> particularly is likely to stay off campuses and instead focus on absorbing the students it has previously hired, as per company sources. 
 
175 students from IITs have been interning with Flipkart who will be graduating in 2017 and the company claims it is focusing on making them Pre Placement Offers. The remaining 250 odd students from IITs and IIMs whose<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Flipkart-IIM-fallout-IITs-plan-safety-net-for-students-as-startups-go-back-on-their-promised-job-offers/articleshow/52478430.cms"> joining dates were deferred by the e-commerce giant</a> will join the company mid-December. This will make up for Flipkart's campus needs for 2017. 
 At IIT-M, <keyword id="6355629" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Google">Google</keyword> is also unlikely to participate — the search engine giant will be recruiting from select IITs, apart from its internal process. 
 
At such a time, the institutes have been banking on public sector undertakings for jobs. PSUs were in great demand in IITs before a public interest litigation was filed in 2011 against the campus recruitment process. The petition cited that the PSUs recruiting directly from campuses defies the public employment policy and that they cannot disregard job notifications. After a long hiatus from campuses, the PSUs were expected to be back on the premier institutions after the Madras High Court dismissed a plea against direct recruitment in September last year. 
 
This year, IITs reached out to 80-odd PSUs in the country for placements. About five have confirmed their presence in each of these institutes. ISRO, Indian Navy and Coal India are already recruiting from IIT Madras campus. Meanwhile, some of the PSUs registered at IITs have opted for slots in the second phase of recruiting in January.

Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR). </li><li>IITs — where students bagged job offers as high as ₹10 million from Uber — have not been notified of any such decision. </li><li>As many as 3,700 Uber employees lost their jobs in wake of the coronavirus pandemic.</li></ul>The COVID-19 crisis has not just impacted the salaried employees but also the new college graduates who landed job offers — who are now staring at an uncertain future. After Gartner, WorkIndia, ride-hailing platform Uber has revoked job offers extended to the management graduates at premier b-schools like Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), Management Development Institute (MDI) and S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR). This comes on the backdrop of global layoffs across the company offices. As many as 3,700 Uber employees lost their jobs in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. On May 13, the company told its employees that “today will be your last working day with Uber,” over a Zoom call, IANS reported. A placement head at a top B-school told ET Uber had informed the institute that offers were being revoked. “Students across <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/topic/IIM">IIM</a> Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Calcutta, MDI, SPJIMR have been affected,” ET reported citing the placement head from a top b-school. Several companies have rescinded job offers made to the fresh graduates.That leaves students of premier IIMs and other b-schools that secured thousands of offers, in dire straits. It does not help that most of them bagged ‘above-average salary packages’ this placement season. Most of the recruits were top-notch consulting firms, multinational companies, tech majors and more. Lately, the IIMs have been dealing with last minute withdrawals from these high profile recruiters. IIM Bangalore earlier said that it will now reach out to those recruiters who had shown interest in hiring from the top institute earlier but were not a part of the placement drive — to check if they are still willing to hire candidates. At IIM Calcutta, nearly four companies have revoked the job offers and summer internships so far, affecting over 12 students from the current academic year. On the other hand, IITs — where students bagged job offers as high as ₹10 million from Uber — have not been notified of any such decision. The engineering institutions are now considering hosting another placement drive in July-August as the number of offers being taken back have risen. A US-based consultancy firm recently repealed 11 job offers made to students at IIT Delhi, Madras and Kanpur campuses. The situation, the institutes are now figuring out ways to place the students whose offers have been revoked in other companies. They are even reaching out to their alumni network to place students in the less affected sectors. Uber has revoked job offers made to graduates from IIMs, MDI, SPJIMR

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) here is going to set up a <keyword id="6422364" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="space-technology">space technology</keyword> cell in collaboration with the <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (ISRO). The announcement was made on Friday by IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao, a day ahead of the varsity's 50th annual convocation where ISRO Chief K Sivan will be the chief guest. "IIT Delhi is going to set up a space technology centre in collaboration with ISRO to contribute to the space technology research," Rao told reporters. With the move, IIT Delhi will join the league of other premiere institutions like IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee where the Space Technology Cells (STCs) have been set up to play a major role in taking up the space technology research and applications to the newer heights.
