Here's how worried you should be.</a></em></p><p><span>Now, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health is <a href="https://www.mass.gov/files/documents/2019/07/08/spring-hill-advisory-july-2-2019_0.pdf">warning about the presence</a> of another chemical, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), in bottled water sold at Whole Foods and CVS locations in the state. </span></p><p>PFAS became popular in the United States around the 1940s, when manufacturing companies realized the chemicals could resist heat, grease, stains, and water.</p><p>Though many PFAS have been phased out of the manufacturing industry, they still lurk in drinking water and consumer goods such as food packaging, carpets, leather, textiles, and non-stick cookware. In addition to their<span> </span><a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3855507/">ties to cancer</a>, PFAS are associated with liver damage and developmental issues.</p><p>Since PFAS rarely break down in the environment, they can linger in water and air for thousands of years, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-are-pfas-chemicals-2018-8">landing them the nickname</a> "forever chemicals." The products in question contained the word "spring" on the label and included 365 Spring Water (sold at Whole Foods) and Ice Canyon Spring Water (sold at CVS). </span></p><p><span>The department said it issued the warning "out of an abundance of caution," since the levels of PFAS did not exceed the safety threshold set by Massachusetts or the EPA. </span></p><p><span>Spring Hill did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment, but the company has agreed to adopt a new filtration system to remove PFAS by</span><span> July 24. </span></p><p><span>CVS said in a statement that it has</span> halted shipments of Ice Canyon <span>Spring Water </span>and switched to suppliers "who have not identified any PFAS issues." The company said it is committed to ensuring that its products are safe and will offer a full refund to customers. In Horsham and surrounding towns in eastern Pennsylvania, the foams once used routinely in firefighting training at military bases contained PFAS.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>As scientists continue to study the effects of PFAS, researchers have uncovered more evidence that the chemicals are leaching into water supplies across the country.</p><p>In July, the <span>watchdog Environmental Working Group (EWG)</span> <a href="https://www.ewg.org/release/pfas-map-update-new-data-show-712-contamination-sites-49-states">detected PFAS</a> at <span>100 new sites in the US, bringing their estimated total to more than 700 sites across 49 states. Many of these sites included public water systems, military bases, and industrial plants.</span></p><p><span>There are 5,000 varieties of PFAS, but the EPA has only established a health advisory for two types: PFOA and PFOS. </span>These chemicals represent "the most concerning" varieties of PFAS, said David Andrews, a senior scientist at the EWG.</p><p>Though pregnant women and young children are more <a href="https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2016-06/documents/drinkingwaterhealthadvisories_pfoa_pfos_updated_5.31.16.pdf">sensitive to toxic chemicals</a>, the EPA's safety threshold provides "a margin of protection" for these vulnerable populations. </p><p><span>The more PFAS you consume, the more of a danger it could pose to your health.</span></p><p><span>"It took decades of study before we really understood how potent [PFAS] are," Andrews <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/toxic-chemicals-in-food-pfas-found-by-fda-2019-6">told Business Insider</a> in June. "We have to give up the assumption that all of these chemicals are perfectly safe ... 'Forever chemicals' have been found in bottled water brands sold at Whole Foods and CVS, and it's part of a larger contamination problem

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Female_flight_attendants#/media/File:Norwegian_flight_attendant.jpg">Wikimedia Commons</a></span></p><p class="caption"> Flight attendants get pummeled by space radiation while keeping you safe (and serving you food and drinks). </p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Traveling the skies by jet lifts us far from the hustle and bustle of the world below.</p><p>But many flyers don't know that soaring miles above Earth also takes us out of a vital protective cocoon - and a little closer to a place where our cells can be pummeled by radiation from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/neutron-stars-crash-ligo-gravitational-waves-periodic-elements-2017-10">colliding stars</a>, <a href="https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/03/milky-way-s-black-hole-may-be-spewing-out-cosmic-rays" target="_blank" rel="noopener">black holes</a>, and more.</p><p>You can't see these high-energy charged particles, but at any given moment, tens of thousands of them are soaring through space and slamming into Earth's atmosphere from all directions.</p><p>Also called <a href="http://www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/dick/cos_encyc.html">cosmic rays</a> or <a href="http://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genchem/topicreview/bp/ch23/radiation.php">cosmic ionizing radiation</a>, the particles are the cores of atoms, such as iron and nickel, moving at nearly light-speed. They can travel for millions of years through space before randomly hitting Earth.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>NASA</span></p><p class="caption">An illustration of cosmic rays hitting Earth's atmosphere, leading to ionizing radiation.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>These rays don't pose much of a risk to humans on Earth's surface, since the planet's atmosphere and magnetic field shield us from most of the threat.</p><p>"Cosmic rays are not a significant exposure risk on the ground," Eddie Semones, a radiation health officer at NASA, previously told Business Insider. "You actually get more exposure from the Earth's natural radioactive material than from galactic cosmic rays."</p><p>But far above the ground, the particles are more likely to leak through.</p><p>When cosmic rays strike the air, they create showers of ionizing radiation - particles that can knock electrons free of atoms and molecules - that can penetrate deep inside our bodies. This potential damage to tissues and DNA poses <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/aircrew/cosmicionizingradiation.html">risks to our health</a> and has been linked to cancer, reproductive issues, and cognition problems in animals.</p><p>That's why it can be risky to fly for a living. But cosmic rays aren't the only form of radiation that pilots and flight attendants face.</p><h2>Dangers from deep space</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Giant_prominence_on_the_sun_erupted.jpg">Wikimedia Commons</a></span></p><p class="caption">A photo of a solar outburst.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Because those who fly on jet airplanes frequently face higher exposure to cosmic radiation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/aircrew/cosmicionizingradiation.html">classifies</a> airline crew members as radiation workers.</p><p>In fact, the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements reported in 2009 that air crews have, on average, the <a href="http://www.ncrponline.org/PDFs/2012/DAS_DDM2_Athens_4-2012.pdf">highest yearly dose</a> of radiation out of all radiation-exposed workers in the US. This means they receive more radiation exposure than people who work alongside <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/thorium-molten-salt-reactors-sorensen-lftr-2017-2">nuclear reactors</a>.</p><p>"Working at power plants nowadays, it's very, very strict in how they would do a job that'd incur radiation exposure to an individual," Semones said. The use of robots and detailed planning has become routine since the Cold War, so "the industry has evolved," he added.</p><p>Another radiation risk when flying is <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/solar-storm-risk-map-united-states-2016-9">energetic outbursts from the sun,</a> which Earth normally shields people from. This includes gamma rays and X-rays from solar flares, and storms of high-energy protons. When the sun is very active, there can be several solar particle events <a href="http://hesperia.gsfc.nasa.gov/sftheory/questions.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per day</a>.</p><p>The annual exposure for air crews is an estimated 3 millisieverts (mSv) - a <a href="https://www.mun.ca/biology/scarr/Radiation_definitions.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complex measure</a> of the amount of background radiation a person receives in one year in the US. Only astronauts are more exposed: Ten days in space delivers about <a href="http://srag-nt.jsc.nasa.gov/spaceradiation/faq/faq.cfm">4.3 mSv</a> to the skin alone, which is <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/pdf/284275main_Radiation_HS_Mod3.pdf">4.3 years' worth of cosmic radiation</a> on the surface of Earth.</p><p>This is why NASA does not permit astronauts to spend more than a year or so in orbit. The space agency doesn't want their exposure to boost their lifetime risk for cancer more than an additional 3%.</p><h2>No limits for airline crews</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.shutterstock.com/image-photo/solar-eclipse-flying-against-plane-262366559">Shutterstock</a></span></p><p class="caption">An airplane flies in front of the crescent of a solar eclipse.</p></div><p></p></div></div>While NASA is extra-cautious due to the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/martian-radiation-levels-crewed-mission-2017-7">intense exposure</a> astronauts face during short missions, US airline workers don't get the same scrutiny.</p><p>"There are no official dose limits for aircrew in the United States," the US Centers for Disease control writes in its <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/aircrew/cosmicionizingradiation.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">aircrew safety guidelines</a> on cosmic radiation. The reason: "We don't know what levels of cosmic radiation are safe for every person."</p><p>This is because there are very few human studies on the topic. Most have examined nuclear bomb survivors and people undergoing radiation therapy. The animal studies that have been done don't always map well to people.</p><p>There are some worldwide guidelines, however.</p><p>The International Commission on Radiological Protection <a href="http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/aircrew/cosmicionizingradiation.html">recommends</a> crew members not be exposed to more than 20 mSv per year. The ICRP says that the general public, on the other hand, should receive less than 1 mSv per year. </p><p>To minimize their exposure, airline personnel should try to limit working on flights that are very long, at high altitudes, or that fly over the poles, which are all associated with heightened exposures, according to the CDC.</p><p>Pregnant crew members are particularly at risk and should try not to fly during their first trimester. Flying in airplanes exposes people to more radiation than standing next to a nuclear reactor - here's why

And if you believe <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supplements-vitamins-bad-or-good-health-2017-8">some of their claims</a>, supplements can do everything from giving you an energy boost to helping you lose weight. At the very worst, your daily tablet can't do any harm - right?</p><p>Not so fast. A <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supplements-vitamins-bad-or-good-health-2017-8">growing body of research</a> suggests that some supplements can carry real health risks that range from vomiting to negative interactions with existing medications and even <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supplements-vitamins-bad-or-good-health-2017-8">an increased risk of cancer and death</a>.</p><p>St. John's wort, an herbal supplement sold widely in the US and advertised for everything from helping with depression to relieving inflammation, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supplements-vitamins-bad-or-good-health-2017-8">can severely curb the effectiveness of several important pharmaceutical drugs</a> - including antibiotics, birth control, and antiretrovirals for infections like HIV. The herb speeds up their breakdown in the body, potentially rendering the medications useless.</p><h2>'Most people don't consider it a medication'</h2><p>When Pouya Jamshidi, a resident at Weill Cornell Medical College, delivered his first baby, he had to quarantine the child after it was discovered that the mother had been taking St. John's wort and re-contracted a highly contagious infection as a result.</p><p>"The trouble is most people don't consider it a medication because you don't need a prescription for it, and so she didn't tell us," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/supplements-vitamins-bad-or-good-health-2017-8">Jamshidi told Business Insider</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://unsplash.com/search/pills?photo=nss2eRzQwgw">Unsplash/Freestocks.org</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>Although the pregnant woman had been incredibly cooperative with Jamshidi and his team throughout her pregnancy, she didn't realize that the herbal supplement was counteracting the effects of the antibiotics she was taking to prevent the tuberculosis from coming back.</p><p>"It basically over-metabolized the antibiotics so they weren't in her system in the correct dose," Jamshidi said.</p><p>In 2000, the National Institutes of Health published a study showing that St. John's wort could severely curb the effectiveness of several important pharmaceutical drugs by speeding up their breakdown in the body. The findings prompted the US Food and Drug Administration to <a href="https://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/PostmarketDrugSafetyInformationforPatientsandProviders/ucm052238.htm">warn doctors</a> about the herbal remedy, but that did little to stem public sale or consumption of it.</p><p>Over the past two decades, US poison-control centers have gotten about 275,000 reports - roughly <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13181-017-0623-7">one every 24 minutes</a> - of people who reacted badly to supplements; a third of the reports were about herbal remedies like St. John's wort.</p><p>When Jamshidi and his team realized the pregnant woman's tuberculosis had returned, they asked her if she had started any new medications. She said no, but the next day she arrived at the clinic with a small bottle of St. John's wort.</p><p>She said she had been taking the herbal remedy for the feelings of depression she experienced after her last pregnancy. Although some small studies initially suggested St. John's wort could have benefits for people with depressive symptoms, the NIH researchers failed to find enough evidence to support that.</p><p>As a result of her tuberculosis, Jamshidi's patient had to be isolated to ensure the infection didn't spread. She spent the last three months of her pregnancy alone.</p><p>"It was miserable - she was isolated for all that time, and then she couldn't even hold the baby," said Jamshidi.</p><p>He believes one of the reasons <a href="http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsa1504267#t=article">many people end up in emergency rooms</a> after taking supplements is that the quantities of active ingredients in them can vary dramatically. A <a href="http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741-7015/11/222/abstract">2013 study</a> published in the journal BMC Medicine found that doses of ingredients in supplements could even vary from pill to pill - which poses a significant hurdle for doctors trying to treat a negative reaction.</p><p>"There are other medications that can have side effects, but patients come in and tell you the dose, and you can reverse it," Jamshidi said. "But with supplements, you don't know what you're dealing with."</p><p><a href="https://www.crnusa.org/steve-mister-esq">Steve Mister</a>, the president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a Washington, DC-based trade organization representing more than 150 supplement and other companies, disagreed. He told Business Insider that the vast majority of supplements are safe and consumers should feel confident taking them.</p><p>"Supplements are products that are intended to supplement the diet," said Mister. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Nomad</span></p><p class="caption">Rebecca Yazbek is using Slack to help manage Nomad, a  farm-to-table restaurant in Sydney, Australia that she owns.</p></div><p></p></div></div>As Slack and other cloud-based office productivity tools become more commonplace, they're making their way well beyond the land of cubicles and into more hands-on places of business like farms and restaurants. </p><p>Rebecca Yazbek was six months pregnant when she first introduced Slack to her staff at Nomad, the Sydney, Australia-based restaurant she runs with her husband, Al. </p><p>Then, her baby came early, and Yazbek ended up in the hospital with only her cellphone.</p><p>"Slack was the only form of communication," she told Business Insider over the phone from her vacation in Croatia, with her now 1-year-old cooing in the background. </p><p>"That 1-year-old that you heard was forcing me to take time out. I was very hands-on before I had my son, and I was anxious about taking time out of the business and was looking for a solution."</p><p>As director of Nomad, Yazbek is just one of many small business owners finding use for software initially developed with traditional offices in mind. While a lot of what she personally oversees is the business side of the restaurant, Yazbek and her team have found ways to make Slack integrate seamlessly into the day-to-day operations of the locally-sourced eatery. </p><p>Now, Yazbek and her husband are moving to Melbourne, Australia, to launch a second location, and she plans to continue managing the original restaurant via Slack.</p><p>"That will be the main source of communication," Yazbek said. </p><p>Out of 47 employees at the restaurant, 20 are on the business' Slack channel. Most of them are managers and use the platform to communicate across teams - between the kitchen and the front of house, for example - or with people working different shifts. Nobody uses Slack while on the floor of the restaurant because "customers would hate that," Yazbek said.</p><p>In addition to using Slack's chat feature, Nomad uses it to get notifications from other services. For example, Nomad linked its Dropbox account to Slack, so when a prospective employee submits a resume using the online storage service, the Nomad team gets a Slack notification. </p><p>Likewise with Wufoo, which allows users to easily create online forms. Nomad created a customer feedback form in Wufoo and linked it to Slack. Now when a customer sends in feedback, Slack alerts the Nomad team.</p><p>Getting that instant notification of customer feedback is one of the fun parts of the tool, Yazbek said. </p><p>"Someone wants lime instead of lemon or says there is too much salt," she said. "From a team building perspective, people have a chuckle over that."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>FTP Edelman</span></p><p class="caption">Aaron Wickstrom uses Slack to help run his Hilmar, California, dairy farm - and to manage the occasional  manure emergency.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Across the globe in Hilmar, California, Aaron Wickstrom uses Slack to take care of the 2,400 Jersey cows on his family's fourth-generation dairy farm. </p><p>All of Wickstrom's 27 full-time employees have the app installed on their phones. They use it while in the field to handle everything from spontaneous questions to solar-eclipse preparation. </p><p>The area where Slack has had the most impact is in late-night manure emergencies.</p><p>Wickstrom Dairy uses a solids separations system to convert cow waste into fertilizer, and the machinery sometimes gets stuck. When that happens, everyone on the team gets a text alert. </p><p>Before Slack, there was no good way to tell the rest of the team that the malfunction was being dealt with, so multiple people would show up in the middle of the night to address the same issue. Now, whomever is dealing with it just notifies everyone else over Slack.</p><p>"It's become more convenient and we're not disrupting people's sleep schedules," Wickstrom said.</p><p>Slack isn't the only program being used on the farm. Wickstrom said he uses Asana, an online project management service, for scheduling. For documents he and his team use Google's G-Suite of cloud-based productivity software and Evernote. </p><p>"We produce a lot of data points every day. Every time a cow is milked we capture how much milk is produced," Wickstrom said. "People have a view of farming as people leaning on their pitchfork, not having a lot to do.
